22:3616. It was the European Grand Prix 10 years ago. It's round 15 this season and the first of a
22:43triple
22:43header, a triple header that mathematically could decide the destiny of the Formula One
22:47Drivers World Championship this season. 51 laps to come in Saturday's race. 3.7 miles circuit is the
22:54fourth longest on the calendar. The overtake detection is out of the left-hander at turn 16
22:59and at the start of the 1.4 mile long main straight. Here are the tyres for this weekend, softest
23:06in the
23:06Pirelli range. C5 for qualifying, C4 the medium and C3 the hard tyre. And ahead of us, 60 minutes of
23:14practice then on the shores of the Caspian Sea around this 20 corner circuit. 12 to the left
23:19and 8 to the right. It's great to be back in Baku on what is a very, very warm day
23:25today. Track
23:26temperature already 50 degrees. Air temperature hovering around 28 degrees. And as you can see
23:31from the Caspian Sea, it's quite a still day. The wind has dropped. The humidity is rising. And
23:37Karun Chandnok and I have gone for the shorts option today, which is the right strategy to go for. Karun,
23:42hello. Hello. Yeah, absolutely. 74% humidity out there. This is definitely a day to be in shorts.
23:48But when we just look at the windcroft, that is so unusual here, isn't it? It is. Baku has a
23:53reputation
23:54of being one of the windiest cities on the planet. And it's going to catch a few people out because
24:03this is not going to stay. The wind is going to pick up as the weekend unfolds. And it plays
24:08havoc
24:08here. We saw it in qualifying last year. Record six red flags, which was a Formula One record.
24:13Yeah. How are you after your one hour and 58 minutes of qualifying here last year?
24:18Yeah, it was 25 minutes longer than the Grand Prix, which was very confusing. But yeah,
24:25and so much of that came from the wind. It was just really making it tricky for the drivers.
24:30And that's not something they're going to have to deal with today. But the 50 degree flag temps,
24:34that's punchy. I was sat on my sofa and I was fully with you and Harry and Phil,
24:40because that's what they were doing, filling time, Jamie Chadwick. We're not going to be filling
24:43time today. There's a lot to get through in this session for McLaren with their big upgrade and
24:48for Williams. Big upgrades. I think, yeah, as we've spoken about, unusual track temperatures,
24:55unusual circumstances at this circuit. But also the cars this year, I think, are going to make
24:59this circuit a proper handful. It's going to be a lot of deployment, a surge of power for a lot
25:05of
25:05these drivers. It's a lot of these 90 degree corners on power. Obviously, you're close up against
25:09wheels anyway. And as we know, it's never easy to drive any car around this circuit, let alone
25:15this generation of Formula One cars. Lots and lots of 90 degree corners. Therefore,
25:21the power, the torque that comes out of those corners, as you're hinting, is way more excessive
25:26than we had last year. So delicate, delicate racing boots are needed for this one. Otherwise,
25:32you're going to be wheel spinning and destroying those rear tires. Yeah, but what we also have
25:36around this track is it's an energy poor track. Yeah. And there's a, but it's much more complex
25:43than places like Monza. So certainly in the middle part of the lap, they're going to have
25:49very little electrical deployment because you want to come out of turn 16, you know, the bottom
25:55corner of the straight, the big long star finish straight with a, with the battery at a hundred
26:00percent. And therefore, what's going to be strange for the drivers when they come out
26:04of the corners, sometimes when they get on the power, they will have a thousand horsepower
26:08because there'll be full deployment like out of turn 16. But when they come out of other
26:14corners, turns 12, 15, for example, they'll have about half as much power. And so, but your foot
26:23still moves the same amount. It's just the response of the car from what you're doing with
26:28your right foot. It's going to be completely different. So that's something that the drivers
26:32are going to have to get used to and just practice in practice so they don't get caught
26:37out in qualifying. And also watch those closing speeds for those that are preparing a lap and
26:42those that are on a lap, especially in qualifying, because, you know, unlike last year, where you
26:46want to get a good blast out of turn 16 and accelerate down the main straight. Now you want
26:50to leave that acceleration for as late as possible to keep your battery at a hundred percent.
