00:00One thing had me concerned today, believe it or not, was the weather.
00:06Because the weather was Seattle-like.
00:09It was like being in Seattle.
00:11And I thought, oh no, we don't want to give them a home feel advantage throughout the weather,
00:18but it didn't turn out to be that.
00:21But it did remind me a lot of Seattle.
00:24But it shows you how the burgundy and gold, the pride that you fans went through,
00:31fought through it, you didn't use it as an excuse.
00:34You used it as a stepladder to climb up and help this team tap that tail end.
00:41And that's a good thing.
00:43Sammy, you've been patient.
00:44As all of you have been lined up outside in the rain, what's on your mind?
00:49What's up, Doc?
00:50Long-time listener, first-time caller.
00:53All good.
00:54I just want to say, the defense today, they bent, but they didn't break.
00:59One thing to point out, Durante Jones, our defensive coordinator,
01:03his team led the league in turnovers last year.
01:06So, even though we let up a lot of points, yes, we had a lot of, we had three takeaways,
01:12and we had the stop on fourth and goal.
01:15And I think a lot of that has to do with the defensive coordinator,
01:18and I think Sonny Stiles is the real deal.
01:20I think Sonny Stiles is the real deal.
01:22He had the pass breakup.
01:23He had the forced fumble.
01:25He had the pick.
01:26Sonny was a great draft pick.
01:27Our best draft pick since Jaden.
01:29Maybe one of our best of the decade.
01:31I am pumped about Jaden.
01:33And then, finally, I just want to say, this fan base needed it.
01:36I heard commentators say, you know, it's getting late early.
01:41I heard someone say that.
01:42People were already ready to, like, turn it in for the season.
01:44We needed this win, and we got it.
01:46We got it, Doc.
01:47I'm pumped.
01:49Well, good.
01:50Appreciate that.
01:51And when you're at the seventh pick in the draft, no one should be shocked that you're a playmaker.
01:58And he'll earn it, and he'll continue to earn it, and people will come at him in all kind of
02:03ways.
02:04He's a football player.
02:05No question about it.
02:06But let's let him grow, like all of them.
02:10We're not in a rush.
02:12We're in September.
02:14What we had to prove is that we could win together.
02:18We knew they could play together.
02:19They can pick up a check on payday together.
02:22But could you win?
02:24The object of this is to win games.
02:28And we've proven that.
02:30We proved it.
02:31Yeah, this group can outscore the opponent.
02:34We understand what that means.
02:37Can we play better?
02:39H, yes.
02:41Can we play smarter?
02:44H, yes.
02:46Will we?
02:48That will be left to be determined.
02:51Mitchell, you're next on the Burgundy and Gold Post Game Show.
02:56Doc, how you doing?
02:58Thanks for taking my call.
02:59Hope everything is well.
03:00Mitchell, I'm good, man.
03:02I'm good.
03:03Life is good.
03:05We won the turnovers battle.
03:07Sam, he could be, he could throw the yards, but he could also throw the ball all over.
03:12Little chaos at times.
03:13But they did win the Super Bowl.
03:15And Rashad White, he's not a scat back.
03:18He's a big fella.
03:19Big bruiser.
03:20I wish, I don't know, he's not getting enough carries.
03:22I'm surprised he's not really picking up where he left off with Tampa.
03:26And you know I'm a USC guy, Doc.
03:29We were off the brand.
03:29But that game last night, that hit and the celebration afterwards, it's one of the worst things I've seen in
03:35football.
03:35What do you think?
03:36And thanks for taking my call.
03:38Appreciate that.
03:39Yeah.
03:39Oregon, they won a game.
03:41Look, when the quarterback slides late, if those of you that missed it, the Oregon Ducks and the Southern California
03:46Trojans, and you got hit, concussed, the ambulance, it's an ugly thing.
03:54You can't promote it.
03:57You got to play to protect.
03:58We don't want anybody injured in it.
04:00I thought it was called properly.
04:03And the better team won the game.
04:06And Brioni, the key is that when you, this notion about backup quarterbacks, if you're a backup quarterback and you've
04:14never played, we should come up with another name for that.
04:19But a backup quarterback that has started in the league or has played, in this case, in Nebraska for seems
04:34like 20 years, that to me ain't new.
