00:00 This baby elephant put its trunk on the ground as soon as it first discovered it.
00:04 Then, out of curiosity, it stepped on it with its own foot. The little calf clearly
00:09 didn't seem to know what to make of this strange thing attached to its face, so it
00:13 pulled the trunk in front of its eyes and examined it carefully. And this is
00:17 actually part of a baby elephant's learning process. A newborn elephant's
00:21 trunk is incredibly useful, but learning how to control it takes time. It's made
00:25 of thousands of muscles giving it the strength and flexibility to grab, smell,
00:29 and even communicate. But having all those abilities doesn't mean a newborn
00:33 automatically knows how to use them. Even drinking takes practice. Instead of
00:37 immediately mastering the technique adults use, young elephants may sometimes drink
00:42 directly with their mouths while they're still learning what their trunk can do.
00:45 And they have plenty of other things to figure out, too. Baby elephants spend a
00:49 lot of time playing and interacting with other members of the herd. These
00:53 experiences help them develop the coordination they'll eventually need as
00:56 adults.
