A landmark study has found the degenerative brain disease, CTE, in 31 of 51 brains donated by former rugby league players. Among those diagnosed was NRL player and coach Paul Green, who died in 2022. His widow, Amanda Green, is calling for better protections for young athletes.

00:01I wasn't surprised with Paul's CTE diagnosis but I was definitely surprised with the severity of
00:09his diagnosis. After donating Paul's brain and before I got the results I did do a little bit
00:16of my own research on CTE and there were just so many similarities between the changes I had seen
00:23in Paul and the CTE symptoms because I had seen changes in Paul but I believe that he was masking
00:32the severity of those changes. Unfortunately at the time I had put down a lot of the changes that
00:39I'd seen in Paul to that high pressure environment that he'd been working in as a head coach. I often
00:46look back and think oh if only I'd known back then what I now know about CTE, could I have
00:52helped Paul
00:53more? Could I have supported him more? Unfortunately I'll never know but what I can do is I can
00:59ensure I can talk about Paul and talk about CTE and ensure that people are better educated,
01:05that families know more than what I knew and hopefully no one else suffers in silence like Paul did.
