00:31WCW Slamboree 1997 took place in the Independence Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 18th, 1997. Just under 10
00:40,000 fans showed up for the event and an estimated 220,000 homes bought the show on pay-per-view.
00:46There's no WCW Championship match tonight in the main event, instead the original Wolfpack consisting of Scott Hall, Kevin Nash
00:53and Six are gonna face Ric Flair, Kevin Green and Roddy Piper in a no disqualification match.
01:00Flair has been out injured since September of 1996 so this is his big return match.
01:05We have 9 matches to look at today so let's get started with the TV title bout featuring Steven Regal
01:11in Ultimo Dragon.
01:17Regal said on Nitro that he's throwing away his nobility and bringing back the Groppler who fought in England as
01:23a young lad, beating guys twice his age at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the 80s.
01:28He has his hands full tonight though because Ultimo Dragon has been having some seriously good matches recently, he's been
01:35a highlight of WCW programming for sure over these past 6 months or so.
01:40It's all about gaining wrist control to start this one off as Mike Tanay says Dragon will have to approach
01:45this match differently.
01:47Dragon brings Regal down and an armbar gets applied but Regal quickly counters with a headscissors submission.
01:53A test of strength follows and Regal throws Dragon to the mat after Dragon bridges out but Regal manages to
01:59cross Dragon's arms over his neck and we see a modified surfboard stretch.
02:03Regal then performs a tilt-award slam and he then decides to stomp on Dragon's head.
02:08So far, Regal has been completely in control.
02:12The TV champion then comes back with a shoulder block, Dragon then moves into a side headlock and Regal goes
02:18down after a drop kick.
02:20Regal tries to put an end to Dragon's offensive flurry with a boot to the head but Dragon replies with
02:24a drop toehold.
02:26Regal then gets confused when the champ shows off his balance on the top rope and the challenger gets kicked
02:31away.
02:32And then we see Dragon's signature kick combination, the final kick hits Regal right on the throat.
02:37Regal then takes a few hard kicks to the back, Dragon gets a little vicious here and Regal finds himself
02:43in a half crab but he makes it to the ropes.
02:45A neckbreaker from Ultimo, Dragon gets followed up with the headscissors and when Regal fails to counter with a Regal
02:50stretch,
02:51he too ends up getting a little vicious and Dragon takes a ton of kicks on the mat.
02:55Dragon has to take some time on the outside to regain composure.
02:59Regal hits a suplex, the two competitors trade full Nelson locks, Regal slaps Dragon after once again failing to lock
03:07in the Regal stretch and Dragon retaliates with a few slaps of his own.
03:11This gets the crowd making a little noise.
03:14An armbar from Dragon gets countered with another failed attempt at a Regal stretch but Regal does manage to pull
03:20off a bow and arrow.
03:21Dragon then gets out of a chinlock by biting down on Regal's forearm and then we see the muda lock
03:27from Ultimo Dragon before he moves into a crossface camo clutch.
03:32This has been a great match with a very different pace than normal, submission fans shouldn't sleep on this one.
03:38Dragon counters a backdrop and Regal gets drop kicked out of the ring.
03:42Sonny Ono kicks Regal on the outside and Dragon actually doesn't look too happy with his manager here.
03:48Dragon then performs a top rope Frankensteiner, Regal kicks out.
03:52Dragon goes for a moonsault but Regal moves out of the way and Regal once again fails to apply the
03:58Regal stretch.
03:59Frustrated, Regal goes for a double underhook suplex but it's countered with another Frankensteiner.
04:05The fight goes to the outside again where Regal casually walks away from a plancha, I love this,
04:11but Dragon's able to hit the acai moonsault and Regal is now in trouble.
04:15Ono once again begins kicking Regal but when Dragon throws Regal back in the ring, Ono kicks Dragon.
04:22The commentators say this was unintentional but it sure didn't look like it was.
04:27Regal takes advantage, we see an inverted suplex, and Regal finally applies the Regal stretch to become a four-time
04:35TV champion.
04:37WCW simply can't be beat with their opening pay-per-view matches, this was another great underrated opening contest that
04:43has the potential to be match of the night.
04:46Looks like Sonny Ono is now done with Ultimo Dragon 2.
04:54Medusa vs Luna Vichon was up next and there's a few problems here.
04:58First of all, WCW waited way too long before having this match,
05:02and secondly, the rivalry hasn't been given any TV time at all.
05:07Luna attacked Medusa twice over the course of a couple of months.
