Black mould on bathroom silicone sealant can be lifted without endless scrubbing, and the fix is simpler than most people expect. This tutorial shows how to treat mould along shower, bathtub, and sink seals by keeping a bleach-soaked paper strip pressed against the silicone overnight so the mould is killed and the black staining can bleach away.

The method is built around patience, not force: roll up kitchen paper or toilet paper, lay it over the mouldy sealant, soak it with plain bleach, and leave it in place for hours. The video also explains the safety basics clearly, including ventilating the room, wearing gloves, and never mixing bleach with vinegar, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners. If you prefer a gentler approach, hydrogen peroxide or a baking soda paste are mentioned as slower alternatives.

It also covers the real reason mould keeps returning in damp bathrooms and why dry, aired sealant matters more than repeated scrubbing. If the silicone is old, cracked, or mould has grown deep inside, replacement may be the better fix.

Created for viewers searching for black mould removal, bathroom cleaning hacks, silicone sealant cleaning, shower mould treatment, and mould removal tutorial ideas. Also useful for anyone looking for practical bathroom cleaning tips, damp bathroom maintenance, and simple home cleaning methods that work while you rest.

00:00There is a black creeping ugliness that shows up in near every bathroom sooner or later,
00:05and it defeats folk utterly. The black mold that grows into the silicone sealant,
00:12that rubbery white strip of caulk around your tub and your shower and your basin.
00:17It goes spotted and streaked and then wholly black, and you scrub at it with a brush till
00:23your arm aches and it will not budge, for it has grown down into the very sealant.
00:28And you begin to think the only cure is to tear the whole strip out and start over.
00:34Well, put the scrub brush down, for I am going to show you how to take that black mold right
00:40out of the sealant and make it white and clean again with no scrubbing at all, only a little
00:46patience overnight. But I will also be straight with you about handling this safe, for the
00:52thing that does it is strong stuff, and about what truly stops the mold from coming back.
00:57Let me show you.
00:59Here is the thing to understand first, for it is the secret to why this works with no scrubbing
01:05when your brush failed. The black mold has grown down into the sealant, so scrubbing the
01:10surface never reaches it. But mold is a living thing, and it can be killed, and the black
01:17stain it leaves can be bleached away if you can hold the thing that kills it against the
01:22mold long enough. The trouble is that a liquid poured on a vertical strip of sealant just
01:28runs straight off and dries in a minute, doing nothing. So the whole trick, the entire secret,
01:34is to keep the killer held wet against the mold for hours and hours. And you do that by soaking
01:40a bit of paper in it and laying that wet paper right over the sealant so it cannot run off
01:46nor
01:46dry out, and leaving it overnight. Held wet against the mold all night, it kills the mold
01:52and bleaches the black clean away. And in the morning you peel the paper off and the sealant
01:58is white again, no scrubbing ever. That is the whole method. Now let me give you the way
02:03of it and the safety it wants. Quick word before we go further. My name is Esther Yoder, and
02:10the old household ways handed down to me, the kind I am sharing today, and a great many more
02:16besides, are far more than I could ever fit into one video. I have gathered the whole of
02:21them into a book, and you will find it at EliasYoder.com. If today's tips serve you, that is where
02:28the rest of what my mother and grandmother taught me lives, all in the one place.
02:33Now to the mold. My grandmother had a saying that fits this exactly, that patience does
02:39the work that force cannot, and does it while you rest. She meant that so many of the jobs
02:44we wear ourselves out fighting will simply yield if we set the right thing to work on them,
02:50and walk away and let time do the labor. And this black mold is the very picture of it,
02:56for no amount of scrubbing shifts it, but a wet paper left on it overnight lifts it clean
03:01while you sleep. So here is her kind of way, the patient one, and the plain safety it asks.
03:08Now the thing that does this job best and fastest is plain household bleach, and I am going to
03:14give you the method with it, but first before one word of how, the safety, for bleach is strong
03:20stuff and wants respecting, and I will not have a soul hurt over a moldy bathroom. So heed
03:26these three plain rules, every one, before you begin. The first and the most important,
03:32the rule I give in near every video and never more so than now, never, ever mix bleach with
03:38anything. Not with vinegar, not with any acid, not with ammonia, not with another cleaner
03:44of any kind. For bleach crossed with vinegar or acid, or bleach crossed with ammonia, makes
03:51a poison gas that has truly harmed and even killed folk. So when you do this job, use the
03:57bleach alone, plain, and if you have lately cleaned that bathroom with vinegar or another
04:01cleaner, rinse it all away well and let it dry and air before you bring the bleach near.
