00:04People can still answer accurately. Where were they, what were they doing, and how did they find out?
00:09What was happening in New York? For a large part of Generation Z, that question has
00:14a very different response. In 2001, some were still in a crib, others barely
00:19They were learning to walk, and many hadn't even been born yet. That's why September 11th wasn't...
00:24It's not part of their memories, but a story they learned later. But what happened?
00:28On that exact day? On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 members of Al-Qaeda kidnapped
00:33Four commercial airplanes. At 8:46 a.m., one of them crashed into the
00:38North Tower of the World Trade Center, in New York. Just 17 minutes later, at 9:03,
00:44A second plane struck the South Tower. What followed happened in a matter of minutes. At 9:59 a.m.
00:49the
00:49The South Tower collapsed that morning. Half an hour later, at 10:28 a.m., the North Tower fell.
00:55Meanwhile, another plane had crashed into the Pentagon and a fourth ended up crashing in
01:00a field in Pelsinvania. The four attacks left 2,977 people dead and marked one of the
01:06The most devastating moments in recent US history. What have been the effects?
01:11To understand the magnitude of this change, one only needs to think about something as commonplace as traveling by
01:16Before 9/11, it was possible to accompany a family member to the boarding gate and even
01:21remain inside the airport after passing through security. Today, a large part of the
01:25procedures that seem normal, baggage checks, scanners, restrictions and
01:30The security measures are part of a reality that was transformed after the
01:34attacks. In the United States, Congress created the Transportation
01:39Security Administration, known as the TSA, to assume responsibility for transportation security at the national level
01:44federal. Since then, airports have become one of the places where it is most clearly
01:49The impact that day had on daily life is evident. But the changes
01:53They were much deeper. After the attacks, the United States declared what was called the
01:58War on Terror and launched the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Those operations
02:02They transformed the political balance of different regions, redefined the priorities of the
02:07US foreign policy and had consequences that lasted for decades.
02:12It also changed the way people spoke and thought about terrorism and certain issues.
02:16Societies and communities. Muslim, Arab, or people perceived as coming from
02:21Middle Easterners were subjected to discrimination, suspicion, and racial profiling. The association
02:26The tension between certain identities and a perceived threat became more visible and, in some cases,
02:32It ended up becoming incorporated into political and social discourses that still have consequences.
02:36Therefore, understanding 9/11 means understanding part of the world context in which
02:41You grew up. Many of the current discussions about terrorism, security, military intervention,
02:47The Middle East and US foreign policy have a direct relationship with the scenario that
02:51It began to take shape after the attacks. Even some of the tensions that continue to mark
02:56The United States' relations with countries like Iran can be better understood by looking at the
03:01transformation of US politics after 9/11. It does not mean that conflicts
03:05The current events did not begin that day, but the attacks helped to build a new scenario
03:10international repercussions that still have repercussions. This year marks the 25th anniversary of that attack, and
03:15Even if you don't remember where you were that morning, its consequences are part of many things that
03:20Today, they are considered normal, from the way you go through an airport to the words you use.
03:24It is used to talk about security, terrorism, or the Middle East. That is why, 25 years later,
03:29The question isn't just where you were when the Twin Towers fell. The question
03:33It is also what world began to be built after they fell and how much of that world is still present in their
03:39life.
