01:14Yet time has not dimmed the honor of that day
01:18when our country came face-to-face with true evil.
01:24At 8.20 a.m. on a cloudless Tuesday morning,
01:29a beautiful day it was.
01:33American Airlines Flight 77 took off 25 miles from here,
01:39bound for Los Angeles.
01:42On board were three 11-year-old students
01:46heading on a cross-country field trip,
01:50a father and a mother with their two young daughters,
01:53bound for international adventure,
01:56and a flight attendant whose mind was elsewhere.
02:01She had just learned that she was expecting her first child
02:05and was so excited to tell her mom and dad.
02:11Here at the Pentagon,
02:12a Navy airman had just gotten off the phone
02:15with his 10-year-old son.
02:18A secretary was celebrating her 46th birthday.
02:23So happy she was.
02:25A sergeant major was chatting with some colleagues
02:29he had hosted for a dinner party over the weekend.
02:33At 9.37 a.m., every single one of those people
02:37and every person at that sergeant major's party
02:42was murdered by terrorists
02:44who flew Flight 77 straight into this legendary building.
02:50It is indeed a legendary building.
02:56So many wars have been won from this building.
03:02With the events of that morning,
03:052,977,
03:09beautiful souls were ripped from our world
03:12and many more died in the weeks and years
03:16after horrible, grotesque injuries.
03:23So many were sustained.
03:26Today, we renew the sacred oath
03:29that we first swore in their names
03:33a quarter of a century ago.
03:36We will never, ever forget.
03:43That's why we fight today.
03:47We don't have a choice.
03:49There can only be victory.
03:51We fight hard.
03:52We fight to win.
03:54We will always remember the victims
03:56and the families of September 11th, 2001.
04:01Very famous date, unfortunately.
04:08And it started out as such a beautiful day.
04:11We will honor their lives.
04:14We will cherish their beautiful memories.
04:17And we will protect this country
04:19and its freedoms for every future generation.
04:25We will protect it like never before.
04:28For anyone who lived it,
04:30no words can do justice to the anguish of that day.
04:35After the first plane hit the North Tower
04:38of the World Trade Center,
04:41Patrick Danai left a message
04:44to comfort his beautiful wife, Mary,
04:48letting her know he was safe inside his office
04:50on the South Tower's 90th floor.
04:55Mary was eight months pregnant
04:57and playing with their two young daughters
05:00when she heard Patrick's voice.
05:03She loved him so much.
05:06She called back, turned on the TV,
05:10the line rang,
05:11and then it went completely dead.
05:14Very unusual, she felt.
05:19Mary fell to her knees as she watched
05:22United Flight 175 explode by her husband's office.
05:28She saw it right by the office.
05:31She knew exactly where the office was.
05:33Right by the office.
05:37Seven floors up,
05:40Shimmy Begelsisen laid down on the carpet
05:44by his desk to escape the smoke.
05:47It was horrible,
05:50surrounded by photos of his beautiful five children.
05:54He was on the phone with his wife, Miriam,
05:58praying to God when the television showed
06:01her the dreadful image.
06:05Things were happening that she couldn't imagine.
06:08The South Tower was collapsing
06:12with her husband,
06:13and she loved him so much inside.
06:17Free people must never avert their eyes
06:21from such hideous cruelty.
06:26We cannot forget that moment of immense and horrible evil
06:36that took place in this world,
06:39bent on the destruction of all that is good.
06:43But this morning, we also remember
06:47how America responded to that wickedness
06:51when days like 9-11,
06:53we learn what a country is truly made of.
06:58We're learning right now what we're made of,
07:00and we have to be strong,
07:02and we have to be smart.
07:05And Americans are made of a goodness and spirit
07:08that can transcend any earthly force.
07:12And that's what we're doing
07:14better than anyone else has ever been able to do it
07:17because we are sustained by a supreme strength,
07:22far more powerful than steel alone.
