03:02one day now to be played in full got a nod from the parliament when in srinagar what unfolded
03:10was surprising and interesting for political corridors dr faruq abdullah who's been the
03:15national conference patron former chief minister his son incumbent cm omar abdullah backed the
03:20full six stands a rendition so they stood throughout the national song that was being played and while
03:27many appreciated the national conference for that stand but it put the party at odds with congress
03:33party and they are ally partners the bjp has now targeted congress over its stand highlighting the
03:39growing differences between as they are saying the two india bloc partners i want you to take a look
03:44at this report what happened that led to such a huge political showdown over the national song of
03:50the country a song meant to unite the nation has now opened a new front in the opposition camp
04:01in srinagar national conference chief faruq abdullah and jamun kashmir chief minister omar abdullah
04:08stood in attention for the entire six stanzas of vande mataram at an event on tuesday
04:17the last stand came barely 20 days after sonia gandhi's vande mataram video went viral where she was seen
04:25objecting as the rendition went beyond the first two stanzas
04:33later congress reaffirmed its 1937 position backing only the first two stanzas at party events the party
04:41says the truncated version was adopted to protect india's unity and diversity and preserve its secular
04:48inclusive ethos the party cites tagore's advice on national song but the congress position has now put it
04:57at odds with its own ally in jamun kashmir with the granul party questioning the move to insist on the

05:41The National Conference isn't buying it.
05:44The party says the law on Vande Maatram must be respected
05:47and asked the Congress to focus on real issues.
06:21The BJP is wasting no time.
06:24The party has attacked Congress over its Vande Maatram stand.
06:27It also seized on the growing differences between the two India-block allies.
06:56Today, the Congress party stands completely sidelined on Vande Maatram,
07:01being abandoned by its own allies.
07:07From Delhi to Srinagar, Vande Maatram has exposed a new fault line in the opposition alliance.
07:14Has the National Conference's stand put Congress on back foot?
07:19And in projecting its own secular credentials,
07:22has the National Conference now appended Congress on Vande Maatram?
07:26And is the India-block's internal rift getting deeper?
07:31Bureau Report, India Today.
07:36Let's try and understand this.
07:37Now, on the panel joining us this evening is Sanju Verma,
07:41our National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
07:44Gurmehar Kaur is the spokesperson for the Congress Party.
07:47Also, we have invited from the National Conference, of course,
07:50and I'm expecting that the spokesperson of the National Conference
07:53will also join the panel because they, of course, are in the centre of attention.
07:57Gurmehar, of course, many would recognise, has been a political activist,
08:00now associated with the Congress.
08:03Both the ladies, welcome to the show.
08:05Gurmehar, let's begin with this.
08:06You're telling the National Conference,
08:08which clearly has every right to take a decision for itself on this,
08:13it's after all a national song,
08:14that you uphold the inclusive secular character.
08:17But that's what National Conference is saying,
08:19that they are doing exactly that,
08:21they're standing forth to the national song.
08:23Otherwise, the party is criticised often for being even a pro-separatist party sometimes.
08:28So, why would you then not let them have the freedom
08:31to do what all other parties are doing?
08:36With the very most basic fact here,
08:39because the DJP would like to create a controversy
08:42where the law itself creates none.
08:45No law has been broken here by anybody.
08:47National Conference chose to stand through the full rendition of Andey Matrim.
08:50The song that has followed the two stanza versions from 1937.
08:54Both positions are lawful.
08:55The new protection law,
08:57punishes insult or destruction of the song.
09:00It does not describe a compulsory stanza song for every occasion.
09:03So, two allies singing the same national song differently
09:06is not a constitutive crisis,
09:07as many might want to make it to be.
09:10It is what fluid mockery looks like.
09:12And the form of this position,
09:13there's not a fear yesterday.
09:15The first two stanza were separated
09:17on the considered literary advice of Abidmana Tegorji.
09:20And the 1937 Congress decision was taken
09:22in the presence of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Subhaf Sunderbol,
09:25Mawlana Azad and Rajendra Pasadji.
09:28Are we now being told that the BJP understands patriotism
09:31better than Tegor, Gandhi, Patel,
09:33both Azad and Rajendra Pasadji?
09:35What the BJP here is doing is much, much more revealing.
09:38It wants to convert one 50-year-old song
09:41into a loyalty test,
09:42which is BJP being the examiner.
09:44You know, this form of like political tradition,
09:47this also comes from a political tradition.
09:49But what is the Congress Party's objection?
09:52Even if let's say, okay, today in 2026,
09:54we are playing the full stanza,
09:56approved and granted or not by the parliament.
09:59Why would the Congress object to it?
10:01It's a national song.
10:03You know, there is,
10:05I will tell you,
10:05you're talking about a lot of infighting.
10:08There is no alliance crisis here, right?
10:10There is a difference of position
10:11and mature political alliances can survive differences.
10:14National Conference stood to the full rendition, right?
10:17Congress reiterated the true stanza position.
10:20It has held since 1957.
10:22You know, neither party has changed its resolution.
10:24Nobody has been expelled or censored or threatened.
10:27And no law has been broken.
10:29What I am trying to stop here
10:31is that the BJP's problem
10:32is that it thinks alliance means obedience.
10:35You know, it does not.
10:35An alliance that is a merger.
10:37In a plural country,
10:39parties can share democratic and political objectives
10:41while retaining their own history and judgment.
10:44Congress has simply asked an ally
10:46with respect for you to consider the position
10:48shaped by Tagore,
10:49adopted by Gandhiji, Nehru,
10:51Khi, Patel,
10:52Bose, Azad,
10:53Rajendra Prashadji.
10:54If a BJP wants every ally
10:56to defeat one approved line
10:57on patriotism,
10:59on culture,
11:00that tells you more about the BJP politics
11:02than it tells you about the India line.
11:04Let's take that then
11:05to Sanju Verma
11:06for the BJP.
11:07So many insinuations
11:08that have come in
11:09from the Congress spokesperson,
11:10Sanju,
11:11that it's your party.
11:12You want to create a divide.
11:13Are you the examiner?
11:14How do you get to decide
11:15who is more patriotic?
11:17And the Congress is right there
11:18because they're standing
11:18by their old position.
11:22You know, Pooja,
11:23thank you for having me over.
11:24Let me just put a couple of facts
11:26out there in the public domain.
