00:07Marvel video games have been around almost as long as the medium itself, and there are some truly stunning experiences
00:14to be had.
00:16Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're shining a light on the absolute best video games featuring Marvel's vast legacy of
00:23heroes and villains.
00:24Gang of Costume Nutjobs is taking the city apart piece by piece. Time I return the favor.
00:30But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring the
00:36bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:40Marvel's Wolverine
00:48Despite some shortcomings in its mechanics, which almost overshadowed everything else at launch, there's still a lot of fun to
00:54be had with Marvel's Wolverine.
00:56Insomniac offers players a more linear, action-driven experience compared to their work on Spider-Man.
01:02Set in the same universe, in a world where the X-Men don't exist, it follows Logan contending with sinister
01:07forces that seek to destroy mutants, as well as those closer to home.
01:11What kind of defenses does this place have?
01:16You don't know what Trask is building.
01:20I assure you, you are safe.
01:23For players who want a simple yet bloodthirsty display of the famous mutant's ferocious power, with an alternate look at
01:29Wolverine's history, it's still easy to be entertained.
01:33It may be a little mindless, but ripping through hordes of enemies brings plenty of gory delight.
01:45Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales
01:57After teasing his future in their first Spider-Man game, Insomniac delivered a smaller story for Miles Morales, as he
02:04got used to being a hero without Peter looking over his shoulder.
02:07Miles' solo story highlighted the difference between the two characters.
02:11His connection to Harlem in the wake of his father's death offered a great foundation for his growth.
02:17His unique cloaking mechanic and electric attacks also made him feel just different enough to play as, on top of
02:23the incredible traversal and combat of the first game.
02:34The story may have been smaller, with the relationship between Miles and Finn not bringing quite the dramatic flair as
02:41Peter and Otto, but it was a great step in establishing Miles for the future.
02:46My mom would be very upset.
02:50Miles?
02:51X-Men Origins Wolverine
02:53Although the movie it's based on still gets rightfully made fun of, this tie-in game is another story.
02:59X-Men Origins Wolverine
03:07Developer Raven Software delivered a visceral M-rated brawler that fully embraced what Logan's power set actually implies, relentless violence.
03:16And naturally, that scratches a very precise itch.
03:19Enemies could slash, blast, and tear chunks off of Wolverine, and you'd watch his flesh knit itself back together as
03:26you fought on.
03:27Similarly, you could rip through hordes of gun-toting minions with extreme prejudice, painting the environments red.
03:33Another game that's a bit too short, it still manages to fill every moment with so much action it's impossible
03:39for any Wolvie fan not to be entertained.
03:41Dammit, John, where the hell are you? I think I have a line on Creed.
03:47How could you, darlin'? You're dead.
03:49Deadpool
03:50A few years before Deadpool became a household name, High Moon Studios nailed what makes the Merc with a Mouth
03:56so entertaining in his own solo game.
03:59Phew! That's what happens when you mix C4 with a bean burrito.
04:05Now be honest, I'm not the only one with a little bit of shit in their pants right now, am
04:10I?
04:11With Nolan North delivering a pitch perfect performance as Wade Wilson, the writing leans completely into the character's fourth wall
04:18breaking anarchy.
04:19Gameplay may not be anything to write home about, it's a serviceable mix of swordplay and gunplay, but what truly
04:25earns this game a spot on the list is Deadpool's manic energy, which runs through every single scene.
04:31Whether he's behaving like a jackass in front of the X-Men, making a crack before blowing someone away, or
04:37making some meta reference to the long lineage of video games, it's hard not to be entertained.
04:42We're done here!
04:49Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions
04:51Beanox's 2010 adventure sent players bouncing between four distinct versions of the Webslinger.
04:57The classic amazing, the brooding noir, the futuristic 2099, and the symbiote action of Ultimate Spider-Man.
05:10Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions
05:13Each dimension came with its own style and tone, and each Spidey had a different bag of tricks.
05:18Not only was each version fun to play as, but having four different styles to play naturally kept everything fresh
05:24and moving at a nice pace.
05:26The noir levels, playing like a stealth thriller, were particular highlights.
