00:00San Francisco beats the Rams 27-7, and of course a lot was made of the travel decision
00:09with the Rams as opposed to the 49ers, and the Rams went out there basically about 10
00:15minutes before kickoff, and they looked, I watched the first quarter, first quarter and
00:20a half, they looked sluggish to me, 49ers, I mean, you know, they just marched right
00:27down the field, and that second drive, I think, was the second drive of the game for
00:30them.
00:31Purdy was very good, super effective.
00:34They didn't score, but they kicked the field goal, but then they scored in the second quarter.
00:39He threw three touchdowns.
00:40He did throw a pick in the second quarter.
00:42He bounced back after the pick, no problem.
00:44Yeah, bounced back, threw three touchdowns, one to Debo.
00:47Yeah, Debo looked good.
00:48That was a scramble play where he's rolling to the right, about a 20-yard touchdown pass
00:53to Debo, but really what changed the game, I stayed up.
00:57I'm on four hours of sleep, was the goal line stand by the 49ers defense, so it's 17-7.
01:06It was only 10-7 at the half, right?
01:10The 49ers get the ball, they score their second touchdown on a pretty long drive, seven play,
01:1651-yard drive, touchdown, they're up 17-7.
01:19Then, the Rams have the ball, 12 play, 72-yard drive, gets stuffed on third down, then tried
01:25to get it in on fourth and goal again and got stopped.
01:28And the momentum of the game has changed right there when you get that goal line stand, and
01:33then the 49ers go 99 yards and score again, game over, 24-7.
01:40It was lights out.
01:40Props to their defense, because we look on paper at that Rams offense with Puka, who led
01:48the NFL in receptions, and Devontae Adams, who led the NFL in touchdown catches, and you
01:54wonder, and Matthew Stafford, MVP of the league last year, and you wonder how you're going
01:59to stop him, but the 49ers defense came up huge.
02:02Well, Stafford just could not get in a rhythm all night.
02:05He just seemed off and just kind of jumpy.
02:08They all seemed off.
02:10And the Niners were just efficient.
02:12I mean, Christian McCaffrey split the rushing with Kaelin Black, the rookie.
02:16So they churned up 174 rushing yards, and Purdy was really good.
02:21He chipped in a little bit of rushing as well.
02:23They also did a great job on Myles Garrett.
02:26Myles Garrett was a ghost.
02:27It was Trent Williams.
02:28He might as well not have even made the trip.
02:30That's why Trent's going to Hall of Fame.
02:32He had as much in the box score as we did.
02:34He had zeros across the board, and late in the game, he was on the sideline.
02:37Happened to him less than 10 times in his career, and he's had zero pressures.
02:43Props to Trent Williams and their game plan.
02:46Trent was getting help, too, though.
02:47Those guys were taking shots at him, and then Trent would pick him up.
02:50He threw a lot of short passes, middle screens.
02:55Kyle Shannon's a brilliant play caller.
02:57Props to the Niners for that performance.
02:58I'm not going to bury the Rams after one game.
03:01I think a chunk of it has to be chalked up to the fact that they tried to stay on
03:05West Coast time, fly in, play the game.
03:08They clearly weren't acclimated, and I think they'd come home and face the Giants.
03:13I'm going to treat that as a late preseason game for the Rams.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Well, yeah, because they don't even play anybody in their preseason.
03:21Right.
03:21So I'm just going to be like, you know what?
03:22I think the Rams are going to bounce back in week two.
03:24I mean, it stinks to lose the vision game right out of the box,
03:28but the Niners are just the better team, and I think that they had a better travel plan
03:33for the Australia travel.
03:34They have, obviously, extra time off.
03:36Then they play the Dolphins at home in their home opener.
03:38Right.
03:38Then they play the Cardinals.
03:39So they should be 3-0.
03:41I didn't watch it, though.
03:42Honestly, I only watched the first half, and then I saw the highlights this morning.
03:45I didn't think they were sluggish.
03:47I just thought they just got beat.
03:49I didn't watch it and go.
03:50I just thought they looked, I don't know.
03:52That was just my interpretation.
03:53I think it's an easy narrative to say, and I know Sean McVay talked about it afterwards,
03:56that McVay said he didn't want to use it as an excuse.