11:27Yes.
11:27First and foremost,
11:29the Prevention of Insults
11:31to National Honor Act of 1971
11:33was duly amended
11:34by the Parliament
11:36a couple of weeks back.
11:37So singing all the six stanzas,
11:40does it have
11:41the sanction of Parliament?
11:43Oh, yes.
11:44Most certainly.
11:45And Parliament
11:46is the voice of the people
11:48and the biggest barometer
11:49of our democratic eco.
11:51So it's not that
11:52the BJP has suddenly decided
11:54that, you know,
11:55one fine day,
11:55there was no ad hoc
12:00or arbitrary decision
12:02about this entire thing.
12:04The second thing
12:05that I wish to highlight
12:06is this.
12:07The Congress lecturing
12:09on political morality
12:10or constitutional propriety
12:12is a whole load
12:14of balderdash
12:15and is absolutely
12:16laughable.
12:17I will tell you why.
12:18from 1905
12:20to 1937,
12:22this is very
12:23historical archive,
12:25if you want to check.
12:27For those 32 years,
12:29between 1905
12:30to 1937,
12:32many Congress leaders
12:34used to sing
12:35all the six stanzas.
12:37But it was in 1937
12:39that the CWC decided
12:41that there are only
12:42two stanzas
12:42in the country.
12:43The third and most
12:45important point
12:46is this,
12:46that this is not
12:48about two versus
12:49six stanzas at all.
12:50Let's not list
12:51the woods for the trees.
12:53The point is
12:54that
12:55be it a Jairan Ramesh,
12:56a Pawan Khera,
12:57a Rahul Dhandi,
12:58a Malikatyun Kharki,
12:59or BD Satteshan,
13:01or Kesi Venu Gopal,
13:02they have repeatedly
13:03said that
13:04the first two stanzas
13:06are fine,
13:06but after that,
13:08there's an invocation
13:09and references
13:10to goddess Durga,
13:12It's communalizing
13:13for two communities.
13:14Can I please finish?
13:15I'll talk for three minutes.
13:17Yes.
13:18My simple argument
13:19is this,
13:20Pooja,
13:20the state song
13:21of Telangana,
13:22the state song
13:23of Karnataka,
13:25the state song
13:26of Tamil Nadu,
13:27where the Congress
13:28is in power
13:29with the TVK,
13:31in all these
13:32three states,
13:33the state songs
13:34refer to
13:36Mata Duka,
13:37refer to Mata Kali,
13:39refer to Mata Sarasthuti,
13:41refer to Mata Naqshmi.
13:42So my point is,
13:44are the Congress
13:45governments
13:46in Karnataka
13:47and Telangana
13:48going to declare
13:49their state songs
13:51null and void
13:52because their state songs
13:53invoke Hindu goddesses?
13:56Okay.
13:56The other very important point,
13:58my final point is this.
13:59My final point,
14:00please.
14:01My final point is this.
14:02Sure.
14:03It's a genetic trajectory
14:04of the last 12 years.
14:06I don't think
14:06this controversy
14:07is about Vande Matran.
14:09This controversy
14:09is about Congress
14:11completely failing
14:13to take on
14:13Prime Minister
14:14Narendra Modi
14:15at the hustings.
14:16And what do they do?
14:17They see a controversy
14:18in everything.
14:19Do you remember?
14:20Okay.
14:20Rahul Gandhi refused
14:23to attend
14:24the Independence Day
14:25celebrations this year.
14:26He refused to attend
14:27the Independence Day
14:28celebrations last year.
14:29He refused to attend
14:30the oath-taking ceremony
14:32of the current
14:32Vice President
14:33Siti Radha Krishnan.
14:34He refused to attend
14:35the oath-taking ceremony
14:36of the current CJI
14:38with the Surya Gang.
14:39So the limited point is
14:40Rahul Gandhi
14:41is a rebel without a cause.
14:43And if somebody sits here
14:45and gives lectures
14:46to the BJP
14:47that this is not
14:47a loyalty test,
14:48why is it not?
14:50We are a Hindu
14:51majority country.
14:52No, there's no
14:53loyalty test,
14:53but this has been
14:55cleared by the parliament
14:56and also are we...
14:58And also are we
14:59assuming that
15:01Indian Muslims
15:01wouldn't en masse
15:03want to even
15:04be in presence
15:05of the national song.
15:06Is that an assumption
15:07also that we are making?
15:08Is this really a wall
15:09or not?
15:09We've heard Congress
15:10and BJP.
15:11Stay on with me.
15:12Gurmeir, I'll get
15:13other views as well.
15:14National Conference
15:15spokesperson is also
15:16joining me,
15:17Imran Nabidar.
15:18And I can tell you
15:19he's not just simply
15:19a spokesperson.
15:20He's in a very
15:21close group with
15:22Chief Minister
15:22Omar Abdullah.
15:23He understands
15:24the politics and
15:25strategies of the party
15:26because I cover JNK.
15:27Imran, you tell me.
15:29The Congress spokesperson,
15:30despite being your ally,
15:31says, you need to be
15:33more secular.
15:34You need to uphold
15:36the inclusivity.
15:37Don't sing the full
15:38national song.
15:40And I wouldn't have
15:41thought that the
15:42Congress was going to
15:42tell the national
15:43conference to be
15:44more secular here.
15:46So what do you think
15:47is the reply of the
15:48national conference here?
15:49Why do you think
15:50all these leaders
15:51decided to stand
15:53for all the six verses
15:55of the national song?
15:57Okay, I hear there is
15:58a slight audio
15:59connection issue
16:00that's happened
16:00with Imran and
16:01we'll go back to
16:02in that, in, on that
16:04in just a short
16:05while with him.
16:06Gurmehar, let me
16:07take that for you.
16:07You heard what
16:08Sanju Verma said.
16:10Is it a loyalty test?
16:11She's saying, yes,
16:12of course, it's about
16:12the country, so why
16:13not?
16:14And you heard all
16:15that she's saying
16:16that because Rahul
16:16Gandhi does not have
16:17any other issue,
16:18he's a rebel
16:19without a cause,
16:21therefore he's
16:21bringing in this
16:22issue.
16:24It's amazing.