05:30Shattered Dimensions proved to players what comic readers already knew, that the Spider-Man brand is strong enough to support
05:35wildly different interpretations without losing its core identity.
05:39Now to another Spider-Man, and to bestow a different gift upon him.
05:46The black suit? What am I doing in the black suit? I hate this thing!
05:50Marvel Cosmic Invasion
05:52Throughout the 90s, it was common to see your favorite superheroes in side-scrolling beat-em-ups.
05:57While there aren't nearly as many as there once were, Cosmic Invasion is an excellent homage.
06:03Heads up!
06:10With the villain Annihilus leading an intergalactic invasion, a group of heroes band together, fighting against his forces throughout the
06:17Marvel Universe.
06:18Beyond the 16-bit pixelated art style, which looks fantastic, it feels like an evolution of what came before, with
06:25voice acting, a larger roster, and more varied movesets and character animations that make everyone feel more distinct.
06:31While simple, there's nothing about this that isn't fun, especially when teaming up with a friend to lay the superhero
06:38smack down.
06:48X-Men Legends 2 – Rise of Apocalypse
06:51Building on the foundation of its predecessor, Rise of Apocalypse expanded nearly every element of what made the original X
06:58-Men Legends work so well.
07:09The roster included not just the X-Men, but members of the Brotherhood, like Magneto, Juggernaut, and Mystique, as both
07:16sides united against the looming threat of Apocalypse.
07:19Even 20 years ago, it was exciting to see an alliance between teams with such opposing ideologies.
07:25Not to mention, the four-player co-op was a massive draw, whether playing locally or online.
07:31With a deeper RPG progression system and a wider variety of missions than the first game, X-Men Legends 2
07:37refined the blueprint that would eventually give birth to the beloved Ultimate Alliance series.
07:42X-Men Legends 2 – Spider-Man 2 games
07:50When open-world superhero games were still in their infancy, and one year before it delivered Ultimate Spider-Man,
07:56Treyarch developed one of the most important movie tie-ins of all time.
08:01X-Men Fibonибer
08:01You better not get pizza delivered this way.
08:03X-Men suspense
08:05B. go
08:06X-Men
08:07Same one, this is a traffic hazard.
08:09The studio revolutionized what it meant to be Spider-Man inside a video game.
08:13The physics-based web-swinging mechanics stunned everyone,
08:17and never before had we controlled a hero with such fluidity and with such a firm grasp of their power
08:22set.
08:23Mastering the rhythm of navigating NYC was as satisfying as taking on Spidey's many rogues, if not more so.
08:31And it didn't hurt that there was plenty to do outside of the main story.
08:34Even today, the mechanics and controls of Spider-Man 2 are still fondly looked back on by many.
08:40Sorry to leave you hanging, Rhino, but I don't want to be accused of poaching.
08:43Marvel Tocan Fighting Souls
08:45With Marvel vs. Capcom sadly being dormant, Fighting Souls seemingly seeks to fill the void,
08:51and does a pretty damn good job of doing so.
09:00Players face opponents in 4v4 matches either as individual hero or villains with assist characters,
09:06or through the more traditional swap-in-and-swap-out method.
09:09It both looks, and most importantly, feels incredible to play.
09:13Just like other Marvel fighters, it's so much fun mastering everyone on the roster,
09:18learning their strengths and weaknesses, and testing yourself against others.
09:21Developed by Arc System Works, one of the best studios when it comes to fighting games,
09:27with franchises like Guilty Gear and Granblue Fantasy under its belt,
09:31this is yet another banger put out by the team.
09:34Some call Doom Arrogate.
09:37It is a mistake.
09:40Resisting me is the true arrogance.
09:44X-Men
09:45Anyone who grew up during the golden age of arcades probably lost a lot of quarters to this one.
09:50This Konami classic puts you in the role of one of six X-Men,
09:54fighting to stop the latest scheme of Magneto.
10:02Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Dazzler all mostly control the same,
10:08though with each of their special abilities differentiating them.
10:11While the gameplay is simple by today's standards,
10:13the joy of taking a mutant team into action with your friends was too addictive to pass up back then.