05:10Maybe there was something that was stopping Medusa and Luna showing up on TV, but yeah.
05:15The commentators say that Medusa defeated WCW women's champion Akira Hokuto in Japan,
05:21and Medusa should be the women's champion, but apparently Sonny Ono says that the match never happened.
05:26There's some controversy surrounding the championship here, but why care about it?
05:31The championship belt is seen again on WCW very soon before it's totally forgotten about,
05:37but we'll get to all that soon on Reliving the War.
05:40Luna and Medusa are given 5 minutes here that goes by very quickly after the 16-minute TV title match.
05:47It's all Luna to start off with.
05:49Medusa gets an opening after nailing a spinning heel kick,
05:52but Luna comes right back with a chokehold.
05:54An impressive hook clothesline from Medusa brings her right back into the match,
05:59Luna misses a top rope splash as WCW advertised their website,
06:03and Medusa gets the win with her signature German suplex.
06:06A decent match in the ring, but no one really had an investment in the rivalry,
06:10it seemed to be an afterthought.
06:12Randy Savage then shows up,
06:14he takes a microphone away from Mean Gene Okerlund and he heads to the ring to cut a promo.
06:18While putting over members of the NWO,
06:21Randy gets interrupted by fans chanting DDP.
06:24Savage says Paige doesn't want none of the macho madness anymore,
06:28but Dallas shows up to prove Savage wrong.
06:30Dallas is holding Savage's crutch,
06:33a crutch Hogan used to attack DDP on Nitro.
06:36Savage quickly gets out of the ring,
06:38and Eric Bischoff has to hold Randy back.
06:40Eric calls for the troops,
06:42and out comes the NWO mid-quarters.
06:44DDP decides to bait Savage back in the ring
06:47by saying the macho man has to go to Hogan's house
06:49to clean his car and kiss his ass.
06:52Randy tells the NWO to step aside,
06:54and the macho man ends up getting in the ring
06:56and getting destroyed with the crutch.
06:59Paige takes out Bagwell,
07:00Vincent and Eric Bischoff as the crowd goes absolutely nuts,
07:04but Big Scott Norton puts an end to it.
07:06The NWO then regroup and Paige gets attacked,
07:09but the giant hits the ring
07:11and the New World Order decide to leave.
07:13Macho man still wants to fight,
07:15but he's held back.
07:17The commentators say that
07:18what happened tonight will not go unanswered.
07:21Paige is gonna pay for what he did to Savage.
07:25Ray Mysterio vs Yuji Yasaroka was up next.
07:29Yuji was a superstar from the Wrestle and Romance
07:31or Wrestle Association Art promotion in Japan,
07:34and this, along with a match on WCW Saturday night
07:37the night prior,
07:38would be his only two televised appearances for WCW.
07:42Mysterio, being the established WCW star,
07:45gets all the adulation here.
07:47There's this great spot where Mysterio performs
07:49a somersault plancha over Mark Curtis
07:51and onto his opponent.
07:53Yasaroka counters a springboard attack
07:55with a jumping spinning wheel kick.
07:57There was this double-armed DDT from Yuji
07:59that looked great,
08:01but predictably,
08:02Ray won the match with a West Coast pop.
08:04A lot of the match was spent on the mat too,
08:06which wasn't normally seen in cruiserweight matches.
08:09Of course, the cruiserweights do perform
08:11grounded submissions often,
08:13but normally they aren't locked in for very long.
08:16Yuji Yasaroka kept the submission holes locked in
08:19maybe a little longer than he should've,
08:21but really, that's the only small complaint here.
08:24A decent match, but not must see.
08:30Alright, now it gets good.
08:32A Glacier vs Mortis rematch on pay-per-view.
08:35Vandenberg, Mortis and Wrath stole Glacier's helmet
08:38and Glacier wants it back.
08:40Glacier has been falling victim to his Mortal Kombat compadres
08:44and it's been a blast watching this stuff on Nitro.
08:47It's so ridiculous that it's good
08:49and besides, all three men here are pretty good in the ring
08:52with Mortis being the standout, for me anyway.
08:55There's nothing I like to see more than old Frosty Balls
08:58getting his personal items stole while also getting beat up
09:01so this, for me, is gonna be a delightful little match.
09:05Also, Fightful reported that Ray Lloyd,
09:07the man behind the Glacier gimmick,
09:09recently filed trademarks for Glacier paper goods,
09:13stationery items such as pens, paper, desk calendars,
09:17picture cards, carry cases, things of that nature.