16:25It's quite amazing
16:26that it's the BJP,
16:28you know,
16:29who has these
16:30ideological spaces
16:32and carries the
16:33tradition of an
16:34organization that
16:35has kept the
16:36tri-fellow of its
16:37headquarters for
16:3852 years.
16:40You know, they
16:40should be very,
16:41very careful about
16:42issuing patron
16:43autism purposes.
16:44The RSS on
16:46record,
16:47national, you
16:49know, the RSS
16:50record on the
16:51national symbol
16:52is part of
16:53its historical
16:53record.
16:54And in August,
16:55he can be very
16:55sick for members
16:56of the Savartya
16:57family testified
16:58in Pune 4,
16:59that Nataram
16:59and Gopal
17:00both were
17:01active members
17:01But Gurmehar, RSS
17:02is not a political
17:04party in political
17:06mainstream, like
17:07Congress and the
17:08BJP.
17:09It's a political
17:09purity.
17:10We are entitled
17:11to ask who has
17:12appointed the BJP,
17:13the examiner.
17:14You know, for
17:15example,
17:15the position was
17:16shaped by the
17:16people who fought
17:17for the freedom
17:18struggle and have
17:18built this republic.
17:20Okay, the
17:21national conference
17:22spokesperson is
17:23back, Imran,
17:23if you heard my
17:24question, is this
17:26a difference in
17:26the alliance
17:27partners?
17:28Are you more
17:29Indian as a
17:30party than the
17:31Congress or the
17:32Congress as it
17:32says, don't try and
17:34reach out to the
17:35BJP here?
17:36What happened on
17:36that day, Imran?
17:39See, first of all,
17:40there is no reach
17:41out to the BJP and
17:42this is not NC
17:44versus Congress.
17:45Congress is an
17:46important part of
17:48the India
17:48alliance and we
17:49are very much
17:49part of the
17:50India alliance.
17:51As far as this
17:52issue is concerned,
17:54we have to look at
17:55it objectively as
17:57you mentioned it
17:58earlier and for
18:00the benefit of the
18:01weavers, it is
18:01very important that
18:02the facts are
18:03kept in front.
18:04What are the
18:04facts?
18:05National conference
18:06has never been a
18:08votary of the
18:09Vande
18:09Mathram 6
18:10Tanzas.
18:11But now that
18:12the national
18:14song has been
18:15passed in the
18:17parliament and
18:18now it is
18:19something called
18:20constitutional
18:21obligation.
18:21It is the
18:22constitution that
18:23wants the
18:24constitutional heads
18:25of the state,
18:26whether it is
18:26the honourable
18:28CM, it is the
18:28LG, it is the
18:29ministers, it is
18:31their constitutional
18:31duty to respect
18:33what has been
18:34passed in the
18:35parliament and
18:36we are following
18:36that.
18:37Maybe national
18:38conference doesn't
18:39agree with what
18:41is, you know,
18:42what the
18:43stanzas are all
18:43about.
18:44But now that
18:45it has passed
18:46in the parliament.
18:48But why
18:48wouldn't you agree
18:49Imran, is there
18:50an objection that
18:50NC has in the
18:51national song?
18:54See, that is
18:55another debate.
18:56I mean, if we
18:56are debating the
18:57Vande
18:58Mathram as a
18:59poem, that is
19:00something that I
19:02would like to
19:03have my point of
19:04view, you know,
19:05very clear.
19:06And my point of
19:07view regarding
19:08Vande
19:08Mathram is that
19:09maybe it is not
19:10something that aligns
19:11with the idea of
19:12being a Muslim
19:13because the four
19:16lines that are
19:17under question, the
19:18four stanzas that
19:19are under question,
19:22actually, you
19:23know, this talks
19:24about a deity and
19:25as a Muslim, it
19:26maybe it is not
19:28something that I
19:29would agree with
19:30because we believe
19:31in one God.
19:32But as I told you
19:33earlier, let us
19:34not, I don't want
19:35to get into that
19:35kind of a
19:36controversy.
19:36see, now that
19:37the Congress, I
19:39would expect that
19:40the next election
19:41will happen.
19:41But Congress is
19:42saying, Imran, and
19:43before I go across
19:44to BGP Congress on
19:45that, but the
19:45Congress is saying
19:46they are urging the
19:47alliance partners,
19:48they are telling you
19:49what to do and you
19:49are not doing what
19:50they are telling you
19:51to do.
19:52No, I think here
19:53also, I more
19:55respectfully, with
19:56humility at my
19:57end, I would just
19:59request the
20:00Congress people,
20:01just, you know,
20:01their own, it is
20:02not national
20:03conference only, their
20:04own chief ministers
20:05have stood for
20:07these six
20:07tena, if you
20:08remember, whether
20:10it was the
20:11Honorable CM
20:11Karnataka and
20:13the Mr.
20:14Revan Tretti, the
20:15Honorable CM in
20:17Telangana, he, they
20:18or both of them
20:19stood for the
20:21entire national
20:23song in recently
20:24in on August
20:2615th.
20:27So I think it's a
20:28constitutional
20:29obligation and they
20:29also understand it.
20:30And more
20:31importantly, I
20:32don't understand
20:32why this thing
20:34was brought
20:34up because in
20:36Jammu and
20:36Kashmir, if you
20:37remember, August
20:3815th function, the
20:41same song was
20:42played on August
20:4315th as well.
20:44I don't know
20:44why the same, you
20:47know, the
20:48criticism came at
20:49that point.
20:49Okay, let's take
20:50it from the BJP.
20:51Sanju wants to say
20:52something here.
20:53They're saying it's
20:53constitutional
20:54obligation and it's
20:55okay to stand
20:56by.
20:56So who's at
20:57fault here?
20:57Is it the
20:58Congress party?
20:58Is it the BJP
21:00pushing for it?
21:02You know, let me
21:04just make one
21:04thing very
21:05clear.
21:05It was so
21:06heartening to
21:07see both
21:07Faruk Abdullah
21:08and Omar
21:09Abdullah standing
21:10in open
21:11songs when the
21:12national song was
21:14being played and
21:14the entire
21:15rendition happened
21:17seriously without
21:18any hiccups
21:19whatsoever.
21:20now coming to
21:21the Congress
21:22party, you
21:23know, I keep
21:24hopping back to
21:24them because
21:25there's a whole
21:26narrative being
21:27peddled on social
21:28media.
