00:00Hello everyone, Farmer Ben speaking and welcome to another Facebook and YouTube live from Dalscon
00:05and there is the most intelligent person on the farm, Martin. Do you know what's actually in his
00:13head? What I can imagine is in his head and it's quite apt for this time here. It's just like
00:17a
00:17blizzard. No, it's just like a snowstorm inside his head and that's all it is, just white noise.
00:23Yeah, white noise is exactly what it is. Just pure white noise all the time, nothing else.
00:27No inner monologue, no like, you can't picture anything. You stop being mean to him. Sorry,
00:32can't help it, can't help it. Welcome everyone, I am very excited to be back here in the animal shed.
00:37Hello everyone, here with world famous Farmer Connor. Hello. And we are back to our normal schedule.
00:44Black Friday weekend was absolutely brilliant, we loved it and we've been packing your orders all
00:48day long and you hopefully will be starting to see some tracking coming through. I don't think
00:53we'll be through all of the orders from over the weekend until we hit Friday. Oh, I know,
00:57I know, there's a lot on but we are working through them, don't you worry, you will get
01:01something this week, you will get some sort of notification that has been shipped out this
01:05week. So, we are back in the animal shed and it is a, it's coming to a crucial time of
01:12year
01:12and we've been talking about this for actually the last few months since middle of September
01:17actually, when we started to cedar and we started to sink the sheep and the goats. So it's a lot
01:26of our,
01:26not our pedigree flock but our purebred animals like our Valley Blacknose, our Golden Guernseys,
01:31our Suffolks, our Angora Goats, is that it? Am I missing anyone? I think?
01:39Yeah, I think that's it. Valleys, Goldens, Suffolks, Angoras.
01:45Yeah, that's it, that's them. So, they should be hopefully in Kidd and ready to give birth for February.
01:53Now, February is going to be a hectic month for us, we're very much looking forward to it.
01:58A lot of pressure coming with it, especially with the Golden Guernseys. These guys are very special,
02:03they're a rare breed, they're going critically endangered and potentially at some stage they're
02:08going to go extinct if it keeps going the way it's going. There's less than a thousand breeding
02:11females in the world, so that is pretty critically endangered. Now, we've got pedigree Golden Guernseys
02:17on here and if they have their little kids, they can go to help save the breed. So, scanning time
02:22is
02:22absolutely crucial and that is what time of the year we are at. We are at scanning time.
02:28And I was just speaking to Duncan before we came on live today. Duncan is our scanner along with his
02:32son, David. And hopefully, early next week is our scanning day. Early next week, see. Awesome.
02:41We've been waiting for it, haven't we? Yeah. We've been building up to it. So, that is the kind of
02:46initial roundabout date that I can give you is early next week, hopefully Monday or Tuesday next week.
02:51And I can't tell you how much rides on this. If all the Valley Blacknows come back empty,
02:58it's going to be devastating. How's the nerves? They will be jangling. They will be jangling.
03:03What do you think, Kyle? Nothing. We're all good.
03:08What are you thinking of the Golden Guernseys? They're the big one.
03:14Yeah, I'd just rather not speak about it. No one's going to put a guess out there for them.
03:19I know. You need to put the predictions in. You need the predictions now. I think...
03:22Oh, here he comes. Oh, he's back. There is a prediction. He's back. He's coming right full circle.
03:30Six in kid. Out of? All of them.
03:35Thanks, Kyle. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, eleven, twelve, thirteen.
03:42Oh, I would be disappointed with that. I think out of thirteen, ten in kid.
03:51Oh, what are you doing? What do you think, Steve?
03:56Everyone, get your comments in. Let us know. I'm going to...
03:59Martin, stop being mean. I'm going to go negative.
04:01So when the positive comes, I'll be happier. I think it'll maybe get four.
04:08I know. Kingpin is slightly worried.
04:13And he worries me. I'm ever the optimist, but he does worry me.
04:18Because, of course, we tested him and, yes, he was fertile, but it does worry me.
04:22A lot of guesses coming in. Get the guesses in, please. Get the guesses in.
04:26This is the first scanning day. There will be two. The end of January is the second scanning day.
04:30For the whole flock and whole herd of goats. Steve Merlin's been working. Another nerve-wracking day.
04:37However. There he is, isn't he? I'm getting something to eat. However.
04:42Oh, no. Get out. Get out.
