00:02:25Do you enjoy coming back here?
00:02:26Because there's always that sort of tension in the air, but a jeopardy.
00:02:30I do, because of that.
00:02:31Because the racing is always very exciting.
00:02:33It feels like there's always something that happens.
00:02:35Last year's qualifying was kind of the highlight.
00:02:37And it just feels like you never know what's going to happen.
00:02:39It's a street track.
00:02:40It rewards some people.
00:02:41Other people, you know, fall to victim of it.
00:02:44And I think that's what people love about street tracks.
00:02:46And then you throw in a long straight like we have here, and it just promotes great racing.
00:02:49Well, one of the early victims of qualifying yesterday was, of course, Kimi Antonelli.
00:02:53Were you surprised by the accident, particularly at Turn 1?
00:02:57I was surprised because it was in Q1 when he wasn't even really pushing that hard.
00:03:02So it wasn't a mistake of you're on the edge a little bit too much and you get caught out.
00:03:06It was just a silly mistake.
00:03:08But if you look at the whole season, he's made a lot of tiny mistakes, like in a race,
00:03:12but he never had to pay a price for it.
00:03:14So that's why we're all in charge.
00:03:15Oh, how horrible.
00:03:17But he's in a car that allows him to get back through the field.
00:03:20Okay.
00:03:20Talking of which, we saw an incredible recovery drive from him in Monza.
00:03:24Can we expect him to emulate those heroics again here?
00:03:28Certainly there are opportunities to overtake.
00:03:30He will hope so.
00:03:30So I think his teammate's definitely going to be harder to beat here than Monza.
00:03:34Monza is an easier track to overtake historically here.
00:03:37I think there's going to be a lot of chaos to kind of get through.
00:03:40And he's not going to want to have a similar situation to, say, Oscar last year
00:03:43in an attempt to do that by yourself out of the race.
00:03:45So I think he's going to have to be smart with how he moves through the field.
00:03:48He doesn't need to win today.
00:03:50He just needs to score good points.
00:03:51And so the last thing he needs to do is make a big mistake trying.
00:03:54It's much more, I mean, if you have a mistake here, you pay a much bigger price than you
00:04:00would at somewhere like Monza.
00:04:01So Monza, I think he could drive a bit freer.
00:04:03Here, I think he needs to just manage expectations a bit, get some good points and take what he
00:04:07can.
00:04:08Yeah, you're spot on because we see these mistakes costing a huge amount here.
00:04:11And it's a reminder that actually no one is immune to it, not even the championship
00:04:16leader.
00:04:16As you will remember here last year, Oscar Piastri was leading the championship by 31
00:04:21points and had two crashes, one in quali and in the race.
00:04:26I mean, I guess everybody needs to know you have to treat this place with respect.
00:04:32You have to treat this place with respect, definitely.
00:04:35But for Antonelli, he has such a cushion that he's not under pressure at all.
00:04:40He just wants to win every race.
00:04:42That's the pressure he puts himself into and has nothing to do with the championship.
00:04:45Castery last year, Small Gap and all the other teams were actually fighting them for the
00:04:48championship.
00:04:49Okay, in your DNA though, as a racer, you want to get out there and win.
00:04:53You're not thinking about the championship, you're thinking about the here and now, aren't
00:04:55you?
00:04:56You do.
00:04:57But once you get in that position, you think championship because that's what you work
00:05:01for all your life.
00:05:02So wins are great, they're fantastic.
00:05:04When you get a glimpse of championship, you do have to change your approach a bit because
00:05:08the championship has much more value than any race win.
00:05:11Okay, well, now is a good time then to remind you of the standings.
00:05:15Back-to-back wins in Monza and Madrid.
00:05:18I've seen Kimi Antonelli extend his lead to 81 points over his teammate George Russell and
00:05:22101 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
00:05:26Charles Leclerc is 24 points behind his teammate in fifth.
00:05:30Liam Lawson's run in the Red Bull comes to an end here with Hadjot returning from his wrist
00:05:35injury.
00:05:35The New Zealander, though, did bag some useful points.
00:05:38He's now on 59 in ninth with Pierre Gasly rounding out the top ten.
00:05:44Arvid Lindblad has finished in the points eight times in the last nine races, which means he's
00:05:49up to 31 in 11th.
00:05:50It was a woeful weekend for home heroes last time out in Spain.
00:05:54Sainz stays then on six points in 16th and Alonso on three points down in 17th.
00:06:02And in the constructors, Mercedes are still controlling things up at the front.
00:06:07145 points is their lead over Ferrari.
00:06:09McLaren are a further 52 back in third, with Red Bull on 230 in fourth.