10:19Simple, yes, but the way in which it is handled with strong visuals and controls
10:23makes the experience stand out still all these years later.
10:35Marvel's Midnight Suns
10:37A tactical deck-building RPG with social sim elements,
10:41Midnight Suns is definitely a strange combination of genres,
10:44and yet it all works wonderfully together.
10:54We play as the Hunter, a new customizable character,
10:58who teams up with the Midnight Suns to take on Lilith, the mother of demons.
11:02While the story is typical superhero fare, the gameplay is obviously very different.
11:07Coming from Firaxis, known for producing incredible tactics games,
11:10the twist of cards acting as your abilities gives you a level of strategic satisfaction we never grow tired of,
11:16especially thanks to a roster with the likes of Ghost Rider, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange.
11:21Seriously, building up your relationships with these heroes is almost as fun as laying the tactical smackdown.
11:26In the meantime, in honor of our missing companion,
11:29the rest of you may feel free to smash away.
11:33The Punisher
11:352005's The Punisher may be one of the darkest, grittiest Marvel games ever made.
11:47Although that shouldn't be too surprising, given the nature of the character,
11:51it's still especially brutal for a Marvel game.
11:54It's mostly a typical third-person shooter with standard guns, melee weapons,
11:58and the ability to use your environments against your opponents.
12:01Mechanics are more than serviceable, but what sets it apart is Frank's barbaric, sometimes tortuous acts.
12:07Since you're controlling one of Marvel's most morally gray characters, things get pretty vicious.
12:12Which is to say, it's a pretty accurate Punisher experience.
12:16You may not think of The Punisher when you think of great Marvel games,
12:19but this proves we don't always have to be the good guy to have fun.
12:32Marvel's Spider-Man 2
12:42Although the writing didn't quite hit like the original,
12:45Marvel's Spider-Man 2 still more than delivered on spectacle, gameplay, and performance.
12:50With control over both Peter and Miles,
12:53you always had the fantastic acrobatic movement and traversal that comes from being a Spider-Hero,
12:58but you also had variety in their abilities.
13:01The Prime!
13:03That had to hurt!
13:04Yeah!
13:05Miles' electricity was as explosive as it was in his solo adventure,
13:10with his cloaking ability making him stealthier when dealing with groups.
13:13And Peter's new symbiote suit brought a wealth of fun layers in combat,
13:17while bringing out a terrific performance from Yuri Lowenthal.
13:21Plus, with villains like Kraven, Venom, and Mysterio, this sequel packed plenty of punch.
13:27Ah!
13:28Congratulations.
13:29You get to live out the rest of your life behind bars.
13:33And I owe it all to you.
13:35Marvel Ultimate Alliance
13:37In 2006, Ultimate Alliance was the Marvel fans' dream game.
13:41A group of supervillains form an alliance in hopes of obtaining ultimate power and control of the world.
13:47So, naturally, the heroes do the same.
13:49Hey, Cap, looks like you-
13:55Could use some help?
13:58Ultimate Alliance has us picking a team of four from an impressive hero roster
14:03to travel through the Marvel Universe, taking on legions of enemies in the process.
14:07It was, and still is, a nice blend of simpler RPG mechanics with the excitement of Marvel.
14:14At its heart, it's a dungeon crawler that focuses on your squad and what abilities you outfit them with.
14:19Do you go with your favorite characters or a crew that offers unique buffs?
14:23Suit up and run wild.
14:29I guess you're not as stupid as you look!
14:31LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
14:33The LEGO games are usually a blast, offering love letters to various IPs in cute, little packages,
14:40with the option of co-op always being welcome.
14:43And LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is no different.
14:52The heroes must stop Loki before he collects all the cosmic bricks.
14:56And to do this, you travel a vast world, completing missions while taking on familiar villains.
15:01The game has a huge roster of 155 playable minifigs,
15:06from the iconic masked heroes, vigilantes, and supervillains,
15:10to more joke characters like Stan Lee himself.
15:13Regardless of who you play as, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes took what could have been an easy cash grab
15:18and made it a great, silly superhero game full of charm and blocks to break.
