00:10It was about six months ago.
00:12I was in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and I was texting with Nick Bocott, who works at the big Sweetwater place
00:21out there.
00:22And I said, hey, I'm in town performing, man.
00:24If you want to come out, I'll set you up on the guest list.
00:27And he's like, oh, you know, I'm going to see Zach and the boys tonight.
00:31And I was like, what?
00:32He's like, yeah, Zach Sabbath's in town.
00:34So I texted J.D. and I said, hey, what time are you going on?
00:38They said nine.
00:39My show was over by nine, 15 minutes away.
00:41So, you know, I missed the first couple tunes, but I got there.
00:44And, yeah, just Zach's face when he saw me standing on the side of the stage is like, why would
00:50my fellow Jersey boy be in Fort Wayne, Indiana?
00:53But, yeah, it was great, man.
00:55I love J.D.
00:56He's one of the few rock stars I'm taller than and a lot taller than, as a matter of fact.
01:00I like Zach.
01:02You know, you go to Zach's side of the stage.
01:04The amps are all nice and clean.
01:05There's nothing sitting on top of him.
01:07J.D. has drinks, all kinds of stuff on his.
01:09I go, Zach, what's up with that?
01:10He goes, we call that the low rent district.
01:14And there's a certain scent to J.D.'s side, too.
01:18There is.
01:19There's something.
01:20I don't know.
01:21And it seems the same place everywhere they play.
01:24I know I go there a lot because J.D., like yourself, are big hockey fans.
01:28And so whenever Darren McCarty and I get together, we always go and see the guys from Zach Sabbath and,
01:34of course, BLS and whatnot.
01:36But it's pretty cool that all these years later, I mean, you get to do comedy and stuff, but you
01:40get to travel the country and see some of your friends and bands and live this life.
01:47That's pretty cool.
01:48Yeah.
01:49And I get to see you when I go on tour, which is fun.
01:52And, yeah, it's great because you know what it is?
01:54Like being a comedian, it's a very solitary existence, right?
01:59It's just me.
02:01And on the road with the band, you get that brotherhood of going, all right, we're going city to city.
02:06You know, we're going to kick Kansas City's ass next week.
02:08And you get all that, but I get none of the drama of being in the band because I'm just
02:15a comedian, you know?
02:16That's right.
02:17So when they're brawling, I'm just like, yeah, I'll see you guys later.
02:20I'm going to go for a jog.
02:21That's hysterical you say that because I just interviewed Jim Jeffries a couple weeks ago, and I said, normally I'm
02:26interviewing rock stars.
02:27He's like, yeah, well, I've got no one to argue with.
02:29You know, and it's the same type of thing.
02:33Like you just said, that's it, man.
02:34It's you.
02:35You're the band.
02:36No matter how much you love your bandmates, you know, on the road in those close quarters, you know, you're
02:42basically in a submarine, you know, which is what Zach calls it.
02:45You know, let's get in the sub.
02:47You know, tensions flare.
02:49You know, it happens.
02:50And especially when you're under pressure, man, you know, the road crew guys, man, they're the unsung heroes.
02:55I mean, they're, you know, first one's up, last one's to bed.
02:58So, yeah, it gets a little testy sometimes, but that's just part of the gig.
03:01Yeah, I can imagine.
03:02And so terrorizing telemarketers aid is out.
03:06You know, I mean, do you guys still get telemarketer calls or do you guys like how do you do
03:11you sign up for certain things?
03:12You know, they're going to call.
03:14How does this work?
03:15Well, yeah, I mean, you know, you know, because of technology, luckily, you know, we have the do not call
03:22list.
03:23So everybody's on the do not call list.
03:25We're on the please call list.
03:27So I think we got the only listed phone number that telemarketers can actually call now.
03:33So they all they all call us.
03:36Yeah, they recognize the number.
03:37I think I've called this number.
03:39Oh, that that is 100 percent true, because the same the same like 20 companies call, you know, and we'll
03:46take a few years between doing these albums, you know, and then, you know, it's actually a home line.
03:53And so there'll be like two years will pass and we'll plug the phone in over a gym's house to
03:59the wall.
03:59And within 30 seconds, the phone will start ringing.
04:02No kidding.
04:03Wow.
04:03Yeah.
04:04So how much is as a chain since the first one you did?
04:07Because now it's like you can put these little skits on, you know, with the animated skits on like the
04:13Internet and stuff like that.
04:14And it's not just a CD vinyl.
04:16And it's like, you know, all over the place.
04:18I mean, it must have changed a lot.
04:19Huh?
04:20Yeah.
04:20Eighty percent of the sales are going to be streaming, you know.
04:23So, you know, people like, you know, prank calls and stuff like that.
04:27We have eight volumes of these calls.
