00:24How does it feel?
00:25I mean, the countdown is on. I'm so excited.
00:27I've been waiting for this, so I'm very thrilled.
00:30And it's not just one album. It is a double album.
00:34Two albums.
00:36I always knew I wanted to do One Day was a double album, and if not now, then when, really?
00:41And I was kind of divided in these two different flavors of what I wanted to do musically,
00:45and the solution was sort of just, why not do both at the same time?
00:50So Day and Night was born.
00:51Por que no los dos?
00:54Yeah, exactly.
00:55So, you've launched this era.
00:58Why did you choose On Wires as the debut single?
01:07I was really excited about how surprising it would be.
01:12I hadn't really done anything quite like On Wires before, and I think, you know, as a musician
01:18who's been in this for a while now, that's so exciting to land on, like, a new genre, to
01:24play with it maybe you haven't dabbled in before, and to figure out how to make it your own.
01:28And On Wires was a song that I wrote with Nate Seifert and Kyle Shearer, and even the
01:33night we wrote it, I think we all felt like we had something special.
01:35So, yeah, I just went with my gut, really.
01:38It was as simple as that.
01:40Yeah, there's a lot of special sounds on this album.

01:44Yeah, that was...
01:45Let's talk about her.
01:47She's very ABBA-inspired.
01:48Don't leave me on the dance floor.
01:51Again, another example of somebody I've been working with for a really long time, CJ Barron
01:55and I have known each other for over a decade and change, and working with him is always
02:00really easy.
02:02Like, we get in the room and sort of dance the song into fruition, and I always think
02:06that's like a really playful space to be in, so I come back for more with every album I
02:10want to work with him.
02:11And I had just been to London to see ABBA Voyage.
02:14I had been in Sweden, so ABBA was like on the brain.
02:17And I was in a phase of really wanting to honor them and kind of add my own twist to
02:22something sort of ABBA-esque, and so Don't Leave Me on the Dance Floor was born.
02:26Love it.
02:27I think ABBA's been on everyone's brains more lately.
02:29Right?
02:30Yeah, and I think to that point, we're all just wanting to be outside more in the club
02:34lately, and there's some songs on here that I think I might be hearing.
02:39In the club?
02:40Yeah.
02:40In the club.
02:41Absolutely.
02:41I love that.
02:42I like, the hilarity of that is, I am so not a club girl.
02:48Like, I go to the club and I do not know what to do with my body or who to
02:51talk to or where
02:52to find it, and I want to be.
02:53So in my imagination, though, that is not the case.
02:56I like let loose, and I think that this is really born from my imagination, because when
03:01I listen to music, when I digest it, and even how I experience it, there's often a little
03:05bit more in my own world by myself, and then I'm transported through that.
03:12And so this is sort of how Knight was born.
03:13But I want to see you in the club, and I want to be like a fly on the wall
03:17of that, so I
03:17can be like, all right, I'm living vicariously through her.
03:20No, I want to see you in the club.
03:21Okay, let's go to the club together.

03:26In real life, not just in fantasy.
03:28Love it.
03:28So this is Club Carly, essentially.
03:31I guess.
03:33I mean, is she allowed to wear her pajamas?

03:37I think in some sense, the club is wherever you are.
03:40You bring it with you, and you just said like, oh, you're in the real club.
03:43You don't know what to do.
03:45But what I've learned is no one's paying attention to you in the club.

03:56I think you're right, though.
03:58I do love like an adventure.
04:00And what I mean by that is when I'm hanging out with friends and we are traveling together
04:04and like the night bleeds into the day and we're like, okay, now we're going here.
04:08Now we're going there.
04:08And I live for that, to be honest.
04:10But I'm not like, I'm not doing that every night of the week.
04:13Yeah.
04:13Like mama needs to sleep.
04:15So, yeah.
04:16Of course.
04:16Now, especially.
04:17Yes.
04:17As mama.
04:18Because I am a mother.
04:18Yes.
04:19Five month old.
