00:00is bill o'brien the head coach boston college bill good morning
00:07hold on did i not do that hold on we have a mouse era now we can do it bill
00:12good morning
00:13hey greg how you doing doing well um i want to get to your game on saturday of course but
00:19uh first quickly perhaps you can talk us off the ledge when the patriots ledge when it comes to
00:25last night yeah absolutely you gotta get off the ledge it's a it's a 17 game season um you know
00:35the preseason is kind of it's it's a lot different than it used to be and so these guys don't
00:42really
00:42play most of the starters if if any of them play in the preseason you go out on the road
00:48that is the
00:49loudest place in the national football league um it's a tough environment you haven't really played
00:56and you know there's there's going to be mistakes that are made and i i think i not to segue
01:01this but
01:03you know we we are in the same boat when it comes to mistakes like we have to eliminate bad
01:08football
01:09that's what the patriots need to do and mike will be all over that this the next couple weeks here
01:13we we have to make better football has a lot to do with decision making in all three phases and
01:19we have to we have to eliminate you know bad football and i think they'll be harping on that
01:24bill i i understand that boston college will never be you know full of five-star blue chip recruits
01:31paying at the top of the you know the the collective with you know the number one players and you
01:37know
01:37lsu junior but it's so frustrating watching this team and seeing the pre-snap penalties and seeing
01:44things that are in the control of your roster and the coaching staff and cost you guys a game that
01:50you
01:50could have won how do you fix that yeah no that's a you're exactly right and um we we worked
01:56very hard
01:57on that um and and we we worked very hard on it this week but we have we had we
02:03had seven penalties
02:04penalties and five of them were pre-snap penalties which is absolutely ridiculous so you know you're
02:12right and and uh it's coaching it's the the focus of the players it's the uh operation of the offense
02:18because you're right you know we we moved the ball well we did a lot of good things in the
02:22game i
02:23really believe there's a lot to build on but if we don't fix that we'll be in the same boat
02:26we were
02:26last year so we we definitely have to fix that no doubt about it when when sam donald comes back
02:33you
02:33you should offer drew lock five million to be your quarterback but but but curtis i gotta tell you
02:39can i tell you a quick story though yeah so on my dad's side i have like 40 cousins and
02:45i have a
02:46cousin named dewey who's an unbelievable guy he was nicknamed dewey because uh he resembles dewey
02:52ox from stripes he's a little bit older than me and he and i have been very close for our
02:57whole lives
02:58and he loves this show all right so and i i don't even know if he's listening i think he
03:03listens to
03:04it like later in the day because he he has a night job but uh anyways he called me and
03:09he's like
03:09you know bill uh you know curtis said you can't beat rivers and so i was like dude we can
03:17beat
03:17rivers now st john's prep that might no no yeah curtis was pretty hard on you this week bill i
03:27just
03:27don't get it you're a great coach i don't understand at my whole life boston college has
03:32had this thing where they kill themselves in spots where they have games they can win i get it the
03:37refs suck that should have been a touchdown i don't even understand what the hell the review was
03:41but like i i'm watching it and it's deja vu all over again it's it's it's the same crap yep
03:49then we
03:49got to fix it this week and i i do believe you're right i mean you have every you're exactly
03:53right and
03:54so we have to that that's really we had two they had cincinnati had no turnovers they had seven
03:59penalties too but they weren't you know these pre-snap penalties that ran the ball for 250 yards a lot
04:05of
04:05that was because we had 14 missed tackles we got to tackle better we have to operate on offense
04:11better we've got to get that fixed you're exactly right about that totally agree sorry dewey uh yeah
04:16and well thank you to dewey yeah a little odyssey appreciation morning dewey um bill from from the
04:23coach perspective you brought up pre-season but can you hindsight being 2020 was it was it a mistake
04:29when it comes to mike rabel not playing these guys uh at all in the pre-season i don't think
04:36so i i
04:36think these joint practices gregor like if you i don't know if you guys went to any of those but
04:42they're very intense they're very fast um yeah you can't yeah the quarterback doesn't get hit but even
04:48but in the pre-season you're gonna you're gonna call a lot of passes where it's quick game or you're
04:53protected and really he's not going to really get hit in the pre in a real game anyway so
04:58these joint practices make up for that i really believe that so i don't i don't see that i i
05:03just
05:03think you know at the end of the game that's what the nfl is we can tell you that better
05:07than anybody
05:08i mean they're close games and you gotta you gotta make good decisions you're in you're in a you know
05:12you've got a chance to kick a field goal to go to overtime and you know that was that wasn't
05:16a good
05:16decision drake knows that and uh they'll they'll fix that but that's really it's really like five or six
05:22plays guys in that league it comes down to five or six plays and and you've got to make the
05:27right
