00:22news this past week hundreds of detainees were released ahead of the expiration of the state of
00:29emergency the prime minister declared her love for venezuela's acting president deltie rodriguez
00:34and various schools requested greater police presence as per usual if it was happening it
00:41was on six let's get right into it 69 year old star sabga was released from house arrest last week
00:49as hundreds of other state detainees were released from custody her attorney faris alrawi made the
00:55announcement today i confirm that pursuant a revocation of a preventative detention order
01:03the honorable minister of homeland security roger alexander revoked the previous detention order
01:11that he had issued in relation to our client star sabga she was as you will recall detained on the
01:2026th of june 2026 at 10 15 a.m this morning members of the trinidad sabga police service provided
01:31the revocation order to miss sabga and i received that order with her that means that she is now
01:42officially back into private life i can confirm that no charges stand against miss sabga alrawi said his
01:51client is still coming to terms with the entire ordeal and miss abga is in a mix of emotions and
01:59it's going
02:00to take a while for her to come to the reality that she can lock her front door that she
02:04can lock her
02:05bedroom door and not expect somebody to walk in and do a check at 4 a.m in the morning
02:09while she's asleep
02:10or 12 o'clock midnight she is of course one of the very fortunate people to have been put into
02:17home
02:18detention i say that very guardedly because there are at least 600 people who are in or have been in
02:27preventative detention and that is no small number meantime the deputy police commissioner in charge
02:35of operations said the gtps is fully prepared to protect the public as preventive detention orders
02:42were revoked and persons previously held were released in phases and with the state of emergency
02:47due to end this week the dcp sought to give the assurance that the gtps has implemented the necessary
02:54operational measures just the days before the state of emergency in trinidad and tobago is due to end
03:00next week deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations suzette martin has a message for the
03:06public our policing posture will continue to be guided by intelligence evidence and the law
03:15we will maintain an appropriate police presence and conduct targeted operations where necessary
03:22to address illegal firearms gun activity and other serious criminal threats while protecting victims
03:31weaknesses and vulnerable communities dcp martin issued a statement the day after homeland security
03:38minister roger alexander spoke about the revocation of preventive detention orders as he delivered a
03:44statement in the house of representatives regarding the end of the state of emergency
03:49the trend island tobago police service is fully prepared to protect the public and maintain law and
03:55order as preventative detention orders are revoked and persons previously held under them are released
04:03in phases the tttps has implemented the necessary operational measures strengthened coordination among its
04:13intelligence investigative investigative and operational units and remains focused on preventing and
04:20disrupting serious criminal activity deputy police commissioner martin said that quote the trinidad
04:27and tobago police service further wishes to make clear that the revocation of a preventive detention order
04:32or the release of a person held under such an order does not of itself provide any basis for police
04:38action
04:39against that individual end quote dcp martin further said quote equally release should not be understood
04:47to mean that a matter has been brought to an end where a person remains the subject of an active
04:53investigation the ttps will continue to gather evidence and pursue that investigation to its proper
04:59conclusion whether during the state of emergency or after it has been lifted end quote the dcp also said that
05:07any further action will be founded on evidence and taken strictly in accordance with the law our officers
05:14will act professionally and proportionately with due regard for the rights of every citizen
05:21i urge the public to remain calm and vigilant and to report criminal activity or immediate threats
05:29the public safety through the appropriate police channels
05:33the emergency powers may change however our responsibility to public safety does not
05:42the ttps remains focused and committed to the safety and security of trinidad and tobago the homeland
05:51security minister told the parliament on friday evening that the government intends to bring a bill for
05:57special zones of operations back to parliament as soon as possible jule brown tv6 news but the opposition
06:05issued a call for accountability from the government opposition leader penelope beckles questioned
06:10exactly what has been achieved during the months of extraordinary powers and the thousands of preventive detention
06:16orders issued for more than a year trinidad and tobago has operated under rolling states of emergency
06:24now as the latest soe comes to an end the opposition says the country deserves a clear counting
06:30of the results opposition leader penelope beckles is specifically seeking information on the thousands
06:36of people detained under emergency measures including how many were charged how many were released without
06:43charge and how many ultimately face successful prosecution i mean i made the point a couple days ago that
06:51come the 15th when it expires hundreds of people are going to be released and um and the fact is
06:59that
06:59well let's say if you look at what happened for the first state of emergency and the second state of
07:05emergency it would be a lot of people that would be released so the question arises what why are these
07:11people being charged it cannot be that you're using your extraordinary powers under the state of
07:17emergency to simply arrest people keep them in custody and then release them and she says the government
07:25has had ample time to build cases against those it identified as serious criminals and the truth is
07:32that when the government makes it very clear when they have their press conference it is really hell
07:38that they have the evidence in other words they're able to tell you what gang they are from they're able
07:43to tell you that they were arrested before they tell you they're known to the police they give you all
07:48basically what we as an as an or the average citizen would think as evidence beckles is also questioning
07:54the financial cost of the measures saying quote billions have been spent on rolling soes if one
08:01considers the appropriations to national security the ttps and law enforcement end quote with the soe now
08:08ending beckles is also raising concerns about what happens next particularly whether those identified
08:14by the state is dangerous will pose a threat once extraordinary detention powers are removed she's
08:21calling on prime minister kamala passan missasa who chairs the national security council to account to
08:26the nation for the outcome of the emergency measures for the opposition the question is no longer simply
