Pope Leo XIV emphasized the seriousness of concerns regarding artificial intelligence (AI) potentially going rogue, stating that they are not “fake news.”

During a press conference, Leo was asked what the United States and China should do to prevent AI from posing catastrophic risks to humanity. The pope said that safety concerns raised by AI experts should be discussed and acted on, having dedicated his first encyclical to AI and protecting humanity from its potential risks.

His remarks come after U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about AI going rogue as a “hoax.”

00:00If someone were to ask me, am I in panic mode?
00:03No, I'm not. I sleep at night.
00:05I do think that the concerns raised by many of the experts, specialists in AI,
00:11should be taken seriously.
00:12I don't think that that is fake news, as some have said,
00:15to try and cause whether financial or some other kind of benefit.
00:22We need to continue to invite political leaders,
00:25the leaders of AI, social organizations, associations,
00:32to come together and look at what is happening already
00:36and what could be down the road.
00:38To simply say, oh, it's not going to happen and close our eyes to it,
00:41I think is probably not the most responsible way to go about that.
