00:00here. It is time for Dion Dawkins on the Western Hotline. Dion, welcome to our show today.
00:08How are you feeling after yesterday's win? Victory Monday, but realistically, you know,
00:15it's a lower, it's just a lower day. You know, it's not like a regular, regular victory Monday.
00:23It's just another Monday for us. Too many, you're referring to like the turnovers?
00:29Yeah, like we are, like we hold ourselves to a high standard, man. And, you know, like
00:36it's a good thing that everybody's feeling like how, and we're feeling because we care. And when
00:42there's a team that feels like how we're feeling, even after a win, it's a good thing. But realistically,
00:49we're not sorry to anybody for winning. Winning is hard to do in this league. So like, I don't want
00:57nobody to get it twisted. We're definitely not sorry. But you know, it's just a personal
01:00thing. Champions. You want to be champions.
01:03Yeah. You know, Joe Brady, after the game last night, during our postgame show, Dion at one
01:09point was talking somewhat like this. And at the end of, you know, pointing out the, you
01:15know, how dangerously close, you know, the mistakes could have cost you guys more than
01:21it did, obviously, because you still won the game is like, you know, pointing out this
01:25mistake, that mistake. But I want to make sure these guys aren't hanging their heads.
01:28Like, you know, we know we, we still, we didn't lose the game. We won the game. How
01:32that's gotta be a really fine line to walk, especially for, I would think maybe a rookie
01:36head coach.
01:40And you said what last a rookie, a rookie head coach. Like he, Joe's a first time head coach
01:45and like, you know, striking the right note with you. Like if maybe you are such a guy
01:50who's been through what you've been through. And if he seems too happy about a sloppy performance,
01:55that might not sit that great with you or vice versa, or vice versa. If he was too mad
01:59about a win, then maybe be like, Oh, you know, what's your problem?
02:02No, that is, that is that like, that is a good, um, yes. Like you are absolutely correct.
02:08Um, I think there is a fine line there, but the good thing is that he is putting his
02:14foot down on certain things. Right. And you know, one, it's hard to win in this league.
02:20And two, realistically, we are not sorry for winning the way that we want, right? Like,
02:28yes. One in every 4,000 football games, like you could lose a turnover margin like that and
02:35still win. Cause I can only imagine that like, there was a certain point where it was like
02:40the percentage of the Buffalo Bills winning is at 0.001% or something because of all of the
02:46turnovers and the fumbles and the mistakes. But as a coach, he understands and he is laying down
02:52his law of look, uh, it's hard to win in this league. We have to stay on our P's and
02:59Q's do what
03:00we do best and, uh, stay ahead, right. Stay ahead of our group and stay ahead of what we have
03:06to do.
03:07And there's no game in this league. That's going to look and feel beautiful. Like if, and now I'm
03:14just speaking for, and myself, right? Like I'm asking y'all to write since we rock out like every
03:20week, right? Like, how would y'all like, like, how would you truly like if every single game that
03:27was played by the Buffalo Bills was perfect? So perfect that there was no penalties. So perfect
03:34that we scored a hundred points every game. Like that's boring. That's, that is absolutely
03:39boring. I agree. That is absolutely boring, right? That is absolutely boring. The world that,
03:45that like that we live in, people enjoy seeing adversity, right? And what we've seen yesterday
03:51was just a little bit of adversity. If you want to come inside Dion, I will tell you, I've said
03:58this
03:58many times and to friends and on the air, this show to do it, I think I find harder when
04:05the bills are
04:06good because how interesting is it to listen to a conversation between people who are like,
04:12Oh, wasn't that awesome? Yeah. I mean, that's just, it doesn't. So there, there, there, I think you
04:17would appreciate, I mean, you've been here 10 years and, you know, you talk to Sal all the time. I
04:21think
04:21you would appreciate this, that it might, it might sound to a lot of players like the media and this
04:27kind of thing is like against you. I'm not saying you're saying that it might, might feel like that
04:32because, you know, we're going to find the little things to criticize or to sort of debate, but I
04:37kind of feel like that's all that there is. That's interesting. I mean, not all, but most of what there
04:42is that's interesting. So it's not, uh, that I'm not speaking for everyone. It's not that we're trying
04:47to get you. It's that, you know, it's not all that interesting to listen to a conversation
04:53about a game that's 100 to nothing, as you put it. Right. Nobody wants to see it. It kind of
05:01gets
05:01boring, right? Like, like not to say this, right? Like the Patriots have won a Superbowl so many times
05:09in a row, right? Like where it seemed like it was like in a row that people, you know, like
05:15not,
05:15like, not that it gets boring seeing, but you know, people kind of turn away from the whole
05:21league. Like nobody's like wants to be that. And for us, like, you know, like we just play a sport
05:27where there's going to be adversity, ups and downs, lows and highs. And the good thing about it is
05:32that's what keeps everything entertaining. Yes. Right. If every, if every award show went perfect
05:37and there was no, no slip ups or somebody tripped up a step and like, there's nothing to talk about.