04:20Crazy.
04:20People might have said you were a mother before to your fans, but now you're a mother to
04:24an actual child.
04:25Legitimate mother.
04:26Yeah.
04:26And you join a whole slate of iconic pop stars like Beyonce who have made videos with
04:34the belly out.
04:35I let it live.
04:36Yeah.
04:37You know, I mean, that was not on the cards for me originally.
04:41It's just, that's the way the cookie crumbled.
04:44I was pregnant when we were ready to shoot this video.
04:46And I was like, well, let's do it.
04:48And actually with After All specifically.
04:57I was nine months pregnant and I cannot believe that we got to like actually have that documented
05:04because I didn't do like a pregnancy shoot.
05:06So now that will forever be me being like, my boobies in there.
05:09It's so, it's so beautiful to me.
05:10Wait, that's so special too, because in a sense the fans are intertwined that way because
05:15you even hosted a listening party where fans came to the set of where you shot to the music
05:21videos.
05:21Exactly.
05:22Yeah.
05:22It's actually been, my husband actually commented on this.
05:26He's like, this is the most I've ever seen you kind of like really kind of let people in to
05:30like life
05:32as it's happening.
05:32And I think it's probably because I'm in a fairly happy place.
05:35It feels safe to share.
05:37I, yeah, I would say that's the reason.
05:40Yeah.
05:40So now that fans are being let in more than ever before, and to be fair to your credit,
05:46you've always let them in, I think more than other pop stars with all these rollouts you're
05:50giving behind the scenes immediately after, like you're having them show up in mass to
05:55a set, like what can they expect for the rest of this album experience?
06:01Oh, I think that, I think that honestly, it does feel like we're, we're going to get
06:07ready to celebrate together.
06:08Like next year, I definitely have in mind that I want to come and do this thing live.
06:12So it's all the prep for that.
06:14And I mean, without giving away too much, I definitely want to like go to all the places
06:19and celebrate this, this whole album properly.
06:22And if you come to one of our shows, it is a feeling where like, it isn't just about me.
06:27It's sort of like the room takes over and I'm just like a part of it.
06:30And that's the energy.
06:31That's my kind of club that I want to go to.
06:33I want to go to that club.
06:35We're going to Club Carly guys.

06:36So you mentioned ABBA as an influence, but you also said there's some darker ones too.
06:41Can you give me a feel for all the influences here?
06:45Who were you most inspired by?
06:47I mean, when I go to really darker places, I think thematically, I kind of want to land
06:54in some heartbreak.
06:55So I would like to thank all of my exes for that.
06:58Nier Afar, shout out for that.
07:00No, I think that actually Nier Afar is a great example of a song where it does get a little
07:04weirder and wilder.
07:06And I wanted it to feel less like a story.
07:10I think sometimes there's a good old fashioned skill to being like, we're going to write a
07:13song today.
07:13It's going to have a beginning, middle and end.
07:15Or the song's about falling in love.
07:17And that's always fun to do.
07:18But it's really also fun to leave the listener and being like, what was that about?
07:22I felt some things and I don't fully understand.
07:24And then as the listener, you got to kind of like, land it in your own life, how it fits
07:29for you.
07:29And that is something that was really exciting to me with this project.
07:32I don't think everyone talks about leaving room for interpretation for the listener.
07:37Yeah, I think even as the writer, there's room for that.
07:40When there's like a thing of like, almost like freeform writing when you're getting in
07:43and almost like a poem, just like seeing what inspires and almost being surprised by the
07:47words that come to you.
07:48I think sometimes halfway through writing a song, I'm like, oh, I think I'm writing about this.
07:53Yes. And feelings are a little like hard to catch sometimes.
07:55So when you're like, try to like analyze them to death, it's kind of like lost on you.
07:59Whereas I think sometimes just trusting yourself, trusting that you're going to get to it,
08:03almost like journaling.
08:04And then the next day being like, I didn't even know I was thinking about that still.
