00:06There's a theory in physics called the Novikov Self-Consistency Principle.

00:10Basically, it says that if you traveled into the past, the universe wouldn't allow you to create a paradox.

00:17Imagine going back to stop your parents from meeting.

00:19You miss the train. You get the date wrong.

00:22They meet somewhere else by accident.

00:24Or it gets even stranger.

00:25Your attempt to keep them apart becomes the reason they meet in the first place.

00:30According to Novikov, you could visit the past.

00:33You could participate in it.

00:35You just couldn't change it.

00:37Because whatever you did there was already part of history.

00:40Novikov developed this idea while studying Einstein's theory of general relativity.

00:46And Einstein's equations actually allow for structures called closed timeline curves.

00:51Loops in space-time where the future bends back and reconnects with the past.

00:56The mathematics is real.

00:58The geometry is allowed.

01:00Technically, the universe permits it.

01:02But this is where Novikov's principle gets really strange.

01:06You wouldn't have a one-in-a-billion chance of creating a paradox.

01:10The probability would be absolute zero.

01:13So imagine traveling back to 1920 to prevent a famous fire.

01:17You find the building.

01:18You warn everyone.

01:19You rush inside to help.

01:21And in the chaos, you bump into someone carrying an oil lamp.

01:24The lamp shatters.

01:26And the flame spreads.

01:27You didn't prevent a fire.

01:29You caused it.

01:30There was never another version of history.

01:32It was always you.

01:34That's the mindfuck.

01:35Inside a loop like that, what would free will even mean?

01:38You could affect the past because your actions happened there.

01:41But you couldn't change it because those actions were already part of it.

01:45You thought you were going back to rewrite history.

01:48But you were actually going back to complete it.

01:50You were never going to change the past.

01:53The past was waiting for you.
