00:10and some part of you knows it is mold and ought not to be there.
00:15And your first thought is to grab something and scrub it off and be done in five minutes.
00:20Well, I am going to tell you something today that runs against everything the quick videos promise,
00:27and it may be the most important thing I ever tell you about mold.
00:32Killing the mold you see is the easy part, and very often it is not the answer at all.
00:39For there is a kind of mold that you can wipe off in five minutes and still leave your family
00:44in harm.
00:45And there is a truth about what feeds mold that, once you know it, changes how you fight it forever.
00:52So today I am going to show you how to deal with mold rightly,
00:57the plain cleaners that truly kill it, and, just as important,
01:02when killing it is not enough, and what you must do then.
01:05Let me show you.
01:07Here is the thing to understand first,
01:09for it is the root of the whole matter and it turns your whole fight around.
01:15Mold does not come from nowhere, and it does not grow on nothing.
01:19It needs three things to live.
01:22Moisture, that is damp,
01:24something porous to grow on, like drywall or wood or cloth that holds the damp,
01:30and warmth.
01:31And here is the freeing truth in that.
01:34If you take away even one of those three, the mold cannot grow.
01:39And of the three, the one you can control,
01:42the one that is nearly always the real cause, is the moisture.
01:46So here is what most folk get backward.
01:50They scrub the mold off the wall over and over, and it keeps coming back.
01:55And they think the cleaner is no good,
01:57when the truth is, the damp that fed it is still there,
02:01so of course it grows back.
02:03Killing the mold you see does nothing lasting if you leave the damp that made it.
02:09So the first and most important thing before any cleaner is to find and kill the moisture source,
02:16the leak, the damp, the poor airing that is feeding the mold.
02:21Kill the damp first.
02:23That is the root of it.
02:25Now let me give you the cleaners and then the hard, honest truth.