26:54We'll carry on talking about this in a couple of moments. But as you can see, the lights
26:58is green at the end of the pit lane, pit lane, and Ted Kravitz is surrounded by vehicles.
27:04And very, very dusty. It is down here too, David. Yes. Hello from the pit lane. And if
27:10they call Baku the city of wind, we could do with a bit of wind actually to disperse some
27:14of the just the natural dust and muck that's on these, these streets obviously used. Yeah.
27:20As Lando Norris passes me and this trail plume of dust follows him down the pit lane. I'll
27:25leave you to see how dusty it is on the track itself. But welcome to Thursday practice. Bit
27:30of a random one. Haven't had a Thursday practice for a while since Monaco went to the usual three
27:36day weekend. But it's a case of, won't somebody get the hat trick, Crofty? Looking for a hat trick.
27:43You know in football where you score a couple of goals and you want to go home with the match
27:47ball, don't you? Yes. If you get your hat trick, your three goals. Or in cricket,
27:51if you manage to skittle out a couple of batsmen and then you're going for your hat trick. Well,
27:57Lando Norris was looking for a hat trick after wins in Budapest and Zandvoort. Didn't get it
28:04in Monza. And now Kimi Antonelli after wins in Monza and Madrid is looking for a hat trick. They've
28:10both had two in a row out of the last four races. And they're both looking to convert the hat
28:16trick.
28:16That will probably mean, Crofty, that it might not happen.
28:19That crazy pulling on the brakes. Like crazy. Copy that.
28:24Nearly shunted in the wall. Yeah, while you were talking hat tricks, Ted,
28:28Isaac Hadjar was having a right old time of it trying to slow the car down.
28:33Yeah, I mean, it looked like he was just having stabs at the brakes and he wasn't comfortable. He's
28:36moving the steering wheel around. That could just be an offset in brake temperature from left to right.
28:41I hope it's that because that's an easier fix with blanking and things rather than
28:45anything mechanical. But equally, he's not been in the car for a while. So, of course,
28:49it looks like there is an issue or something there. But any time you spend away from a Formula One
28:53car,
28:54you're going to get back into it. And that first lap is going to still feel a little bit peculiar.
28:58Said the last few weeks have been a bit boring, to be honest. You should have been watching our coverage.
29:01We've had a lot of fun. Yeah. There's a big difference, isn't there, between being
29:08a race driver and even just hanging around as he was a reserve driver, but not being one of them.
29:15I look at Yuki Tsunoda and there's little things, Crofty, that come. It really drives home the point.
29:21So, for example, we all flew into Baku. We landed at the airport and when we come down the stairs
29:28of
29:28the aircraft, there's a car waiting to pick up the 22 drivers and whisk them off.
29:35The vibration on these brakes is unbelievable. Twice as bad as anything I've ever had.
29:43It's clear in data, Oscar. Struggles for Oscar too.
29:47Yeah. But I'll say, you come down the stairs and the 22 drivers have a special car,
29:52the two principals of a car and they whisk them straight to the terminal and away they go.
29:56And all of a sudden for Yuki Tsunoda, he's gone from being one of those people who got into the
30:02little limousine and whisked him away to standing on the bus with the rest of us and having to go
30:06to
30:06the terminal and queue behind us at immigration. It's a fall for grace.
30:11And it really, it drives the point home so quickly of just the difference between, you know,
30:17let alone the bit obviously about driving the car. But there's all little things that go around it as
30:22well. It's James Valves I felt sorry for. He was William's team principal. He was on our plane.
30:27He didn't get the car. He didn't get the sign. He had to make it to the terminal before anyone
30:32had a
30:33sign with his name on it, you know. Someone lost the memo there. Kimi Antonelli was on our plane coming
30:39over here. He was actually sat right at the front but was one of the last people off because he
30:44couldn't
30:44actually get his suitcase put together and get the handle put on because he'd been so busy being a
30:49bit pesky and taking photos of people that were sleeping. Yeah. What do you mean put the handle on?