05:43So I think, you know, I think what you're telling us is that yesterday, the turnovers were on
05:47purpose. I think that's what you're telling us. Exactly. Everything was on purpose. We want
05:53to keep everybody listening and watching, pay attention. We want to keep everybody's popcorn
05:57spilling. Yeah. I like, I like, I like this just, just for a minute more Dion, uh, at least
06:04from my end of it, cause it, I've had, and Mike has as well, many times over conversations
06:12with fans about what kind of game is your favorite kind of game, right? The game, the
06:17Bills won an AFC title game after the 1990 season, 51 to three, and it was to go to their
06:23first Superbowl. And it's an incredible accomplishment. And sale will tell you being in
06:29the stands, it's the most memorable day he had in the old stadium being there because the
06:33second half was a walkover and you knew they were going to the Superbowl. Whereas I would
06:39look at, like I was asked to help rank the most important or incredible games at the
06:45stadium. And I would have rated the wildcard comeback over Houston ahead of 51 to three
06:50because of the drama. And yeah, you know, with the drama, it's not always going to go
06:56your way. So there could be heartbreak, but I will take a chance at heartbreak every time
07:01for the thrill of the nail biter, you know, rather than a game that's just easy. Cause easy
07:07gets pretty boring. Feels like living. Yeah. Now, those are all great. And that's a definitely
07:13also a slippery slope, right? Cause like, if you were to ask me right now, Dion, like what
07:18has been one of your favorite games of all time, right? I will say that it's actually the
07:22Chiefs versus the Bills and AFC championship game. And we actually lost that game, right?
07:27So can you imagine a competitor saying that one of his favorite games was a game that they
07:32actually lost? Right. So that game in a game like that, it just kept the intensity high.
07:38It kept the, the player at his best, right? Like we were all at our best and played the
07:45best. And the game kind of went the way it went over a rule over a coin toss of who
07:51got
07:51the ball first. Right. So yeah, entertainment is entertainment and we are athletes and this
08:00is fun. Living in this world is fun. Playing the way that we play is fun. And I honestly
08:05enjoy the unperfect style games because it keeps the mind spinning. It keeps the blood
08:11boiling and it, you know, and it keeps your intensity high. Like, man, like nobody's watching
08:17no boring movie at, at an AMC theater. Like, Oh yeah, it was great. That guy, he wanted to
08:23win the, the award and he just steamrolled everything through. He never had no hiccups along the
08:29way. You know, that's boring. Yep. We had a call on the post game show yesterday and the
08:35guy called up and he was like, why are you guys so cranky about this game? And, uh, like
08:41we looked at each other, like none of us, neither of us really got it. I don't feel cranky. I
08:45just didn't like the uniforms. That's the only thing I said. Like what the gray? Yeah. Sorry.
