They were left on a scrap of coral in the Indian Ocean — and waited 15 years for a ship that almost never came.
In 1761 a French slave ship wrecked on Tromelin. The crew built a boat, promised to return, and disappeared. About sixty Malagasy survivors stayed behind on an island with no fresh water and almost no food. They lived on turtles, seabirds and eggs, built shelters from coral, and kept a fire burning through the nights.
In 1776, only eight were still alive: seven women and a baby.
15 years. One tiny island. No rescue — until it was almost too late.
