00:01I want to acknowledge the fact that the police family is hurting today with the passing the
00:07death of a young officer named Mia Lay, which is terrible news for police officers across
00:14our state.
00:15It's a reminder that this is a difficult and dangerous job.
00:18It often involves putting young people in harm's way to protect us, to keep us safe.
00:24And police officers don't know what they're going to face every morning when their shift
00:27begins.
00:28And that was another terrible example of that was today's event where a young officer
00:35who graduated not long ago, in fact, graduated school not long ago, started her shift not
00:41knowing that she wasn't going to return to her family.
00:44I am devastated for her mother and father, I'm devastated for her partner, I'm devastated
00:49for the policing community in New South Wales that will be hurting.
00:52And I want to say on behalf of everybody in New South Wales, we are thinking of Mia's family
01:00family today.
01:01They would be absolutely heartbroken at the death of their daughter.
01:05But I hope they can get some small semblance of relief from the fact that she was a serving
01:13New South Wales police officer of distinction.
01:16She was respected by her colleagues.
01:18She'll be missed by many.
01:19And she was doing her duty for our state.
01:21We are eternally grateful for the young men and women who go through the Goulburn Academy,
01:27come out the other end, and are deployed across New South Wales.
01:30We then put them in difficult and dangerous situations.
01:34And as the Premier of New South Wales, I'd do anything I could to reduce that danger,
01:38to reduce the kind of risks that they have to take.
01:43But the truth of the matter is we can't get it down to zero.
01:45It's too difficult.
01:46And as a result, we have to rely on brave young men and women who are prepared to do
01:51this difficult job to keep us safe.
01:53Mia was one of those brave young women who sign up to the New South Wales police to do this
02:00difficult job, and I'm devastated today as are millions of people in New South Wales.