09:20Glacier is making a comeback, lads,
09:23in the form of office supplies,
09:25and I for one can't wait to buy my Glacier coloring pencils.
09:28I bet they arrive late and they don't work either.
09:31Anyway, Vandenberg says he and Mortis
09:33are gonna send Glacier back to his igloo tonight
09:36in a body bag.
09:37Glacier makes the mistake of rushing down
09:40and sliding into the ring,
09:42and Mortis takes advantage by beating
09:43the ever-loving shit out of chilly McFreeze in the corner.
09:47No kidding, Glacier gets decimated here
09:50with a ton of strikes as Mortis targets the knee and head.
09:54While Glacier dies a slow death in the corner,
09:56we see Wrath making his way down to the ring.
09:59Man, this is gonna be good.
10:01We're gonna see the end of Glacier tonight on PPV,
10:04and this would have been worth the price of admission.
10:06But no, Glacier has magically healed and he performs
10:10an electric chair drop on Mortis, damn it.
10:12Glacier hits a clothesline and a back body drop
10:15before Mortis gets sent over the top rope,
10:17but thankfully Wrath gets in the ring
10:19and he breaks Mortis' staff over Glacier's back.
10:22Glacier wins via DQ, but I don't care.
10:25It's time for Glacier to pay for arriving late to WCW back in 1996.
10:30Two cold arse holio gets choked out with the staff
10:33and Mortis lays in the strikes in the corner.
10:36Mortis drops Glacier on the steel steps
10:38with a kinda modified Famouser and it looked awesome.
10:41Vandenberg even gets in on the action
10:44and Glacier quite simply has no hope at all this time.
10:48Wrath goes for the death penalty
10:49and wait, wait, wait, wait, who the fuck is this?
10:53The commentators say it's a fan or the police.
10:57This dude is ruining a very special moment for me
11:00by taking out Wrath and Mortis
11:02with some admittedly awesome karate kicks.
11:05Security come down and Tony Schiavone says,
11:07is that Ernest Miller?
11:09Dusty and Heenan say, yeah,
11:11it's actually the real Ernest Miller,
11:14live and in person.
11:15But the problem here is,
11:16nobody knew who the fuck Ernest Miller was
11:19unless they followed karate
11:20or was a diehard kickboxing fan.
11:23Admit it, you didn't know who Ernest Miller was
11:26when this happened and the fact that the commentators
11:28expected people to know who it was
11:30is a joke in itself.
11:32Miller was a karate instructor around this time
11:35and he was teaching Eric Bischoff's son
11:36the deadly arts.
11:38Bischoff apparently asked Miller to come into WCW
11:41and show what he could do
11:42and well, here he is, fucking saving Glacier.
11:46All joking aside, Ernest Miller would end up
11:48being a quite memorable character in WCW
11:51and he really wasn't bad in the ring at all
11:54and on the mic.
11:55Some may say he was even underrated,
11:58but we'll be seeing more of the kid on WCW Nitro very soon.
12:02He's a friend of Glacier,
12:04so he's no friend of mine.
12:09You ready to take care of some horseman business?
12:12You better be because Jeff Jarrett battles Dean Malenko next for the US Championship.
12:17Unfortunately, or fortunately, whatever way you want to look at it,
12:20Double J was unable to get the job done
12:22and the finish of this one brings us right back to around 4 weeks ago.
12:27It's one step forward and 10 steps back
12:29when it comes to the four horsemen in 1997.
12:32Those watching Reliving the War and following the series would remember,
12:36for weeks upon weeks,
12:37Double J was having some problems with Big Mongo McMichael
12:40because Debra, Steve's wife,
12:42seemed to show Jeff a lot of support
12:44and this annoyed the former Chicago Bears defensive tackle.
12:48When Reggie White showed up in WCW to challenge Mongo,
12:51it looked like Double J and McMichael got on the same page
12:54and their repetitive and played-out rivalry came to an end.
12:58Well, tonight at Slamboree,
13:00that rivalry started again
13:02and it's the same shit we've seen before.
13:05Jarrett bumps into Malenko
13:06and he falls out of the ring.
13:08Debra checks on Jarrett
13:10and this is enough to make Big Steve McMichael walk down the ramp
13:13and he tells Debra to stay away from Jarrett.
13:15Mongo tells Jeff to do his job
13:17before throwing him back in the ring
13:19and Jarrett takes a double underhook powerbomb
13:22before submitting to the Texas Cloverleaf.