03:59Yeah.
03:59That they made that decision.
04:01He said he'd need to look inside out.
04:03He blamed it on his own coaching first.
04:05They did two years of research.
04:07Kyle Shanahan, in the regular season, beats Sean McVay more than Sean McVay beats Kyle Shanahan.
04:14Yeah.
04:15Kyle Shanahan's an excellent coach, and that's a good team.
04:18Yeah, but they're rarely held to seven points.
04:22You can't tell me the travel had nothing to do with it.
04:25I think it definitely had something to do with the outcome.
04:27I don't know.
04:28It didn't jump out at me.
04:29I mean, the Rams don't get beat 27-7.
04:31They just don't.
04:32Not with all those weapons.
04:34It didn't jump out at me.
04:36Nick Bosa being back in the lineup, though, helps big time for the San Francisco 49ers.
04:40You know what else will help them?
04:42Having Mike Evans.
04:43Yeah.
04:43Mike Evans.
04:44Every third down, it seemed like he was going to Mike Evans.
04:46He's a really good target for Brock Purdy.
04:48It's almost like he was playing tight end.
04:50He was getting a lot of shorter stuff.
04:51Yeah, and of course, he wins a jump ball in the end zone to score his first touchdown as a
04:56niner last night.
04:57And Shanahan did, and John Lynch had talked about this in the offseason,
05:01but they just want to cut down on McCaffrey's carries.
05:04So instead of giving him 22-23 a game, they want to give him 14.
05:08Sure.
05:09So that's why they went out and got Kalen Black.
05:11You want to keep him fresh throughout the season.
05:12I'm not sure that they'll go 50-50 the rest of the year, but they did last night.
05:16I mean, I think he had 450 touches last year, including the playoffs.
05:20Like, you can't keep doing that to him at age 30.
05:22Like, that's just going to grind him down.
05:26Major faux pas by me, and maybe by others, when we did our picks yesterday,
05:32I didn't have the Niners in the playoffs.
05:34I also have the Niners out of the playoffs.
05:36I got them in as a wild card.
05:38They might win the division.
05:39Look, it's one game, but...
05:41I wouldn't get too carried away with one game.
05:42Yeah, it's one game.
05:43I know, but they were 12-5 last year.
05:46I know.
05:46I kind of slept with injuries.
05:48With injuries.
05:49Sometimes you have to make tough decisions in life.
05:51Sometimes you have to leave teams off the playoff list.
05:54All right, remember a couple of months ago when Australian Joe was in town?
05:59I do, yes.
06:00And Drabby fell in love with him.
06:02He was smitten by him.
06:03And Valdez, those guys were all going out together.
06:05Yeah.
06:06He wants to chime in on the game.
06:08We got another Australian kick.
06:09Australian boots on the ground from Joe.
06:12Australian Joe.
06:13Hey, buddy.
06:14How are you, man?
06:16The Australian.
06:17The Australian.
06:18Okay.
06:18Fake on yesterday.
06:20Yeah, okay.
06:20The Australian.
06:21What time is it?
06:22I'm still confused.
06:23What time is it in Australia?
06:25It's Friday night about, I don't know, 8.30, 9, something like that.
06:29Oh, okay.
06:29So it's reasonable.
06:30Around that time.
06:30It's all right.
06:318.31.
06:32It's reasonable.
06:32Friday night.
06:33Yeah.
06:34Yeah.
06:348.30 night on a Friday.
06:35Happy Friday, boys.
06:36Let me say, the Rams, idiotic, idiotic, thinking they could go in there on 24 hours and play
06:46an NFL game with the travel time involved.
06:49I messaged Drab last night.
06:50I said it was the lock of the year.
06:53The lock of the year for the 49ers not only to win, but an alt line.
06:58And I had them at minus 9.5 on an alt line for them to win.
07:04And it's insane.
07:07Insane for them to think they could travel that distance and show up for an NFL game
07:11with that travel time.
07:12Unbelievable.
07:13Well, I mean, in fairness to them, they said they studied it for two years.
07:17They sent like 15 guys over.
07:19They checked heart rates.
07:20And maybe the kids know that study is garbage.