08:52Yeah. You didn't like it? No. No. Why? I thought, I thought for the same, you might,
08:59you might think this is ridiculous, but your fiance was at fashion week. So I'll try it
09:02anyway. For the same reason you would never wear that out. Like in public, all gray, you
09:06know, it just sort of, it's not, it's not flattering to your bodies. You know, it's just
09:11not, and you know, I don't, the jerseys to me, the jerseys to me looked like garbage bags
09:17that didn't fit. Like if you, if you went out in the rain and you had like a slate gray
09:21garbage bag that sort of got clingy and I've said enough. So I could, I could agree to disagree
09:26in a lot of ways, but let me ask you this. Okay. What do you, what do you wear on
09:32a, on,
09:33on a regular day basis? And you have an opinion about fashion. Okay. Well, no, I mean, I'm
09:38not, I'm not, I'm not trying to win fashion awards. You know, I'm not, I'm not here, you
09:42know, I should maybe take it more seriously because we're on camera now, but I wear a t-shirt
09:46and shorts almost every day. Nothing, nothing trying to impress. Right. So for, so for all
09:51of our listeners that do like it, I'm going to go against you and I'm going to say, you
09:55stick to your, to your toe out, donk, flip flops and with your, with your shorts and your
10:01button ups. That's fine. That's fair. I'll say in my lane. I did get just, I can chime
10:05in a little. I, I, my friend's text group yesterday, there was a fair bit of, do they seem
10:13like they don't fit right? Like, do they fit the same as the other stuff? Dion? No,
10:18no, it doesn't fit right. But, but, but we all know this, right? Like certain colors,
10:25certain colors bring out different, you know, angles and different, you know, looks, right?
10:32Like for a big guy, like when you're 300 pounds, maybe an all black uniform, you might look a
10:36little slimmer. I know all about this. Yeah. All white, like, like uniform, you might look
10:41just a little bit fluffier, you know? So I guess the gray for your eyes, you know,
10:47it's just not as peeling as the world would want, but all the teams yesterday, by the way,
10:54that went all white lost, including the Chargers 0-7. Really? Yep. Really? White jerseys,
10:59white pants, white socks, 0-7. I don't know. That's, that's a little weird to me. Hey, Dion,
11:05can, can, can I ask a question or two about holding? Yeah, please, please do. So how often
11:13are you baffled by a holding call? Are there, I mean, some of the times you probably like,
11:17yeah, whether it's on you or a teammate. I saw that. Yeah, that's a good call. But I mean,
11:24it's such, it seems like such guesswork out here. I think truly my, my thought on holding calls,
11:31if you're holding somebody where it's like, up obliviously, like you are holding, holding,
11:41holding, right? Then throw it, then throw it, bro. But if you are doing things where
11:48it's a physical game and sometimes like your hand gets caught or you're being physical
11:54and a defensive lineman is flopping and making it look like, and that you're doing like,
12:00there's like, like, it's such a horrible area to call. Like yesterday, like they called me for a
12:06holding call, right? I am so fed up with holding calls that it's ridiculous because I have taught
12:13myself and people have learned an entirely different skill on how to play offensive lineman
12:19with a move that I do, which is that chop down move, right? So the referees don't know whether to
12:26call it or not call it, right? Like they could see a guy fling down fast and their first thought
12:31is,
12:32oh, it's a holding call. But realistically, no, it's just a great technique, right? Like in
12:38correlation to make you guys understand if you're a boxer and let's say Mike Tyson hits you with a
12:45uppercut extremely fast and your head shoots up in the air, right? And it shoots up in the air.
12:52And if every referee in the ring called a head-butting call instead of a fast uppercut,
12:58because Mike Tyson mastered an uppercut, that's the world that we live in. And I'm living in where
13:04I'm just like, I don't really care. Like I'm going to play the physical game that we play. People are
13:09going to do what works. And as a lineman, you know, and other players, like these holding calls and
13:17it's, it sucks. And I hate to be against the refs, but the refs have a tough job too. But
13:24for us as
13:25players, man, like, yeah, it's, it's a, it's a lot and it's, and it's annoying. It is very,
13:31very annoying because they only have two sets of eyes and they throw it on the field. But I just
13:36wish that if they did throw it, that it can be reversed, right? Like I wish that every flag that
13:42was
13:42thrown goes to New York city and they analyze it. And then they give it a thumb up or a
13:47thumb down.