13:24As for the match itself,
13:26Deen clearly worked a style more suitable for Double J
13:29and I don't mean to be negative,
13:31but it was detrimental not only to the bout
13:33but also Deen's streak of incredible pay-per-view matches.
13:36This one was a lot slower
13:38and a lot more by the numbers
13:40than the other matches Malenko has had
13:42over the past lot of WCW pay-per-views
13:44and that's a shame.
13:46Again, there's no real reason to watch this one.
13:52Next up we have a deathmatch,
13:54Ming vs. another horseman, Chris Benoit.
13:57No pinfalls, no countouts, no DQs,
13:59it's over when one man can't continue.
14:02This match stems from the Kevin Sullivan vs. Chris Benoit rivalry.
14:06Sullivan is kinda using Ming as a henchman here in storyline
14:10but in reality,
14:11Sullivan was preparing to step away from the ring
14:13and putting all focus on backstage work.
14:16Kevin has one more match in WCW
14:19and that one happens at Bash at the Beach
14:21in a few months' time.
14:22Turns out Kevin wasn't too legit to quit after all.
14:25Sullivan's on-screen character
14:27hasn't added much to WCW's programming
14:30and it was the right move to step away.
14:32There were too many big dogs in WCW,
14:35too many younger guys who could put on better matches,
14:37Sullivan didn't really have a place on TV
14:39with his most recent promos feeling like a waste of time
14:42and that's time that could have been spent on other guys.
14:46So, Ming vs. Benoit,
14:48this sounds like it should be good.
14:50Benoit and Ming cautiously try to attack each other
14:53at the start of the match
14:54and they also show caution when going for a lockup.
14:56Ming tries to take a shortcut during the second lockup
14:59and he kicks Benoit,
15:01but Benoit counters the second kick with a dragon screw.
15:04The third lockup ends with Ming
15:05hitting a belly-to-belly suplex.
15:07Ming lays in a few kicks
15:09and Chris Benoit gets stunned,
15:10but the crippler fires back with a German suplex.
15:13Both men take a moment before getting back to their feet.
15:16Ming goes for a big boot,
15:17but Chris holds onto the ropes
15:19before hitting a low dropkick,
15:21but Ming kicks Benoit when Chris goes for a figure four.
15:24On the outside of the ring,
15:26Chris takes a hard slap,
15:27but he answers by throwing Ming into the ring steps.
15:30It's all back and forth here
15:31and no one is gaining any kind of advantage.
15:34The match resets back inside the ropes,
15:35and Ming brings Chris to the corner.
15:37You can see the sweat fly off Benoit's chest
15:40after a few hard chops,
15:41but Chris gives as good as he gets.
15:43This, however, just pisses Ming off
15:45and Chris gets annihilated afterwards.
15:48Jackie shows up
15:49and she stands at the entranceway.
15:51Woman approaches Jackie
15:52and she backs off.
15:54The commentators wonder why Jackie even decided to show up.
15:57Ming applies a half crab
15:59and Chris Benoit makes it to the ropes.
16:01This is a deathmatch,
16:02so why Randy Anderson gave Ming a five count
16:04is anyone's guess.
16:06I know this kind of thing happens frequently
16:08in no disqualification matches,
16:09but I always hate it when it happens.
16:12Benoit takes a pile driver
16:13and the referee asks Chris if he wants to end it.
16:16Benoit gets back to his feet.
16:18He then manages to trap Ming's arm
16:20and we see the crossface.
16:21Ming makes it to the ropes
16:23and again Anderson gives a five count.
16:25Tony Schiavone rightfully says
16:27that Chris doesn't have to break the hole
16:29but Benoit releases his submission finisher.
16:32After recovering on the outside,
16:33Ming completely unloads on Benoit
16:35as woman screams on the outside.
16:38Randy begins a ten count
16:39but Chris gets up
16:40and he goes right back down.
16:42Ming is unstoppable tonight.
16:44Chris again challenges Ming to come at him
16:46and this time it goes to the corner
16:48where Ming lays in the boots.
16:50Chris gets out
16:51and he starts throwing right hands
16:52before going for his three German suplexes
16:55but Ming counters the third with a few chops.
16:58Chris again traps the arm
16:59and we see another crippler crossface
17:01and we see another rope break.
17:04A suicide dive from Chris Benoit
17:06keeps Ming down on the outside.
17:08Chris goes for a top rope move
17:09back in the ring
17:10but Ming stops the horseman.
17:12Benoit then counters a slam
17:13and we see another German suplex
17:15while Ming was elevated a little
17:17on the bottom rope
17:18and now it's time for the diving headbutt.
