00:07All right, so step one is just blow bubbles into the liquid and you want to keep the
00:18rate and the height of the bubbles the same whether you're doing voiceless or voiced contrasts.
00:24Listen once. All right, so I'm not increasing the bubbles when I add the voice. I'm not creating
00:39what I like to call volcanoes. Watch. If you are splashing yourself, you're creating volcanoes
00:50and that is not allowed. No volcanoes. Otherwise, game over. No Broadway for you.
01:03All right, what's the point of that? The point is to show that you can keep the airflow the same
01:09regardless of whether you're voicing or you're not. You're not adding any undue tension just
01:13because you're voicing. Okay? It's actually harder than it looks. So once you master that,
01:23then proceed to step two. Okay, step two. So then you want to create little hills and valleys with
01:30your voice. So you're going to add different pitch ranges, slowly extending your voice up like this.
01:44And once again, just because I'm going to increase the pitch doesn't mean I have to blow more air.
01:49So watch out for volcanoes again. Let me make some volcanoes here.
01:58No, no, no, no, no. Oh, hell no. So you want to keep those bubbles the same rate and the
02:05height
02:06regardless of the pitch. Try this. Nice and easy. So the goal is to be easy on your voice.
02:18After you've mastered that, then you can move on to the next step. So now I want to pull the
02:24straw
02:24slightly above the water. We're not going to do bubbles anymore, but we're going to look for ripples.
02:29So if you take your straw, you'll be able to see a little indentation in the top of the water.
02:42Now you want to make sure that you're not cutting off the airflow as you go to higher pitches.
03:00You should be keeping the ripples and keeping that sense of a kazoo sound in your voice.
03:06Once you've mastered the ripples, then you can proceed to the next step. So now you want to take the
03:11straw completely out of the cup.
03:12And we're going to see if you can still keep the airflow without the visual reference point or the resistance
03:18of the water.
03:19So the way you can ensure that you're still keeping the airflow going is by taking a piece of paper
03:23in front of the straw.
03:30If the paper isn't going anywhere, you're probably cutting off the airflow like this.
03:38What you want to see is this.
03:45If you don't have a piece of paper, you can just use your hand.
03:53You want to feel the airflow on your hand the whole time.
03:55Once you've mastered adding the airflow just on the straw, we're going to slowly fade away the straw in the
04:01next step.
04:02So for this next step, you're going to slowly pull the straw away from your lips and still just use
04:07it as an auditory reference point to see if you're still keeping the airflow going.
04:11So you should still hear the noise blowing through the straw like this.
04:23If you hear this, if you don't hear it in the straw, you're probably cutting off the airflow in your
04:32throat.
04:36You're looking for the sound that's going to make the straw almost like a kazoo.
04:41Once you've mastered that, you can take the straw totally away in the next step.
04:46So in the final step, you want to see if you can emulate that amount of airflow and ease that
04:51you have through all the previous progressions without the straw.
04:54So it'll sound like this.
05:06Again, ensuring that you're keeping the airflow moving with the same amount of ease on high pitches and low pitches,
05:12whether you're loud or you're soft.
05:14Now, if you are sick or swollen or you have some allergies, you might need to live longer at some
05:20of the earlier steps.
05:21But once you get familiar with this exercise, you can jump right to the end where you're just doing this
05:25modified VW sound.
05:33That's where you can start your warm-ups.
05:35You're going to use this as the beginning of your journey into semi-occluded vocal tracks before you get into
05:41lip trills, fricatives, nasals, etc.
05:43So good luck with playing with straws.
05:51Great.
05:51We're going to need to get started to ub pick by straws.
05:53You
