Welcome back to Pilot Savvy Tech Tuesday! In this episode, I walk you through how I resolved a repeat USB issue that disrupted my DA-50RG flight in X-Plane 12 from Gulfport, MS (KGPT) to Lakeland, FL (KLAL).

I'll play back the first part of the sequence so you can see exactly where the problem was encountered, then walk you step-by-step through the repair process that finally put this recurring issue to rest. If you've ever had a USB device drop out mid-flight in X-Plane 12, this one's for you!

In This Video:

00:00Hello and thank you for tuning in to Pilot Survey Tech Tuesday video.
00:04In this episode, we're going to address an issue that was encountered by the last leg of the flight from
00:10Gulfport, Mississippi to Lakeland, Florida, Central Florida.
00:17The flight was delayed because of an issue with the multifunction display.
00:23And it did cause a significant delay that affected the flight.
00:29So what I'm going to do on this one here is address the issues and that hopefully finally fixed it,
00:36resolved it.
00:37It involves the USB connections the way I had them set up.
00:43My name is Chris. Let's get started.
00:53Okay, so we're going to pick up where we left off here at the Gulfport flight.
01:03And this will have been the first stage of the first segment of the flight, the start-up taxi and
01:10run-up.
01:11But as you'll see, we ran into some problems.
01:14So I'm going to go ahead and just let that play.
01:23And you'll see how it unfolded.
01:25And once this is done, then we'll go from there and I'll show you what I did to resolve the
01:32issue.
01:39Okay, so here's what's happening.
01:42This has stopped again.
01:46So I know...
01:47Don't let me go flight plan again.
01:50All right, so I just lost it where...
01:56So there's something quirky going on with this display.
02:03So, fortunately we have a chart.
02:05We're not going to be able to depend on this.
02:08Except the flight plan is in the system.
02:15This is going to be a tricky one.
02:17I just went around a full loop.
02:19Because I can't activate the flight plan.
02:24And let's see if I can do it from here.
02:27Flight plan.
02:30Okay, I think I can.
02:33Because this is hung up.
02:35This is clearly hung up.
02:37Oh, there you go.
02:38Flight plan.
02:39Yeah, I'll do it this way.
02:41And then I'll check out that later.
02:45So, when we're ready to activate the flight plan, I'll just go here.
02:50So, this is in-up.
02:53This is not going to show us anything.
02:55The multi-function display on my panel.
03:01It is functioning.
03:02Because it is responding to the buttons.
03:05And that is great.
03:08Speaking of, I'm going to go ahead and put the altitude that we're going to cruise at.
03:135,500 feet.
03:16At this point there, it was just, I launched the flight in a way.
03:21But then I went back and fixed the issue.
03:24And I think it's a primitive fix.
03:27So, initially, I had one of the multi-function display plugged into the front port.
03:38One of the USB ports on the front of the computer.
03:42It ended up there because of the issues I was having with the USB hub.
03:51And over a period of time, I was playing kind of whack-a-mole, so to speak, with the hubs
04:00and the adapters.
04:02So, as you see, the adapter, it actually has a port for two HDMI ends and one USB out.
04:14And that initially was plugged into the front of the computer, the flight sim computer.
04:22And the two, I ended up separating the two HDMI ends and two separate adapters.
04:31And I switched backwards and forth from the hub to hub.
04:40I'm thinking, okay, it's the hub that's going to make the difference.
04:44So, I have, as you may recall from some other videos, if you saw them, I have two hubs.
04:52I have one is USB hub one and the other USB hub two, both the 10-port hubs.
05:00And I've had them for some years and they've served me well.
05:04But I think the issue is I had so many things plugged into them, drawing so much power that it
05:09was intermittent.
05:10And that may have accounted for some of the issues I was having with the USB connections.
05:18So, what I did is I actually removed the connections from the front of the hub.
05:28I think I had one at that point.
05:30I had one plugged into the power USB.
05:34And I had the other one plugged into the front of the PC.
05:39And in the end, I actually plugged both of them into the rear of the USB 3-port and the
05:50rear of the PC.
05:53After I did that, I ran an extensive check there.
05:56I didn't go fly a long flight, but I started it up and I let it sit there.
06:01And I actually let the plane burn through like just sitting on the ground with it running.
06:07Because that's when it happened, as you may have seen on some of my videos, while I'm taxiing out.
06:12So, I ran it more than what it would have been, just flying a short flight.
06:19So, I did that two days in a row.
06:22And not constant, but, you know, I tested one day, shut it down.
06:26And a couple times, you know, I spent over a two-day period shutting down, bringing it back up.
06:33And I was not able to duplicate the issue anymore.
06:35So, I think that's actually what resolved it when I plugged the USB adapters into the back of the PC.
06:47If you found this useful, go ahead and give me a thumbs up.
06:52And if you have any questions or comments, go ahead and leave a comment and any suggestions there.
07:00If you've encountered the same thing and you want to share it, go ahead and share it.

07:10My name is Chris.
07:12Thank you for tuning in.
07:13Bye now.
