Myrtle Beach is one of the best seafood destinations on the East Coast, and for good reason. Fresh crab, oysters, and shrimp are pulled straight from the water, thanks to South Carolina's about half a million acres of salt marshes, making it one of the most flavorful shellfish destinations in the country. But with so many restaurants to choose from, finding the best local seafood in Myrtle Beach can be overwhelming. We tried three local favorites : the seafood boil at Big Mike's Soul Food, the rich she-crab soup at Hook & Barrel, and the shrimp and grits at Winna's.

00:00If you've ever visited Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, you already know the obsession with
00:04seafood here is no joke. And it's not just because it's on the beach. It actually is one of the
00:08best
00:09places in the country to get fresh seafood from. Myrtle Beach sits on a coastline that puts
00:13fishermen just minutes from some of the richest waters on the eastern seaboard. The warm currents
00:18and coastal salt marshes create the perfect environment for shrimp, flounder, and of course
00:22crab to thrive. I stopped by three eateries in Myrtle Beach, each serving one dish I was told
00:27I absolutely had to try to fully appreciate what the city's seafood scene is all about.
00:32Shrimp and grits, a seafood boil, and sheet crab soup.
00:38When it comes to the classic southern dish of shrimp and grits, one place is constantly
00:43mentioned for where you should go on Myrtle Beach, and that's Gwinnah's. It's a jumbo
00:47shrimp sautéed in butter, added to a cheesy grit, and then covered in a ham-infused tomato
00:52sauce. They sell out very often. People line up for them. I was in luck. I came by.
00:57They had around one o'clock, and they had one order left. I just got it. Secured it. So I'm
01:01going to give it a taste test and let you know how it is. You should make it all into
01:07a perfect little forkful there. Look at that. Hey, here we go. It is so incredibly good.
01:18Mm-mm-mm. So, so good.
01:24Next, a seafood boil at Big Mike Soul Food with a special appearance from Big Mike himself,
01:28who sat down with me and shared his trick to the perfect bite. Our Big Mike Soul Food
01:33traditional seafood boil. Got a little bit of crab legs in it. We got some shrimp, corn on the cob,
01:40boiled eggs, some sauces, and then we got our garlic butter that we make in-house. Let's do the crab
01:48legs first. Yeah, let's do the crab legs. Let's do the crab legs.
01:53Mmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Make you a little kebab there. Mm-hmm. Dip it back down in there. Oh,
02:01yum. Mm-hmm. That right is a meal right there. Mm-hmm. Look at that. Oh.
02:07Okay, I made my kebab. There you go. Okay. This is the right way to do it? So food kebab,
02:11so. Okay, yeah. Yeah, let's do that. Yeah, you can do that. Okay. There you go. Here we go. Mm
02:20-hmm. Mm-hmm.
02:26For she crab soup, I made my way to hook and barrel, the sustainable seafood restaurant from James Beard semi
02:31-finalist chef Heidi Vukoff. She runs her restaurant, as well as a coffee shop and bakery, all from her own
02:36corner of Myrtle Beach.
02:40Here, it's a low country she crab soup, which is a South Carolina style of Southern cooking. I've never had
02:48this, but I'm really excited. Let's give this a try.
02:54It's, like, light and refreshing while also being creamy and big. Really good.