21:29Oh, you know,
21:30even Ambedkar
21:30don't want the
21:31full six standards
21:32to be rendered.
21:35Oh, Sardar
21:35Valdivad Patel
21:36was okay with
21:37only two standards.
21:39So I'll give you
21:39the Congress party.
21:41Suddenly, Jairam
21:42Ramesh, Padam
21:43Kher, and
21:43Gandhi, they
21:44remember Sardar
21:45Patel.
21:46I remember in
21:471990, when the
21:48Modi government
21:49decided to install
21:50a 597-seat
21:53tall statue of
21:54Sardar Patel at
21:54Khevaria in
21:55Gujarat to honor
21:56his legacy, the
21:57same Congress
21:58party said, what
21:59was the need to
22:00spend 3,000
22:01crores on a
22:03statue?
22:03It's a sheer
22:04waste of taxpayer
22:05funds.
22:06And this is the
22:08same Congress
22:08party.
22:09Do you remember
22:10Nehru awarded
22:11himself for
22:12Bharat Rekha in
22:121955?
22:13Ingra Gandhi
22:14awarded himself
22:15for Bharat Rekha
22:16in 1972?
22:17Sardar Patel
22:18was given a
22:19Bharat Rekha
22:1941 years
22:21after his
22:21demise in
22:221991.
22:23So why do you
22:24think the
22:24Congress is
22:25doing that,
22:25Sanju?
22:25Why are you
22:26saying that
22:27the Congress
22:27is raising
22:28an objection
22:29to it?
22:29Because they
22:30are saying
22:31we don't
22:31want to
22:31communalize
22:32it.
22:32We are
22:33going to
22:33of course
22:33sing the
22:34first two
22:34stanzas.
22:35Others we
22:35don't want
22:35to sing.
22:36What is
22:36the objection?
22:37Let me
22:38make one
22:38thing very
22:39clear.
22:39This is
22:40the Modi
22:40government.
22:41Prime
22:41minister is
22:42Narendi
22:42Modi.
22:431937 is
22:4589 years
22:46back.
22:47Stop
22:47harping
22:47about what
22:48the Congress
22:49working committee
22:49decided to
22:51do in
22:521937.
22:5389 years
22:54later we
22:55have decided
22:56that the
22:56national song
22:57will get
22:58the same
22:59status as
23:00the national
23:00anthem and
23:01the national
23:02flag and
23:03that is
23:03precisely the
23:04reason the
23:05prevention of
23:05insult to
23:06national honor
23:06act was
23:07amended.
23:07But my
23:08final point
23:08is this.
23:09When I
23:10tell you as
23:10BJP's
23:11national
23:11spokesperson
23:12that Congress
23:13is trying to
23:14communalize and
23:15weaponize
23:15one day
23:15matter, I
23:16say this
23:17because there
23:17is proof.
23:18Do you
23:19remember
23:19who went
23:20to the
23:20Supreme Court
23:21in 2007
23:22saying Prabhu
23:24Ryan is a
23:24figment of
23:25the imagination
23:26of BJP.
23:27Who went to
23:28the Supreme
23:29Court in
23:292008 saying
23:30Ram Sethu
23:31never existed.
23:33And what are
23:33Karnataka and
23:34Telenkala
23:35NLAC and
23:35NLCs saying
23:36in the last
23:3772 hours,
23:38there have been
23:39four top leaders
23:40who say we
23:41want sharia
23:42get back.
23:43And Rahul
23:44Gandhi,
23:44who has
23:44an opinion
23:45on everything
23:45on Afghanistan,
23:46has refused
23:47to condemn
23:48the Hindu
23:49phobia of
23:50his own
23:50MLA.
23:51Because Rahul
23:52Gandhi,
23:52Sonia Gandhi,
23:53Priyanka
23:54Vadra,
23:55his poor
23:55DNA is
23:56Hindu phobic.
23:57And do you
23:58remember an
23:58exciting point?
23:59After
23:59Operation
24:00Sindhu,
24:01when we
24:01dealt a
24:02body blow
24:03to Pakistan,
24:04what did
24:05Charanjeet
24:06Singh
24:06tell me,
24:07a confidant
24:08to Rahul
24:08Gandhi
24:08say,
24:09what do
24:09Pakistan
24:10was involved
24:13in the
24:13It is like
24:14saying,
24:14Pakistan did
24:15not kill
24:16my father,
24:17war did.
24:18It is like
24:18saying,
24:19Rahul Gandhi
24:20did not
24:20lose
24:20three
24:21people.
24:22Gurmeher,
24:22you see
24:23what's
24:23happening.
24:24The
24:24Bhartia
24:24Janata
24:25party is
24:26coming across
24:26as a
24:27party that's
24:27claiming,
24:28I ask you
24:29this question,
24:30they're claiming
24:30that they
24:31are the ones
24:31who truly
24:32believe what
24:32the national
24:33spirit has
24:33been and
24:34changes were
24:34needed,
24:35but the
24:35Congress is
24:35stalling it
24:36deliberately
24:37what is
24:38quintessential
24:39Indian,
24:39Indian
24:40heritage.
24:41And another
24:42question here
24:42Gurmeher is
24:43don't you
24:43have other
24:43issues to
24:44target the
24:45party in
24:45power rather
24:46than
24:47Vande Matram
24:47which many
24:48would say
24:49it's a
24:49national song,
24:49we all
24:50would want
24:50to sing it,
24:50even the
24:51national
24:51conference
24:51is singing
24:52it.
24:52Why not
24:53target the
24:53Modi
24:54government on
24:54other
24:54issues than
24:55this?
24:56100%
24:56and we
24:57will and
24:57I actually
24:58agree with
24:58you,
24:58you know,
24:59one of the
24:59facts that
25:00is missing
25:00from this
25:00conversation is
25:01we never
25:01voted against
25:02the
25:04against
25:05Vande
25:05Matram
25:05Protection Act
25:07in the
25:07parliament,
25:08we did
25:09support it
25:10and here's
25:11what the
25:13law also
25:14holds,
25:14sorry not
25:15the law but
25:15the act
25:16also holds,
25:17it does not
25:18talk about
25:18the stanzas,
25:19it just
25:20simply says
25:21that the
25:21same respect
25:21has to be
25:22paid to
25:23the national
25:24song as
25:25the national
25:25anthem.
