After Nazi Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Arthur Greiser became one of the most brutal Nazi officials in annexed western Poland. As Gauleiter and Reich Governor of the Posen region, he oversaw forced Germanization, mass deportations, persecution of the Catholic Church, and the murder of Jews and Poles.
Closely tied to Heinrich Himmler, Greiser helped implement Nazi racial policies and supported the killings connected to the Chełmno extermination camp. This episode follows his rise within the Nazi regime, his role in terrorizing occupied Poland, and how he ultimately paid for his crimes after the Second World War.

00:00After the war, Greiser was transferred to Poland, where he faced trial before the Supreme National
00:06Tribunal in June 1946. He was charged with crimes against the Polish people, including the murder
00:13of hundreds of thousands of civilians, the mass deportation of Poles for forced labor in the
00:18German Reich, robbery and plundering of the Polish state and people, and crimes against peace.
00:24The charges against Greiser also included taking Polish children against the will of their parents
00:29or guardians, forcibly putting them in German families or public orphanages within the Reich,
00:34while severing all contacts with their families and nation by giving them German names.
00:40Greiser's defense that he was only following orders did not hold up, as it was shown that the
00:45other Gauleiters had not followed similar policies. His lawyers also argued that, as the head of the
00:50formerly independent Free City of Danzig, Greiser could not be judged by another country, but the
00:56court rejected this claim.