30:53Well, because his handle wasn't on the actual case and he had to put the handle back on it again.
30:57And he was, he was all of a palaver. Like a child, he basically had like his toy box that
31:03he was carrying
31:03on the plane with his toys and kept wheeling out. But what? Had his PlayStation in it. Yeah, but nothing
31:08amused him
31:09more than taking pictures of Ted and David sleeping all the way through their flight.
31:14Um, he, I think he very much enjoyed that. Yeah. You were asleep. You would have seen him doing it.
31:17Well, no, I didn't. And then he told me that, uh, he asked me had I had a good sleep.
31:21I'm like,
31:21yes, why? Yeah, well, I took some photos and he laughed and giggled and walked off.
31:26And, uh, then he sent me, uh, the photo. Um, and that's why he was giggling. It wasn't the most
31:31flattering pose that Ted Kravitz and I have ever, uh, have ever been caught in. Then I got a message
31:36from George
31:36Russell yesterday saying, yeah, I saw you and Ted sleeping on the plane. Nice photo.
31:41So he's been showing it around. He's in for a custard pie, that lad. It's coming his way.
31:46He's a prankster, isn't he? He certainly is. I would love to know. It's interesting. Oscar's
31:49actually stayed out even with that weird feeling on the brakes, but. So it could be a getting it
31:53up to temperature thing. Perhaps, um, or we might just have to get through this run and then they
31:58can change it or look into it. I'm not too sure. But, uh, yeah, I love the Kimmy we have
32:02of now.
32:02Um, I'd love to see how long he stays like this, uh, this version of himself. I hope for,
32:07for as long as his career goes on forever. But, uh, yeah, I'm sure at some point formula
32:11one is going to change him and he'll be not necessarily on your flights to get to the races.
32:17And, uh, yeah, he deserves that as well. I'm sure. Yeah. But I think it's, it's so much
32:22is about the people around him who keep him grounded, isn't it? You know, it's, you know,
32:26his family have played a big role in making him who he is today. And even though he is on
32:31course
32:32to become world champion. That's a great pulling to the right.
32:37You drive the street. Copy it up. Okay. It's becoming a bit of a trend this one now, isn't it?
32:42Yeah. But three different teams. So it's two different teams. Three.
32:46Wasn't Oscar. Oh yeah. Hadjar. Hadjar. Hadjar and Max. Hadjar is Max's teammate this week.
32:50Yeah, yeah. Catch up. We're both slow on that one.
32:53That is unusual though, because that's something that's normally fairly standard in setup of
33:00they'll probably have an even split from left to right, maybe slightly different depending on
33:04the track. But, uh, yeah, it could be something on the circuit in terms of
33:08the way that the track is. Obviously it's a street track. It changes a little bit every year,
33:13but it sounds like it's very specific to the brakes for those guys.
33:16Uh, Ted was talking about hat tricks for this weekend and, uh, could Kimi Antonelli, uh,
33:21post a hat trick after his wins in, uh, in Monza and in Madrid. He has got the hat trick
33:27already this season, of course, China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco. He won five in a row,
33:32uh, there. Lando Norris never had a hat trick of Grand Prix wins in his career so far,
33:38uh, which surprised me when I wrote that down for the, uh, the Madrid race, but, uh, he'll have to
33:44start all over again. He does come into this race with a 100% point scoring record.
33:49And, well, it's a race that he, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton kind of need to get a big points
33:55advantage over Kimi Antonelli if this title race is going to carry on.
33:59Definitely. I mean, it's, uh, ever growing that points deficit, but, uh, it'd be interesting.
34:04I think, I mean, Lando alluded to it earlier in his conversations in the press conference and
34:09what have you, or in the pen where he said that it's so far away for them that I don't
34:14think
34:15they're really even thinking about the championship. If Lando can get race wins at the end of this
34:18year, obviously he deserved to win in Madrid, but, uh, yeah, if he can just get race wins,
34:22that's a great season for them. George, I think, although it's a big deficit, can still be hungry
34:28for it. I think anything can happen. It's a long way to go, but I think he can still be
34:32hungry for it.
