00:00Why did the Russian Revolution happen?
00:01During the beginning of the 20th century, Russia was ruled by Tsar Nicholas II.
00:06Russia had been falling behind the rest of Europe and had terrible living conditions.
00:09In 1905, there was a peaceful protest asking the Tsar to fix these problems,
00:13but instead, the protesters were massacred.
00:16In 1914, World War I began.
00:18The soldiers were poorly equipped, resulting in massive casualties.
00:21The economy was falling apart and people were starving.
00:24The people finally had enough, and in 1917, the February Revolution happened.
00:28The protesters came to the palace, the soldiers joined them, and the Tsar was forced to abdicate.
00:32The provisional government was created, led by liberals.
00:35That's when Lenin returned from exile.
00:37He promised the people peace, land, and bread.
00:39His party, the Bolsheviks, became more popular, and later in 1917 the October Revolution happened.
00:44Lenin took control of the provisional government.
00:46In 1918, Russia ended the war, losing a lot of land.
00:50But then the Russian Civil War began.
00:51The communists fought against the anti-communists, known as the Whites.
00:55And in 1922, the communists won and established the USSR, ending the revolution.
