11:21a lot of technologies are maturing right now
11:24from a hardware standpoint with wearable technology
11:28the costs to produce a device they're very cheap now
11:35they're also small enough that you can fit into something the size of an earpiece
11:40on the software side you've got things like speech recognition, machine translation
11:44these things weren't that great like 7 or 10 years ago
11:47but if you use it now it's pretty good
11:49all of these things all these technologies are maturing at the right time
11:53on top of the fact that we are much more globalized now
11:55and we every day you face a language barrier issue
11:59and so we're just like at the right time in the right moment at the right time
12:13currently it only works when you and I are both speaking
12:16but what'll be really great is when it can
12:18I can just put an earpiece in your ear and drop you off in the middle of Spain
12:21and it just picks up everything happening around you
12:24and translates it for you in real time without any need
12:27to be connected to the internet or anything like that
12:36In 2050 an old dream will come true

12:44It has always been possible for humans to be physically somewhere but mentally elsewhere
12:51however what digital technologies offer is the chance to be in two different places

13:08In this digital second life we'll try to see, feel and touch remotely
13:16talking to our loved ones won't be enough

20:02Touch is a sense that is anchored in our growth
20:05It's one of the first to develop
20:08The more coherent the information between senses

20:16In Bristol, England, engineers are working on this next stage
20:21Allowing us to feel holograms
20:26So we really see that the next point at which virtual reality is going to break down
20:30And you'll notice that it's not real
20:32Will then be when you reach out and try and interact with something
20:36So you need some kind of tactile feedback to let you know that you have or have not touched that

21:10Start simple with a cube floating in front of you
21:13And then you could reach out and touch it and feel that you have connected with it and picked it

21:18And then hopefully in the future you'll also be able to feel some kind of tactile properties
21:22Is it smooth, is it rough, is it for like sandpaper or smooth metal or plastic
21:31So we use ultrasound, so very high frequency sounds, it's too high frequency for you to hear
21:37And what we do is we fire those speakers with very specific time differences between each of the speakers
21:43So you have all of the sound waves travelling out of the device
21:46And then we focus those sound waves so that at one point all of the sound waves overlap at the
21:52same point at the same time
22:04So when a user is interacting with it, we have an infrared camera up the top
22:09Which is watching the hand and seeing what the user is doing
22:13Once we've detected that you've done an action that needs some kind of feedback, such as a button click
22:18We work out what feedback we want to create at that point in space
22:22And then our algorithms compute what ultrasound should we emit in order to create that feedback
22:28So that the sound waves overlap at a certain point in space
22:32And at that point there's enough force generated to slightly displace the surface of your skin
22:38In order to create different shapes, a line, a point, a full 2D shape or even a 3D object
22:49Soon, we'll reconstruct the sensation of touching an object
22:54But could we take someone in our arms?
22:59Moving out to actually contact a virtual hand or a virtual face
23:04And feeling that contact when you get there
23:06The aspect that makes it really powerful
23:09It's a living, breathing thing
23:11So when that moves and touches you back
23:15You really get that sort of intimate connection

27:48And so at Camp Grounded there's, we have typewriters, we have a typewriter range where people can go and get
27:53on a typewriter and write someone a letter
27:55from camp and people get letters from camp and they're like, what? This is amazing, we have kind of analog
28:00versions of all the stuff we have online
28:05Every camper has an inbox so we have a cardboard, we have 300 cardboard boxes in this massive thing and
28:11everyone has a number and you can leave people notes
28:13And then they go home and they open it up and they have notes from camp
28:16And it might sound silly but it really, it really gets people to open up and connect
28:22It's really important to use the analog to get people to realize that, you know, well, first of all, physical
28:29things somehow mean more to us
28:36The camp is favored by young urban professionals keen to shrug off the yoke of technology
28:47After I think the first, second year we started looking at the romance that was happening at camp and realizing
28:53like, you know, a majority of people here are single
28:56And so we launched this thing called Embers, which is basically creating romance around a campfire
29:02So Embers is making fun of all the online dating people are doing
29:06So we have these profiles that people fill out and they draw their picture
29:10They write, there's like a, almost a, like a fill in the blank of the things you want to do
29:15for the weekend
29:16What activities you're going to do and then there's this huge wall, they put it up
29:19And then you can leave comments on people, so then people leave comments and they go back
29:23Oh, someone, did someone comment on my Embers profile?
29:26And then there's this huge commotion over this dating app thing
29:29And it's really quite silly but it, it's taking it off the screen
29:33And then people actually go to the dance together, they meet at the campfire, they get tea at night
29:38And you see real romance happen
29:48I have a theory that's called the, the double chin blue screen face where you look down and your whole
29:53chin is blue because you're spending all of your time looking down
29:57And I want to live in a place where we're just spending more time with each other
30:04Afraid to go cold turkey?
30:07There are less radical ways to disconnect on a daily basis
30:13It's not that we should leave our phones at home and we should stop using technology altogether
30:18It's that we need to lay out the city in such a way that people have a device on them
30:24that they feel isn't pulling them away from what matters to them in life
30:28So that's just a matter of changing the design
30:31One aspect might be using it a little bit less than we use it now
30:35But the design would need to support the ideal fit or role we wanted to have in our lives