04:07Bleach by itself and nothing else. That is the rule you must not break. The second rule, wear
04:14rubber gloves, for bleach is harsh on the skin and will redden and burn it, and you will be
04:19handling the wet paper with your fingers to press it down. So gloves on, always, and keep it off your
04:26skin. And the third rule, open a window and air the room well, keep it good and ventilated the whole
04:32time, for the fumes of bleach are strong and bad to breathe, especially shut up in a small bathroom.
04:39Window open, air moving, gloves on, and bleach alone. Keep those three, and you may do this job in safety.
04:48Now the method. You take some kitchen paper, the strong paper towel, or if you have none, plain toilet paper
04:55does just as well, and you tear off a good length of it and twist and roll it up into
05:01a long, thin rope
05:03or bead, long enough to run along the strip of moldy sealant you mean to treat.
05:08Now lay that paper rope right along the moldy silicone, pressing it against the strip. And then, with your gloves
05:16on,
05:17pour or spoon the plain bleach over the paper rope, wetting it through and through, soaking it good and saturated,
05:24so it lies there wet and heavy against the sealant. And here is the particular care that makes it work.
05:31With your gloved finger, press that wet paper down onto the sealant all along its length, so that it is
05:39in close contact
05:40with every bit of the mold. And see that none of the black mold is left showing, that it is
05:46all covered over and pressed against
05:48by the wet bleached paper. For any bit left uncovered will not be reached. Cover it all, press it close,
05:55so the wet paper seals the mold away under it. What you have done is lay the bleach right against
06:02the mold and keep it there.
06:03Wet, held close, unable to run off or dry. And now the easiest step of all, my grandmother's step.
06:11You leave it and you walk away and you let it work all night. A good full day is best,
06:16a whole 24 hours.
06:18But overnight at the least, while you sleep and go about your day, that bleach held wet against the mold
06:24kills it
06:24and bleaches the black stain clean out of the sealant, slowly, thoroughly, doing hour after hour the work no scrubbing
06:33could do.
06:34You need not touch it nor tend it, the patience does it all. Just leave that window cracked for the
06:39air.
06:39Then, come the next day, you peel the paper away and here is the reward. The sealant that was black
06:46and spotted and ugly is white and clean again,
06:50as if it were new laid and you never scrubbed once. Peel off the paper, rinse the sealant down well
06:57with clean water to wash away the bleach and let it dry.
07:00And stand back and look at your white clean sealant. And if a stubborn bit of black remains in a
07:06corner, no matter, do not scrub it.
07:08Simply lay a fresh bit of bleached paper on that spot and leave it another day. And the second treatment
07:15takes the last of it.
07:16Patience and a second go, never the brush. Now, some of you will not want bleach in the house at
07:22all and I understand it.
07:24So let me give you the gentler ways honestly, though I will tell you plain they work slower and less
07:29completely than the bleach on a bad black mold.
07:33Hydrogen peroxide, that milder bleach from the brown bottle I have told you of, used the very same way, soaked
07:39into paper and laid on the mold overnight,
07:42will lift the mold and the stain more gently, and it is kinder stuff to handle, though it may want
07:48repeating on a bad patch.
07:49Or a thick paste of baking soda and a little water, spread over the mold and left, then wiped away,
07:56will help lift it, gentler still.
07:58So you have your choice, the bleach for the fastest, most complete job on a bad black mold, handled with
08:04the care I gave you,
08:05or the peroxide or the soda paste for a gentler hand, with more patience and perhaps more than one go.
08:11Any of the three, laid on and left, beats the scrub brush. Now here is an honest word I owe
08:17you, the kind I always give,
08:19about keeping that mold gone, for it does you little good to bleach it white today if it is black
08:24again in a month.
08:25Understand what breeds this mold, damp. Mold grows where it is wet and shut up and airless,
08:31and a bathroom with its steam and its splashing and often its poor airing is a paradise for it.
08:39Worst of all, in a hard water area, like many of you have. So the bleach removes the mold you
08:46have,
08:46but the true cure, the thing that stops it coming back, is to keep that sealant dry and aired.
08:53Wipe down your shower and tub, and the sealant, after you bathe, so the water is not left sitting on
09:00it.
09:00Run a fan if you have one, or throw the window open after a bath, to let the steam and
09:06the damp out,
09:07and the air move and dry the room. Fix anything that stays wet or drips. Keep the bathroom dry and
09:15aired,
09:16and the mold has no home to grow in, and your bleached white sealant stays white far, far longer.
09:23Treat the mold with the bleach. Prevent the next with dryness and air.
09:29And one more honest word about the limits of this, so you know when bleaching is not enough.
09:36This method takes the mold and the black stain out of the surface of the sealant beautifully.