17:20Chris goes up to finish the match off
17:22but Ming catches Chris on the landing
17:24and we see the Tongan death grip.
17:26Woman pleads for Chris to give it up
17:28while the crowd chant for Benoit
17:30but Chris shakes his head
17:31he wants to see this one through.
17:33Ming brings it to the mat
17:35and it's over.
17:36Chris's body goes limp.
17:38He can't answer the referee
17:39so Ming wins the match.
17:41Ming heads back up the entranceway
17:43as woman and officials check on Chris
17:45and I enjoyed this one quite a bit.
17:48It was hard hitting with some of the chops
17:50looking particularly brutal.
17:52Both men looked good throughout
17:53and I thought Ming getting the victory was unexpected.
18:00The Steiner brothers took on Conan
18:02and Hugh Morris next
18:03and this one was plucked out of thin air.
18:05No build up, no story,
18:07just a random tag team match
18:09featuring Rick and Scott Steiner
18:10and two members of the Dungeon of Doom.
18:12The Dungeon of Doom were getting
18:14slowly phased out too by the looks of things
18:16as Morris and Conan come out to different theme music.
18:19Also, some guy knocks Conan's hat off
18:21during the entrances,
18:22just thought I'd point that out.
18:24Scotty and Morris start this one off,
18:26Scott lands an arm drag
18:27and Morris complains about hair pulling.
18:29Steiner then applies a top wrist lock
18:31and when Morris slams Scott to the mat,
18:33Scott then complains about hair pulling.
18:35Morris hits a shoulder block
18:37and he tries to bring it to the corner
18:38but Scotty comes back with a belly to belly
18:41before applying a submission on the mat.
18:43Scott then tags in brother Rick
18:45and the dog-faced gremlins too busy
18:47barking and running around the ring.
18:49Morris catches Rick with a few right hands
18:51followed by a corner clothesline
18:52but once again,
18:53Hugh Morris takes a suplex,
18:55this time it's an overhead belly to belly.
18:57Two Steiner lines followed by a diving Steiner lines
19:00enough to knock Morris out of the ring
19:02and the funny man has been outwrestled
19:04by the Steiner brothers.
19:05Conan tries his luck next
19:07but it's another Steiner line from Rick
19:09that keeps Conan in check.
19:11Rick gets in a belly to back before tagging Scott back in
19:14but a boot from the corner puts Scotty down.
19:17Scotty doesn't stay down for long though
19:19because we see another overhead belly to belly suplex.
19:22If you enjoy big suplexes
19:24then this is definitely the match for you.
19:26Morris comes back in
19:28and Jimmy hard trips up Scott.
19:29Morris then drops Scott on the top rope
19:31and the dungeon of doomers
19:32then begin quick tagging and double teaming.
19:35Both guys try to make Scott top out
19:37by focusing on his left arm
19:38but Scott hangs in there.
19:40Morris misses a clothesline
19:41and we see one more belly to belly
19:43before Scott tags in Rick.
19:45Rick cleans house
19:46and the match breaks down.
19:48All four men are in the ring
19:49and Conan gets taken out.
19:51Morris misses the no laughing matter moonsault
19:53and we see the Frankensteiner from Scott.
19:56It's been a while since he's done that move
19:58and the crowd pops huge.
19:59Rick covers Morris
20:00and it's over.
20:01The Steiner brothers win
20:03it's slamboree.
20:04Conan looks pretty disappointed on the outside.
20:06He gets in the ring
20:07and he takes out Morris
20:09with a low dropkick
20:10and a DDT.
20:11He then pays no attention
20:12to Jimmy hard afterwards
20:14so yeah
20:14as mentioned earlier
20:16the dungeon of doom are falling apart
20:17and we should all be very very happy.
20:24Reggie Wyde of the Green Bay Packers
20:26showed up on Nitro a few weeks ago
20:28and it was announced
20:29that he would face Steve McMichael
20:30at slamboree.
20:31This week on Nitro
20:32was the first time
20:33we saw Reggie get physical
20:34and you could instantly tell
20:36what kind of match we were in for
20:38at the pay-per-view.
20:39Whereas Kevin Green
20:40wasn't absolutely awful in the ring
20:42and while Mongo
20:43well, Mongo gets a pass
20:45because it's Mongo
20:45Reggie Wyde just didn't look
20:47all that good in the ropes
20:48but you know
20:49much respect for getting in there
20:51on pay-per-view
20:52and giving it a shot
20:52I'm sure the payoff made it worthwhile.