30:51We're creating product because we see the problem
30:56We have all these different shoes for different occasions but I have one computer phone that I bring everywhere because
31:03what if something happens?
31:04But it's really computer and I was like, you know, sometimes I just want a phone
31:14We are Kai and Joe and our dream is to help people appreciate the life that they're already living
31:24The life phone is created to motivate more people to go live, to take a break from your device, from
31:32your internet, from all the connected, you know, situation
31:47Once you pick up a life phone, you actually feel special, like the moment becomes special because you because you
31:53think through a thought process of okay, I'm gonna the next two hours, I'm gonna be, you know, I'm gonna
31:58be spending time with my family, I'm gonna be talking to my friends, I'm going to look at it, you
32:03know, look at what's happening around me
32:05I'm not gonna stay my screen, you make that decision, then you go live
32:11We wanted to symbolize that into an object that was designed for this one purpose
32:17It's not even really meant to be a phone that's an only phone, it's really a second phone
32:29You basically turn on the light phone from your smartphone and leave your smartphone at home and go out with
32:35the light phone
32:35And all your incoming calls will be forward to the light phone
32:38You can also set a limit or constraint in terms of who can be forward to the light phone
32:43So, you know, only your family, only important person can reach to you when you're out with your light phone
32:48But everyone else will be directing to a voice message
32:52So you have something on you that you could communicate to your family or your important, or your friends
32:59But nothing else will distract you from the moment

33:09So our sort of main philosophy behind the design was to be used as little as possible
33:15So everything from the form factor to the interface really represents that
33:19We chose the size of a credit card because it was the sort of most universal form factor
33:29So we figured that if we made it that size there would always be a place in a purse or
33:33a wallet or a pocket for the device
33:36And it wouldn't be this other form factor
33:38So we wanted the packaging to really reflect that idea of being light
33:42And to remind and inspire you to go light
33:45We like to say lack of features full of life
33:53Technology can do wonders in terms of connecting people around the world
33:57And I think that's incredibly valuable
33:59But I just want the technology I use to really respect me

34:07To connect me with someone and then disappear so that I can really enjoy them as humans

34:30In 2050 we will be in constant communication with connected objects

34:55But robots will only be accepted if we can interact with them easily
35:00That's the aim of artificial empathy and emotions which are complementary

36:22That support the values we want to promote as humans
36:26My own work and my own passion is not to replicate humans
36:30So I always felt that thinking about robots as this new creature

36:40Will enable us to maybe find more interesting paths in human-robot interaction
36:53For the robots I've designed and built there's always a few different stages
36:57First is I'm trying to think for every robot to think about a new interaction

37:03A new way to interact with the robot
37:04With Vio, the new robot
37:06We interact with it by placing things on the robot
37:10We have colorful icons that represent devices or ideas
37:13And here we thought what is the interaction of putting something on a robot and taking it away

37:23The metaphor here is you put your keys by the door
37:27This is an interaction you have with your home
37:29So if this robot is in your home
37:31Maybe you put something on the robot to interact with it
37:33And this becomes now a new interaction
37:39So with Travis, which was originally designed as a speaker
37:42You know, a music speaker-bought robot
37:45So we wanted to have this robot to be a musical companion
37:51And we studied, for example, how people think about music differently
37:55When a robot responds to it
37:58We had people listen to music on the robot without the robot responding
38:02And we had people listening to music with the robot enjoying the music
38:05Or pretending to enjoy the music
38:17And people thought the songs were better
38:19If the robot was responding to them
38:22And this sparked a whole new idea of research
38:26Which was maybe people change their mind about something
38:29Because the robot has an opinion about it
38:31Maybe the robot can become an authority figure for you
38:34About your opinions about other things
38:39Technology today gives people a lot of infinite possibilities
38:42An insane amount of information
38:44Robots could be designed to give you the same kind of rush maybe
38:47And more so, they can also do this using body language
38:51Which is very powerful
38:52By looking in your eyes, by moving forward
38:54By snuggling up to you in bed
38:56By, you know, touching your hair
38:57By putting your hand on your shoulder
39:00They can create even more of this sense of something
39:02Or somebody that cares about you
39:09Inducing emotions with a robot is something that already exists
39:12And works very well
39:14It's useful because for people who are isolated
39:17Elderly people
39:18Having a robot that is capable of inducing positive emotional reactions
39:24On a daily basis
39:25Can have an impact on quality of life
39:28At the human level
39:32This is the dream of the robot companion

42:47And they have done brain-computer interface in the past
42:49So how about if we control drones with our brains
42:52We went into the lab
42:53And he showed me moving a cube with a brain-computer interface
42:58And from there on as a kind of a software engineer computer scientist
43:03I wanted to go and see if we can take those same input signals
43:07And send them straight to a robot
43:13We use a brain-computer interface

43:17Which reads electrical signals from your brain

43:23Each person's brain wave works differently
43:25So we had to create some sort of profile
