00:16Pakistan is caught in a difficult balancing act.
00:20On one side is Saudi Arabia, a key defense partner with whom Islamabad has deep strategic
00:27ties.
00:27On the other is Iran, Pakistan's important neighbor, whose relationship Islamabad does
00:34not want to damage.
00:35And now, the escalating Saudi-Houthi conflict is putting that balance under serious pressure.
00:43A Pakistani official has reportedly put it bluntly, Islamabad wants to keep a low profile
00:49in the conflict because Pakistan's own stakes are high.
00:53It does not want to spoil relations with Iran.
00:56And that explains Pakistan's current strategy.
01:00Islamabad has reportedly passed Saudi warnings to Tehran, urging Iran to restrain the Houthis,
01:06while at the same time, Pakistan is pushing for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy.
01:12Pakistan's foreign ministry has also made its position clear.
01:17Spokesman Sajjad Haider Khan said Pakistan has consistently opposed escalation and advocated
01:24restraint, dialogue and diplomacy.
01:26But there is a major complication.
01:29Pakistan has defense agreements with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and those commitments reportedly
01:35treat an attack on one member as an attack on all.
01:40That means Islamabad's room for maneuver could become much smaller if the conflict spills directly
01:46onto Saudi territory.
01:48Pakistan's defense minister, Khwaja Asif, has warned there is no ambiguity.
01:54If there is serious spillover into Saudi territory, the defense pact could potentially be activated.
02:01But for now, Pakistan is drawing a very clear line.
02:05Pakistani sources say any involvement would be limited to defending Saudi territory, not sending
02:13Pakistani troops into Yemen, and not joining retaliatory strikes against the Houthis.
02:19So Pakistan's message appears to be, support Saudi security, but avoid a direct war.
02:26For Pakistan, the challenge is keeping its defense commitments to Riyadh, without being dragged
02:32into a wider conflict that could damage its relationship with Tehran.
02:37And as the Saudi-Houthi confrontation continues to escalate, Pakistan's diplomatic balancing act
02:44could become increasingly difficult.