00:06:15Just nine points separate Racing Bulls and Alpine.

00:06:29George, that's a fantastic lap, the final part of Q3.
00:06:33You found nine tenths between Q2 and Q3.
00:06:35I mean, most people are three or four.
00:06:37Were you surprised with that lap?
00:06:39I definitely was very surprised with the lap, but I knew I had the pace.
00:06:43And I was kind of building up throughout the whole session.
00:06:45I didn't want to really push the boundaries in Q1 or Q2, and I wanted to leave it to the
00:06:50last lap.
00:06:50It looked really tricky in terms of having to build up the front tyre temperatures, everyone doing multiple laps.
00:06:56Talk me through it at first of all, turn one.
00:06:58Yeah, I think I was quite nice to the wall here, pretty close, and also on the exit here was
00:07:02quite close.
00:07:04So it felt pretty hooked up there, and it's always challenging in that corner.
00:07:08And talk to me about turn two, because one thing I've noticed is you sort of almost aim for the
00:07:13wall.
00:07:14This one, you know, it's incredibly close.
00:07:17Just for people to look at it there, I'm just going to pause it.
00:07:20But the judgment is incredible.
00:07:22Yeah, well, it was actually come from Lando.
00:07:24He asked to change the color of that wall from yesterday, because yesterday it was black, and you couldn't see
00:07:28it as well.
00:07:29And they changed it to yellow at turn two and turn three, and that helped you a pace a bit
00:07:33closer.
00:07:33Now, the other thing I've noticed, George, is we've got lots of 90-degree corners here,
00:07:36and you're sort of like leaning your head to the outside, almost trying to look for what's coming around.
00:07:42I've never noticed that, so, yeah, don't know what that's about.
00:07:46It is, but it's dusty as well on the edge of the track, isn't it?
00:07:49Talk to me about turn four, because the wind was behind you into this one.
00:07:53Yeah, I mean, it was just being very gusty all day, so just even now, we've just got this big
00:07:56gust,
00:07:57and it totally transforms the balance, and I went in a little bit hot into turn five.
00:08:03I had a bit of oversteer, but you've got to release the brake at this point over that crest so
00:08:07you don't lock up.
00:08:08Oh, yeah, you can see there, the slide.
00:08:10It didn't cost me anything, and this section I felt really, really strong,
00:08:14and especially this turn seven here, braking deep, releasing the brake,
00:08:19and just letting the car roll on this new tarmac, because there's more grip here than there is...
00:08:24That's right. You pointed the apex.
00:08:26Every time I click this, it always surprises me,
00:08:28but so there's more grip at the beginning of the corner than there is at the end of the corner,
00:08:32so...
00:08:32Yeah, because we saw in free practice, you sort of went down there as a child.
00:08:36Clearly, that inconsistent grip is not easy for you guys.
00:08:39No, it's not, because you've got more grip here, so you feel like you can keep braking late,
00:08:43but you've just got to have that confidence to send it.
00:08:45Now, into turn eight, this has been Crawford's favourite corner for two reasons.
00:08:49A, his favourite kebab shop of the season is about there.
00:08:52Right, yeah, yeah, okay.
00:08:53And B, he has loved watching you go through there.
00:08:56The commitment. Talk us through it, because it's narrow, it's tricky.
00:09:00I mean, it's pretty... Can you, like, just, yeah, go slow, because I'm just curious.
00:09:03You've got to be so close to the wall on the right, entering the corner.
00:09:06Yeah.
00:09:07I mean, just this commitment to throw it in and be close to that apex on the left.
00:09:12I mean, and here, there's momentarily, you try and get the wheel straight there,
00:09:17and then into the next one.
00:09:18And it's so tricky, I guess, to bring the car over to the left.
00:09:21It is, because you've got this crest as well, and you've got to get in nice and early there,
00:09:24but that wall is jagged, so you don't want to be too close,
00:09:27because you can easily nibble at the front right.
00:09:30And now talk to me, because you guys have used slightly different deployment.
00:09:33Yes.
00:09:33It seems like you've used less at the start of the lap, but you're winning back here.
00:09:37Yeah.
00:09:37And that's clearly a strategy that's pre-planned and worked for you?
00:09:41Yeah, it's been working well, and I mean, it all comes out pretty similar,
00:09:46but it's been working well, and into this last corner, it's been very tricky with the wind.
00:09:50You've seen loads of drivers running wide, and I just...
00:09:53It's behind you, I guess, the wind.
00:09:54It's right behind you there, and so if you get this gust,
00:09:56you just sort of understeer, oversteer wide.