07:26Aboard Flight 93 in the skies over Pennsylvania,
07:31a brave flight attendant,
07:32boiled water to fight back.
07:36A loving father from New Jersey,
07:39Todd Beamer,
07:39asked a telephone operator in Illinois
07:43to join him in the Lord's Prayer.
07:45Thy kingdom come,
07:47thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
07:51And then he said his last words,
07:56let's roll.
07:58Today, as we remember the many lives lost on 9-11,
08:03we also give thanks for the countless lives saved
08:08by the immortal heroes of Flight 93.
08:13In those harrowing days after the attacks,
08:17we saw the authentic spirit of our nation.
08:23We were all New Yorkers that day,
08:27every one of us.
08:28we were all New Yorkers.
08:31But we were also all Americans.
08:34We were all family.
08:36We were all patriots.
08:38The enemy might destroy
08:40what American hands had built,
08:42but we could not touch
08:44the fight and the fire
08:46and the love
08:48in our great American hearts.
08:52At the Pentagon on September 12th,
08:55General James Jackson ordered up
08:58the largest flag
08:59in the military's collection
09:02and they think
09:04in the military's history.
09:06First responders climbed to top the walls
09:09and hung it next to the gaping holes
09:12in this building
09:14as a symbol of American defiance.
09:17This morning,
09:18that same flag is here.
09:19to my right for the first time
09:23since 2001,
09:25along with three firefighters
09:28who raised it,
09:29Joseph Morabito,
09:32Scott Morgan,
09:34and Carl Saalberg.
09:37Please stand.
09:5125 years after the attacks,
09:53we know the world
09:54will never return
09:56to the way it was at that time.

10:15before the Pentagon was hit,

10:23came crashing into our lives
10:27before we saw
10:28what took place
10:29in Pennsylvania.
10:31Innocence is expecting
10:33the future to be good
10:36because you have not yet
10:38really been tested.
10:41We've been tested many times.
10:43We're being tested today.
10:44And we're winning that test
10:46very handily.
10:48Faith is still believing
10:50in that future,
10:51even after you have seen
10:53the absolute worst,
10:55things that you never thought
10:56possible to see.
10:58In the generation
11:00since 9-11,
11:01American sons and daughters
11:03have traveled
11:03to the darkest corners
11:05of the earth
11:06and done battle
11:07with a shadowy enemy
11:09so that our children
11:11might once again
11:12know carefree days
11:13and cloudless skies.
11:16For 25 years,
11:18our best and bravest
11:19have kept America safe.
11:22And today,
11:23we salute every member
11:24of the United States military
11:26who served
11:27in the war on terror.
11:30It is a war
11:32on sick,
11:34horrible terror.
11:37We salute our first responders
11:39and law enforcement,
11:41and we love them.
11:42And we salute
11:44the service members
11:45working right now
11:46to ensure the world's
11:48number one sponsor
11:49of terror,
11:51the Islamic Republic
11:53of Iran
11:55will never,
11:57ever have
11:58a nuclear weapon.
12:08A generation after 9-11,
12:11we also know
12:12that the final response
12:14to those atrocities
12:16and the ultimate victory
12:17over the perpetrators
12:20will not be found
12:23on a foreign battlefield.
12:25It's right here
12:26in the hearts
12:27of families
12:28like Tara
12:29Stackpole's.
12:32Tara's husband,
12:34Timmy,
12:35was a great firefighter,
12:38even a legendary one.
12:40After surviving
12:42a five-alarm fire
12:43in Brooklyn
12:43that burned 40%
12:45of his body
12:45in 1998,
12:49he spent three years
12:50recovering,
12:51learned to walk again,
12:52and returned to the job.
12:54That's all he wanted to do.
12:56He just wanted
12:56to fight fires.
12:58He said,
12:59the greatest high
13:00you can ever get
13:01in life
13:02is by helping someone
13:03and making a difference,
13:05especially when it came
13:08to his profession,
13:10a dangerous profession
13:12at that.