25:26right,
25:26in talking
25:27about the
25:27BJP's,
25:28it is
25:28actually
25:28one of
25:29my most
25:29favorite
25:29topics
25:30to talk
25:30about,
25:31talking
25:31about
25:31the
25:31BJP's
25:32habit
25:32of
25:33giving
25:35patriotism
25:35certificates
25:36to
25:36everyone,
25:36you know,
25:36before the
25:37BJP throws
25:38words like
25:40appeasement
25:41or
25:43Hindu
25:44phobia
25:44against
25:45the
25:45congress,
25:46it should
25:46answer
25:46from its
25:47own
25:47alliances
25:48in its
25:49own
25:49ideological
25:49family.
25:50You know,
25:50let's go
25:50back to
25:51Syama Prasad
25:51Mukherjee
25:52who founded
25:52the Bharati
25:53Jansang.
25:53BJP's
25:54direct
25:54political
25:55predecessor.
25:56Served as
25:56a finance
25:57minister in
25:57the 1941
25:58Bengal
25:58cabinet
26:00led by
26:01Fazlul
26:02Haq.
26:02Fazlul
26:02Haq was
26:03the very
26:03leader who
26:04had moved
26:04the Muslim
26:05League's
26:05Pakistan
26:05resolution
26:06at Lahore
26:06in 1940.
26:08Hindu
26:08Mahasafa
26:08also participated
26:09in a
26:10coalition
26:10government
26:10with the
26:11Muslim
26:11League
26:11in provinces
26:12including
26:12Sindh.
26:13And
26:13Savarkar's
26:141937
26:16formulations
26:17spoke of
26:17Hindus and
26:17Muslims
26:18before the
26:19Rahul
26:19Dhar.
26:19So please
26:20do not
26:21rewrite
26:22history
26:23on television
26:24and then
26:24use
26:25rewritten
26:25versions
26:25against
26:26the
26:27Congress.
26:27So let
26:27me give
26:28that final
26:28comment
26:28because
26:29Imran joined
26:30late so I'll
26:30let him have
26:31that time.
26:32Imran,
26:32you heard what
26:32the Congress
26:33is saying and
26:34right now it's
26:35looking like a
26:36difference between
26:37Congress and
26:38National Conference
26:39and Congress
26:40telling the
26:40National Conference
26:41urging them
26:42what to do.
26:44Will the
26:44National Conference
26:44continue to keep
26:45the stand they're
26:46keeping or will
26:47they go with what
26:47the Congress is
26:48saying?
26:48Can that lead to
26:49a bigger clash
26:50between the two
26:51alliance partners?
26:52As far as
26:54National Conference
26:54is concerned
26:55there is no
26:55clash.
26:56We made our
26:57point clear
26:58and I think
27:00there shouldn't
27:01be any
27:01confusion.
27:02As far as
27:03Congress'
27:04stance is
27:04concerned I
27:05hope that in
27:06the next
27:06election Congress
27:09wins the
27:10majority and
27:11they are able
27:11to upturn
27:12this decision.
27:15And we will
27:16be with, I
27:16mean the point
27:17of the fact is
27:18that National
27:19Conference is a
27:19very small
27:20party.
27:20I mean we
27:21cannot change
27:21what will
27:22happen in the
27:23country.
27:23But we hope
27:24that the next
27:25election Congress
27:26wins with
27:27majority and
27:28they will be
27:28able to change
27:30this decision
27:31with the
27:32majority.
27:32All right,
27:34that's all the
27:35time I have for
27:36we'll see if that
27:36happens.
27:37Sanju I
27:37appreciate but
27:38that's all the
27:38time I have for
27:39thank you for
27:39all your points
27:40Gurmeher Kaur and
27:41Imran Abhi as
27:42well.
27:42So I'll leave it to
27:43the viewer to
27:43decide who do you
27:44think is coming
27:45out as a better
27:46opposition party
27:47right now.
27:48Is it the
27:48National Conference
27:49or is it the
27:50Congress Party
27:50as well?
27:51While we keep a
27:52track on what's
27:53happening as well
27:53I want to bring
27:54you now to
27:54Punjab.
27:56A death in
27:56Punjab's drug
27:57war has turned
27:58into a political
27:59flashpoint.
28:00Serious allegations
28:00against Bhagawan
28:02Taman government
28:02all on video.
28:03Just as the
28:04opposition stepped
28:05up its attack
28:05the family of
28:06Gulzar Singh,
28:07the man who
28:08died after giving
28:08a video dying
28:10testimony, the
28:11family has claimed
28:12a compromise as
28:13it appears with
28:14the government.
28:14But what triggered
28:16this dramatic U-turn?
28:17They were agitated.
28:18They wanted justice.
28:19What is the
28:19family saying
28:20now?
28:20What happened
28:21in Punjab
28:22in this report?
28:31A drug war,
28:32a death and
28:33now a political
28:34U-turn.
28:35The death of
28:36Gulzar Singh
28:37in Punjab's
28:38Sangroor has
28:38become the
28:39latest flashpoint
28:40in the state's
28:41raging drug war.
28:42Gulzar Singh
28:43died by suicide
28:44after consuming
28:45poison,
28:45following allegations
28:46that he faced
28:47pressure to
28:48apologize after
28:49questioning state
28:50finance minister
28:51Harpal Singh
28:52Chima over
28:53the alleged
28:54supply of
28:54chitta or
28:55drugs in
28:55his village.
28:56His family
28:57had earlier
28:58made serious
28:58allegations
28:59against Chima.
29:15But now comes a
29:17stunning reversal.
29:18Gulzar Singh's son
29:19Lakvinder Singh
29:20says the family
29:21has reached a
29:22samjhjhata or
29:23understanding.
29:24He says his brother
29:25will be given a
29:26government job and
29:27the family will
29:27receive compensation
29:28and most importantly
29:30that there is no
29:31pressure from the
29:32government.
29:49This comes amid a
29:51full-blown political
29:52battle.
29:53Leader of
29:54opposition Rahul
29:55Gandhi had targeted
29:56the Bhagavan Tman
29:57government demanding
29:58the resignation of
29:59finance minister
30:00Harpal Singh
30:01Chima and an
30:02impartial probe.
30:03He further
30:04pointed out that
30:05Chima had not
30:06been named in an
30:07FIR registered in
30:08the case.