00:09:58It all sort of goes on, but it was great,
00:10:01and I've been touching that inside kerb to try and help the understeer,
00:10:05but as soon as I got to this point now, I knew it was a good lap,
00:10:08and then on the radio, I was like, come on, come on, you're just like, you're waiting,
00:10:12and I could feel the slipstream from Hajar in front as well.
00:10:16He's about four seconds ahead.
00:10:17Yeah.
00:10:17So it was just like dragging me a bit long.
00:10:19You can hear the engine notice slightly higher than it was the lap before,
00:10:22and yeah, cross the line, and there you go.
00:10:25I mean, this feels like a weekend where, from the first lap of free practice,
00:10:28you've been in a good rhythm, and I was saying,
00:10:30street circuits are about rhythm and confidence, isn't it?
00:10:33So going into the race tomorrow, feeling good?
00:10:35Feeling good, feeling good, but of course, got some fast drivers around,
00:10:38and you know, got Kimi, he started lower down the order in some races early this year,
00:10:42and it's finished right on the top steps, so yeah, I won't be taking anything for granted.

00:11:09Of course, the race is up in a couple of hours,
00:11:12and full focus to try and convert it to a win.
00:11:15What do you think your chances are converting that into that win today?
00:11:18No, I'm feeling confident.
00:11:19I think we've got a great pace beneath us.
00:11:21I think the race start's going to be key.
00:11:23I'm sure Charles is going to be pretty motivated to overtake at the beginning,
00:11:27but I'm confident if I can get into the lead,
00:11:29I can try and pull that gap and control the race.

00:11:34I know it was a tough day, and you were tough on yourself,
00:11:36but today's a new opportunity, isn't it, to try and claw something back?
00:11:39Yeah, of course.
00:11:40You know, yesterday was a mistake on my side,
00:11:44but obviously we move on and learn from it,
00:11:46and today's a big opportunity, of course.
00:11:48The car is very quick, so hopefully, you know, we can gain a lot of places.
00:11:55Jack, how hard or otherwise is it to just move on?
00:11:58Get a good night's sleep?
00:11:59Are you able to after a crash like that,
00:12:01or does it play over and over in your mind?
00:12:03It depends why you've crashed.
00:12:04If you've analysed it, understood it,
00:12:07then there's no reason to repeat it.
00:12:09If it caught you by surprise and you still don't understand it,
00:12:12then you're a little bit on the edge,
00:12:13and that's when it becomes an issue,
00:12:15but I'm sure he knows why he hit the wall there.
00:12:18Well, George, conversely, looks really like he's found his rhythm here.
00:12:22How important is that at a circuit like this?
00:12:25Hugely important.
00:12:25I mean, it's a confident circuit,
00:12:27and I think clearly he seems to be super confident from FP1 onwards.
00:12:31I think that's also, on Kimi's side,
00:12:33maybe what he probably has a bigger concern about
00:12:35is the fact that I know he missed a lot of running in FP1 and FP2,
00:12:38but the fact that he hasn't been able to match his teammate,
00:12:41whereas all year, generally speaking, if he's behind George,
00:12:44it's only by half a tenth or so.
00:12:45It's never been a big gap.
00:12:47But for George, I think it's the right timing.
00:12:49It's now that the pressure's off a little bit,
00:12:51the points gap is big,
00:12:52and he just needs to hammer it home
00:12:54and try and score as many points as he can.
00:12:55Is that the key for him, that the pressure is off?
00:12:57He can just go out there, relax and drive,
00:12:59and then hope that maybe he can think about the championship again,
00:13:02should he win today?
00:13:03If that's what unlocks the performance that's been lacking,
00:13:07then for sure.
00:13:07But I think after the summer break,
00:13:08his performances have been much stronger,
00:13:11but it's putting everything together
00:13:12to kind of obviously beat Kimi,
00:13:14but ultimately, when Kimi has bad days like he did yesterday,
00:13:17make the most of them.
00:13:18And I think the way we've seen George of recent,
00:13:20like I say, it's very close for Kimi,
00:13:22whereas this is now a big, big margin.
00:13:24And if he can carry that
00:13:25and that confidence into the rest of the season,
00:13:27then I'm not saying the championship might be,
00:13:29the championship fight might be on.
00:13:30It's still a lot of points,
00:13:31but there's more to play for.

00:14:05which will be much quicker on a one-lapper,
00:14:07and then you pay the price in the race.
00:14:08Okay, well, his teammate, Lewis Hamilton,
00:14:10felt slightly aggrieved because he starts P6 today,
00:14:14and that's because he felt in no man's land
00:14:16because he didn't benefit from the tow.
00:14:19Explain to anyone who's just joining us this weekend
00:14:21how significant a tow is here in Baku.