04:45I was waiting with bated breath for that. Sounds like you had no breath.
04:49And I ended up choking because I was that excited about it.
04:52However, on that note, when we're talking about scanning January and the herd in a hole,
04:57what we need to do before that arrives is we need to switch some billies round.
05:01And funnily enough, that's what we're going to be doing today on Live C.
05:03We are for sure going to be doing that. Look, ready. Gloves on.
05:06Gloves on. Fully greened up. Yeah.
05:09Kyle, greened up. Ready to go. No gloves, though.
05:12No gloves.
05:14I brought the box up, don't we?
05:15Oh, why didn't you see it?
05:17I don't know what I've done with it.
05:19I don't know.
05:19Yeah.
05:20You'll need some gloves. Let's get some gloves.
05:22Right, so...
05:22You'll need gloves.
05:24Tell me.
05:25You might need some gloves. The title is Farmer Men versus Merlin.
05:28Oh, is that the title?
05:29Yeah.
05:30I don't think we're moving Merlin at it.
05:31I don't think we needed gloves. I don't need gloves to hold a...
05:33I don't need gloves to hold a bracket for phones, do it?
05:37No?
05:37His hands are too soft these days to work.
05:39They are, little soft, little moisturised hands.
05:44Shut up, C!
05:46Give me a break.
05:47Wow.
05:47That was too much.
05:49That was too much.
05:50That was way too much.
05:51Anyway, so what we're going to be doing is moving and rotating some of the males around.
05:59So, could we not take Jamie with us?
06:02Nah.
06:03All right.
06:03Well, aye.
06:05Well, aye.
06:06You might try and mess the hook up that time.
06:07Nah, I'm not.
06:09Right, we'll bring the captain, or Jamie.
06:12He's going to go down in with the dairy goats and he's going to chase them up.
06:16So, anything that Flick hasn't caught, we're hoping that Jamie is going to follow on and catch.
06:23Now, obviously we've had kids with Jamie last year.
06:27He went in with our boar goats and actually done a great job.
06:31How many?
06:32There wasn't many empty, was there really?
06:33No, there was hardly any empty.
06:34Hardly any empty.
06:35Someone says three to me and I don't know why.
06:38So, yeah, he had a really successful breeding season.
06:41So, we know he's a prolific male and he's proven.
06:44Don't let him out to you.
06:45What do you mean? I thought we were letting him out.
06:47Yeah, but not Kodiak.
06:49I think now you kept him in.
06:51Put Kingpin behind you like.
06:52He wants to come out.
06:53There he is.
06:54That's you, Kyle.
06:58Well, wait, wait, wait.
06:59I know we can't put Kingpin in because we don't know if he works.
07:00I was going to say, why don't we put Kingpin in?
07:01Yes, that's it, that's it, that's it, that's it, that's it, that's it.
07:04Right, Jamie, we're going to see some chicas.
07:08Straight on.
07:09That's it, that's it.
07:11Go on through there, Ben.
07:13Ben.
07:14Shh, shh, shh, shh.
07:15Not a chance.
07:15There's no way he's getting by me.
07:22He's looking well, isn't he, big boy?
07:25He's looking really well.
07:25He's ready to work.
07:27So, his kids are absolutely spectacular.
07:29And when you mix him with a plain female, as in just white or just brown,
07:34you get some amazing markings.
07:35And that's lovely.
07:36That's what we're wanting.
07:37And the same will go for Flick, don't get me wrong.
07:39But if Flick hasn't been more, don't, Jamie, turn left.
07:43You tell him, Ben.
07:44There, he's coming back.
07:45He's coming back.
07:48Silly boy.
07:51Silly, silly boy.
07:54So, yeah, the same will be for Flick.
07:56He will work away just quite nicely and have some beautiful-looking kids as well.
08:01But we need to safeguard ourself and we need to make sure that Flick has been successful.
08:07He has been serving these females.
08:09So, it's good practice to chase him up with Jamie a little bit.
08:13And he'll have a week, 10 days in there and make sure that the job is done and job is
08:19completed.
08:20Oh, look at him.
08:21He knows where he's going.
08:22What a legend.
08:24That makes our life a little bit easier.
08:26Can we get him in this way, yeah?
08:28As Kyle says, we don't want Jamie to mess Flick up because they could end up fighting.
08:34Now, we have gave some of our juniors a chance in here.