34:33I think he's the only one that can think about the championship. For the others,
34:36it's a long way. Just saw Esteban Ocon mighty these cars who turned 13 and 14.
34:42Absolutely full commitment. Ooh, a little twitch there coming out of 17. Where, where's his head,
34:47uh, this weekend talking about thinking a long way into the future. He's thinking about 2027 and where
34:53that might be for him. I think it's a real challenge. I, I, I'm struggling to see where he could
34:58find a
34:59seat in F1 really. I think, you know, there's some talk of potentially at Cadillac, but I think they
35:07are pretty happy with the two drivers they've got. And so I just, you know, Jack Doohan, he's the
35:12reserve driver there. I'm sure he's, uh, he's knocking on IO's shoulder who's sitting next to him,
35:18saying, pick me, pick me. But we, you know, we know they've tested, uh, Leonardo Fornaroli. They've
35:23tested Rafael Camara. They've tested some Toyota junior drivers, two or three of them. So they are
35:29hunting around. For Ocon, I think this might be the end of his, his F1 journey. For the time being,
35:36at least. And that would be a real shame for a man who let us not forget as Verstappen goes
35:40fastest with a 146.6 is a former Grand Prix winner. He is. And it would be a shame. He's
35:46no
35:46question about his talent. We're seeing a lot of them have those snaps on power of the exit of the
35:50final
35:51proper corner. Um, but also I think we need to start making room for the next generation of talent
35:58coming through. And there's so few seats on that grid. There's so few drivers moving year to year
36:04that at some point it is going to be cutthroat. And you have to find, uh, space because you're
36:09seeing formula three champions, formula two champions, the likes of Fornaroli winning their rookie years,
36:14go without any F1 seats. And that makes the system slightly unjust in my opinion. I fully agree.
36:19And, and I think, you know, with all due respect to Esteban, winning a Grand Prix five years ago
36:26is not indicative, uh, barometer of what's happening today. You know, today he's down 13,
36:34five in qualifying to Ollie Bearman, who's in his sophomore year of Formula One. You know,
36:38Esteban is, should be the team leader on that team. And you've got young Ollie there who's done a
36:44fantastic job in difficult circumstances. And the season, the car started off season well,
36:49and they've gone backwards. It's not an easy car to drive. And Ollie's done a great job.
36:52He's a long way ahead of Esteban, um, in the back, in the head to head. So he's set up
36:58really to be
36:59team leader going forward and having a young drive alongside feels good. There you go. There's now a
37:03third team. Let's go. Yeah, there's your third team. 116 starts, by the way, for Esteban Ocon,
37:10since his last win, since that win in Hungary. So if he does win this weekend, say he did win
37:16this
37:16weekend, that breaks the record for the longest gap between wins. Uh, Kimi Raikkonen, 114 starts.
37:23There you go. I'd be quite happy to have two wins in Formula One. So, uh, well, if you'd have
37:28had
37:28three races, I reckon you'd have had two wins. Just two. Okay. Three. If you want to be greedy,
37:33it's entirely up to you. I don't think I'd have any. We'll talk more about that at another time.
37:40Ted, though, in the pit lane has news down at Audi, where, uh, Gabriel Bortoletto has done a couple of
37:47laps with a huge aero rake on the front. Uh, and there's just in the garage taking that off. And
37:53that's because Audi have the largest upgrade package out of anyone in, uh, well, in living
38:00memory of this season. They've got 14 upgrades crafting in one weekend. There's the rear wing,
38:07the rear wing end plate, the rear wing beam wing. That's the one just underneath the main plane.
38:12The rear suspension in the rear corner, the halo, uh, and the fairing above it. And then the engine
38:17cover as well. Stay with me. New diffuser, new floor edge, uh, devices, as well as the new floor
38:24itself, new front suspension, new nose cone, front wing, and front wing end plate. 14 changes. They
38:31really have been busy. So, uh, they're hoping that this is going to, and Alan McNish, as well as, uh,
38:37the team boss, as well as, uh, Bortoletto and Hulkenberg are just saying that that's a massive effort
38:42from everybody in Himville. And they're expecting or hoping that puts them up towards Alpine, who've made
38:47gains themselves and racing bulls. They've been on the edge of the scoring points, haven't they?