08:07I sort of feel like there's aspects of this album that are like that for me.
08:11Yeah. You ever look back in your journal?
08:13Horrible idea.
08:14It's like you blacked out at that time.
08:16Oh my gosh.
08:17Especially from like years ago.
08:19It's just like, who was she and why was she so dramatic?
08:22Yeah.
08:23Yeah. No, definitely.
08:24Well, she got through it.
08:25Yeah. We're here today. We're here to sing the songs about it.
08:28And with all the feelings that you already experienced, you, as a mommy, you were carrying,
08:35you were growing a whole child within you during this.
08:38Wild.
08:39How do you think that affected your creative process?
08:42Well, actually, like a large part of this album was written over the course of more like
08:46meeting my husband.
08:48I mean, I had met him, but we were falling in love in a more serious way.
08:51We were taking some holidays together.
08:53There's like a lot of like references of like Versailles and Amalfi Coast.
08:56Like we were traveling around Europe together.
08:57And then the idea of a baby sort of, you know, was more like a fantastical idea.
09:04It wasn't like a for sure thing.
09:05It was actually around like nearing the end that we both kind of got excited about it
09:11for real.
09:11And we had talked for years, like years before this.
09:15So, and we kind of knew the album was wrapping up.
09:17So it became its own little deadline in a weird way.
09:19I was just like, okay, we're pregnant now.
09:21We got to get these songs mixed.
09:22So I would be calling like my mixers and engineers and producers and being like, so like, I do
09:28give birth in a week.
09:29So we need to like get this mix wrapped up.
09:32Yeah, no, and to be honest with you, I think there were like four songs that didn't make
09:37the cut for being mixed in time when my baby arrived.
09:39And then they would send the mix back.
09:40So I'm like, it's fine.
09:41It's great.
09:43Where I was like way less like detailed and scared and like figuring it all out.
09:47I think that is the gift of motherhood is you like really learn to not sweat the small
09:51stuff so much.
09:52And, you know, a tambourine, as much as I can be crazy about how high it is in the mix
09:56was, was really like, this is great.
09:58That's like, I was just so joyful.
10:00I was ready to approve anything.
10:03So to that point, it's so interesting because you just celebrated last year, the 10 year
10:07anniversary of emotion.
10:08Holy.
10:10Oh my goodness.
10:1110 years.
10:12That's crazy.
10:12So now 11 years, roughly.
10:16Wild, wild how time is flying.
10:18But yeah, no.
10:19And that was such a fun night to celebrate.
10:21I remember it specifically because actually I was four months pregnant at that show and
10:25I hadn't told anyone yet.
10:26So I was like high heels and rocking it.
10:28But it was really, really fun to, I don't know, just do like the full run of the album.
10:33We hadn't done that in a long time.
10:35It's mostly like we kind of play the hits off the album and move on.
10:39But we were like, oh, we're going to like get into it tonight.
10:42And it was also kind of like sad night because it was my last show with my keyboard player
10:48and piano player, saxophone player, Jared Minerica, who had been with us since like
10:51before Call Me Maybe.
10:52So it was like his last hurrah.
10:54But it was sort of a beautiful way to wrap up and say goodbye to.
10:57Wow.
10:58Yeah.
10:59Yeah.
10:59Crazy.
11:00How did you feel when you hit that decade?
11:02Like how far ahead did you start planning that anniversary celebration?
11:05I think that we really wanted to like as a team, like honor it and, you know, not necessarily
11:11because I was so like excited about day and night.
11:14I think if I was uninspired and not sure what I was doing, I might have like leaned into it
11:19more.
11:19But I wanted to like be romantic and sweet about emotion, honor a bit of nostalgia, but
11:24not like live in it because I was already like on one with this next project.
11:28So it felt like the right touch.
11:30It was so fun to go back to the Troubadour where we originally like kind of debuted emotion
11:35and just remember the feelings that we had being in that space.
11:38But there was so much passion that night.
11:41Like I just, I came out and I felt kind of euphoric.
