00:00Go and look in the corner of your bathroom where the wall meets the ceiling, up above
00:04the tub or along the window frame in the back bedroom or behind the wardrobe you never move.
00:11Look close, that dark speckled bloom creeping across the plaster, black and green and spreading
00:18a little further each month, that is mould and most folks either scrub it with bleach
00:23until their eyes water and it comes back within the fortnight or they leave it be and try
00:29not to look at it.
00:30And here is the thing that will change how you see it entirely.
00:34Mould is not a dirt problem, it is a damp problem.
00:38You cannot beat it by scrubbing alone and once you understand that you can be rid of it for
00:43good with two cheap things and a few small changes to how you keep your house.
00:49Let me show you the whole of it.
00:51Here is the thing to understand first and everything follows from it.
00:55Mould is a living thing and like any living thing, it needs food and water.
01:01The food it will always have for it eats the dust and the paper and the plaster and the
01:07wood of your very house and you cannot take that away.
01:11But the water you can.
01:13Mould lives where the damp sits still, where warm, wet air meets a cold surface and turns
01:20to water on it, in the room with no air moving and the window never opened.
01:25That is why it is always the bathroom corner, the north wall, the back of the wardrobe, the
01:32window frame.
01:33So you may kill every speck on that wall today.
01:36But if the damp is still there, it will be back by next month as surely as sunrise.
01:42Kill the mould and dry the place both together and it does not come back.
01:48Everything I am about to give you is one or the other of those two.
01:52Quick word before we go further.

02:20Now to the mould.
02:22And why does it matter so much?
02:24Because mould is not merely ugly.
02:27That black bloom is throwing off fine spores into the very air of your house and you and
02:33your children are breathing them all day and all night.
02:36They set folks to sneezing and coughing, they trouble those with weak chests and allergies
02:42and they are hardest on the little ones and the old folk in the house.
02:47And beyond your health, the mould is eating your house, feeding on the plaster and the wood
02:52and it puts that musty smell through everything, into the towels and the clothes in the wardrobe,
02:58a smell that never quite washes out.
03:01So it is worth doing properly.
03:02My grandmother had a word for damp in a house and it was not a kind one.
03:07She used to say that a house wants to breathe the same as a body does and a house that
03:12cannot
03:13breathe grows sick, just as a person shut up in a close room grows sick.
03:17She threw the windows wide every single morning of the year, in January as much as in June,
03:24and she pulled the furniture off the walls when she swept behind it and she would not have
03:28dreamt of hanging wet washing indoors when there was a line and a wind outside.
03:33And that is why I never once saw mould in her house.
03:37She was not fighting it.
03:39She never gave it a place to start.
03:41So before ever we come to the killing of it, let me give you her three habits.
03:46For these are the true cure and they cost nothing at all.
03:50The first is this, stop drying your washing indoors.
03:54I know it is convenient and I know in a wet season it is hard to do otherwise, but understand
04:00what is happening when you do it.
04:02Every drop of water in that wet washing has to go somewhere and it goes into the air of
04:07your house, pounds of it out of a single load, and then it settles on your cold walls and
04:13windows and feeds the mould.
04:15If you have a line and a bit of weather, hang it outside always.
04:19There is nothing sweeter than line dried linen anyway.
04:22And if you truly must dry indoors, then do it in one room with the window cracked open
04:28so all that wet air can get out of the house, rather than settle in it.
04:33The second is to pull your furniture off the walls, even a couple of inches.
04:39When a wardrobe or a couch or a bed sits flat against an outside wall, no air can move behind
04:45it and that wall stays cold and the air behind it stays still and damp.
04:50And that is precisely where mold sets up house, hidden away where you will not see it until
04:55you move the thing years later and find the back of it black.
04:59Give every piece a few inches of breathing room off the wall and let the air run behind
05:05it.
05:07And the third is to air the house daily.
05:10Open your windows for a quarter of an hour every day, even in the winter, especially in
05:16the winter, and let the wet stale air out and the dry air in.
05:20It seems wrong to open a window in the cold, but the cold outside air is far drier than
05:27your warm indoor air, and once it comes in and warms, it will drink up your damp.