08:38These two, Bingo and Bandit they are called.
08:41The two Anglo-Newian males that we have, they're young, very young.
08:46More or less, they were born this year, so they're just kids.
08:50So, we don't actually think they're doing much work, to be perfectly honest with you.
08:54Yeah, it needs a more seasoned professional.
08:56We need someone like, someone like Flick.
08:57Oh, he's doing something, yeah.
08:58Go on, Kyle.
09:00Easy, easy.
09:01We need someone like Flick or we need someone like Jamie in here that's experienced and can
09:05get the job done.
09:06So, those boys are just in here so that they're not outside.
09:09They're very soft Anglo-Newbians and they don't like the rain, they don't like the cold.
09:11They like to be inside in a nice bed of straw.
09:14So, that's why they're in here.
09:16However, we are giving them every chance to kind of figure out what they need to do,
09:21especially for next year because look at the beautiful colours in them.
09:25Aren't they lovely?
09:27And speaking of beautiful colours, here is Flick.
09:30Flick has hopefully done the job.
09:31He has lost a little bit of condition after being in there,
09:33but that is completely understandable.
09:34He's had a lot of females to get around.
09:36Oh, don't show interest now.
09:38Way too late.
09:40He's had a lot of females to get around.
09:42Can we talk about this over here?
09:47No, do you know what?
09:48No, that's fine, that's fine.
09:50Why is there a donkey playing with a pig in there?
09:53That's Saul.
09:54Saul needs to be afraid.
09:58He seems to like him.
09:59Yeah, he does, yeah.
10:00Pigs been in there all day.
10:01I've taken him out three times.
10:10What is actually going on?
10:12What is actually going on?
10:15Imagine if they came best friends to see.
10:17A donkey and a pig.
10:18That's a child's book I've ever heard of.
10:19It is actually.
10:21It's like Timon and Pumbaa, isn't it?
10:24Yeah.
10:24Apart from Timon and a donkey.
10:29Zig and Saul.
10:32And Pumbaa is a pig, not a boar.
10:34He's a wild boar, is he?
10:35Yeah.
10:37Same thing, same family.
10:39I get you.
10:41Yeah, so a weird kind of thing going on over there.
10:43I don't know why the pig doesn't want to actually come out of there.
10:44Can the donkeys get in?
10:46No, the donkeys can't get in.
10:47He lifts the gate up and then sneaks under it on the left side.
11:19Are you joking?
11:20Had Flick got anything left in his crayon?
11:22Probably not.
11:23I don't think so.
11:25Yeah, he's got something.
11:26Why haven't you seen any pink bums there, Flick?
11:28It's because he's not got a lot of weight.
11:30He's got a long game wonder.
11:31Yeah.
11:32I think he needs the weight on there to make the crayon work.
11:36So, Jamie is going to get the job done.
11:39He has his wee tongue sticking out, he's quite happy.
11:43Look at him, patrolling.
11:46Who was sniffing there?
11:49Flick, again.
11:51Again.
11:52You're too late, pal.
11:53My worry is Arabella's not being served.
11:55Yeah, that's my worry also.
11:56Why is Arabella not being served?
11:57And also, is the reason Arabella's not being served,
11:59is that why she was at that sale in the first place?
12:02I think it should take her out into Berlin.
12:04Yeah, I think you're right.
12:06Let's do that.
12:07Oh, well, she'll not get a hiding in there, will she?
12:10She might.
12:11We're better moving her when we're here.
12:13Eh?
12:13We're better moving her when we're here to keep an eye.
12:15Yeah, we'll move her in the morning.
12:17Right, Flick, come on then.
12:18Where you go?
12:18That's a good idea.
12:19Where you go?
12:20Well, Jamie's in there now, so we'll see what they do.
12:23Yes, Arabella?
12:25But there is no keel mark on her.
12:27Aye, but there's a few that's kind of,
12:31I don't know if he just gets the crane too far up their back.
12:35Yeah, I know what you mean.
12:37It's not sitting, because he's quite, he's quite skinny, isn't he?
12:40He's quite skinny and long.
12:41Yeah.
12:42There's no light melon.
12:44Short and fat.
12:45Short and fat.
12:46Yeah.
12:47Look at him wandering around there.
12:49Oh, yeah.
12:51Heckles up.
12:52Look at the hair on his neck.
12:55We tongue out.
12:57I know.