11:45The whole room was alive and electric and it felt kind of wild to me because I do remember
11:50the first time I performed emotion for anyone thinking no one will know what I'm doing.
11:55This is so unexpected and maybe they won't get it.
11:58And that's okay.
11:59Like it's for me.
12:00And so the idea that it's like had a life of its own beyond that is sort of, you know,
12:04kind of crazy actually.
12:06Oh yeah.
12:06We received that album.
12:07Trust.
12:08You know.
12:09No.
12:10And that's, that's just, that's so cool.
12:13Yeah.
12:13What I liked about emotion that I wanted to repeat with this project was its cohesiveness.
12:18Like it was very like focused in what its job was.
12:21We're doing 80s passionate pop music.
12:23Like we are going to get to some feelings here and not be afraid to go there.
12:28And I think I was noticing like the temperature of the time was like a lot of people being
12:32like too cool for like stuff.
12:34And I missed the 80s for the fact of like, let it rain.
12:37Yes.
12:38Let me feel it.
12:39I'm ready.
12:40And so emotion was very much, you know, my take on what it was that I loved about pop music.
12:54And what I wanted to do here was not necessarily like genre specific in terms of like 80s,
12:5890s.
12:59It was more just that I wanted a cohesive album that felt like it was really building a world.
13:04And that's why day needed to be separated from night.
13:06Because together I was very confused.
13:08But separated, I felt like I understood what I was making.
13:12When you were building the universe of day and night, were you already thinking about
13:17the visuals for this experience, knowing this is so music video heavy already?
13:21Oh, I had like little ideas.
13:24I had certain visuals.
13:25It was like with After All, I pictured like this, you know, this like window and like a
13:30curtain that was blowing.
13:31That was sort of as far as I got with it.
13:33And then the peach came to mind in terms of like the memento that goes along with that.
13:42To be honest, credit needs to be given where it's due.
13:44Like my creative team is insane this round.
13:47Humberto and Joao.
13:48Humberto, I met and he and I like hit it off.
13:52We met in Los Angeles at all times, classical LA joint, and just started talking about the
13:58world of music that I was creating.
14:00He liked kind of the stories behind the songs and encouraged that I sort of leave him a voice
14:05note with what each song was about.
14:07So imagine that.
14:08The poor man received 24 voice notes where I'm like, all right, now we're going to get
14:12into just Little Walk on the Moon.
14:14And I would be like, here's where I was.
14:15I was in the Philippines.
14:16This is what was happening.
14:17This is how the song came.
14:18I was reading a lot of E.E.
14:19Cummings.
14:20And I don't know, I was like in my feelings with Blossom Deary albums.
14:23And this is what happened.
14:25And he noticed that there was like always sort of like a memory with a like a little
14:30memento or like a souvenir from all the places we've been traveling.
14:34And that's how that got born.
14:36This idea of collecting mementos to go with each song.
14:39And our campaign began that way.
14:41And then the visuals, we really partnered with other directors who were like artists in
14:46their own right.
14:47Like we weren't just looking for someone to be like, come in and do what I'm doing.
14:50We're like, come in and tell us your vision.
14:51And I think we've won so hard by doing that.
14:54It's been a different way of approaching music videos or even, you know, teasing an album
14:59than anything I've done before.
15:00But it's been its own kind of creative collaboration in a way that I'm like really enjoying.
15:06I'm dying to know with all these playlists, because I'm like this too.
15:10What are some chaotic things or things we might not expect on your playlist?
15:15Some chaotic things that you wouldn't expect on my playlist.
15:18I kind of like want to grab my phone to like pull it up and see.
15:21But I know Blossom Deary was.
15:23I know Minnie Riperton was.
15:24I know I was into some of what Dijon was doing too.
15:28I think there's a bit of that that was exciting to me.
15:32I also was loving some ABBA, some Earth, Wind and Fire.
15:37I was listening to just some like music without words too.
15:40Just like some house music.
15:41A lot of like French house music.