05:33A quarter hour a day drops the damp in a house remarkably, and above all, do it after a bath
05:39or after cooking, when the room is full of steam.
05:43Open the window and let that steam out of doors, instead of letting it settle on your walls.
05:49Those three habits, done faithfully, will do more against mold than any bottle ever sold.
05:55But now to the mold that is already there, for we must kill what has taken hold, and here
06:01is the way, made of two plain things.
06:04You will want white vinegar, the ordinary kind you cook with, and tea tree oil, and hot water.
06:11Take about a cup of hot water in a jug, and stir into it a teaspoon of tea tree oil.
06:17Tea tree oil is a strong, natural antifungal.
06:21It does not merely wipe the mold off the surface, it kills it, and it holds off the regrowth
06:26in a damp spot, and it takes away that musty smell besides.
06:31Then add about half a cup of white vinegar to it.
06:34And vinegar is the workhorse here, for its acidity kills mold, and more than that, vinegar
06:40soaks down into a porous surface, like plaster or grout, where the mold has its roots, which
06:46is a thing that bleach does not do.
06:48Bleach mostly lightens the surface, and leaves the roots below to come again.
06:53Stir it all together, and pour it into a spray bottle, and there is your mold killer, made
06:58for pennies.
06:58Now, before you spray a thing, take these precautions, for disturbing mold puts its spores
07:04into the air, and you do not want to be breathing them.
07:08Open the window in that room.
07:10Wear a mask over your nose and mouth.
07:12A plain dust mask will do.
07:14Wear gloves.
07:15And if the little children are about, put them in another room while you work.
07:20Take that much care, and this is a safe job.
07:23Then spray your mixture right onto the moldy area, and cover it well.
07:28Wet it thoroughly.
07:29Do not be stingy.
07:31And now comes the part that everyone gets wrong, so heat it.
07:35Leave it alone.
07:36Do not wipe it straight off.
07:38Let it sit and work a good fifteen minutes at the least, and longer does no harm at all,
07:43for it is the sitting and soaking that lets the vinegar and the tea tree oil get down into
07:49the surface and kill the mold at its root.
07:52Wipe it off in the first minute, and you have only smeared it about.
07:55Give it its fifteen minutes.
07:58After that, take a dry cloth and wipe the whole area clean, and you will see the difference
08:03plainly, the black lifting away and the wall coming clean under your hand.
08:08Use a cloth or paper you can throw away, or wash it hot afterward, so you are not carrying
08:14the spores about the house.
08:16And here is where I will be straight with you rather than promise you a miracle.
08:20On a hard surface like tile or glass or paint in good condition, it will come away beautifully.
08:26But on a porous thing, on plaster or old grout or bare wood, mold sends its roots down in,
08:33and it stains.
08:33So you may find that after your wipe, there is a shadow of the stain still there, even
08:39though the mold itself is dead.
08:41In that case, spray it again and let it sit again, and a second or third going over will
08:47lift most of what remains.
08:48Stubborn spots want repeating.
08:50That is not a failure of the method.
08:53That is simply how a porous wall is.
08:56And one plain rule of safety I give with any acid, and it matters here above all because
09:02folks reach for bleach when they see mold.
09:05Never mix vinegar with bleach, and do not use this spray on a surface you have just bleached.
09:11The two together make a harmful gas.
09:14Use the vinegar and tea tree on its own, with plain water and nothing else, and you are
09:20perfectly safe.
09:22Now, once you have your wall clean, you want to keep the damp down in those corners, so
09:28it does not come straight back.
09:30And here is a cheap old trick for that.
09:33Plain table salt, or rice, will draw moisture out of the air.
09:37You set out a bowl of either in the damp places, the bathroom, the closet, the corner
09:43where the air never moves, and it will take up moisture from the air, and you replace it
09:48every few weeks when it has gone clumped and damp.
09:51It will not do the work of a machine.
09:53I will not tell you it will.
09:55But in a small, closed space like a wardrobe or a little bathroom, it does help, and it
10:01costs you next to nothing.