12:59See, can you get a photo?
13:01Get a photo of that.
13:02That is excellent.
13:08He looks completely ridiculous with that tongue out.
13:11There's no need.
13:12Kathleen says, no crayon for Jamie.
13:14No, to be honest, it doesn't really matter now,
13:16because the crayon on Flick hasn't been working.
13:19We know that Jamie is an effective male, so as long as he goes in there,
13:22he should be able to catch anything that Flick hasn't.
13:29They're a bit lean.
13:30A crayon doesn't work great on a goat, does it?
13:32No.
13:33They're not designed for goats.
13:34They're designed for sheep.
13:35It was worth a try to see if we could get them to work,
13:38but even on Merlin, he burns through the crayon so quickly that it almost renders them useless.
13:43And once you've lost, hello, Wonky.
13:46I think it's because it's hair and not wool, isn't it?
13:48It just doesn't really.
13:49It doesn't stick to it as well, yeah.
13:50You can see Hershey's a wee bit more woolly, and you can see it's stuck to her well.
13:53Yeah.
13:55Have you got an itchy chin?
13:56No.
13:56A wee itchy chin here.
13:58Just itch it.
13:59Itch on the camera.
14:00That's it.
14:01Yeah, like Kyle says, it's hair and not wool, so it's not sticking to it.
14:05It doesn't get completely intertwined like it does in a sheep.
14:09And then it's there for, oh, there you go.
14:17Well, that's one done.
14:19I think Flick and me, we caught her anyway.
14:21Aye, it was hard to do.
14:25So yeah, it just doesn't work, and it's not as effective as what the sheep are.
14:28Really, with the sheep, it's absolutely brilliant.
14:33You very rarely get it where it's not showing up.
14:35You'll maybe get a few when the crayon's just starting out, and you'll get it where,
14:40you know, they need to get that kind of...
14:42Oh, no, Kyle.
14:43...that initial first layer off of the crayon before it starts working.
14:46But once it starts working, it's great.
14:49You see every single keel mark on their backside.
14:52And, oh, Kyle with a turn of pace there.
14:54But he's got absolutely nothing on Flick, unfortunately.
14:58Oh, he does.
14:58He's in the back of him.
14:59I think Flick got confused at what an alpaca is.
15:02Well, that's fair.
15:02Nice.
15:03Everyone, I'm still wondering what it is, to be fair.
15:08So yeah, that's the reason that we're not putting any extra crayons on them.
15:12Flicks can remain on there, but you can see how loose it actually is.
15:15It doesn't go up in the left.
15:18I'll go right there.
15:19Don't, don't, don't, don't.
15:20That's it, that's it, that's it.
15:22Good lad, go on.
15:24Get on.
15:24I don't want to touch you.
15:25That's you, that's you.
15:27No, no, no, no.
15:28Do you realise where you're going, sir?
15:30Yeah, he's like in with Merlin.
15:32I don't know, Merlin.
15:33I want absolutely nothing to do with that.
15:35Nothing to do with it.
15:36Amy says, first live I've caught.
15:37Excellent, Amy.
15:38Welcome to the live.
15:39Sharon Mikolov sent 500 stars says,
15:40shopping lives have been great, but happy to see the animals today.
15:42Absolutely.
15:43I'm happy to be back on with the animals, and we're getting back to our regular schedule.
15:47We won't be back in the shopping or in the packing centre until Saturday.
15:53We'll be doing packing live tomorrow.
15:55Just we're watching us pack, no sound or anything on YouTube, so you can tune in there.
15:59But in terms of actually like an actual shopping live, we won't be doing anything until Saturday
16:06at least, until we get caught up.
16:08Sally Palmer, thank you for the 20 stars.
16:10Rhonda says, when are you moving the animals into the polytunnel?
16:12Just waiting for a break in the weather.
16:13Once we get a break in the weather, we are good to go to get them in.
16:19Or Merlin catches it or something.
16:20What date is the, what dates are the tups coming out?
16:25Middle.
16:27Yeah, I was going to say middle of December.
16:29What is next week?
16:31What do we get to next week?
16:34Tenth or eleventh?
16:35That would give them five, six, five weeks.
16:37Any later, you start getting mega late for Lamin and it's, it seems fine on this side of things.
16:43You know, with Kieran and Lamin time, you think, oh, that's completely gross.
16:48Nothing's going to show on that.
16:50What even is that?