38:53Hulkenberg had a point in Madrid, unless I'm very much mistaken. Uh, and they're hoping with these 14
38:58upgrades, they'll be, uh, up there further on. Uh, thanks ever so much, Ted. Oh, we've got a fire in
39:04the, uh, in the pit lane. A fire in the pit lane? Well, some very smoky breaks down at Williams.
39:08Yeah. Uh, is that Carlos Sainz? I'm just, uh, well, as you say, I'm just outside Audi,
39:13but I'm just walking towards it. Uh, yeah, look, here we go. We can see it right now, Ted. Yes,
39:17very smoky, uh, from the rear of that Williams. And it is Carlos Sainz. And you can see right rear
39:23brake on fire. Ooh, something been rubbing or has too much been stress, uh, too much stress put on
39:30the actual brakes themselves, uh, rather than, of course, the, the mechanical braking, which sends
39:35to control, uh, rear braking on these cars. Yeah. I mean, the rear brakes really don't do very much
39:40with, uh, these 20, 26 cars. So I don't know, you know, maybe he's practiced the pit lane entry,
39:46come in hot because you do arrive there at quite a rate of knots and jump on the brakes. And
39:51maybe that,
39:52that was enough to, to set the brakes off on fire, but, uh, that'd be a big concern because of,
39:58they can't afford to lose track time. But unfortunately, when something like that happens,
40:02they now have to look at the brake ducts. They have to look at the, the, what we call the
40:06cake
40:06tin that goes around the, the brake disc itself, rear suspension, blah, blah, blah. You have to look at
40:12all these bits to see if there's any fire damage. And I wonder if there's any connection to that and
40:18all the other chat that we've heard about brakes so far, usually the pulling one way or the other is
40:23more often the front axle. But, uh, yeah, I think, uh, it's no surprise that, or not no surprise,
40:30it's peculiar that we're hearing so much about brakes and we've just seen Carlos's brakes also on fire.
40:34Well, yeah, Alex was, uh, was on the radio talking about them, wasn't he? So they'll,
40:38they'll, they haven't called Alex in. He's carrying on, but, uh, we shall see if he comes at the end
40:44of
40:45this lap. What are you listening for? I was listening to see how, how the deployment worked
40:49there for George Ross. You can see the light flashing quite early on down that straight.
40:53He's going to pick up a distant toe there from Charles Leclerc, I think, ahead of him on track
41:00and, uh, sees about 1.3 seconds behind. So that's close enough to pick up a toe. And the slipstream
41:06here
41:07is not just about less drag, but by having just purely in terms of speed, but by having a slipstream,
41:15you also become more efficient with the battery. And so you theoretically are deploying less, uh,
41:20of the battery as well. Another slight twitch from Liam Lawson. Um, I think that might be a place
41:27where in the past, get the power down, everything's going to be absolutely fine. Now with the reduced
41:31downforce on these cars, Jamie, you've got to react a bit differently as a driver. Exactly. And there's
41:36going to be a lot of fine tuning in this session. They've done thousands of laps on the simulators.
41:40They know where they want to be deploying all of their batteries, some of their battery, part of
41:43their battery, everything. But you get to reality and the feeling in the car is very different,
41:48the way that the track is this year, the track temperature, everything. And it might not be that
41:51they want to be dumping all of that energy at the exit of that corner because of how twitchy it
41:56is
41:56looking for the drivers. Liam Lawson looked almost relieved to be back driving the racing bulls.
42:03Finally. A car that I like. Yeah. It's, you know, he's had his Red Bull adventure. He's proven a point,
42:09I think, in his Red Bull adventure by qualifying within a tenth of max at Zandvoort and, you know,
42:14not that far off the other two. He's proven a point that actually he,
42:20he was judged a bit too early maybe last year. And now he's back in a car where he could
42:26drive more
42:26comfortably in, in a sort of less pressure situation as well, I guess, in the bottom part of the midfield.