30:25Chief Minister Bhagavan Tman
30:27accused opposition
30:28leaders of playing
30:29dirty politics,
30:30blaming Congress,
30:32BJP and Akali Dal
30:33for Punjab's drug
30:34crisis.
30:35The chief minister
30:36even shared visuals
30:37of locals confronting
30:38Congress leaders.
30:42Meanwhile, the BJP
30:43launched a four-prone
30:44attack on the
30:45Amadmi Party
30:46government, alleging
30:47that Gulzar Singh
30:48died by suicide
30:49after harassment and
30:50threats from the
30:51Amadmi Party workers.
30:53The party has also
30:54accused the Maan
30:55government of failing
30:56to contain Punjab's
30:57rampant drug
30:58menace.
31:00So as Punjab
31:01battles an old and
31:02deadly enemy,
31:04drugs, the political
31:05blame game, is
31:06getting sharper.
31:07The opposition
31:07says the government
31:08must answer questions
31:09over Gulzar Singh's
31:11death.
31:11The government
31:12says the opposition
31:12is exploiting a
31:13tragedy for
31:14political gain.
31:29And now the
31:30family's own account
31:31has added another
31:32layer to the
31:32controversy.
31:33A death that
31:34sparked allegations
31:35of political pressure
31:36has now produced
31:38a claim of
31:39compromise.
31:39With Kamaljeet
31:40Singh Sandhu,
31:41Bureau Report,
31:42India Today.
31:49The political
31:50face-off escalating
31:51in Punjab.
31:52Rahul Gandhi
31:53reiterating demand
31:53for the resignation
31:54of the people of
31:55Punjab, he says.
31:56Especially the Dalits
31:57should become
31:58vigilant regarding
32:00the misuse of power
32:01by the Amadmi Party
32:02government.
32:03That's Congress
32:04Party stepping up
32:05ante against AAP
32:06government in Punjab.
32:07Listen to what
32:07happened to Gulzar
32:08Singh Ji, says Rahul
32:09Gandhi.
32:10Belonged to Walmiki
32:11community in his
32:12final days.
32:13Hear it directly
32:14from the mouths
32:14of the family,
32:15mother, wife and
32:16brother.
32:17They tormented him
32:17in life and even
32:18in death.
32:19They are dishonoring
32:20Gulzar Singh Ji.
32:21The grieving family
32:22members themselves
32:22are saying they
32:23even have a right
32:24to traditional
32:25last rites that
32:26was snatched
32:27from them.
32:28The chief
32:29minister should
32:29immediately demand
32:30the resignation
32:31of the finance
32:31minister who was
32:32mentioned basically
32:33by Gulzar Singh.
32:34And there should
32:35be independent
32:35impartial time-bound
32:36investigation, not
32:38just an Irish.
32:39Rahul Gandhi
32:40clearly leaving
32:41no stone unturned
32:41in this.
32:42I am joined by
32:43our two guests
32:44on this panel.
32:45Advocate Arshpreet
32:46Khargyal, he is
32:47the national
32:47spokesperson of
32:47the Congress
32:48Party.
32:48Joining me from
32:49the Ahmadinei
32:50Party in Punjab,
32:51spokesperson Shashivir
32:52Sharma as well.
32:53Shashivir, I'll
32:54come to you first.
32:55Why has the
32:55minister not been
32:57added in the FIR
32:58even if there was
32:59a video testimony
33:00by Gulzar Singh
33:01which is called
33:02the dying testimony
33:03often taken as
33:04very strong value
33:05by the investigators?
33:06Is there political
33:08pressure on the
33:10cops?
33:10Sir, see, first
33:12of all, I would
33:13like to ask BJP,
33:14Congress and
33:15Kalidal stop doing
33:16this shameless
33:17politics over
33:18human life because
33:19yesterday, Gulzar
33:21raised, the day
33:23before yesterday,
33:23Gulzar raised
33:24issue of a drug
33:25right in front of
33:26Chimaji instead of
33:28sporting some drug
33:30mafia started
33:32harassing the
33:33complainant.
33:34Under the pressure,
33:35the complainant
33:35consumed the
33:36sulfas.
33:36then immediately
33:37the FIR
33:38got registered
33:38against every
33:39single person
33:40who was
33:41responsible for
33:43the death of
33:43the Gulzar
33:45saying, then
33:46the person who
33:47were doing the
33:48business of the
33:48drugs, the action
33:50has been taken
33:50against them.
33:51Now, look what
33:52the opposition
33:52political parties
33:53are doing.
33:54They have sunk
33:54to the absolute
33:55lowest level.
33:56They are so
33:57desperate and
33:58morally bankrupt.
33:59They are shamelessly
34:00trying to turn
34:01even a death
34:02into the political
34:03weapon against
34:04the Amadi
34:04party.
34:04But he said
34:05he asked
34:05Chima, after
34:06that local
34:07leaders have
34:09harassed him
34:10to take this
34:10step.
34:12Let me
34:13complain.
34:13The complainant
34:14first made a
34:16statement in
34:17front of
34:17Chimaji.
34:18Initially, the
34:19complainant made
34:20the statement
34:21where he
34:22doesn't take the
34:23name of the
34:23Chimaji.
34:24Then the
34:25person, the
34:26political person
34:26stopped him
34:28going to the
34:29hospital, then
34:30forced him to
34:31take the name
34:31of the Chimaji.
34:34Then they
34:35threatened him.
34:36If they don't
34:37take his name,
34:38then they will
34:38not allow to
34:39go to the
34:39How are you
34:39claiming that
34:41happened?
34:42There are two
34:43videos, ma'am.
34:44If you see, there
34:44are two videos
34:46that clearly
34:47shows what
34:47happened.
34:48Initially, that
34:49person, Gulzar,
34:50did not take the
34:51name of Chimaji.
34:52When he was on
34:52the way to the
34:53hospital,
34:54he stopped
34:55in a way, he
34:56forced to take
34:57the name of
34:57the Chimaji.
34:58They forced
34:59and threatened
35:00him.
35:00If he don't
35:01take the name
35:01of the Chimaji,
35:02then they will
35:03not allow to
35:03reach to the
35:04hospital.
35:04If you see, a
35:05person who has
35:06consumed the
35:07Salfaz and
35:07every second
35:08counts, the
35:09priority should
35:10have been rushing
35:10to the hospital
35:11to save his
35:12life.
