"Der feine Knab" is a German folk song and the 1816 version of "Der treue Husar." This song includes the oldest melody to "Der treue Husar." The lyricist and composers are unknown, but this version uses what Carl Hohnbaum heard in Franconia.
In some versions, the girlfriend gets better and survives. In this 1816 version, she passes away.

Context: There was a young man and his girlfriend of 7 years. They loved each other for 7 years. One day, the girlfriend became terminally ill. She did not speak for three days and nights. As soon as the man got the news of her illness, he immediately left all his possessions to visit his girlfriend. When he carried her in his arms, she was already cold and deceased.

2. Ja sieben Jahr und noch viel mehr,
Die Lieb nahm kein End nicht mehr.
3. Ja krank, ja krank bis in dem Tod.

4. Sobald der Knab die Botschaft kriegt,
Daß sein Herzliebchen kranke liegt,
5. Verließ er gleich sein Hab und Gut,
