00:02Having two portaloos and sanitary bins at a work site shouldn't be news, but toilets
00:09on construction sites are hit and miss.
00:12Sanitary bins and sanitary products provided, but you're lucky if you get a portaloos on
00:17some sites.
00:18Electrician Laney Morgan says facilities vary, and where they are limited, workers
00:24have to leave the site.
00:25Which then obviously disrupts the workflow of the day.
00:29She says it can be difficult as an apprentice to raise the issue.
00:33Providing an extra toilet is an additional site cost that pays for itself in productivity.
00:39So the cost of having labour leave to have to go to the bathroom and come back, versus
00:43the cost of having a toilet here, I think it's a no-brainer to have a toilet to serve the
00:48girls.
00:49Under WorkSafe ACT's code of practice, employers are legally required to provide clean, accessible
00:56facilities that meet the needs of every worker.
00:59But it's a cost that's often cut.
01:01I think commercial are making more of an effort, but residential is hard because often the
01:08margins are smaller.
01:09Master Builders ACT says it's working to change site culture through its Level the Site
01:14program.
01:15That works with employers to look at the whole workplace experience, including making sure
01:20you do have those sanitation facilities, because it's safer and more productive.
01:24It would be nice if it was not even a conversation.
01:26It should be the norm.
01:28We make up half the population, we should be in construction.
01:30We need more labour, right?
01:32Building change.
