00:00Now it's a sit down with Orville Peck.
00:02Hi, Orville.
00:04Congratulations on your new album, Mule.
00:06People are calling it your best one yet.
00:09Do you read the reviews or are you like,
00:11it's out, my work is done?
00:13I mean, I go through periods.
00:14Like I, you know, I'm like a Capricorn.
00:19So I'm obsessed with like self-punishment
00:21and always like, you know, I have to really stop myself
00:25from like reading comments, all those kinds of things.
00:27I wouldn't, I can't pretend that I'm above that.
00:29This album means so much to me
00:32and so much to the people in my life
00:34that lived through this time with me
00:36where I was, you know, in my addiction.
00:38And so at this point, especially with this album
00:41in my career, I'm honestly just happy with how it is.
00:44And that's the most important thing to me.
00:46Public scrutiny has kind of become part
00:48of an artist's journey now, for better or worse.
00:51Orville, what's your relationship with social media?
00:53Are you taking it or leaving it?
00:56I think that we have garnered some beautiful things from it.
01:00I think we've, I think there's beautiful connections
01:02to be made.
01:03I think, you know, a lot of things, but like,
01:04I really do kind of yearn for the days
01:07of when I would just like skateboard out of my house
01:10when I was like 13 and, you know, I had nothing on me,
01:13but like a CD player and I would just go visit my friends.
01:16I mean, it was just a healthier time mentally.
01:18I think I really try to stay in check about social media.
01:21I don't spend very much time on it anymore.
01:23You know, I, of course I have to use it for work,
01:25but for the most part, I do, I do think people need
01:29to be like touching grass a lot more.
01:32The Malcolm Moore controversy just went down
01:34and politics aside, it's been inspiring
01:37to see artists back each other.
01:39Part of making art is taking a stand.
01:41What does Orville Peck take a stand on?
01:44You know, personally, I stand with the Palestinian people.
01:46I've been in support of that for many, many years.
01:49And I am really proud that people are taking a stand.
01:53And I think, you know, the most revealing thing is
01:55how much of our lives and our narratives
01:59are being dictated by billionaires
02:02who control what people have to say
02:05and what people are watching, what people are doing.
02:08And I think that that's like, you know,
02:10the beauty of that coming to light more in these moments,
02:13like they're scandalized and sure, whatever.
02:15But I think the real thing is, is like,
02:16the reality is none of us are free
02:18until all of us are free.
02:20There's so much control that happens,
02:23especially with art.
02:24And I am glad that people are taking a stand.
02:27We saw you on Playgirl, sir,
02:29leaving very little to the imagination.
02:32Some people would consider stripping down like that
02:34to be the ultimate vulnerability.
02:35But with the mask on,
02:37you're still holding your private self close.
02:39How do you decide what feels safe
02:41to share with the world?
02:42There's a epidemic of oversharing in our culture now
02:46and everyone knowing and seeing everything.
02:48And like, obviously, that's why more than ever,
02:50I actually love my mask because I just I love
02:53when it frustrates people.
02:54I will not allow you to have full access
02:56to everything about me.
02:57Even if you find a picture,
02:58even if you whatever you think,
03:00that boundary needs to exist more.
03:02And like, I can see it really frustrating people
03:04sometimes in comments and stuff.
03:06And I'm like, it's good.
03:08You need to learn.
03:08You cannot have everything you want,
03:10all the information you want from everybody.
03:12It's not the way it works, you know?
03:14And so I love it.
03:16Finally, tell everyone why they should listen to Mule,
03:19which is out now.
03:20I think if people take anything from this album,
03:22look, they're my stories.
03:23They're very personal.
03:24I think I think people will relate to a lot on this album,
03:28even if they don't are struggling with addiction
03:30or things like that.
03:31I hope it just inspires people to check in on their friends.
03:34We just have to take care of one another, you know?