13:48I don't want to just entirely goof around here, but I would tell you that if Mike Tyson hit me
13:52with an uppercut, I would never need to know what the official decided on it. Cause I'd be dead.
13:57So like there's, there's that.
13:58In your case.
13:59I do want, in my case, right. I'm going to trust maybe you could take that punch, Dion, but me,
14:04I'm a wuss and I would fall down and it would be over.
14:07Which, which is the beautiful thing of why we're on the field and you're not.
14:11Right. You know, Dion, I don't know if you know this, by the way, Bulldog is a big guy.
14:16I look, and I know, and I know.
14:19Okay. You did know that. Yeah. We met at that, at the roast. Maybe you remember.
14:22It's a long time ago now though.
14:23You're a little bit, I'm not guessing your weight here. I'm not trying to make it about that,
14:28but you know, you're six, five. Dion is six, five. Yeah. I mean, you're a big guy.
14:31Yeah. I want to hear more about this technique that you're going to, how often do you feel like
14:36you're a holding call on you is something that you you're describing this, this technique that you
14:43use. And do you talk to the officials before the game and let them know like, Hey, I do this
14:49thing
14:49and you're going to think it's holding, but it's not holding. It is ridiculous. Yes. We talked to
14:54them before the game, during the game, during a TV timeout. I'm almost at the point now where I'm
15:00telling the referee when I'm going to, to do it on which play I will look at the referee and
15:06I
15:06will say, all right, ref it's coming now. It's coming now. It's coming now. Right. And they'll
15:12still throw it. And it's just like, bro, you suck at what you do. Period. All right. I've got one
15:20more
15:20on, on holding. So yesterday, maybe this was yours. I'm not sure, but there's a holding flag. And then on
15:27the next play, the bills get another one. So two plays in a row and you're in second and 26.
15:33And I sat there going, there's easily the move on the next play is everybody hold because there's
15:39no way the worst thing. I think the worst thing for officials is not inaccuracy. It's too many
15:45because that's where they get hell from announcers is like, Oh, this game is taking forever.
15:50It's a ref show. Right. So they'd rather be wrong. I think then have be accused of like
15:57too many flags. I'm holding, everybody's holding for my team on second and 26 after two straight.
16:02And what happened on the play was what the chart there was holding. I saw it on the replay. Look,
16:06look the same thing as your penalties, but the chargers got the flag and for, you know,
16:11five yard first down automatic first down. So I don't know. Do you ever think like that? Is that
16:16too far gone? Yeah. I just think, you know, sometimes they make a bad call and they just go
16:29dag, you know, maybe that was a little close, but all right, I'm in charge. You know, I don't,
16:36I don't, I don't, you know, it's just, it's such a great, like, it's such a great area, man. That's
16:42just like, I just wish that they could just rip their flags up, come in the game without flags and
16:47just let us be, be physical and play to the, to the, to the death for real. But becoming sort
16:57of a
16:57strategy with a game and that's, that's corny to me.
17:03That's interesting. I had a many, you're just, you're tripping wires for me all over the place
17:07today, Dion. A conversation with a friend of mine 15 years ago, watching football. And he said,
17:13I think they shouldn't call anything. Let everybody can hold everyone. Offensive linemen can tackle
17:19defensively. You can do anything you want to one another and may the stronger, better man win.