04:30And yeah, it's great because you could just go on your phone and and click and start streaming them right
04:36away.
04:37There's three animations from the new album that are up on all my social media you could check out.
04:42So, yeah, it's a good way to it's a good way to, you know, get the word out and spread
04:46it a lot faster.
04:47You know, we did these DVDs, hidden camera DVDs called Meet the Creeps, like in the early 2000s.
04:54And we just sold them on DVD at our gigs.
04:56But nobody buys DVDs anymore.
04:58So we've been recutting them and putting them on our social media and on our YouTube.
05:02And and people love them.
05:04You know, you just you couldn't get that kind of exposure back then.
05:07So, you know, it's cool to like kind of recycle some of our old stuff.
05:11Yeah, I guess that's kind of what the point I was getting.
05:13Yeah, it's different now.
05:13Now, how long does it take you to to make one of these records?
05:16I suppose it it kind of it all hinges on how many calls you get.
05:20Right. But I mean, is this like a two, three, four year project?
05:23What is it?
05:25What are we building SpaceX?
05:28I mean, it's it's friend calls, dude.
05:31We just I thought they called you.
05:33Don't you have to wait for these people to call?
05:35Yeah, but they call all the time.
05:37And the thing is, when you pick up, it registers as a live line and then they all sell that
05:44information, you know, to 10 other telemarketer firms.
05:48So they all share information.
05:49That's why we'll get calls a lot where the telemarketer will come on and say, you know, is this James
05:54or Don?
05:55And we're like, yeah.
05:56And they're like, yeah, it looks like in the notes you talk to somebody.
06:00There was some kind of problem.
06:01We're like, no, we didn't have any problem.
06:03You know, so, you know, the old telemarketer leaves, the new one comes in.
06:07But, you know, like the song says, new boss, same as the old boss.
06:11So how long did this one take to make this one?
06:14I mean, it took about a year only because, you know, like the first few months we were rusty and
06:19we, you know, we just couldn't, you know, we just couldn't quite get the edge that we wanted.
06:24And then, you know, you just got to get one and then they all kind of fall into place after
06:28that.
06:29But, you know, we're never in a rush.
06:30You know, it's kind of it is like being in a band in that sense, too, is like I go
06:35to Jim's house and it's like we're a band recording in the studio, you know.
06:38So I go there, spend the whole day.
06:40Sometimes we get one call.
06:41Sometimes we get three or four.
06:43Yeah.
06:43And then, of course, you got your your solo record coming out.
06:46Comedy is killing me.
06:48And obviously I see the, you know, the album cover behind you.
06:51It looks reminiscent of something.
06:53I can't quite put my finger on it.
06:56But it's Typo Negative's least favorite album.
07:00But I love this album and I think it's brilliant.
07:03Their album's called Life is Killing Me, which is which is such a clever title.
07:08Mine is called Comedy is Killing Me.
07:10And, you know, it's my tribute to them.
07:12You know, I do all my albums as a tribute to the bands that I love, Saxon and Thin Lizzy
07:16and Priest.
07:17So this one's for Typo and I recorded at Typo Negative's favorite metal bar in Brooklyn.
07:25So it's got a whole theme to it.
07:27And at the end, I die.
07:29So for people who don't like my comedy, they'll be psyched.
07:33Guar comes out or something.
07:34How does this work?
07:35I've been killed by Guar twice on stage, but now I go into the electric chair at the end of
07:40this one.
07:41So you get to watch me suffer.
07:43So how long did it work?
07:44How long did you work up this set for this record?
07:46It took a couple of years, you know, to really hone the set.
07:50And, you know, I'll be like every other band and say it's my best album ever.
07:57But it really is.
07:59And I love where I did it.
08:00You know, Duff's in Brooklyn.
08:01If you've never been, man, next time you come to the East Coast, I got to take you, man.
08:04It is a museum to hard rock and metal.
08:07The most mellow band on the jukebox is Slayer.
08:11It's just one of those places.
08:13The walls and ceilings are just covered with memorabilia.
08:16And all kinds of, you know, Glenn Danzig's jockstrap.
08:19I mean, everything in that place.
08:21And when it's all lit up, it just looks so cool on camera.
08:24So I'm just psyched that I did it there.
08:27And thanks to Type O for, you know, letting me use the artwork and all that stuff.
08:31Because I was, you know, that's a big part of it for me, the packaging.
08:35Right.
08:36Yeah.
08:36I was going to ask you.
08:37So do any of these bands ever push back?
08:39I mean, you kind of, you know, the Saxon guys.
08:41And I'm sure you know Johnny Kelly and those guys.
08:43Yeah.
08:43So whatnot.
08:44So they ever push back or they say, no, go ahead.
08:46Or you got to float them a few bucks or buy them a dinner or something.