00:14:24It's hugely significant.
00:14:26You can see the length of this straight.
00:14:28If you're sat behind a car,
00:14:29you don't have to kind of poke the hole in the wind
00:14:32for everyone else,
00:14:33then you massively benefit,
00:14:34and especially with this year's regulations,
00:14:36with the deployment,
00:14:37you're so much more efficient down that straight.
00:14:38So naturally in a race team,
00:14:40when you've got two cars,
00:14:41one needs to be in front of the other,
00:14:43otherwise one's benefiting from the other one
00:14:45more often than not.
00:14:46The way it is is Charles is benefiting from Lewis this weekend,
00:14:49and I think he made the most of that,
00:14:51ended up P2 for Lewis.
00:14:52He wasn't able to find anyone to be behind.
00:14:55So when you're a team like Ferrari
00:14:57that weren't going to fight for outright pole
00:14:59without something like that,
00:15:00I can see the frustration,
00:15:01but it's so hard to plan to get a tow
00:15:04and plan these things.
00:15:05That's sometimes how it goes.
00:15:06Do Ferrari have to rely on the chaos
00:15:09that normally ensues here
00:15:10for them to get a win or a podium?
00:15:12Because, I mean,
00:15:13Lewis yesterday was saying
00:15:14how Mercedes is just in the league of their own.
00:15:16No, the podium is in anyone's hands right now.
00:15:20They can all fight for it.
00:15:21Beating the Mercedes, I don't see how,
00:15:23because they have such an advantage
00:15:25when they deploy their energy in the straight line
00:15:28that there's no way they can be overtaken.
00:15:30That's the issue.
00:15:31And also, because of their pace difference,
00:15:33they can actually slow down a bit
00:15:35in all the twisty bits to regen energy,
00:15:38and then they just deploy it in the straight.
00:15:39So they are impossible
00:15:41to then just overtake on the normal fight.

00:21:33Well, this weekend hasn't quite gone as smoothly as that hole.
00:21:37Particularly the practice sessions.
00:21:38It always felt like McLaren were on the back foot.
00:21:41Why was that, do you think?
00:21:43The track evolves a lot here.
00:21:45And if you get a little bit wrong and all the twisty bits,
00:21:48then you don't have the straight light spins like the Mercedes has.
00:21:51Then the lap time just disappears.
00:21:53It's a long lap as well.
00:21:54So a second and a half here would be a second and another track and so on.
00:21:57So it looks bigger here than it actually is.
00:22:00But by the time Saturday morning came, they were super competitive.
00:22:04Then Norris complained at the start of qualifying that something was wrong with his car.
00:22:09And his engineer told him, okay, not over the radio.
00:22:11We'll talk when we're on Fox.
00:22:13So something was changed and obviously it took speed away.
00:22:17Who knows what it was?
00:22:18And yet, at the beginning of Q3, they both topped the timesheets.
00:22:23Only for Paul Lando to then have that lock-up into turn three.
00:22:26So what was your reason for that?
00:22:28I mean, the lock-up.
00:22:30So they went very aggressive on strategy in Q3.
00:22:32You heard Lando on the radio talk about out, push, in.
00:22:36So what we saw yesterday that was quite unique in qualifying was the tyres were just getting better and better.
00:22:41So a lot of the teams were just staying out for one run on one set of tyres.
00:22:45And so most of the teams were doing that.
00:22:47They came in, went for the second set, and that only gave him one lap effectively to do the lap,
00:22:51which he made the mistake on.
00:22:53But they've had quite a lot of teething issues.
00:22:54They brought a lot of upgrades, a lot of new parts to the car this weekend.
00:22:58And on both sides of the garage, they spent a lot of time in the garage, in practice especially.
00:23:02So, yeah, a lot of little teething issues.
00:23:04We heard them say we speak off the intercoms, there's some stuff they don't want us to know about clearly.
00:23:09But, yeah, hopefully they can have a better race today.
00:23:11And Oscar up in P3, I think, is a solid result for them.
00:23:14Yeah, it really is, isn't it?
00:23:15It reminds us that actually updates don't necessarily mean progress.
00:23:19But if it doesn't quite work as you expect...
00:23:21Updates mean good numbers.
00:23:23That doesn't mean the drivers can drive them.
00:23:25And that's happened throughout the history of racing.
00:23:27Bids get brought to the track, and the driver cannot actually use it to its maximum, and ends up going
00:23:32slower.
00:23:32Now, the numbers, it might give more downforce, but it's not usable.
00:23:36And a good designer, a good engineer will understand that and go back to the drawing board,
00:23:41trying to understand why is that driver incapable of actually getting a benefit from those numbers.