15:44And just honestly anything.
15:47Like sometimes I wouldn't even know the name of the song or the artist.
15:49It would just like be something that I heard and it got added to the thing.
15:52So I'm doing a terrible job of explaining it properly.
15:55But it was a mixed bag of chips.
15:56Let's put it that way.
15:57You have a handful of collaborators in pop that have been relevant at the time or become even more relevant.
16:04You've had collaborations with Owl City.
16:11Good Time.
16:12Yeah.
16:13Iconic Dance Bob.
16:14Justin Bieber.
16:15Makes you so beautiful.
16:18You don't know how beautiful you are.
16:21Yeah.
16:21And Charli XCX.
16:22Yeah.
16:23And that was a moment in Charli XCX's career as well that wasn't as big as where she is now.
16:35If you were to pick new collaborators to invite into Club Carly.
16:41For the future?
16:43Yeah.
16:43Oh wow.
16:44Who's getting through the door?
16:45Well, I mean, on this album specifically, I was lucky again to work with Bullion, who I think is just
16:51on another level.
17:00In terms of his sonics, he's just like such a genius and so tasteful with what he does.
17:04I think his project is coming out kind of in tandem with my own.
17:08And so I would re-invite him back to the club.
17:10Am I allowed to like do re-entry?
17:12Sure.
17:12Okay, I'm bringing him back in.
17:13Okay, great.
17:14I love it.
17:14There's some people on my wish list like forever that I would just love to be in the room with.
17:18Like quite honestly, it might shock you that like James Taylor is like number one on the list.
17:23It's like I would just love to like sing some acoustic something with him one day.
17:27Like I don't know what it would be or if that would be allowed, but that's a dream.
17:31That's like a dream.
17:32Just because he's the music of my childhood, I really grew up with like my parents listening to him all
17:36the time.
17:37So like that was just, I don't know, if you want to make me cry in five seconds, put on
17:41a James Taylor song.
17:42It will work.
17:43But I mean, you asked to the club.
17:44I mean, James Taylor, the club sounds interesting, but I just took that somewhere else.
17:48I'm like an acoustic set with him, I would do.
17:51And then to the club, I mean, I think it would be really fun to go to the club with
17:58Troy, actually.
18:00We should go to the club together.

18:37That's been nine weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
18:40Crazy.
18:41You seem to be very happy making the hits you are now, but how does it feel to have a
18:46single
18:47that large in the backlog?
18:50I mean, it's really allowed me the freedom to kind of make the music that I want to make
18:54without really overthinking it too much.
18:57Not that I don't, but without, you know, being too worried about it.
19:02And I think that's the gift that you have to remember when it's like, oh my gosh, that song.
19:06But I come back to feeling like mostly like gratitude and nostalgia.
19:10It was a wild time of my life, to be honest with you.
19:13And a bit of it's like a blur.
19:15Like looking back on it, when I talked to Jared, my keyboard player about it, he's got
19:19like a really good track record for remembering all the places we were and what it was like
19:23and like little flashes of memories I remember.
19:26But it was a whirlwind is the word.
19:28It was a whirlwind.
19:29And I went from being a small like town girl in mission to like all of a sudden going to
19:35airports and having people who I didn't know coming up to me.
19:38So I'm really glad I got to experience something like that.
19:41I don't think it was a place for me to stay permanently on like that level of celebrity
19:45because I think I would have drowned in it.
19:48So I'm glad that I got a taste, but now I get to like go do like my artist project
19:52the
19:52way I want to do it and have a community that like gets it and kind of, you know, carve
19:57out
19:58my little sweet spot of what feels comfortable for me.
20:00You have more projects happening.
20:02You'll be writing the music for 10 Things I Hate About You on Broadway.
20:05Congratulations.
20:06Heck, I am currently writing.
20:08It is almost done.
20:09Yeah, no, we're not all the way done.
20:11But we are, we're pretty in a healthy place and it's been, it's been a long time coming.