20:55You hope for something good here
20:57but common sense kicks in
20:58and you realize
20:59that this is gonna be bad.
21:01Steve McMichael is still learning himself
21:03so Reggie didn't have a ring general
21:06in there to go through the steps
21:07but I'm sure this match was rehearsed
21:09quite a lot before slamboree.
21:1115 minutes.
21:1315 fucking minutes.
21:15Tons and tons of time wasting
21:16to start us off.
21:18Reggie pushes Mongo
21:19into the corner
21:20after the initial lockup
21:21Mongo comes back
21:22with a hammerlock
21:23and a push afterwards
21:24and the two men then
21:25run into each other
21:26with shoulder blocks
21:27but neither man goes down.
21:29this results in both guys
21:30circling the ring again
21:32and wasting more time.
21:33Another side headlock
21:35another shoulder block
21:36more time wasting follows
21:38fuck's sake Reggie
21:39let's see that dragon rana
21:40or corkscrew moonsault
21:42and stop teasing us.
21:43Side headlock
21:44shoulder block
21:45and
21:48okay that was good
21:49you got me Mongo.
21:51Now
21:51it begins going downhill rapidly here
21:54and apparently the guys were told
21:55to hurry the match
21:56and go home early
21:57but because the match was worked out
21:59step by step
22:00and because Mongo and White
22:01weren't comfortable
22:02deviating from the script
22:04they decide to not listen to the order
22:06and they kept going
22:07and it was absolutely horrible.
22:10I'm not sure when they get the order
22:11but it does happen.
22:13Mongo draws the scrimmage line
22:15in the ring
22:15and this gives us more time wasting.
22:17Mongo then takes his opponent out
22:19while thinking he was very smart indeed
22:21but when we see the same spot again
22:23Reggie leapfroads over Mongo
22:25and we see one of those top-notch clotheslines
22:27Jesus Christ.
22:28Mongo decides to leave the ring
22:30and head to the back
22:30but he's stopped by Reggie's teammate
22:32Gilbert Brown
22:33nose tackle for the Packers
22:35Reggie then hits a dropkick
22:37and honestly
22:38I've seen worse
22:39it's not graceful or anything
22:40but I've definitely seen worse
22:43rocky my fate
22:45more stalling
22:46more walking around the ring
22:47Mongo applies an arm bar
22:49that stays in way too long
22:51and Reggie gets out with
22:53another one of these
22:55and I'm pretty sure
22:56afterwards is when
22:57Mark Curtis sends the message
22:58to Mongo to wrap the matchup
23:00and go to the finish
23:01but that doesn't happen.
23:03Reggie instead applies
23:04another side headlock
23:05and Mongo forces a rope break
23:07before clipping the Minister of Defense
23:09Mongo then twists away
23:11at Reggie's ankle
23:12and he does some damage to the leg
23:14but he also misses a leg drop
23:16and I'm losing patience
23:17with this match
23:18the crowd have even died down
23:20and the novelty of the match
23:21has definitely worn off
23:23another side headlock
23:24this time it ends with a Reggie White crossbody

23:37Mongo gets out with a low blow
23:39he tells fans at home
23:40that he just heard the church bells ringing
23:42and Big Steve makes Reggie crawl
23:44to the bottom rope
23:45after locking in a half-boston crowd
23:47I'm gonna breeze through the rest of this guys
23:50trust me I'm doing you a favour
23:51Reggie throws Mongo off the top rope
23:54Reggie also hits an okay looking clothesline
23:56followed by an atomic drop
23:57that also looked fine
23:59after a brief fight on the outside
24:01Reggie hits his splash in the middle of the ring
24:03but Debra distracts the referee
24:05Mongo grabs his magical briefcase
24:07he gets it taken away by Gilbert
24:09but then Double J runs down with another briefcase
24:13and he tosses it to Mongo
24:14this is like double donks at Wrestlemania 9
24:17Reggie gets whacked and Mongo wins the match
24:19why Double J would help Mongo after the US title match
24:22I have no idea
24:24but the match ends with mercy
24:26and I'm sorry for putting you all through that
24:28I'm not a big football guy but I know Reggie was one of the greats
24:32certainly he was a big name and a respected man in the sport
24:36but he and Mongo put on one of the worst pay-per-view wrestling matches in WCW history here
24:41a painful 15 minutes for wrestling fans
24:44but in terms of marketing
24:45it probably paid off
24:47Eric Bischoff stated himself that if he had the option of going back and cancelling the match
24:52he wouldn't do it
24:53he actually would have done it again
25:00Main event time
25:01another WCW vs NWO battle
25:04the original wolf pack consisting of Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Six
25:08taking on Roddy Piper, Ric Flair and another football player, Kevin Green