16:51I think it's done.
17:02It seems fine on this side of things and every, every farmer will attest to this.
17:07Where in these months, you think, I know we want everything to be in kid.
17:10We want everything to be Lamin.
17:12So just keep them in an extra week and make sure that you've caught anyone that, that hasn't been caught
17:16already until you get to springtime.
17:19And then you've been in the thick of it for five weeks and you're absolutely sick, exhausted.
17:26We say sick, as in sick fed up, exhausted, you've been at it nonstop, births everywhere, trying to get everyone
17:35organized.
17:36You've got things that you're starting to get on with around the farm, outside of Lamin as well that you
17:41just can't get to because obviously it's so hectic.
17:43And you're like, when will this ever end?
17:45So five weeks is plenty of time.
17:48Yeah.
17:49And it keeps everyone fresh and everyone happy.
17:51And to be fair, if he hasn't served them in five weeks, if the Tup or the Billy hasn't served
17:56them in five weeks, the chances of them serving them after that are pretty slim anyway, aren't they?
18:02Yeah, yeah, 100%.
18:04You don't get many that are right at the tail end.
18:07You get some that are hanging on, like maybe one or two that are hanging on.
18:10But then you end up with the same situation where you get, they've hung on that long that you've got
18:16some great big lambs and then some tiny little ones.
18:18And everything comes disjointed and it's hard to match them all up.
18:21And you're trying to get mums out into the field with small lambs and big lambs and they're getting lost
18:26and it all becomes a bit of a mess, for perfectly honest.
18:30So that's why we don't want to do that.
18:32Look at this, it's like Brad Pitt's walked into the, into the goat pen here.
18:37They're absolutely loving the look of Flick.
18:41Look at his lip.
18:43Is there any need for him to be doing that?
18:45Why does he look like he's got no teeth?
18:47I know, doesn't show any teeth, all gum.
18:51Maybe that's the look in the goat world.
18:53Aye.
18:53Maybe teeth are like, why have you got teeth?
18:55Someone's away with his dentures.
18:58We might find a set of dentures on the floor when we're cleaning out the pen.
19:00All right.
19:02So yeah,
19:05that is the reason that we take the males out in pretty, not sharp time, but in an acceptable time.
19:11So they went in on the, was it the 5th they went in?
19:146th.
19:146th they went in.
19:15So if we give them, even if we give them to, what's five weeks from the 6th?
19:20Hold on.
19:20Really you want to give them 34 days, so the 10th is really when they want to come out.
19:26Is it?
19:29All right.
19:31Where'd they go on the 6th?
19:331, 2, 3, 4, 5.
19:37Five weeks is the 11th.
19:38Yeah.
19:39So middle of the next week.
19:41That's frightening, isn't it?
19:42It is frightening.
19:44So 11th of December, that's when the Tups really want to come out.
19:48They've had five weeks exactly.
19:50That'll be 34 days.
19:52That'll be technically two cycles.
19:5335 days, two cycles.
19:55If they've not been in lamb for the first two cycles, they're unlikely to get in lamb after that.
20:01Yeah.
20:01Especially in the second cycle, because remember, if they didn't catch in the first one, 17 days later,
20:07is it 17 to 21?
20:0917 to 21 days.
20:1117 to 21 days, the cycle, how often they come into season, and that's obviously when the males are jumping
20:19in and when they can get pregnant, but if they miss them on the first one, they've obviously got a
20:28lot
20:28going on right at the start, and that's acceptable.
20:30We know that there could be 10 or 12 that are potentially all cycling at the same time.
20:35But after the next 17 to 21 days, the pool of them that are actually in season becomes a lot
20:41less,
20:42and he can more or less focus on the ones who aren't in kid or lamb now, and he should
20:48be able to pay
20:49attention to the ones that have recycled and came back into season again, and therefore should be caught
20:53the second time.
20:54If they haven't been caught the second time and are coming in for a third time, there's something
20:59going wrong.
21:00Yeah, it's either something in the yow that's making her not come into lamb or whatever, for whatever reason.
21:10So yeah, that's where we're thinking.
21:13So five weeks, middle of next week, they'll be coming out, and the job will be done.
21:17And what you'll actually find anyway is that, oh, Merlin is not happy about him being in there.
21:22They'll have to just settle down.