15:31The Incredible Hulk
15:33The Incredible Hulk
15:33Ultimate Destruction
15:34Collateral damage has never been this much fun.
15:47While the story isn't the main draw to Ultimate Destruction, it's still a classic Hulk tale.
15:52Bruce Banner goes into hiding only to be sought out by a shady government organization,
15:57The Division.
15:58But, more importantly, the game has us playing as the Hulk in an open world that is ours to destroy.
16:03This is where the game shines.
16:05The combat makes you feel godly by letting you run up buildings,
16:09leap around while pushing cars out of the way,
16:11and even taking buses to turn them into boxing gloves.
16:15Ultimate Destruction is the ultimate power trip,
16:17and most of us can't get enough of the mayhem.
16:30Live service games are obviously a big risk,
16:34but with the popularity of the Marvel roster, NetEase had a big leg up.
16:38Even still, it helps that Marvel Rivals is just as addictive
16:42as some of the biggest hero shooters to ever release.
16:51Starting with a huge roster that has been greatly expanded on since its release in 2024,
16:56we've gotten everything from iconic titans to some truly obscure characters.
17:01More than just new characters,
17:03the developers have kept fine-tuning the experience,
17:06adding new team-ups and adjusting each character's abilities,
17:09which has brought endless joy when testing out different team comps.
17:12We hope Marvel Rivals lasts much longer than many of its contemporaries,
17:17and we have a good feeling that it will.
17:27Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
17:29Few video games have portrayed their comic book characters as well as Guardians of the Galaxy.
17:35I can be quite forceful.
17:47Staying true to the now-beloved group of space adventurers,
17:51the developers at Eidos Montreal balanced their excellent team dynamic with an engrossing story.
17:56The Galaxy is threatened once again, and the Guardians plan on saving it,
18:00taking them to a variety of planets in the process whilst wholly embracing 80's flair,
18:04and a soundtrack that's downright mesmerizing.
18:07Although combat seems limited since you only control Star-Lord,
18:11commanding the different tactics of the others adds strategy to the fight,
18:14while playing into his journey of growth into a worthy team leader.
18:18Guardian ship, stay on nowhere.
18:21What?
18:21You can't take our ship.
18:23My ship.
18:24How are we going to find the Hallow's Hope?
18:27Now come, Essences of Time.
18:29Marvel vs. Capcom 2 New Age of Heroes
18:32One of the biggest crossover fighting games to ever exist,
18:36and that fact has truly stood the test of time.
18:46Marvel vs. Capcom 2 takes the heroes and villains of both worlds
18:50and throws them into the ring to duke it out.
18:52Pick your team of three fighters, and the last one standing takes the victory.
18:56Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is often praised for its huge roster,
18:5956 characters of all shapes and sizes,
19:02with more than a few deep-cut choices.
19:04While Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 may have felt a bit more balanced,
19:08the second outing just has that spark that keeps bringing gamers back for another round.
19:24If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.
19:29Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.
19:32Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the dark side of fame
19:35from the writer of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
19:39Boom.
19:40I can make an apology video.
19:42Oh, you so would.
19:42Click on the link in the description to check out the game
19:45and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
19:48Marvel's Spider-Man.
19:50Although Insomniac followed this game up with two spectacular sequels,
19:54the first game remains The Crown Jewel.
20:03Everything in this game felt perfect.
20:06Combat felt like we imagined comic book punches to feel.
20:09Swinging around New York was the best we've ever seen.
20:13And seeing a more mature Peter Parker was a refreshing take.
20:16Playing as a seasoned Spider-Man paired with a thrilling narrative
20:19that reintroduced some of his rogues' gallery in creative ways
20:22was a brilliant choice on Insomniac's part.
20:25But to be honest, we would have just been content to spend a dozen hours
20:28swinging around the city and filling out the epic collection of optional costumes.
20:33They really, really hit the nail on the head with this reinvention of the wall crawler.
20:38You want to be my sidekick?
20:40Like a spider girl?
20:43Spider woman.
20:44No.
20:45No, not a sidekick.
20:47A partner.
20:48What are some of your favorite Marvel games?
20:50Did we leave off one of your favorite hidden gems?