07:24It sounds like it's just covering your ass.
07:26They said it before the game.
07:27It is.
07:29It's insane.
07:30Like, you do it and you come back.
07:32Like, you feel like absolute garbage for a day.
07:35All right, but it's...
07:36You get it in a different way than you get it.
07:38Yeah, but...
07:39And it's worked for them when they went to London.
07:41But when it's 17-7, all right, they're trailing.
07:43It's a completely different angle.
07:45When it's 17-7 and they have the ball on the two-yard line on second down,
07:51you think that they're going to bring it to a 17-14 game.
07:54And then what happens?
07:55Kyron William gets stuffed, goes for a yard.
07:58So now it's third and one.
07:59You're on the one-yard line.
08:00You think you can punch it in.
08:01They throw a pass to Puka, get stuffed.
08:04Then Stafford tries to punch it in.
08:06Is that because they were sluggish?
08:07Or maybe the 49ers made good plays.
08:09Or maybe it was bad play calling.
08:10I'm not buying a sluggish game.
08:12They may be sluggish.
08:13I'm not buying it.
08:14I just think it's too convenient.
08:15You think their bodies are as adjusted as the Niners' bodies are?
08:18They studied it.
08:19They knew exactly what they were doing.
08:22Studies are right all the time.
08:23They could study it for a thousand years.
08:24It doesn't mean it's right.
08:26What's your percentage?
08:27What's your percentage?
08:28I really do.
08:29I think so.
08:30I'm with you, EB.
08:30What's your percentage?
08:32You discredit studies all the time.
08:35I buy into what they did.
08:37You think that they lost 80%?
08:3980%?
08:40Yes.
08:40He says 80% of the reason they lost is because of the travel.
08:45It's a massive factor.
08:46I think it was a factor.
08:47It's not traveling to London.
08:49I'll give it a factor.
08:50It's traveling multiple more time zones away from London.
08:52That's fine.
08:53I understand what happened.
08:54Here's what I think.
08:55I actually think it had a marginal impact on it.
08:57They were knocking on the door to make it a game.
08:59They had a huge impact.
08:59They slept the whole way over.
09:01They stayed on the same time zone.
09:03They just got beat.
09:04If Stafford gets in there at 17-14, a different game.
09:08You think that's comfortable?
09:09Did you see their accommodations?
09:10It's not a bed.
09:11I'm sorry.
09:12It's not a hotel.
09:13It's all laid out.
09:14Listen.
09:15I don't agree with that.
09:16I'm not saying it was the main reason that they lost, but I think it was more than marginal.
09:20I think it was a massive factor.
09:22Okay.
09:22So the team that was a four-point favor almost cut the lead to three points.
09:27Right, JP?
09:27Correct.
09:28But then you have a game.
09:29Then you have a game in the fourth quarter.
09:30They have a game, but they still weren't playing well.
09:33They just got beat.
09:34It doesn't have to be because they were tired.
09:36I never once watched that game and said, wow, he really looks sluggish.
09:39He looks tired.
09:39I watched the entire game, and I thought, the Rams look sluggish.
09:42I never thought it.
09:43I never thought it.
09:44I watched it and said, the Niners look so much better.
09:45They looked worn down the entire game and not interested.
09:47I watched it.
09:48I didn't think it.
09:49It never occurred to me.
09:50I watched it.
09:51I said, the Niners look spry.
09:53The Rams look like they're in quicksand.
09:55It was 10-7 at the half.
09:57I don't know how you thought that.
09:58I went to the end at halftime.
09:59I had a keen eye when I watched football.
10:01That's how I watched it.
10:02That's how I watched it.
10:02Last year's MVP couldn't do anything?
10:04That's not alarming to you?
10:06That didn't say, wow, they look off.
10:08Miles Garrett couldn't do anything?
10:10Right.
10:10Miles Garrett said himself he's not healthy.
10:13He said he's not healthy.
10:15He's playing at 85%.
10:16Matt Stafford threw 70 touchdown passes last year.
10:18He did nothing yesterday.
10:19I just don't think it was because he was a little tired.
10:22I just don't think that.
10:23It's not tired.
10:24It's your whole body rhythm.