21:23It's actually quite interesting, because down where the 120 are, where the Charlies and the wee Texel
21:29was in, the Suffolk's have taken themselves away, because they obviously think everything's served,
21:34so there's no point in being in here.
21:35Yeah.
21:35So the Suffolk's are standing at the gate waiting to come in.
21:37Yeah, so they know.
21:38Yeah.
21:39So the males themselves know as well, and that's why we've been so intrigued with the likes of Merlin.
21:46And by the way, I'm not trying to over-explain this, I know there's a lot of people who don't
21:50know
21:50the situation or haven't been watching for very long, and why you keep the males in for a certain
21:54amount of time, and why they take them out.
21:55So if you already know this, I'm not trying to over-explain it to you, I'm just very aware
22:00there's a whole range of audience that's watching.
22:03So yeah, the males will know, and that's why we have been very intrigued with Merlin,
22:07how he's been sitting in the middle of the pen, chewing his cud, quite happy, very relaxed.
22:13Whereas remember when he first went in, he went absolutely ballistic, didn't he?
22:17Aye, he did die.
22:18He was going absolutely crazy, yelling, shouting, jumping on anything that was moving basically,
22:24and now, fast forward, he'll be around five weeks, has he?
22:28Yeah, it's five weeks, five weeks tomorrow.
22:31Five weeks tomorrow, now, he's so much more relaxed, he's not jumping on anything,
22:38you'll see Flick as well, he's not jumping on anyone either.
22:42No, he's just having a wee check, mate and do her.
22:44He's just going to go around everyone, have another sweep to see if there's anyone starting
22:47to come into season, or who thinks going to come into season, and then he'll hopefully clear them
22:51up. So it's just an abundance of caution to make sure, but all the signs are pointing to that it's
22:56been a successful breeding season with Merlin, but of course, we're not going to know that until we
22:59get to scanning time. Now, you're also probably wondering why, if you're taking the males out of
23:04the sheep after five weeks, why are you not taking the males out of the goats for five weeks?
23:09Well, that's because it doesn't really matter to us at that stage.
23:13The goats will go a week earlier, we planned that so we can hopefully get a good whack of
23:19the goats out of the way a week earlier. So our lambing season, our kidding season is
23:25going to be about six weeks, our lambing season five weeks. What we don't want is everything going
23:29over the lambing time, if you know what I mean, because the lambing time is going to delay
23:33a week from the goats. So we don't want the goats to...
23:42We don't want everything starting to just overlap. So they can go in six weeks because the lambs
23:50will still be being born after they've been in for six weeks. That's what I'm trying to say. Does that
23:54make sense? Yeah. We're giving these an extra week because we want to get some of these out
23:59the road before the actual main lambing starts. Yeah, because they take so much attention. They
24:03take so much attention and we've got that many this year compared to the... well, we've got a lot more
24:09pygmies, we've got a few more boars and then hopefully all the dairy goats will also be in
24:13Yeah. Kid as well. So it's a lot to get through. And remember, we never had that last year. So
24:19that's what we're thinking. And also we want to give them an extra week because there is so many
24:24in here just for Merlin. Yeah. So he needed that extra time just to get started and make sure that
24:28he could actually get through them all. So that's where we're thinking. And then he actually probably
24:33had double what he should have had, but he's made his way around them. He has. He has made his
24:37way
24:37around them. What an absolute legend. Fair play. Yeah. Doffed the cap to him. Look at Mrs. Ancient.
24:46Is there a new lad in town? I like him. A young buck. Donna says, I love how you explain
24:53everything.
24:53Thanks. Absolutely no problem. I just, yeah, it's sometimes we've got it all in our heads,
24:58all sorted out, but it's trying to actually then get that out to you guys. And what are you doing?
25:08It's an aggressive lip curl she's got on there. Yeah, she just winked at me.
25:11Well, really? All right. Wrong male. Yeah. Get to them. Look at him. He's at it as well.
25:18Yeah, actually trying to voice it and get it out to you guys and explain it correctly.
25:22That's the hard part. He's actually got a bit of hay. Yeah, let's see.
25:26He's got a bit of straw hanging out his mouth. He doesn't need the straw hanging out the mouth.
25:31I'd love to have got a wee story about that, a wee reel about that.
25:36Ben, can we please have twitch back on? I will, yeah, I'll get to it and I'll get to it
25:40soon.
25:40I'll get to it when I go back down. Christophe, if you're watching, can you put it back on please?
