00:46Under pressure? Well, that enables me to segue very neatly into the fact that today is the 69th birthday of

00:54none other than one of the most influential pop stars of all time.

00:58None other than the wonderful David Bowie, 69 today.

01:02And to coincide with his birthday, he's released yet another album.

01:06His 25th and it's called Black Star.

01:09And of course, he's produced some absolutely classic albums over the years.

01:23Lance, I think there's something about Bowie that tells me he is a terribly intelligent, clever, talented man.

01:33Do you have a favourite David Bowie album or acting role even?

01:37You know what? I think I know his number one fan.

01:39But I don't know much about David Bowie apart from the images of the, you know, good Halloween costumes you

01:44can come up with off the back of him.

01:46But I know there's an amazing writer called Natasha Devon.

01:48And she's such a super fan that she did a kind of pilgrimage to Berlin to a record studio where

01:54he made one of his famous albums.

01:56Oh, I don't mind.

01:56And her boyfriend actually proposed to her when they got there because he knows how much she loves him.

02:01So the boyfriend, or now the fiancé, and David Bowie are her two main loves, I think.

02:10But I just remember him bopping, as it were, with Mick Jagger in Dancing with the Streets all those years

02:19Coming back to us, having been a semi-finalist in 2014, and he impressed us then with his talent for

02:37Jen is from Kent, currently studying a post-grad journalism student course, and was here as a quarter-finalist back

25:489th of 1947 3 45 p.m and a woman called grace murray hopper made a note of the first

25:58bug in her log book and it was a log book it was recording work done on the harvard mark

26:05is one of the very first electromechanical computers the first one had been used towards the end of

26:12world war ii had done great work they were absolutely huge these machines eight foot tall

26:17that's 2.4 meters and they were run by these 50 foot shafts behind them these generators so

26:26really huge huge cumbersome machines apparently a moth had become stuck in the relays between

26:33the machine and so this moth was duly taped into the log book and murray hopper said the first actual

26:40case of a bug being found and so many people will say this was where the word computer bug comes

26:47from

26:48but in fact it's quite clear if you read her note that she was referring to something that had already

26:52been in existence and that it was almost a joking reference this is the real bug and in fact if

26:59you

27:00go back much earlier to 1889 you'll find that other computer pioneers have been talking about bugs and

27:07the first example in the oxford english dictionary is from the pall mall gazette of the 11th of march

27:131889 and it's all about thomas edison yes mr edison i was informed he'd been up the two previous nights

27:19discovering a bug in his phonograph an expression for solving a difficulty and implying that some

27:25imaginary insect has secreted itself inside and is causing all the trouble so the first idea of a bug

27:33not a real one in this case uh was going all the way back as they say to 1889 and