25:12this one really started when Nash cut one of the best promos of his career
25:17calling out old timers and legends of the business who left potholes in the road for the younger guys to
25:22travel on
25:23pushing the message that tradition bites
25:25the young lions of the NWO were not only interested in filling the potholes
25:30but they also wanted to wreck the tradition of WCW and bring in a new era
25:35and to kickstart that new era the legends of WCW and the old timers had to get taken out
25:41this is Ric Flair's return match as mentioned earlier but it's also Scott Hall's first
25:46hell of ice match since returning to WCW from his stint in rehab
25:49Roddy Piper's in here because he's been feuding with the NWO ever since showing up at Halloween Havoc 96
25:55and Kevin Green must have had a few free dates and WCW decided to add him to the main event
26:01he certainly doesn't fit in with the story Kevin Nash and the NWO were telling in the run up the
26:06slamboree
26:07but we are in North Carolina tonight so he fits in as a babyface
26:11this is also a no disqualification match as announced by Nash this week on Nitro
26:17Piper was also attacked at the end of Nitro this past week by the NWO and he sold his hip
26:23so it's likely that the injury is gonna come into play during this six-man tag with all due respect
26:29to Flair and Piper you can see why the NWO were so popular just by watching their entrance they were
26:35much more fresh and much more cool as they made their way down to the ring whereas Piper and Flair
26:41relied on their legacies and rightfully so too these guys are true wrestling legends and with Flair
26:48wrestling in Charlotte tonight you can bet the fans would get behind the nature boy they go absolutely
26:54nuts for his entrance it's great to see but the NWO really did represent a change in world championship
27:01wrestling whether you want to admit that or not. Sixx said to Flair that he's nothing but a fraud who
27:09ripped off Buddy Rogers and the fans get excited when Flair and Sixx start the match off, we see a
27:15side
27:15headlock and a shoulder block for fucks sake but look at the difference here when two true pro
27:21wrestlers do the spot and they put a lot of snap into it, it looks great. Sixx gives Flair a
27:26wrestling
27:26lesson by performing a hip toss afterwards but he ends up taking a chop after doing the Flair strut,
27:31Flair pays with a ridiculous kick from Waltman and man, I said on reliving the war that I wasn't really
27:38excited for this match but the crowd are great here and I'm already enjoying this, maybe it's because I
27:44watched Mongo vs White beforehand though. Flair takes a few chops in the corner before delivering a few of
27:50his own, Sixx gets rocked with a back body drop and Rick starts nature in the ring and it gets
27:55Hall all
27:55fired up. Hall decides he's seen enough and he tries attacking the nature boy but Rick takes out Scott
28:01and Sixx, he then chops big Nash and Nash doesn't go down, instead he looks at Flair like he just
28:08pissed in
28:08his cereal. I can't say this enough, the Carolina audience is absolutely brilliant here, Rick has
28:15him in the palm of his hand and the Wolfpack are playing along perfectly, watch this match just to
28:20see the atmosphere in the arena. Big Sexy waits it out and Scott Hall gets tagged in, we see a
28:26little
28:26more styling and profiling and then Kevin Green of the North Carolina Panthers gets tagged in and it's
28:32another huge pop. Kevin's feeling it tonight, he's all excited and Scott Hall isn't quite sure what to
28:38make of this, so he spits on Green before tagging in the big man. Nash is the man who made
28:44this match
28:44mean something through the promos he cut on Nitro, people don't like giving Kevin Nash credit for
28:50anything it seems, but I'll give him all the credit in the world for doing the good mic work in
28:54the run
28:55to this main event. Big Sexy and Green push each other around before Nash hits a knee strike and
29:00he brings Green to the corner shouting how about that football boy in between elbow smashes and here
29:06I'm just gonna play the audio from the show here, listen to the crowd. Big Sexy gets back on his
29:19feet
29:19and Green pulls off a jumping clothesline, Green then nails Nash with a body slam and Nash goes to the
29:25outside to set up a sneak attack. Only problem here is Kevin Green knowing an ambush when he sees one,
29:30Six and Hall get taken out and the NWO look like absolute chumps here, Kevin Green is having a lot
29:36of fun. The Wolfpack regroup on the outside and they change battle plan, Scott Hall gets in the ring and