10:25Your security rhythm is off.
10:26Your body's thrown off.
10:28Listen, other teams have taken that approach.
10:30I know it's an extreme doing it to Australia.
10:33I'm not blaming the loss on that.
10:35You guys can.
10:36Who cares?
10:37I could give a crap.
10:38I'm just giving you my opinion.
10:40Australia is a different beast, E.B.
10:42Australia is a different beast.
10:43It isn't Paris.
10:44It isn't London.
10:45I agree.
10:45I agree.
10:46I'm never going to go there.
10:47It's another animal.
10:49It's an animal.
10:49So how do you explain them losing to the 49ers last year?
10:53Maybe the 49ers were just better.
10:55I mean, this is a 20-point win.
10:58It's just the easiest, world's easiest excuse.
11:02They just got beat.
11:04I mean, it's a 20-point.
11:07They're four-and-a-half-point favorites.
11:09It's also the first game with nobody playing in the preseason.
11:13They get dominated by 20.
11:14They put up seven points.
11:15It's a potent offense with the MVP.
11:17Puts up seven points in the opener.
11:20The 49ers have been in Australia for the last week acclimated.
11:25Their bodies have adjusted.
11:27It's a massive flight.
11:28It's not just they're lying on a bed and, you know, the time zone difference.
11:32The wear on the body.
11:34Like, you feel like a zombie.
11:35You feel like a zombie for a few days.
11:36Yeah, but I don't think you've traveled the way they've traveled.
11:38I don't think you've.
11:39But it's still not.
11:40Tell them all the ranchers need a travel agent.
11:42It's still not your 100% comfort zone to sleep on a plane just because you, I mean,
11:46there's no way they all slept great.
11:47All I can say is I said to Drab last night, and as Jim said, put the house on the
11:51Niners.
11:52Make it an alt line of nine and a half.
11:53I'm glad you made a boatload of money.
11:55I wish I did.
11:55You cashed.
11:56I wish I did.
11:57He put a big bet on it and swung the points 13 points the other way.
12:01By the way, Shanahan's now 12-7 against Sean McVay in the regular season.
12:06Yeah, but they scored seven.
12:08Were you impressed by the Rams last night?
12:10Did you think the Rams looked good?
12:11No, but how much?
12:13Did you watch the whole game?
12:14I watched like three quarters of the game.
12:16Okay, I stayed up for the whole thing.
12:18And I'll give Brock Purdy credit and the offense credit.
12:21They were playing a good game, but I'm not going to put it on that.
12:24Part of it is game planning.
12:26Part of it, to me, part of it, to say 80% is because the travel is absurd to me.
12:31I would say marginal impact.
12:33Even the coaches wouldn't say that.
12:35Of course not.
12:37I don't know.
12:37This thing happens.
12:38Is every favorite going to win?
12:39We know that that doesn't happen.
12:41The coaches are also trying to cover their asses, too.
12:43Maybe behind closed doors, they're like, you know what?
12:44We really screwed up.
12:45We should have been there a week early like the Niners were.
12:47Yeah, you think Sean McVay is going to...
12:49That blew our doors off.
12:50We did.
12:51I can't believe people are so vicious about it.
12:53They were a 12-5 team last year.
12:55I understand.
12:55The 49ers aren't the Cleveland Browns.
12:58The 49ers are a good team.
13:00Last year, they split, and the Rams scored 65 points in two games against the Niners.
13:0565.
13:06Okay.
13:07The Rams are better than seven points.
13:10Sure.
13:11If they would have lost 24-23 or 27-24, I'd be with you.
13:16But the Rams don't score seven points.
13:18Okay.
13:19How much did they score in their opener last year?
13:22The Rams?
13:23Yeah.
13:25Last year?
13:25Hold on.
13:26So that would be 20-25?
13:28I guess you already saw it.
13:29I'm going to guess they scored more than seven.
13:32They beat Houston 14-9.
13:3314 points.
13:35Okay.
13:36Sometimes teams...
13:37And we saw this in the first game.
13:40Sometimes the offenses take a little while to wake up in the regular season.
13:45You know what?
13:46The Niners' offense looked pretty good.
13:47Didn't take them time to wake up.