17:24That's it. No rules. You're here for that. Yeah. I think there, there is a line, like,
17:31I don't just want us to jump across the line of scrimmage and bear hug, but there should be like,
17:36yes, still use the technique, still use this, still use that. But when it comes down to it, like,
17:42like we're, we're playing a sport, like realistically, if you try to hold, you'll probably be in a bad
17:48position and the guy is still going to beat you. Cause like on all of our, like holding
17:54calls, it's like, Oh, somebody is beating you. Right. And you're just grabbing them to save them
17:59but yourself. So yeah, I, like, I would think that honestly the rest could only call a certain
18:05amount of calls during a game and let that be it. Cause like, there's so many weird things.
18:11Like, how are you going to call a holding call? And we're driving down to score and the ball is
18:15already gone. And you're throwing a flag from something that happened behind the line of scrimmage.
18:19And the ball is already 25 yards down the field. Like brother, leave us alone, jog, jog down the
18:26field and get the spots. We can play the next play. Like the ball is gone. Like, yeah, somebody might
18:31throw and throw a punch, like, you know, and run off. All right, line up, suck it up and let's
18:36go
18:37back at it. Right. Like, you know, real guy over here. You are a beautiful guy. Deion Dawkins.
18:43Last thing. So New England is next, as I'm sure, you know, and it has not been a good
18:49start for them or their offense or their quarterback in particular so far through three
18:53games. What happened? What happened? What is quarterback? Is he okay? He's not hurt, right?
18:57No, he's not hurt. He might be. Yeah. There's a question about his arm. The coach today or
19:03yesterday after the game got a question because he's thrown some fluttery looking passes already
19:08this year and there was talk at the end of last year playoff time that there was a shoulder
19:13thing there and so that smoke is getting thicker around him. Yeah. Okay. All I was going to
19:21ask, all I was going to sort of put to you is I doubt with the history between the Bills
19:25and Patriots, including last year, of course, that you guys are going to have to, you know,
19:31focus because, you know, this team has meant a lot to the Bills and to you. Yeah, I mean,
19:36I'm going to give you a better way to put it. We have a football game, so we need to
19:40figure out a way to win. And with figuring out a way to win, we also need to figure out
19:44and understand that this is a conference game. And in the conference, we need to win against
19:48all of our opponents in the conference. Not to say that that's the easiest way to get
19:52into the playoffs, but handling your division is one of the easiest ways to get into playoffs
19:56regardless of what else happens during the season. So winning against your immediate
20:00conference is the number one job that we should be doing. No matter what any
20:06other game is, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots, figure out a way to win and you'll have a better chance
20:14at the end of the season. Simple as that. Thank you, Dion. Any questions for us other
20:19than what I'm wearing today? Let me think. Let me think about this, right? I have a lot
20:26of things going on. Yeah, yeah. All right. I have a lot of things going on in life. Fun
20:30things. Production studios, snow, vision films, my water, okay? I have my own water
20:37now, okay? It's called Snow 2O. But when you read it, it says H2O, Snow 2O. Do you guys
20:44want some water? I'll drink some water. Love some water. I'll drink some snow water. Yeah,
20:49I drink water all day. Cool. You know what? I'm going to send some water into my guys,
20:54man. All right. Thanks. So when we're on these calls, we can end them by doing a little
20:59and then a cheers. All right? Love it. Sounds good. Because everybody tells me and everybody
21:04tells everyone else they don't drink enough water. So this is a way around that. This
21:07is a way to fix that. Come on now. Right? You want to lose some weight? Drink some water.
21:12Drink some water. Simple as that. I'm all about it. Thank you, Dion. We'll talk next week.
21:16We'll look forward to that water. Love, fellas. Ciao, ciao. See you. All right. Dion Dawkins,
21:21bringing the noise today. And the water. Right. Brought to you by AAA. Score your exclusive

21:51Every time after a holding penalty. So they don't, you should sort of dare them to call
21:56it back to back. And he's like, I think we should hold on every play period. I think
22:00that should be allowed. That was not the answer I was expecting. It's good. It's not what
22:06I was expecting. Mike Schoep and the Bulldog at 803-0550. This is WGR.