09:42But sometimes the mold has grown deep down, behind or under the silicone,
09:48or the sealant itself is old and cracked and failing and gone black clear through.
09:54And then no bleaching will truly fix it, for the trouble is down inside.
10:00In that case, the honest answer is that the old silicone wants stripping out,
10:05and the joint cleaned and dried and fresh sealant laid in,
10:10which is a job you can do yourself with a little learning or have done.
10:15And if you find the damp goes deeper, a real wet trouble behind the wall or a leak,
10:21that wants a proper look.
10:23For mold is sometimes the sign of a wet that wants mending at its source.
10:28So, bleach the surface mold and it comes up lovely,
10:33but failing old sealant wants replacing, and a deep damp wants finding and fixing.
10:40Know the difference and you will not waste bleach on a thing that wants a real repair.
10:46Now think a moment about why we came to believe a moldy bathroom
10:51wants either an arm-aching scrub with a special mold spray or a costly resealing,
10:57when a bit of bleached paper left on overnight lifts the blackout clean for pennies while we sleep.
11:05It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it.
11:10There is money in selling special mold sprays and in the handyman's resealing,
11:15and none at all in teaching you that the killer held wet against the mold overnight
11:21does the whole job for the cost of a little bleach and a scrap of paper.
11:26So, the plain old knowing that patience and the right thing held in place
11:32beats force and a costly bottle just stopped being handed down,
11:37because no one profits by your fixing it yourself for pennies.
11:42My grandmother kept every corner of her house clean,
11:46with plain things and the patience to let them work.
11:50And somewhere between her day and ours, we were taught that a stubborn stain wants a special product and a
11:57hard scrubbing arm.
11:59The mending of it is a scrap of paper, a little bleach, and a night's patience, handled safe.
12:06You air the room and glove your hands and keep the bleach well away from any other cleaner.
12:13You twist your paper into a rope, lay it on the moldy sealant, soak it with plain bleach, and press
12:20it close so all the mold is covered.
12:23You leave it overnight, or a full day, and peel it off to find the sealant white and clean, no
12:31scrubbing.
12:32You rinse it and let it dry, and treat any stubborn bit a second time.
12:37And then you keep it gone by keeping the bathroom dry and aired.
12:41And you know that failing old sealant wants replacing rather than bleaching.
12:48And your bathroom is white and clean and fresh for the cost of almost nothing.
12:54That is how it comes home, one bleached strip, one night's patience at a time.
13:00The keeping of your own house back in your own hands.
13:05So here is what I would ask of you.
13:08This week, take that black moldy strip of sealant you have given up scrubbing and lay the bleached paper on
13:14it overnight the safe way I showed you.
13:16And then come back and tell me in the comments how white it came up.
13:20For I do love to hear of a dreaded ugly job made easy by a bit of patience.
13:24And tell me too, while you are there, your county and the age of your house.
13:29For the hard water areas and the damp climates breed this mold the worst.
13:32And the old houses have the older bathrooms where it troubles folk most.
13:37And I learn from every one of you how it goes where you live.
13:40And if your own mother or grandmother had a way of keeping a damp room sweet and mold free that
13:45I have not named here.
13:46Tell me that most of all.
13:48For that is how this goes.
13:50We share what we were given.
13:51I read every comment and I learn from you the way the old women learned from one another across the
13:57fence line.
13:58One house and one season at a time.
14:00Next time I will show you the old ways of keeping a whole bathroom dry and sweet and free of
14:06the damp that breeds the mold in the first place.
14:08The airing and the wiping and the small habits that mean you scarcely ever have to fight the black mold
14:13at all.
14:14For the best mold is the one that never gets a home to grow in.
14:18There is a right and an old way to keep a damp room that runs on air and dryness and
14:23a little care rather than a shelf of harsh sprays.
14:26But this week, you start with the strip you have.
14:29You air the room and glove your hands.
14:31You lay your bleach soaked paper on the moldy sealant and press it close and leave it overnight.
14:36And you peel it off to find it white and clean with never a scrub.
14:40And you keep your bleach well away from all else the whole time.
14:44And then you keep the room dry and aired so it stays white.
14:47And you will understand, as my grandmother did, that patience does the work that force cannot and does it while
14:54you rest.
14:54That black mold grown into sealant is not scrubbed out but killed and bleached out by the right thing held
15:01wet against it overnight.
15:03And that the ugly job you dreaded and gave up on was only ever waiting for you to stop scrubbing
15:08and let a little patience do the work.
15:11The household kept the plain old way is the one that remembers how the old women lifted the worst stains
15:16with the right thing.
15:17A little patience.
15:18And the sense to keep a room dry.
15:20And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