42:34Uh, two top seven finishes for Liam Lawson, uh, in his time at Rebel as Kimi Antonelli goes fastest
42:40from Max Verstappen, who's back now in the pits. We'll just follow Charles Leclerc across the line
42:45this is his best lap of the session so far. And he goes third fastest, Ted, uh, down at Williams.
42:52Thank you. So, uh, Carlos Sainz, uh, stays in the car for the time being. Uh, they're having a look
42:58at
42:58the, uh, they're having a look. I think you're looking at it now. Yeah, just a replay. He was waving
43:02to
43:03the team when he came in, because I think he'd already sensed that there was a, there was an issue
43:06and
43:06a problem. So I think it's a systems problem with a, with a potential, um, maybe the...
43:12Two seconds, Ted. Okay, we need to switch up the cap P1 by P2, rear brakes on fires.
43:20I think they weren't, because they're, the area they're looking at in the, in the, uh, in,
43:24in the cockpit with the steering wheel and the settings point for me towards the, they weren't,
43:30they weren't getting the, uh, the slowing down, uh, slowing down element of the rear axle from,
43:36from the energy recovery system. And those rear brakes were having to do too much work. So I think
43:41there might have been a systems issue with the energy recovery system, rather than something
43:46with the brakes not working. Thanks, Ted. Well, broke the engine, I think.
43:50Okay, Hamden pushing. Hamden pushing a recharge on. Yeah, yeah, yeah, come on. The engine's broken.
43:55Yeah, we're looking at the engine, slow button on, just lots of traffic behind.
43:58He's got Kimi Antonelli right behind him at the moment, going through turn 13, Isaac Hadjar.
44:03He's like, if the engineer's just trying to say to him, stop talking and listen to me.
44:07Yeah. He's like, oh, woe is me. But in, in, in Isaac's defense, and I'll give him a bit of
44:14a defense
44:14on this one, he's not been in the car since Budapest. He's, you've got a bit of muscle memory
44:19to start learning and everything comes at you in these cars very fast indeed. Might take him a,
44:24a couple of sessions, Jamie, to get back on track. Yeah. I mean, also that sounded a bit like he's
44:29got all sorts going on in that cockpit, whether it's the brakes, the beginning, the engine.
44:33He's clearly not a happy bunny inside, inside or behind the wheel. George Russell now going purple.
44:39I thought it was interesting just flicking back a little bit. Kimi Antonelli purposefully staying
44:43out of the toe. I don't know if that's the data for the team. They want to get their own
44:48references
44:48outside of the toe with the battery deployment, exactly what Karun was saying. So I thought that
44:54was interesting that he's clearly been told to not be in the slipstream. Yeah.
44:58And Russell at the moment has got a bit of a gap, hasn't he, to Perez in front of him.
45:05While all that was happening, by the way, Lando Norris was on a lap that could have taken him
45:09fastest overall, but he pitted and aborted the lap. Worth keeping in mind as George Russell now goes
45:16third fastest, three tenths off his teammate Kimi Antonelli and Isaac Hadjar has returned to the pits.
45:23Right now, stopped in his box. Got a lovely view of the McLaren and the Red Bull pit box here.
45:29There he goes. And they'll find out, hopefully for him, whatever's wrong with that Red Bull power
45:36trains in the back of his car. Yeah. I mean, they're also a team we should mention who have brought
45:41a
45:41reasonable update here this weekend. Red Bull, Ted talked about Audi and Williams and McLaren. They're
45:49the four teams who bought a decent upgrade package here to this weekend. See all those dots that are
45:56stuck on the rear wing. Has to help with the reverse parking.
46:01There's a reference there for the engineers to look at the deflection of the wing. You know,
46:07there's all tests that the teams want to be doing so they can understand this heavily revised Williams
46:13car. What they don't want to be doing is dealing with a fire on the rear breakdown.
