00:15a wall of navy and blue forming a guard of honour. Steve Golchevsky lost his battle with lung cancer
00:22earlier this month. Today his life and outstanding career were celebrated by 700 mourners in Brisbane
00:28City Hall. While he came from humble beginnings his contribution to our state can never be
00:35underestimated. In 1980 the 21 year old followed his father and older brother into policing quickly
00:40achieving his lifelong dream of becoming a detective. The fact that mum and dad didn't live long enough
00:46to see him become commissioner of the Queensland Police Service is sad but I believe they realised
00:52he would one day hold that position. As the disaster coordinator and later commissioner
00:57he'd go on to become a guiding light during some of Queensland's darkest times. Cyclones Marsha and
01:04Debbie, the Grantham floods and the COVID pandemic. He taught me how to handle disappointments and
01:09setbacks, how to win and lose graciously and how to jump into action during a crisis. He was also an
01:16accomplished hockey player and a fan of Lord of the Rings and Coldplay, the 67 year old's favourite
01:22band the soundtrack for the moving service.
01:30Words aren't enough to convey the depth of emotion we feel and the great big hole in our hearts that
01:36may never heal. Having spent 46 years in the Queensland Police Service, Steve Golchevsky remains
01:42Queensland's third longest serving police officer and its longest acting disaster coordinator.
01:48He's survived by his wife, six children and four grandchildren.
