A warning this next story contains references to suicide. Residents of a small New South Wales town have come together to remember two local lives lost to suicide. Hundreds took part in a 9 kilometre walk to reflect on the 9 lives lost to suicide in Australia every day. The walk is in support of mental health charity lifeline which took more than 1 million calls for help last year.

00:01More than 100 people have been here in this quiet country town of Aberdeen today to stop
00:06and reflect on the nine lives lost to suicide each day. There's been a 9K walk to stop and
00:11reflect and at the same time raising funds and awareness for Lifeline. Of course tomorrow
00:16is R U OK? Day and World Suicide Prevention Awareness Day as well. So taking this big
00:22look at our mental health, being open to starting those conversations and we know a lot of that
00:27always boils back to sport. So one of the sporting legends, rugby league great Wally Lewis has
00:32taken part today. Wally come on over, thank you for being here. How important is it that
00:38connection between sport and our mental health? Well it plays an enormous role. Certainly I've
00:43had a little bit to do with many sports guys that struggle with mental health. Some of them
00:50find that it's extremely difficult and they need all the advice and assistance that they can receive.
00:57But I think we're realists and we understand that success is something that we're all chasing in
01:03life. For those that don't get to be able to enjoy it all that often, the great disappointment that is
01:09attached to it can often create some dramatic circumstances. I've seen guys that set out to
01:16achieve some goals in life, usually on the sports field. But we remind them that their everyday lives
01:22are even more important. Certainly for those that are involved in their families, to be able to assist
01:29them. But I really, you know, do sort of remind a lot of the other footy guys that I've been
01:36involved
01:36with is never be too scared to open up and declare that you need a little bit of help. Because
01:43there are
01:43certainly going to be some times as well where others are supporting assistance from them.
01:48That's right. Well Wally, thank you for joining us today.
01:50My pleasure indeed. It's been a great thrill coming here. I'm looking forward to coming back the next
01:54time. Thank you. That's it. Lifeline there. It takes more than a million calls across the year,
02:00one every 29 seconds. So it's great to be here today. Seeing this tiny country town certainly support that
02:06well worth cause.