13:50Came around.
13:50They looked pretty alive in that game.
13:53Ask the guys.
13:54See what the guys say.
13:55See what the guys say.
13:56They discount it.
13:57We'll agree to disagree.
13:58Ask the guys.
13:58The guys that actually played in the game.
14:00What's your percentage?
14:0180%?
14:01Like Cates?
14:02No, I don't think it's 80.
14:02I don't think it's that big.
14:03Ask the guys that played in the game.
14:04I think it was a factor.
14:06I'm not saying it was...
14:06If the guys say...
14:07Honestly, I was just off.
14:09I didn't have my mojo.
14:10I don't know what it was.
14:11Probably was a travel.
14:12Then I would say, okay.
14:14But I didn't see any evidence of it.
14:16Well, the 49ers said after the game that they felt amazing.
14:19They said that they acclimated and that they loved the approach that they had.
14:23Mike Evans was asked...
14:23That's fine.
14:24Ask the Rams players if they felt...
14:26Eric, what do you think they're going to say?
14:27They're going to throw their coach under the bus?
14:29They could say, hey, I actually felt off.
14:30We didn't...
14:30I wish we had done it a different way.
14:32You don't think a veteran would say that?
14:34I think a veteran would say that.
14:36Mike Evans was asked about the Rams showing up basically the day before, and he kind
14:40of scoffed at it.
14:41That's kind of crazy that you guys did that.
14:43Yeah.
14:44And he was on the team that won by 20 points.
14:46Yeah.
14:47So...
14:48I think travel had a pretty big impact on the game.
14:50For one of the teams.
14:51I like San Francisco in the regular season beating the Rams basically two out of every
14:56three times.
14:57Okay.
14:57That's fine.
14:59I mean, you're talking about a bunch of games before this game happened.
15:02We're talking about an independent event that happened in Australia.
15:05It's Stafford and all these guys saying...
15:07But do you think coaching's a factor?
15:09I think it's...
15:10Do you think talent's a factor?
15:11Partially, of course.
15:12All those things are factors.
15:13Yeah, but the Rams are talented.
15:14I think McVeigh botched it by having...
15:16Are the Rams more talented than seven points?
15:18I think he botched it by having Stafford try to sneak it in.
15:20Because he's not that kind of guy.
15:22Even though they were basically on the one foot line.
15:25Give it to Corum or Kyron Williams there.
15:28Kind of a weird play, but...
15:30And it wasn't a tush push either.
15:33No, it was just...
15:33It was your old-fashioned sneak.
15:35You're relying on a 37-year-old quarterback who's not really a rushing quarterback to get
15:39across the line there?
15:40I don't know if that's the greatest coaching decision.
15:45Well, we're going to agree to disagree.
15:47I don't think it was 80%, but I think it was definitely a factor.
15:50A pretty big factor.
15:52I'm with the marginal impact.
15:54I think the other things, like coaching decisions, are much bigger...
15:57They just got beat.
15:58They just got friggin' beat.
16:00I didn't watch it and think they look sluggish, but maybe I missed it.
16:04Oh, well...
16:05I watched the first half.
16:06I didn't watch the second half.
16:07Watch the highlights.
16:08It kind of depends on how you define sluggish.
16:10I mean...
16:10I define sluggish as a really good team with Hall of Fame receivers scoring seven points
16:15and a Hall of Fame quarterback.
16:17That's sluggish.
16:17Yeah, but that happens all the time in a regular season.
16:19Good teams sometimes have bad games.
16:21Some teams, but you just don't expect it with this particular team.
16:24Yeah, I know.
16:24But maybe it was just overhyped.
16:26Maybe the Rams aren't what people think.
16:28We'll see.
16:30You might be right on that, but I think they're better than seven points on a neutral floor.
16:34I'm going to guess they score more than seven next week at Hall of Fame against the Giants.
16:36I don't know.
16:37So, hold on.
16:38So, like I mentioned, the Niners play the Dolphins next, and then they play the Cardinals.
16:46The Rams, in their next three, are the Giants, like you said, they have to go to Denver,
16:51and then they have to go to Philly.
16:53And much tougher.
16:54Much tougher.
16:55Much tougher slate for them.