10:03And now the honest word I owe you, the thing that matters most of all.
10:08Everything I have told you is for the mold you can see on a hard surface.
10:12A patch on the bathroom wall, the window frame, the grout, the corner behind the wardrobe.
10:18That is housekeeping, and you can do it yourself in an afternoon.
10:22But if the mold covers a great spread of your wall, or if it keeps coming back in the very
10:27same place, no matter how faithfully you clean and air, or if it has come after a leak or a
10:33flood,
10:34then you are not looking at a cleaning job at all.
10:37You are looking at water getting into your house from somewhere.
10:40A leaking pipe, a bad roof, a wall with no damp course, and no spray bottle on this earth will
10:47fix that.
10:48For the water is coming in behind the wall faster than you can wipe the front of it.
10:52In that case, find and mend the source of the water.
10:56And if it is a large spread, or if anyone in your house has bad lungs or a weak chest,
11:01get someone who knows building work to look at it properly.
11:04There is no shame in that.
11:06It is knowing which trouble you have.
11:08Mend it at the right end.
11:10Now think a moment about why we were never taught the simple of this.
11:14Why the first thought at a black patch is a costly bottle of something harsh,
11:19or a man with a van and a bill.
11:21It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it.
11:25There is money in a special mold spray bought again every season,
11:29and a great deal more in a call out.
11:31And there is none at all in teaching you that a cup of vinegar and a spoonful of oil kills
11:36it,
11:36and that opening your windows a quarter hour a day keeps it from ever coming.
11:41So the old knowing that a house wants to breathe,
11:44that our grandmothers had by instinct, just stopped being handed down,
11:48because no one profits by the telling.
11:51My grandmother's house never had a speck of mold in it,
11:54and she never bought a thing to keep it so.
11:56The mending of it is a spray bottle and three habits.
12:00You mix your vinegar and tea tree oil.
12:02You spray the mold and let it sit its fifteen minutes and wipe it away.
12:06And you go again on the stubborn places.
12:09And then you keep it gone by drying your washing outside,
12:13pulling your furniture off the walls, and airing your house every day.
12:16And your walls stay clean, and your house smells sweet, for pennies.
12:22And you never buy a bottle of anything.
12:24That is how it comes home.
12:26One sprayed corner, one opened window at a time.
12:30The keeping of your own house back in your own hands.
12:33So here is what I would ask of you.
12:36This week, mix up a bottle and take it to your worst corner,
12:39and then come back and tell me in the comments how it came away,
12:43and whether you have started throwing your windows open of a morning,
12:46for I am always glad to hear a damp house come right.
12:49And tell me too, while you are there, your county and the age of your house,
12:54for the old houses have the solid, cold walls,
12:58and the poor ventilation where the damp gathers so,
13:02and the climates differ so much in how wet the air runs.
13:06And I learn from every one of you how it goes where you live.
13:09And if your own mother or grandmother had a way with damp and mold
13:14that I have not named here, tell me that most of all.
13:17For that is how this goes.
13:19We share what we were given.
13:21I read every comment, and I learn from you the way the old women
13:25learned from one another across the fence line,
13:28one house and one season at a time.
13:31Next time, I will show you the old ways to keep a house warm and dry
13:35through the winter without a great heating bill,
13:38for the warmth and the damp are bound together.
13:41And a house kept rightly warm is a house that stays dry and sweet.
13:46There is a right and an old way to keep a home
13:49that runs on a few cheap things and a little knowing.
13:52But this week, you start with the one corner.
13:54You mix your vinegar and your tea tree oil.
13:57You spray it well and let it sit and wipe it clean.
14:00And then you open your windows every morning and pull your furniture off the walls
14:05and hang your washing in the wind.
14:07And you will understand, as my grandmother did in her own bright, dry house,
14:12that mold was never a dirt you had to scrub away,
14:16but a damp you had to let out.
14:17And that a house, like a body, wants above all to breathe.
14:21The home kept the plain old way is the one that remembers
14:25how the old women kept every wall sweet and dry
14:28with an open window and a jug of vinegar.
14:31And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