29:42he calls out the hot rod, Piper gets in the ring, Hall makes fun of Roddy and he slaps his
29:47taped up leg and
29:48hip only to get slapped right back in the face, Scott's a little taken back but he goes for a
29:53lockup and he
29:54brings it to the corner where Piper turns it around and we see a ton of strikes from the hot
29:59rod,
29:59Piper then mocks Scott and Scott looks on as if to say is that right motherfucker and Scott tries to
30:06go after Roddy one more time but a knee lift sends the bad guy down, Hall looks at his corner
30:11and he
30:11says that's it, Scott's gonna try and finish Roddy for good and Piper gets brought to the NWO corner for
30:18a beatdown but the hot rod fights off every member of the Wolfpack, Hall gets taken out with a swinging
30:23neckbreaker but the NWO get a chance to fight back when Six takes Piper out from behind, Piper is
30:30supposed to have an injured hip but the whole leg is being targeted, Hall mocks Flair who watches on from
30:36the apron and Scott goes for a figure 4 on Piper but the hot rod kicks Scott away, Roddy then
30:42goes to the
30:42corner for a tag, I hope that was intentional, he then turns around and the nature boy gets tagged
30:47back into the match, the nature boys adrenaline overflows as he takes out all three NWO members
30:53but Hall puts an end to that with a thumb to the eye, gets him every time, we see the
30:58corner bump,
30:59Flair rushes up to the other turnbuckles but Hall catches slick Rick and we see the fall away slam,
31:05Rick gets sent to the outside and when Roddy Piper tries to help his teammate, Six attacks him, this leads
31:10the green running over for the save but Nosh ends up hitting Rick with a big boot when Randy Anderson
31:15sends the babyfaces back to their corner, Big Nosh tags in and he hits snake eyes on Flair,
31:21Hall lends a hand from the outside to keep Nosh in the driver's seat and there's a hush in the
31:25arena
31:25as Kevin lands a sidewalk slam. The NWO then take turns at punishing Flair with Hall hitting a corner
31:32clothesline and Six hitting a bronco buster and the crowd lets Six know what they think of him as Flair
31:37continues to get destroyed, Rick then fights back and Six takes a forearm to the back, this didn't look
31:43too good and it's strange that they done the same spot again afterwards. Hall and Piper get tagged in
31:49but the referee does not see the babyface tag, Anderson tries to send Piper back to his corner
31:55but he gets punched instead and then the match breaks down and everyone hits the ring for a brawl.
32:01Nick Patrick, the former NWO referee, comes out to check on Anderson and the ring clears out until
32:07we only have Hall and Flair inside the ropes, Flair gets the better of Scott but Nash hits Flair from
32:13the apron and Scott sets up the outsiders edge, Rick counters with a figure 4 while Kevin Green
32:19stops Nash from breaking the hold, Piper then locks in the sleeper on Big Sexy and Green takes out Six
32:25with a running powerslam, the outsiders are locked in submission moves with nowhere to go and no one to
32:31save them, Green pins Six, Hall's shoulders are also on the mat, Nick Patrick counts to three and it's all
32:38over, the babyfaces win and the crowd goes crazy, WCW just defeated the NWO at Slamboree, the heels are
32:45left let out in the middle of the ring as Flair, Piper and Green walk back up the entrance way,
32:50and the
32:51show ends with the babyfaces celebrating and the crowd still going nuts.
33:00I'd forgotten how fun the Slamboree 1997 main event was, I'm sure many will disagree and I'm sure the
33:07reviews online bring up work rate and all that shit but I'd only ever seen this match once beforehand
33:13and I had a blast watching it again. I mentioned earlier that I wasn't looking forward to this main
33:18event and I was wrong to expect a poor showing here, it isn't a technical wonder but the crowd make
33:25it so much fun and everyone who worked the match played their role perfectly, a good main event
33:30that surprised me a lot. Regal vs Dragon I thought was fantastic too, if you only watch a few matches
33:36from this show, check out the opener in the main event. All in all, Slamboree 97 was decent, you have
33:43the Ming vs Benoit match too that's pretty fun to watch, the Steiners match wasn't bad neither in the
33:48rest, but in comparison to the world wrestling federation's cold day in hell pay per view,
33:55I personally think that Slamboree 97 was a much better show from start to end. I do recommend you
34:02check out the main event though if you simply want a fun 6 man tag and also, it's good for
34:07those who
34:08want to see how a hot crowd can make all the difference to a wrestling match. I hope you enjoyed