46:17Very true. I thought that was for when you're reversing around a corner, to be fair.
46:21How was your reversing?
46:22Absolutely superb. Past first time. I only know about that. My boy's got his driving test today.
46:27Good luck, James, on that one. Fingers crossed that he'll be driving me about from, you know,
46:33around about nine o'clock when I get back on Sunday morning. Right. 20 minutes gone in this session.
46:39Kimi Antonelli, championship leader, fastest on the track from Max Verstappen and George Russell.
46:44Charles Leclerc and now Lewis Hamilton in the sixth tenth separating the top five.
47:06Welcome back to Baku. 81 points in the lead of the championship.
47:09Kimi Antonelli has stopped at turn seven and the steering wheel is off and he's getting out of the car.
47:20And when you lose hydraulic pressure or hydraulic fluid,
47:25there are all sorts of things that are not going to work on a Formula One car.
47:29And that's why he's getting out. Yeah. And all of that smoke is clearly concerned.
47:33He's waving the marshals to get a fire extinguisher. So he's maybe spotted a bit of flame somewhere.
47:39We won't be seeing that. Here we go. Well, the brakes will be overheating.
47:41That's for a start. But the smoke's coming out of the side paws from where the radiator set.
47:47Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Don't need to do that just yet.
47:50Oh, he's doing it. He's not listening to words you just said there, Jamie.
47:53And he's spraying it on top of the bodywork. That's not...
47:55I would argue that wasn't needed just then. That's going to be a bit of a mess for the mechanics.
48:00Yeah. Trouble is, Kimi Antonelli's told them that they need the fire extinguisher.
48:04He was on an out lap, wasn't he? And the problem is, is when you go from driving at speed
48:08to then suddenly stopping, there's a reason all the mechanics come with fans immediately
48:12to the engine to cool them down and the brakes when you come in the pits.
48:16And obviously, when you stop like this, there isn't that.
48:18Ideally, there was just some fans that you could have used around the engine,
48:22and that would have probably done the job perfectly.
48:24Maybe that's a thought going forward.
48:26Is maybe the FIA needs to have a couple of fans placed at Marshall Post
48:30in case cars do stop later.
48:33Yes, because that's where engine damage, everything happens.
48:35We know that's a new power unit for Kimi from not long ago or two races ago.
48:39So, yeah, to do an engine just because you have to stop
48:42or to have a combustion engine issue because of that is not what you want.
48:48To be fair, it might be in come the race.
48:51Sorry, yes.
48:51I would imagine that's an old unit for practice.
48:54You're right.
48:54Let's listen.
49:04It went quite suddenly, didn't it?
49:05Because he came out of that right-hander of turn six,
49:09and he was able to do three gear shifts.
49:11Now, if you lose hydraulics, you won't be able to change gears.
49:14So, it clearly went right at the end of that straight, and...
49:17Did he just get a visor full of fire extinguisher fluid there as well?
49:21100%.
49:22I hope that didn't go in his eye.
49:24That is not a good start for the championship leader or for Mercedes here.
49:28No, there's bits of that car that'll be, you know, just melting with the heat soak
49:32as quickly as a gelato on a hot day in Bologna, where Kimi Antonelli comes from.
49:37So, that's...
49:39When mechanics in the garage will be watching that,
49:42you can just see them wincing, can't you?
49:43Because they know their lunch break has been cancelled,
49:46and they've got an awful lot of work to do in the two hours before the next session.
49:50Ted, down to you.
49:52You're absolutely right, Corrine.
49:53They're watching the screen as if you would watch somebody slowly reversing into your car
49:58when it's parked on the street.
50:00It's like, what's going on here?
50:02Oh, no.
50:03What are you doing?
50:04I mean, don't blame the Marshall.
50:06Marshall feels that it's not safe and wants to put out any smoke or anything like that,
50:11and they're at liberty to do it.
50:13But, yes, it is the Mercedes mechanics who will have to clear this up.
50:17Better it doesn't happen in FP2, because that's when they need to understand the tyres with the long runs.
50:22But, well, we saw Toto Wolff.