08:49Um, you know, maybe I should buy them dinner.

08:55No, listen, you know, I asked permission, you know, and I've been lucky.
08:59You know, everyone's said, yeah, you know, my last album was a parody of Motorhead, No Sleep Till Hammersmith.
09:06So, you know, I got the actual original, original artwork that they let me use.
09:11And I photoshopped myself onto the cover with Lemmy and the boys.
09:16So, no, it's been great, man.
09:17Um, everybody's been super cool about it.
09:19You know, even, you know, Biff from Saxon insisted I do an album.
09:24So I did Denim and Laughter.
09:26So, you know, um, that was a direct request.
09:29Yeah.

09:31You should, uh, you should take one of the Kiss records and, and see how that works.

09:37I got Dressed to Kill would, would lend itself to comedy, right?
09:40Because if you, if you kill and that means you did good.

10:24what's kind of surprised you about talking to these rock stars or, you know, as, as,
10:28as there any, is there any challenges with that podcast?
10:31Uh, well, the first challenge is getting, uh, DJs from Detroit to call it the right
10:36name.

11:03of music and sports, um, and vice versa, although we don't get many athletes, uh, but we've had
11:09a few, um, love to have McCarty on to talk about, you know, music and his love of music.
11:15Cause I know, you know, what a rocker he is, but that, you know, you get, I think it just
11:19gives fans and also us a different, you know, um, side of their favorite people, you know,
11:27and we had Blackie Lawless on, you know, him, him telling stories about, you know, taking
11:32the subway up to Yankee stadium with his dad to see Mickey Mantle play.
11:36And, and, and, and you just hear it in his voice, just like, you know, how much that
11:41meant to him as a kid, you know, that he did that with his dad or, you know, I mean,
11:45it
11:46could be any kind of memory of, um, you know, you know, growing up playing sports or, you
11:53know, a lot of people we interview have played sports arenas and they're friends with, with
11:57big sports athletes.
11:59So, um, that's been fun, man.
12:01You know, like I said, I think it gives people another, uh, rather than the regular interview,
12:06you get a little something different.
12:07Yeah.
12:08I listened to an episode with Blackie and it's funny because it's like, sometimes I think
12:11these guys, you know, they have to talk about their projects and their tours and blah, blah,
12:14blah.
12:14But when they get out of their box and they start talking about other things like sports,
12:18especially if they're big baseball fans like that, you should get Geddy Leon to talk
12:22about baseball.
12:23My God, you wouldn't get them off the line.
12:24Yeah.
12:25I, I, I don't know.
12:26I've heard, I've, it's been buzzing on the internet that he's a little busy recently,
12:30but, um, have you, have you seen any of those shows?
12:33I know I did.
12:34I haven't been able to get to one, but, uh, I mean, it's, it's, it's amazing.
12:38I mean, I have not seen one bad comment.
12:40So, uh, God, dude, the show is, I saw it two weeks ago here in Detroit.
12:44It was the best show I've seen all year and it's not even close.
12:47It was unbelievable.

12:53going to do, if they're going to make more music or whatever, but his home literally
12:58is, um, categorized as a sports museum in Canada.
13:04He has so much baseball memorabilia in Toronto.

13:09He's got a autographed baseballs.
13:11There's a guy here in Detroit.

13:18He's got like an autographed baseball from all four of the original, all four Beatles,
13:23um, you know, president stuff like that.
13:24He's got, he's got this unbelievable collection of wild autographs on baseballs.

13:31Cause you, you know, you got to carry baseballs around everywhere you go, you know?
13:34So if a band has five members, you gotta, I guess you gotta wear cargo shorts everywhere

14:54That's Tony's that you drove all the way up on your motorcycle, uh, for, uh, to just,
14:59you didn't even have the bacon.
15:01We, we just went there to look at giant stacks of bacon.
15:05That's pretty much what we did.
15:07That place for people that don't know, they, they serve you a pound of bacon with everything.
15:11And Don's eyes were like, Holy Christ, look at that.
15:14Cause the kids next to us, you know, they, they were at some hockey tournament or wherever
15:17the case was just a stack of bacon like this.
15:20It's literally a pound of bacon.
15:23And that's all crazy.