05:27decisions on those plays bill when it comes to drake specifically though like how do you make
05:32sure that he can mentally recover from that wiggy and i were talking about at the beginning it's more
05:36of the mental errors when you look at drake may and how does he how does he do that in
05:40his second
05:41year as a starter and how does he make sure that doesn't spiral the rest of the season i think
05:45that's a
05:45big point though what you just said is that you know he's young he's young and i do believe i
05:51you know
05:52i'm very close to josh and and and dougie marone and those guys they they love him he's a mentally
05:57tough guy you know i think he's young you know he hasn't been i mean yeah he's been in some
06:02situations but you know you know really it takes a lot of experience to you know to i remember like
06:08talking to tom about early in his career and i'm not comparing i mean tom's the greatest to ever do
06:13it but like you know early in his career they played great defense you know they ran the ball a
06:18lot
06:18you know he had simple little passing game and uh you know then around oh three or oh four is
06:24when
06:24they started really you know probably opening up a little bit more and really oh seven was where we
06:30really opened it up but like you know i just think that he'll he'll come back he he's a he
06:35comes
06:35from an athletic family he's a i really like the guy i don't know him but i just watching him
06:40interviewed and things like that he's got a great great uh great demeanor and he'll be back
06:44bill you talked about you know some of these pre-snap pre-snap mistakes you talk about the
06:50situational football obviously in the patriots game but specifically for your team and and i wonder
06:57if this is something that maybe i feel like a lot of college players might not be doing how much
07:02of
07:03their own film study are they doing to prepare themselves and understand every situation that
07:09might present itself in the game so you don't have these mental mistakes not just the film they
07:15watch with you guys but being able to watch it on your own and so you'll understand what's going on
07:21yeah that's exactly right we we really try to educate them we you know we watch a lot of tape
07:27with them
07:28you know here we we meet in the morning and then we they come back at night um and so
07:34they're they're
07:35really dedicated but you have to you know wig like you know there's a way to watch tape you know
07:40i
07:40mean you can watch tape and you're watching the ball like a fan or you can watch tape relative to
07:45your position and all the little things that you're looking for and that takes time to learn i tell these
07:50guys if they take five classes at boston college this is their sixth class this is a class you know
07:55football is it's a very intricate sport that you have to really understand you know we've got great
08:01guys that really watch a lot of tape but what are they watching and so we have to make sure
08:06and how
08:06are they watching and i think that's something that we really work on every day billy i just tomorrow
08:13what it means obviously 25 years to the day from the events of 9-11 you're going to be honoring
08:18the
08:19heroic life and moments of the final way in which wells crowder chose to to save others in his final
08:24moments how are you uh approaching that game what's your message to your team and what does that mean to
08:28you and the university yeah it's it's you know obviously it's a it's a huge night for bc we we've
08:34spent time on it this week like yesterday you know talked a lot about wells how he grew up um
08:40you know
08:40the meaning of the red bandana his dad gave him that red bandana when he was six years old they
08:44were
08:44they were both volunteer firefighters which is an incredible part of the story and you know what he did
08:49on that day you know saving you know up to upwards of 18 people he had one woman on his
08:55back
08:55he carried her down and then he went back up i mean that's really what as you know that's what
09:00bc's
09:00all about it is a place that gives back um and that's the extreme example obviously and so our
09:06guys really understand what it's about it's it's it's uh cool that we're playing rutgers because
09:11obviously they have a a big connection to 9-11 and um so you know our guys really understand it
09:18and uh
09:18they can feel it on campus we got to go out there and do it you know that's the big
09:22thing we you know and
09:23i i get it if i'm watching it and i'm it's the same old bc i get it when are
09:28we going to change
09:28that you know we it's up to me it's up to the players and and that's how we're going to
09:32change
09:32people's minds we have to go do something about it bill how many different game clocks will you
09:37have running tomorrow night how about that that was ridiculous i mean that is crazy i i just i i
09:48don't
09:48know i probably should be careful i don't care i'm not careful i'm almost i'm 57 years old whatever
09:53so anyway so i i like i saw that i was like wait a minute now that game is over
09:59i mean the ball
10:00i mean it was clearly the clock was at zero but the thing is the aftermath is crazy because first
10:05western michigan was like okay we agree with the big 10 now they all of a sudden they don't agree
10:09so now now we're gonna what are you gonna go to a court of law there and like it's it's
10:14michigan's got
10:14the win you ain't getting that win so that's wild yeah all right well listen good luck tomorrow night
10:19and we appreciate you taking the time we'll talk to you again next week bill o'brien
10:23yep thank you guys