25:44Do they get to go outside in good weather?
25:48We would love to. However, the problem that we've got is very wet ground.
25:52Very wet ground for boar goats is bad for their feet.
25:55We have quite wormy ground as well, so they're very susceptible to getting worms.
25:59And they don't like any sort of bad weather. So it's not often we get a right good
26:04run and a right good stretch of good weather. Now, if they're going out, they want to go out
26:09into a different kind of ground than what we've got. They don't want to go out
26:14onto a nice field of grass because they just aren't interested in it. They'd rather go into
26:18a kind of rushy, weedy area where there's lots of weeds, lots of branches, lots of leaves.
26:25That kind of area suits them perfectly and they'll thrive on that.
26:27So if we're putting them out into a really good field, it's just not going to be ideal
26:30or optimum for them at all. And once you lose the condition on a goat, it's really difficult to
26:35get it back. Insanely difficult to get it back. So they stay in most of the year, but they've got
26:40ample space in here. They've got loads of room. And coming in with the polytunnel now and our new
26:46polytunnel complex that we've got down there, that's going to change things too. And that's going to make
26:50sure they've got even more room and they've got even better welfare standards as well.
26:54So if we can get them out onto the grass, we always try to expect. The pygmies go out a
26:59lot
26:59in the summer. They're very hardy and they can handle it. But boar goats, and it needs to be
27:03breed specific, they don't like being out. It's the same with the Valley Blacknose. You know,
27:07you've got these pedigree Valley Blacknose here. They don't like being out in the winter, do they, Kyle?
27:11No, 100%.
27:11They have absolutely no interest in it, they just don't want to do it.
27:14Surprises you from where, concerning where they came from originally.
27:18You'd think they would love being outside. You'd think they'd love being out in the harsh weather,
27:21but they don't. Again, bad for their feet, they cower away, they hate the rain, they hate the cold,
27:26and this is where they want to be. Prime example, look how well they're looking. Obviously,
27:30they've just been sheared. Look how quick their fleece is growing back. A lot of people were worried
27:36about them being quite cold, but it's incredible how quick it comes back, isn't it? And remember,
27:40they only need that first inch, they only need that first inch of wool to keep them nice and
27:45insulated, and that'll almost be back on them now, won't it?
27:47Yeah. Oh, 100%. That's a lot.
27:49They couldn't be happier. It's actually very mild today.
27:52Pete was wondering about in a t-shirt. It was no hassle. I'm in here just in my quarter zip.
27:57Kyle's in
27:58his quarter zip. And it's, yeah, it's incredibly mild. So yeah, that's a wee bit of the reasoning why
28:05we've got some of these inside, why we've got the boar goats inside, especially in the winter. They
28:09would not do in the winter. They would actually, to be honest, being completely frank, if you had
28:14them outside in the winter and you just gave them a shelter out in the field, they'd all die.
28:19Without question, wouldn't it, Kyle? Yeah, definitely. No question at all. So,
28:24lots going on, lots coming up in and around the farm. Very much looking forward to, what day is it
28:29today?
28:30Tuesday. Tuesday. Very much looking forward to scanning time next week. That's going to be
28:36very, very nerve-wracking. I'm going to be sweating bullets for that one, let me tell you.
28:40And yeah, we will keep you updated with when that is coming and what day that will be,
28:46and hopefully live stream it as well. We won't be on tomorrow. We will be for supporters.
28:53PharmaCon will be on at eight o'clock from the small animal shed. If you want to check out our
28:57small
28:57animal shed, monkeys, porcupine, armadillos. Connor does a live there from roughly once a month,
29:03and it is absolutely brilliant. It's fascinating in there. Connor will be on at eight o'clock in the
29:07morning for supporters only. Come and join us in the supporters group. It's a great way to support
29:11the farm. And yeah, you get loads of extra content in there too. There is 150 stupid pink animal mugs
29:18just added on. So I've restocked it. Colin has assured me that they're getting on well,
29:23and they can take another 150. So there's 150 stupid pink animal mugs and coaster sets back on. Go
29:29and check them out on the website. And yeah, we'll catch you on the next one. Thanks so much.
29:35Thanks for tuning in today. Thanks for all your shares, comments, likes. If I didn't read it out,
29:39I apologise. I'll read some comments when I get off here. And we'll catch you on the next one. See
29:42you later, guys.