35:13But you
35:14haven't answered
35:15my question,
35:16but the video
35:17of the dying
35:17testimony, is it?
35:18He's mentioned
35:19Chima there.
35:19Why is he not,
35:20the finance minister
35:21mentioned in the
35:22FI?
35:23I have already
35:24told you, there
35:25are two videos.
35:25If you see the
35:26first video, in the
35:27first video, he did
35:28not take the name
35:29of Chimaji.
35:30In the second
35:31video, they just
35:32to create a
35:33manufacture of false
35:34narrative against
35:35the Chimaji, they
35:36created that second
35:37video.
35:37So, sit has been
35:38marked in the
35:39case.
35:40This is a
35:40propaganda, this is a
35:42campaign against
35:43Ahmadinejee party
35:44government, their
35:45minister, that the
35:46victim was forced to
35:47take the name and the
35:48Congress party is now
35:49turning it political
35:50because Punjab
35:50election is approaching.
35:53Well, first and
35:54foremost, I want to
35:55tell what the
35:55chronology is.
35:57Mr. Gulzar had
35:58asked some relevant
36:00questions about the
36:01drug menace that is
36:02prevalent in Punjab,
36:03given that his own
36:04son was into it.
36:05And he was thrown
36:07out of the program
36:08that was done by
36:10Mr. Harpal Chima, the
36:11finance minister of
36:12Punjab.
36:13He was humiliated, he
36:15was threatened and
36:16such circumstances were
36:18created that he was
36:19forced to commit
36:20suicide and today he
36:22is no more.
36:23And before he died, he
36:26gave an oral dying
36:28declaration, which is
36:30a cogent piece of
36:31evidence in which he
36:32said that Harpal
36:34Chima is responsible
36:35for his death.
36:36Now that is crystal
36:38clear, the deceased,
36:40Mr. Gulzar Singh
36:41himself has said
36:42Mr. Harpal Chima is
36:44to be blamed for his
36:45death, is responsible
36:46for his death.
36:47Yet, Mr. Harpal
36:48Chima has not been
36:49nominated in the FIR
36:50because the Ram
36:51Admi party apparently
36:52believes that the law
36:54for them is different
36:55and the law for common
36:56people is different
36:57because I haven't seen
36:58even a single case
36:59wherein there was a
37:01dying declaration but
37:02the person who was
37:03named in that dying
37:03declaration was not
37:05nominated, I haven't
37:06was not nominated, I
37:07haven't seen him in a
37:07single case in my
37:08legal career.
37:10And number three, now
37:11there is a pattern to
37:12the Amadmi party, this
37:13is not the first time.
37:14Before this, there have
37:15been many instances.
37:16There was an incident
37:16of Professor Balvinder
37:18Kaur ji who had
37:19committed suicide
37:20wherein Harjot Bans
37:21was named another
37:22minister of the Amadmi
37:23party.
37:24Then there was an
37:25incident with regards
37:26to a DM, Gagandhi
37:27Pram Dhabha in which
37:29Amadmi party's minister
37:31Laljit Singh Bullar
37:32was named and
37:34tilled it, he is
37:34behind bars.
37:36Then there was an
37:36incident with regards
37:38to a Mohanjit Singh
37:39who had shown black
37:41flags in a program
37:43that was being done by
37:44the chief minister
37:45Punjab, Mr. Bhagwant
37:46Man and what was done
37:48to him, I will come to
37:49that later.
37:49Are you politicizing it?
37:51Let's take his
37:51question.
37:51Are you deliberately
37:52doing it because
37:53elections are approaching?
37:56Not at all.
37:57If anyone is trying
37:58to politicize the
37:59issue, it is the
37:59Amadmi party.
38:00We are asking for
38:01the truth to come out.
38:02We are asking for
38:02the justice to be
38:03done.
38:04We are asking for
38:05a wrong to be done
38:06right and it is the
38:07Amadmi party that is
38:08trying to brush things
38:09under the carpet, that
38:10is trying to save one
38:11of their own and I
38:12have given you four
38:13examples.
38:14Professor Balvinder Kaur,
38:15then of DM Gagandhi
38:17Pram Dhabha, then of
38:18Mohanjit Singh and then
38:19Gulzar Singh.
38:19You see a pattern of
38:21intolerance.
38:21You see a pattern of
38:23suppression.
38:24Amadmi party, I
38:25want to ask them this
38:26one simple thing.
38:27The last week, what we
38:29saw with regards to
38:30Mohanjit Ji was, he
38:31had asked similar
38:32questions about drugs
38:33and he had shown
38:33black flags.
38:34What happened to him?
38:35Thousand slippers.
38:36He was hit with a
38:37thousand slippers is
38:38what he said.
38:39He was thrown into
38:40the toilet.
38:40The issue here is,
38:41he was electrocuted.
38:42There is evidence that
38:43he confronted the
38:44minister like any
38:46rightful citizen,
38:46especially when your
38:47own family member,
38:48your son is being
38:48affected and a
38:50reliable and a
38:51complete dying
38:52declaration does not
38:54require corroboration.
38:55It can serve as a sole
38:56basis for criminal
38:57conviction and it can
38:59be seen as a document
39:00that can be legally
39:01admissible as well as a
39:03dying declaration for
39:04you to say today, sir,
39:06but no, somebody pushed
39:07him, somebody forced him
39:08to mention, somebody asked
39:10him to say, there is no
39:11corroboration for that.
39:12No, no, no, no, no.
39:14One second.
39:14Now, I want to make it
39:15very, very clear.
39:16In the video...
39:18Ashwit, Ashwit, I asked
39:19that to Ahmad Bipati.
39:20Let him answer.
39:21Let him answer that.
39:22Let him answer that.
39:23Go ahead.
39:25First of all, I have
39:26cleared the whole thing
39:27because there are two
39:28videos.
39:29In first video, this
39:31person did not take the
39:32name of Mr. Chima.
39:34Initially, when he was on
39:35the way to the hospital,
39:36he was forced to take the
39:38name of Mr. Chima for the
39:39sake of this dirty
39:40politics.
39:41The politics, today
39:42Congress...
39:43Which other video you
39:44are talking about?
39:45Because I know of a
39:45confirmed video where he's
39:46taking the name.