13:13On September 11th,
13:15the New York Daily News
13:17carried a story
13:18announcing his promotion
13:19to captain
13:20in the New York City
13:21Fire Department.
13:22He was so proud.
13:23His wife,
13:24his family,
13:25was so proud.
13:28Captain Stackpole
13:29said goodbye to Tara
13:31and their five beautiful
13:33children that morning.
13:35And when the planes hit
13:36a short time later,
13:38he responded,
13:38leading a team
13:39into the unbelievably
13:44unusual sight
13:46of a South Tower
13:48that was burning.
13:50They lost their lives
13:52when the towers fell.
13:54Somehow, Tara found
13:55the strength
13:56to be a rock
13:57not only for our kids
13:58but for the countless
14:01members of a very grieving
14:04fire department.
14:05So many people
14:07were grieving.
14:08They were devastated
14:09like never before.
14:12And in the years
14:13that followed,
14:13she raised those children
14:15to know, love,
14:16and follow the example
14:17of their dad
14:19who just was not there
14:21with them any longer.
14:22Today, their son Kevin
14:25is a Navy veteran
14:26and a brave one at that.
14:29He's had his moments.
14:30They were very,
14:32very big.
14:34Perhaps not like his father,
14:35but they were very big
14:37and very proud.
14:38And everyone's very proud
14:40of Kevin.
14:41He served in Iraq
14:43and is raising four beautiful
14:45children of his own.
14:47Their son, TJ,
14:50became a captain
14:51in the Marines
14:52after graduating
14:53from the U.S. Naval Academy.
14:56Brian is raising two kids.
14:58Caitlin is raising three,
15:00including a 10-year-old
15:01named Timmy.
15:02And Brendan is a proud member
15:04of his dad's old company,
15:07Fire Department New York Rescue 2.
15:11That's quite a company, too.
15:13I grew up in New York.
15:14I can tell you
15:15that's quite a company.
15:18The Stackpole family
15:19is here today.
15:20Tara, Kevin, TJ,
15:22Brendan, Caitlin,
15:23and Timmy, please stand.

15:41He's looking down on you.
15:43He's very proud of you.
15:47No one can ever prepare
15:49for a day like 9-11,
15:52but we can always choose
15:53to be the kind of nation
15:55the world saw
15:56in those days after.
15:59We can build families
16:01like the Stackpoles.
16:03We can raise our children
16:04to know that their country
16:06is good,
16:07that their fathers are brave,
16:09and that our flag
16:10is a symbol of justice
16:12and freedom.
16:13And we can be a nation
16:15whose heroes are not fanatics
16:20for an abstract cause.
16:23They don't even know
16:24really what they're doing,
16:27but the kind
16:28who race into buildings
16:29and give their lives
16:30on a Tuesday morning.
16:32For strangers,
16:33they've never met
16:35people
16:38they didn't know
16:39gave their lives.
16:40and we can fill the lives
16:43of our children
16:44with light and love
16:46that will sustain them
16:47against any trial
16:49and transcend,
16:50any darkness,
16:52whenever that darkness
16:54may come.
16:57as scripture tells us,
16:59the light shines
17:00and the darkness
17:01and the darkness
17:03has not overcome it.
17:07September 11th
17:09reminded us
17:09of the terrible
17:11power of hate.
17:14The 25th,
17:15the American spirit
17:16to endure
17:17and prevail
17:18and to win.
17:19And today,
17:21our country is stronger
17:22than it has ever been
17:25before.
17:26It has never been
17:28as strong
17:28as it is right now.
17:31Because of that spirit,
17:33when future generations
17:35come here
17:35in 25,
17:38100,
17:38or 250 years from now,
17:41they will stand
17:43in a nation
17:44that is free
17:45and unyielding
17:46in the face of evil.
17:48and they will still
17:50honor the heroes
17:51of 9-11,
17:532001,

17:58will erase
17:58from the memory