03:00My grandmother had a saying that fits this exactly,
03:04that you pull the weed by its root,
03:06or you only teach it to grow back stronger.
03:09She meant that fighting the visible part of any trouble
03:13while leaving its root is worse than useless,
03:16for it wearies you and heartens the trouble,
03:19and the only true victory is at the root.
03:22And mold is the very picture of it,
03:24for the mold on the wall is only the weed you see,
03:28and the damp is its root,
03:30and pull the top a hundred times and it grows back while the root lives.
03:34So here is her kind of root pulling given to the mold,
03:39the damp first, then the cleaners,
03:41then the knowing of when it is beyond you.
03:44So, the cleaners that truly kill surface mold,
03:48once you have gone after the damp.
03:50And let me first clear away a thing you have surely heard,
03:54for it is a myth that wastes folks' effort.
03:57Bleach.
03:58Folk think bleach is the great mold killer and reach for it first,
04:02but the plain truth is that bleach does not reliably kill mold,
04:07especially on a porous surface like wood or drywall,
04:11where the mold's roots go down below the surface the bleach cannot reach.
04:15The bleach may lighten the color so the surface looks clean,
04:19while the mold lives on beneath.
04:21So do not trust bleach for your mold,
04:24and, as I always tell you,
04:26never mix it with your vinegar or anything,
04:29for that makes a poison gas.
04:31Set the bleach aside.
04:33Here are three plain things that genuinely kill surface mold,
04:37and you likely have them already.
04:39The first is plain white vinegar.
04:42Vinegar is a mild acid,
04:43and that acid genuinely kills most kinds of mold,
04:47the greater part of the species you will meet.
04:50And the beauty of it for mold is that you use it neat,
04:54not watered down.
04:55Pour the plain vinegar into a spray bottle,
04:58spray the moldy surface well,
05:00and, here is the key,
05:02let it sit a good hour to soak in and reach down and kill.
05:06Do not just wipe it straight off.
05:09Then scrub and wipe it away.
05:11The vinegar, given its time to soak,
05:14kills the mold down into the surface,
05:17not just on top.
05:18Plain vinegar, neat, left to soak.
05:21That is the first.
05:23The second is hydrogen peroxide,
05:26the plain 3% kind from the brown bottle.
05:30Peroxide genuinely kills mold and its spores,
05:33and reaches the roots on a surface.
05:36Spray the 3% peroxide onto the moldy spot.
05:39Let it sit and fizz and work its 10 minutes or so,
05:43and then scrub and wipe clean.
05:46And mind my standing rule,
05:48since we are near the vinegar.
05:50You may use vinegar and peroxide each in its turn,
05:53but never store them mixed together in a closed bottle,
05:57for shut up together they make a harsh corrosive acid.
06:01Each alone in its own bottle is safe.
06:04Peroxide for the mold and its roots,
06:06that is the second.
06:08And the third is borax,
06:10that mineral powder I have shown you a dozen uses for,
06:14which is naturally antimicrobial,
06:16a mold killer.
06:18Mix about a cup of borax into a bit of water,
06:21or into a good amount of water for a spray,
06:24and apply it to the mold,
06:26scrub it in,
06:27and wipe away the mold.
06:28But here is a nice thing about borax for this.
06:31You can leave the borax residue on the surface
06:35without rinsing it fully away,
06:37and being a mold inhibitor,
06:39it helps discourage the mold from returning.
06:42Just mind, as ever,
06:44that borax is an irritant and a poison not to be eaten,
06:47so gloves on and keep it from the children.
06:51Borax, which kills and helps hold the mold off.
06:54That is the third.
06:56So there are your three plain mold killers,
06:59vinegar, peroxide, borax,
07:02any one of which does the job,
07:04and no need for bleach,
07:05nor a dear special product.
07:08Now, before I go on,
07:10one plain safety word on the cleaning itself,
07:13for it matters.
07:14Whenever you clean mold,
07:16wear gloves,
07:17and do not breathe the mold,
07:19for the spores and the dust of it
07:21are not good in your lungs.
07:23Open a window,
07:24and if it is a fair patch,
07:26cover your nose and mouth.
07:28Gloves and no breathing the spores.
07:31But now,
07:32here is the hard, honest truth I promised you,
07:35the thing the quick five-minute videos
07:37will never tell you,
07:39and it is the most important thing in all of this,
07:42so hear me well.
07:44Killing the mold is not the same as removing it,
07:47and for a serious mold,
07:49killing it is not enough
07:50and can even do harm.
07:52When folks speak of black, toxic mold,
07:56they mean a particular bad kind of mold,
07:59and that kind gives off poisons,
08:01what are called mycotoxins,
08:04that can genuinely affect your health.
08:06And here is the thing that changes everything.
08:09Dead mold can harm you just as much as living mold,
08:13for those poisons and those spores
08:16are still there in the dead mold on your wall.
08:19So if you have a real black, toxic mold,
08:22and you spray it and scrub it,
08:24you may be doing your family more harm than good,
08:28for the scrubbing throws the spores and the poisons
08:31up into the air you breathe,
08:32and killing it leaves the poisonous, dead mold
08:35sitting right there.
08:37So for a serious black mold,
08:40killing it is not the answer.
08:41It must be properly removed,
08:44taken away,
08:44not just killed in place.
08:47That is the secret the industry does not put on the label.
08:51You cannot simply scrub a black, toxic mold away safe.
08:55So how do you know which you have,
08:57and when it is beyond you?
08:59Here is the honest measure.
09:01A small patch of ordinary surface mold,
09:04a bit of mildew in the bathroom grout,
09:06a spot on a windowsill,
09:08on a hard surface you can fully clean,
09:11from a damp you can fix,
09:13that you may deal with yourself
09:14with the vinegar or peroxide or borax
09:17and the killing of the damp,
09:19and it is fine.
09:20But when it is more than that,
09:22you want a professional.
09:24And here is when.
09:26If it is a large area,
09:28bigger than a small patch.
09:31If it is that black, slimy, toxic-looking kind.
09:34If it is growing into or behind the walls,
09:39up in the drywall, under the floor,
09:42where you cannot fully reach and remove it.
09:45If it keeps coming back no matter what.
09:48Or if anyone in the house is taking ill,
09:52with breathing trouble or the like,
09:54that could be from the mold.
09:57In any of those,
09:58do not scrub away at it
10:00and stir it into your air.
10:02That wants a proper look
10:04and proper removal
10:06by someone who knows
10:08how to take it out safely
10:09without spreading it through your house.
10:12There is no shame nor failure in that.
10:15A serious mold is a health matter.
10:18And knowing when a thing
10:20is beyond your own hand
10:21is wisdom, not weakness.
10:24The small surface patch
10:26you kill and clean and dry.
10:28The serious or hidden or toxic mold
10:31you have properly removed.
10:34Know the difference,
10:35for it is the difference
10:36that matters most.
10:38Now think a moment
10:39about why we came to believe

11:20Kill the damp,
11:21use cheap vinegar or peroxide
11:24or borax on a small patch,
11:26and get a serious one

11:29So the plain old knowing
11:31that damp is the root
11:33and a bad mold,
11:34a danger to be taken seriously,
11:37got buried under the promise
11:38of a five-minute spray.
11:40My grandmother kept her house dry
11:43and aired and caught the damp
11:45before it ever grew a mold
11:46and knew a bad growth
11:48wanted more than a rag.
11:50And somewhere between her day
11:52and hours we were sold a bottle
11:54and a false five-minute promise.
11:57The mending of it
11:58is the damp killed first,

12:06You find and kill

12:09for without that,