00:23:46What's the reasoning?
00:23:46But, you know, driving and setting a car up is all art.
00:23:50Absolutely.

00:25:25What are you up to?
00:25:28Natalie, good morning.
00:25:29Yes, I'm 2,500 miles away from Baku,
00:25:33and it is becoming a hive of activity just behind me in Mission Control.
00:25:36Well, Mark Temple is the Technical Director of Performances alongside me.
00:25:40Just give us a sense, Mark, of what is happening
00:25:43and what will be happening in the next few hours in that room.
00:25:45So, at the moment, the team are getting ready for the comms check,
00:25:48which is where we check that we can communicate properly with the track,
00:25:52the engineers at the track.
00:25:53And you can see we've got a group of various different people.
00:25:55So we've got strategists here who will be monitoring our car
00:25:58and what competitors are doing.
00:25:59We've also got people who are monitoring the chassis
00:26:02and the performance of our car, so suspension, tyres, control systems like gearbox,
00:26:06those kind of things, and also just monitoring our own software,
00:26:10because we rely a lot on these software tools,
00:26:12so we need to make sure they're working and responsive.
00:26:14How much influence do you feel you can have over a race
00:26:17and the team's performance from here in Woking?
00:26:20I'm sure it's a massive influence because we have a lot more people
00:26:23that we can use here, so they're monitoring a lot more
00:26:26and they're feeding information back to the people at the track
00:26:28so they can make better informed decisions and actions,
00:26:31particularly when things happen unexpectedly,
00:26:34then that's where those extra eyes and ears make a big difference.
00:26:38And also, a keen eye kept on the other teams
00:26:41and what information you can take on how the other drivers are operating
00:26:45and what they're doing.
00:26:46Yeah, absolutely.
00:26:47So, obviously, if the weather is very changeable,
00:26:49then information about rain is really crucial,
00:26:51but also tracks where we see that tyre degradation is high,
00:26:55then understanding what other drivers are saying about their tyres
00:26:58can help us understand what might happen later for ourselves.
00:27:02Give any sense as well of how you or how the team decides
00:27:07which information that you can gather here that you pass on to Baku
00:27:10gets to Lando and Oscar on a race day?
00:27:13So, it works a little bit like a spider's web.
00:27:16So, everyone back here has all these intercom channels.
00:27:18They can talk to each other
00:27:19and then they can also talk to the people at the track
00:27:21and there's a kind of a filter.
00:27:22So, there's a lot more discussion from the groups here
00:27:25and then key information will be fed by key people to the track,
00:27:29to the race engineers,
00:27:30and the race engineers will obviously decide
00:27:31whether to pass that on to the driver.
00:27:33How has this part of the team developed over the years, would you say?
00:27:39Certainly, I mean, when I started, there wasn't anything like this
00:27:42and it's become more and more sophisticated
00:27:44as racing has become more and more sophisticated.
00:27:46There's more and more data, more and more channels,
00:27:49more video feeds, all of those things.
00:27:51So, it's been a big exponential increase, I would say.
00:27:55Just a word finally on today then
00:27:56and how competitive you feel you can be?
00:27:58I mean, I think it'll be very interesting to see.
00:28:00Obviously, Mercedes were very strong in qualifying yesterday
00:28:03but I think we were pleased that we got both of our cars into the top five.
00:28:06So, certainly, we'll be racing with Ferrari and Red Bull.
00:28:09I think we'll see what happens relative to Mercedes.
00:28:11Maybe it was just qualifying pace.
00:28:13Maybe they'll also have race pace too.

00:50:45Up to quality, he was a little bit behind.
00:50:47And then in quality, he lit it on.
00:50:50And it worked really well.
00:50:51And Max had issues.
00:50:52He complained that his car was bottoming too much.
00:50:54He couldn't brake.
00:50:55That probably was taking speed away down the straight as well.
00:50:57And he just wasn't getting the lap time.
00:51:00And at the same time, Hadjar did an incredible job.
00:51:03So when you put the two on the balance, the result is good.
00:51:06It's interesting for Max, isn't it?
00:51:08Because he ultimately qualified eighth.
00:51:10He was looking on it throughout the weekend before.
00:51:12I know he was complaining about problems with his car.
00:51:14But ultimately, the yellow flags that came out for Lander's lock-up at turn three
00:51:19really stopped Max in his tracks.
00:51:23It's very detrimental for him.
00:51:26And also, we've noticed, if a car took a tow, it could be four tenths of a second,
00:51:31half a second.
00:51:32And that puts you second instead of eighth, just because of that toe in the straight line.
00:51:37So we'll never know.