20:16It's been a passion project for so many of us and it's like such a stack team.
20:20I'm like kind of in awe that I'm at the table with them.
20:24It's wild.
20:25What's the difference between writing a Carly Rae Jepsen hit versus a Broadway track?
20:30It's, it's, it's, I mean, hate to use this pun, but it's night and day.
20:35It's very different.
20:36It's very different.
20:36There you go.
20:37I did it.

20:38I'm tired.
20:41Truthfully, it's, it's really different because when I'm writing for my project, I am in a
20:47different headspace.
20:48It's a little bit more like what is it that I have to offer about music in general, you
20:52know, and, and sometimes it's like a really prolific time and sometimes there's times
20:56where I'm like not a hundred percent sure what that thing is.
20:59Day and Night was like a fairly prolific, like I was excited and running with it.
21:02So I was, I was really, I was really, you know, in my feelings and in a creative little
21:08hub.
21:08With this, it's a little bit more of a diligent work.
21:11Like you're kind of looking at a beloved story that has a cult following, wanting to
21:15honor it, wanting to do it justice and working with a whole team of people who all have much
21:20more experience than I do in the world of Broadway.
21:22So I'm like kind of part sponge learning and also like offering what I can to this iconic
21:28story and, and to these like incredible actors who are bringing it to life for us.
21:34It's, I think it's such a treat to be able to also like take on different people's like
21:40thoughts and feelings, like writing for a man, writing for somebody older or younger.
21:45It's a completely different side of my brain than I play with when I'm making my own project.
21:49Yeah.
21:49Was this something that you aspired to do, like writing for Broadway?
21:54I don't think I dreamed that big at the beginning.
21:56Like, I mean, if I was like being really bold, I might've written it down on the wishlist.
22:00I don't think I allowed my imagination to go that far.
22:02I started to consider how fun that would be when I was in Cinderella on Broadway.
22:08Cause I was kind of more, not behind the scenes.
22:10I was, you know, on the stage, like kind of doing the show every night and just really
22:16spent time with that music and was sort of starting to learn a little bit about, I don't
22:22know, the formula of it, I guess.
22:24And I, I was excited about one day the idea of it, but it still felt like, like this far
22:32off dream.
22:32It didn't feel possible.
22:33So I sit here today kind of in awe that we're talking about it and it's real and it's been
22:37something we've been putting together.
22:39Cause it's a real bucket list thing for me.
22:42Now that you have a child, do you foresee yourself like playing your music to them?
22:50How are you going to introduce them to this world?
22:52And what do you want them to take away from your discography?
22:56Oh, oh gosh.
22:57I don't know.
22:58I, I, I'm really more interested in figuring out what my child's like passionate about.
23:03And that would be so fun to discover.
23:05I, I gosh, I, I hope it's not sports cause I'm so not good at sports, but they can be
23:12good at sports and I'll drive them.
23:13So that will be fine.
23:15But no, my, my son is going to be so cool to watch.
23:18You know, he's going to be obviously privy to this world.
23:21He's going to go to a lot of shows and a lot of venues, but it'll be interesting to see
23:25if he picks music or something else.
23:27And in terms of my discography, I don't know, that'll, that'll be like a wild thing.
23:32I know with like my nieces and nephews, they're starting to discover little things at school
23:36and like come home and say, my niece sang, she's like, do you know the song?
23:39And saying, call me maybe to me the other day.
23:41And I was like, I am familiar with that song.
23:43Actually, it was very cute.
23:46So she's realizing how famous you are.
23:49I think she's just more confused about how many times I've changed my hair color.
23:54Really?
23:54Yeah.
23:54Yeah.
23:55Like, I think that's kind of more what she wants to talk about of like, but when was it
23:59black and why was it blonde?
24:01I'm like, I'm a woman.
24:02What can I say?
24:03She'll figure it out.

24:06You've already been hitting me with some day and night puns.

24:11And we were on the same wavelength of thought.

24:17So Carly, I'm going to give you a scenario.