39:48No, already a set has
39:50been formed to
39:51investigate the matter.
39:53What was the allegation
39:54in the first video?
39:55It will be decided and
39:57investigated.
39:58And who doctored and
39:59who tried to make the
40:00second video just to
40:01create the narrative, that
40:02has also been
40:03investigated.
40:04So, wait for the set to
40:05report.
40:06But at this stage, every
40:08time, this is not the
40:10first time, every time
40:11they look for the
40:12persons of death or a
40:14dead body to politics
40:15in the Punjab.
40:16Because they don't have
40:17any ground over there.
40:18You know, neither
40:19Congress nor BJP
40:20Akali is having any
40:22progressive things to
40:24speak or anything to
40:26say against the
40:26Ahmadi Party.
40:27They try to look at
40:28this kind of...
40:28Affirmative.
40:29Okay, so the Congress
40:30has nothing much to say
40:31against the AAP government.
40:32Just to push the Ahmadi
40:33Party.
40:33Yes, to now give it a bad
40:35name.
40:36But Ashreet, what has
40:37concerned me though, and
40:38you tell me about it.
40:39Rahul Gandhi saying an
40:40hour ago, the people of
40:42Punjab, especially the
40:43Dalits, should become
40:45vigilant regarding the
40:47misuse of power by the
40:48Ahmadi Party government.
40:49Is it not provoking the
40:51Dalit community as well?
40:53No, not at all.
40:54It is not provoking them.
40:55It is cautioning them.
40:57It is Mr. Gandhi showing
40:59care and concern for
41:00them.
41:01Because the Ahmadi Party's
41:02government has done this
41:03to a person right in
41:05front of us wherein he
41:06has taken the name of
41:07the minister.
41:08What else do we need?
41:09And I want to tell you
41:11as a lawyer also that I
41:12haven't seen a single
41:13case wherein despite a
41:14dying declaration, a
41:15person was not nominated.
41:17And in this case, what
41:17should have been done?
41:18Now here the Ahmadi Party
41:19is taking a defense that
41:21he was coerced.
41:21Now, we have all seen
41:23the veto.
41:24Do you think there was
41:25any coercion in the
41:26veto?
41:26But he is also saying
41:27SIT has been formed.
41:29Shouldn't that convince
41:30you and your party?
41:31No, no, no, no, no.
41:32One, nominating the
41:34person who has been
41:35named was paramount.
41:36It was the first thing
41:37that should have been
41:37done.
41:38Mr. Harpal Chima
41:38should have been
41:39nominated in the FIR.
41:40He has not been
41:41nominated because he is
41:42the finance minister.
41:42He is a powerful person.
41:43He is associated with
41:44the Ahmadi Party.
41:46And the police takes
41:47directions from the
41:48home minister.
41:49Who is the home
41:49minister?
41:50Mr. Bhagwan Taman.
41:51And Mr. Harpal Chima
41:52is the number two in
41:53Punjab.
41:53So my request here is
41:54that either a high code
41:56monitored probe be done
41:57or an out-of-state
41:59probe be done so that
42:00justice could be meted
42:01out to Gulzar Singh Ji.
42:03I want to give you one
42:03more example here.
42:05Now, the Ahmadi Party is
42:06taking a defense that he
42:07was coerced.
42:08However, Gulzar Singh Ji
42:10has nowhere said that he
42:11was coerced.
42:12Before he died, he
42:13nowhere said that he
42:14was coerced.
42:15He cannot, you see in the
42:16video, he is talking, the
42:18manner in which he is
42:20talking, it's a relaxed
42:21manner.
42:22He is not talking as if he
42:23was coerced or forced to
42:24do anything.
42:25And number three, this
42:26defense if Ahmadi Party
42:28wants to create, that is a
42:30subsequent thing.
42:31But let the person be
42:32nominated in the FIR.
42:33Because I just have a few
42:34more minutes, I want to
42:35hear from.
42:36One last point.
42:37Go ahead, last point then
42:38I'll give Sashi Vee the
42:40fine point.
42:40Yes, go ahead.
42:41Perfect, perfect.
42:41My request here is had it
42:43been any other case, had
42:45it been any other person,
42:46he would have been
42:47nominated right after the
42:49dying declaration.
42:49That is the natural
42:50course of action.
42:51And if the Ahmadi Party
42:52has a defense to it, you
42:54do use that defense in the
42:55trial, nah, he would be
42:57acquitted.
42:58Sashi Vee, there are
42:59multiple issues here.
43:00So a quick response to
43:01that because the Punjab
43:02voter and viewer is
43:03watching.
43:04The drug menace doesn't
43:06seem to be coming to an
43:07end.
43:07Now there's addition of
43:08drug mafia allegedly
43:09coursing a person, almost
43:11taking the step that
43:12you're saying forced him
43:13to commit suicide because
43:14of the drug mafia.
43:16Then there's a ruling
43:17party that's facing the
43:18charge that they were so
43:19influential, even if a
43:20dying declaration names
43:22him, he will not be
43:22mentioned in the FIR.
43:24So you tell me as a
43:25voter and a viewer
43:27watching you, what is
43:28then the Ahmadi Party
43:29going to do in this case
43:30because it reflects very
43:31poorly on you right now?
43:34First of all, I would
43:35say the SIT has been
43:37performed, the SIT is
43:39investigating with regard
43:41to the second video.
43:42There is one video also.
43:44There is the first video
43:45in which he has not
43:46taken the name of the
43:47Chima that has to be
43:48appreciated as evidence.
43:50And then there is
43:51another second video
43:52which those person who
43:54are forcing him, those
43:55person who are putting
43:56the name in his mouth
43:57that has to be seen, the
43:58SIT.
43:59So matter is under
44:00investigation.
44:01So for the sake of
44:02politics, dirty politics,
44:04or to manufacture and
44:05some forced
44:06So let's hope that at least
44:07the SIT will be impartial
44:09and independent and that
44:10man who is no more will
44:11get justice in this case
44:13and that there will be no
44:14pressure on the family
44:15about it.
44:16I appreciate you joining us
44:17Buddha, Mahabhi Party and
44:18Congress Spokespersons.
44:19That's all the time I have
44:20for.
44:20I'm wrapping up to the
44:21point.
44:23I leave for the viewer to
44:23decide what's happening in
44:25the country.