04:36That's a veteran, and that's what we have.
04:39Mariota is a veteran.
04:41You follow me on that, Wes?
04:45Of course.
04:46I think we're on the same page.
04:47The thing about it, he was, last year in college was 2015, it's 2026.
04:54He's been around a long time, and he has been in this type of game more than once.
05:01So if you want a game manager in a game that is going to end in two points, this is
05:06the guy that you want to want.
05:07And it's crazy that he's a backup, and he just beat the defending champions.
05:13Well, his career has taken him through ins and outs.
05:17He's a champion.
05:18He's a champion.
05:19I mean, he understands it.
05:21And again, I'm so proud of him.
05:24I'm happy for him.
05:25I mean, hell, he got his job.
05:26He earned his check.
05:27But I'm happy for him because of those that I heard that doubted him.
05:32And I'm going, what he had to prove was that he could be the starter and survive it and get
05:38a victory.
05:40Jayden gives everybody a sense of security because he's one of the most unique athletes on the planet.
05:51But when you don't have him, you can't keep saying that when he gets back, you can't run a program
05:57that way.
05:58You got to be able to win with him and without him.
06:02Otherwise, you're not even worth having him because you can't be tied into any one person as if they're your
06:09life and death.
06:10That's just bad.
06:11It's bad management.
06:14We got to find a way to sustain playing and to run a program.
06:18You know, I got the answer to it, right?
06:20You know what the answer is?
06:22You need a bell, Kyle.
06:23You got to be able to run that ball, man.
06:25You got to be able to run that ball.
06:27Run that damn ball.
06:29And you ain't got to worry about your quarterbacks being decapitated every week.
06:33They can sustain a lifestyle.
06:36You say we got James?
06:39James, Jane, pardon me.
06:41Welcome.
06:42Yes, yes.
06:43It's okay.
06:43Thanks, Doc.
06:45I had a couple comments.
06:47I wanted to ask about Darnold and the Seahawks.
06:50And I think I was listening this week where you all were – somebody said, I can't remember who, said,
06:56you know,
06:56if you have a quarterback who wins two games for you, you stick with them.
07:01You keep sticking with them.
07:02So luck did that for them.
07:04But then I was wondering if because Darnold was maybe questionable and maybe they thought that the commander's defense was
07:14weak,
07:14they thought, okay, well, this will be sort of a warm-up week, an easy game for Darnold to get
07:20in there.
07:20I think that's it.
07:21I think what you just said is what I said.
07:25I go, if I'm going to bring Sam back, I'm bringing him back against the commanders so we can have
07:30a soft landing.
07:33Right.
07:33I agree with you.
07:34Yeah, and it got him by surprise.
07:36Yeah, exactly.
07:37Can I have a couple more?
07:39A couple more.
07:39I think Diggs is fantastic.
07:41He always goes for the extra yardage.
07:43And I'm so happy for Marcus because I think people didn't see him as a starter, and today they see
07:50him as a starter.
07:51That's all.
07:52He earned it.
07:53I appreciate the phone call.
07:55Marcus, to me, and I've said it over and over, and I'll repeat it one more time for those of
08:00you in a time capsule.
08:03I wouldn't take anybody over him in game.
08:05If five is starting, because he can come in and sudden decision of a game and pick up and roll.
08:16Where I had been disappointed is when he was the designated starter.
08:20I want the same guy that comes in in an emergency to be the starter.
08:25We saw more of that today.
08:27And he did it with two of his number one top linemen out.
08:31And you're playing Seattle.
08:34I can't emphasize their defensive front alone.
08:40Nobody's better at it.
08:42And not only did we survive, we thrived and won a game.
08:48Hey, man, I give Bill a lot of credit.
08:50Bill running tough.
08:52Did you see the ball on the ground, Hokie?
08:56Did I see the ball hit the ground?
08:58Is that what you're saying?
08:59Yeah, with Bill.
09:00No.
09:01No.
09:01No, not at all.
09:03Bill, a fumble would have been, oh, like kryptonite.
09:08Bill balled out.
09:10Take a quick break.
09:11You agree?
09:13301-230-0980.
09:15You disagree?
09:16301-230-0980.
09:18Back in a moment.
09:19No.
09:19No.
