00:00Sully Hall Council is facing questions over its finances after officers forecast an overspend of just under £1.5 million
00:09this year.
00:10The authority says that it's less than 1% of its budget, but it remains an overspend.
00:16The bigger concern is what happens in the years ahead.
00:19Council reports warn of significant funding shortfalls in 2027 to 2028 and 2028 to 2029.
00:29If enough savings cannot be found, officers say a Section 114 notice could be considered.
00:36Such a notice is often described as a council becoming effectively bankrupt.
00:40It would mean stopping new spending while the authority tries to regain control of its finances.
00:46Councillors have been told difficult choices could include service cuts or higher council tax.
00:52But officers also stress the immediate position is not the same as bankruptcy.
00:57The current projected overspend is around half the level seen at this point last year.
01:03And the council ultimately finished that financial year with a £7 million net underspend overall.
01:10Council leaders say the next six months will be crucial as they look for sustainable savings without reducing services to
01:19an unacceptable level.
01:21They also point to government funding arrangements and business rates as important factors shaping the financial pressures facing Solihull.