08:32what powers were exercised but what tangible results were achieved we'll have more news when we return

14:27education minister to address what it described as long-standing safety concerns at savon north
14:33secondary school this after a teacher was assaulted by an intruder on the compound it was supposed to
14:40be another school day at san juan north secondary instead teachers are now confronting serious
14:46questions about security and safety according to the president of the trinidad and tobago unified
14:52teachers association crystal ash an intruder breached the school's compound entered the classroom and
14:58assaulted a teacher we're here today at the sour north secondary school it's not a pleasant day it's
15:05not a nice day it's a very uncomfortable day is it is the day after uh someone would have entered
15:13the
15:13compound illegally somebody would have it would seem as if they breached the perimeter fence and they
15:18entered a classroom and basically assaulted a teacher when i say assaulted in terms of invading your
15:24personal space items were stolen from the teacher the teacher was asked to lie down on the ground of
15:29course she was smart enough not to do that she was able to alert other persons so the fact that
15:35there
15:35was an intruder in the compound and she was able to make her way out for tutor this is not
15:40simply a case
15:40of one criminal incident tutor cannot go into schools and fix things to go into schools and and give
15:46principals instructions we do not have that authority what we can do is identify things that needs to be
15:53addressed and we will highlight them we will write the authorities we will engage discussion we will
15:58highlight them we will talk we will do whatever it needs to be done ash says the question now is

16:03only what was stolen but what could have been lost this situation here could have been worse this teacher
16:11could have been injured this teacher's life could have been lost what's a sad day would that have been in
16:19trinidad and tobago and after an experience like this where does the teacher turn for help tutor says
16:26the employee assistance program a support system teachers could previously rely on is no longer
16:31available the union says that teachers have now decided they will step in themselves if necessary
16:38including paying for professional assistance for their colleague if the ministry of education does not
16:44the eap employee assistance program is no longer in existence they can no longer so who is she to go
16:51to you know what they made a decision there to do they made a decision collectively that if their
16:56comrade their teacher their family member in terms of teaching needs to go to eap and the ministry of
17:01education will not pay for it they will pay for it but the concerns at san juan north secondary goes
17:08beyond
17:08what happened inside the classroom tutor says it has been seeking assistance to repair the school's
17:14perimeter fence and then there's the technical vocational block which has been abandoned for years
17:20tutor says the building has electrical and sewage problems that have not been addressed by the ministry
17:26of education there's a block the tech voc the technical vocational block it is it has been decommissioned
17:32it is no longer in use it's an area that is just basically abandoned because they have electrical
17:37issues they have a sewer issue an electrical issue that has not been addressed by the ministry of
17:42education the union says these conditions are creating an unsafe working environment for teachers
17:48and students the teachers are basically unsafe in their work environment and according to the
17:53OSHA if your environment is not a safe one you can take certain decisions so pretty soon you will see
18:01students exiting you will see teachers exiting because this is where we are at at this point in time on
18:0614th in trinidad and tobigo when we cannot be proactive and we have to be reactive tuto is calling on
18:12the
18:12ministry of education to address the issue at san juan north secondary before the situation worsens and
18:18before another security breach has even more serious consequences charlotte kisto tv6 news and minister of
18:26homeland security roger alexander revealed that 25 schools have requested police presence in the first week of the new
18:34school year the news came less than one day after video on social media showed students fighting on
18:40the first day of school speaking via telephone with tv6 minister of homeland security roger alexander
18:48informed us that a number of additional schools have asked for a police presence he says it shows
18:53the success of the trinidad and tobigo police service school oriented policing program the minister told
18:59me this yesterday that 25 additional schools are asking for police officers so something is working
19:05well when contacted for comment president of the trinidad and tobigo unified teachers association
19:11crystal ash said the tutor had not been privy to any such requests and are not in a position to
19:16comment
19:17on the ttps school oriented policing program no i we have nothing has come to tutor directly in
19:24relation to if they if schools or principals would have been requesting for um to have the presence in
19:30their in their school of the police officers tutors have not received any any such correspondence or
19:34information by way of any sort of mechanism whatsoever do you think this program has been a success
19:39though the police presence within the schools honestly twitter is not in a position to to make a
19:46comment on that because again we have no we have no data we have no empirical data we have no
19:50information
19:50nobody shares anything all we have is what we read on the on the on the media we listen on
19:55the media
19:55in relation to this particular program we have asked that communication be sent to us so that we know
20:01the parameters of these officers on the compound as they interact with our members and the students we have
20:05never received anything president of the association of principals of public secondary schools of
20:10trinidad and tobago charlene hicks rayburn also says she is unaware of any such requests and informed tv6
20:17that the association has recommended more police patrols for a long time now one of the things we have
20:23asked for is a greater police presence only before and after she says some schools have been grateful for
20:29the help provided by the presence of the police officers but what is of greater concern is the non-renewal
20:35of contracts for safety officers i've been hearing more in terms of the concerns as regards to the
20:43non-renewal of contracts of safety officers that is one of the main issues right now the safety officers
20:50were doing uh in terms of in the schools that they have been very effective um with regards to
21:00assistance during the launch period and so police officers as i said there are different degrees
21:05of success some persons would have expressed but different principles we have you know things worked
21:12a little better for them but um there are some who didn't see the need or the what exactly because
21:17we're still asking for their job specifications they they um what their guidelines as to the you know
21:27what are exactly their rules and functions that still has never been given tv6 news made multiple
