00:00In France last month, 38% of every new car sold was fully electric. Not a hybrid, not a plug
00:07-in,
00:08a pure battery electric vehicle. And that is an all-time record for the country.
00:13And it's the third month in a row France has set a new high, after 30% in May and
00:2035% in June,
00:22now 38%. What's next? Probably 40% in September. To put this in perspective,
00:29a year ago, EVs were at 17.7% year to date. Now they're at 30% for 2026 so
00:37far. And the August
00:39number alone more than doubled year on year to over 36,000 cars. Here's the part that matters for
00:47the rest of the market. The overall French car market actually grew by 7.4% in August. And
00:53electric cars did all of that lifting on their own. Petrol sales collapsed by 40% to just 11%
01:01market share, down from 31.5% two years ago. Diesel is basically dead in France at 1.9%.
01:12Imagine being someone owning a diesel-powered vehicle. How likely is it, do you think,
01:17in five to 10 years that there'll be many gas stations that will have diesel available when
01:22no one's buying the cars today? And this is the one people don't expect. Conventional hybrids fell
01:30by 9%. Isn't that what Toyota said everyone was going to buy, and Nissan as well? In a market where
01:36the electric share jumps this fast, hybrids don't get a soft landing. They just get skipped altogether.
01:43So, hybrids being a bridge technology, what we're seeing in China, that's not true. Hybrid sales are
01:48falling there as well. Why now? Well, two things. France relaunched its social leasing scheme in
01:55mid-July. This lets lower-income households lease a new electric car for a capped monthly payment.
02:02And French outlets are also pointing to rising fuel prices, pushing people to make the switch.
02:09Between them, that's turned electric into the default choice rather than the premium one.
02:15Then there is the bestseller. The Tesla Model Y was the number one car in France in August,
02:21all powertrains included, with 4,622 registrations, up almost five-fold year-on-year.
02:31Matt Gasnia at Best Selling Cars blog says that's the first time a non-French car has ever topped
02:38the French monthly chart if you count the Daisha Sandero as half French. Tesla as a brand jumped
02:46to seventh overall. And it's not just Tesla though. The Renault 5 is seventh, the Renault Scenic E-Tech
02:54is tenth, the Skoda Elrock and the Volkswagen ID.4 both hit their best ever rankings, the Kia EV2 is
03:00already Kia's best-selling car in France, and Chinese newcomer Jayku cracked the top 20 brands.
03:06So when a market goes from 17% to 38% in about a year, that's not a trend. That's
03:16a tipping point.
03:17And France has just crossed it for good.
03:21Thanks for watching.
