00:04:41In a way that only Flavio, we do need those characters around, but then it was great to see him
00:04:46jump, literally jumping for joy there, wasn't he Flavio?
00:04:49So, you know, it's a good fillet for the team and they've been threatening to do something pretty strong this
00:04:54year.
00:04:55They're really tuning that car up nicely and making good use of the Mercedes power unit behind them.
00:05:01But Pierre knows what it's like to win round here.
00:05:03He did so, and that was an incredible race in 2020, all sorts of things.
00:05:07Red flags, 10 seconds, stop-go for Lewis Hamilton, nevertheless, in his Alfa Tauri, delivered.
00:05:13One of the most special memories around this place in 2020, just for him, you know, to have that redemption
00:05:18after being dropped by Red Bull,
00:05:19what fantastic scenes it was to see him stand on the top step of that podium, sit down on it,
00:05:23and I think he just was soaking it in and couldn't believe it.
00:05:25I wonder if we'll get something like it today again.
00:05:28I wonder indeed. He'd dearly love to do it again.
00:05:31There were six one-hundredths exactly between Pierre Gasly and George Russell yesterday.
00:05:36Let's illustrate that difference with the ghost car, Akarou.
00:05:41A fantastic pole position for Pierre Gasly.
00:05:43Let's see how he did it using the ghost car and riding on board with George Russell.
00:05:47Now, George got a slipstream from Kimi Antonelli.
00:05:50You can see there, Antonelli's moved aside, but he had Max Verstappen in front of him, just 2.2 seconds
00:05:56in front,
00:05:57and that gave George a bit of turbulent air.
00:06:00So, into the first chicane, he had to brake about 16 meters before Gasly in the Alpine,
00:06:05and as you can see with the ghost car, Gasly's already gained about 0.17 in just that first chicane
00:06:13there.
00:06:14As they come through the second chicane, George pulls a little bit back, but it's interesting to me.
00:06:19Watch here. He uses to deploy a bit of extra energy, actually,
00:06:23and gains back about a tenth, just on the short straight,
00:06:26between the second chicane, the Della Roja, and the first Lesmo.
00:06:31Through the second Lesmo, George actually gets a really good run through there,
00:06:34and he's picking up the toe. He is closer to the back of Verstappen's car than Gasly was to Hamilton
00:06:42in front of him.
00:06:43So, as we come through the Ascari chicane, this is where the turbulent air starts to hurt George.
00:06:48He's fighting the wheel just a little bit, but now I'm going to switch to the overhead,
00:06:52because he goes from a tenth behind to actually a tenth in front.
00:06:56And the Mercedes cars have chosen to save some deployment for that final straight from the Ascari chicane down to
00:07:04the Parabolica.
00:07:05But let's go on over George here. Now, this is where the slipstream effect, which was a positive for that
00:07:10straight, turns into a negative.
00:07:12Watch his hands there. Bit of oversteer, bit of sliding, and there's a bit of hesitation in terms of picking
00:07:17up the power.
00:07:17And here comes the ghost car of Pierre Gasly. You can see he snuck back in front.
00:07:23It was only six hundredths of a second across the line, but it all came down to that final run
00:07:28through the Parabolica,
00:07:29where unfortunately for George, he was just a bit too close to Max, and it cost him downforce and performance.

00:10:08today is going to be a bit of an odd race with this battery and probably going to see a
00:10:13lot of yo-yo, but I felt good in the car, so, you know, I'll just absolutely send it and
00:10:18we'll see what it is.

00:11:19Kimi Antonelli, as we said, the Italian boy leading the championship by 59 points from his teammate George Russell and
00:11:27from Lewis Hamilton.
00:11:2824 points further back is Lando Norris, then Charles Leclerc at four points further adrift of him. Max Verstappen coming
00:11:36into this race last year was 104 points behind.
00:11:39In the end, he finished just two behind Lando Norris, but 130 shy. Is he too far off for a
00:11:46late challenge?
00:11:46Probably. Oscar Piastri might consider the same. And as we were saying, because of what happened with Gasly losing that
00:11:52podium again, it's affected his points tally.
00:11:55And Isaac Hadjaas as well. Reinstrae, as I mentioned, at the top of the show to third.
00:12:00In the constructors then, this is what it looks like. Healthy gaps. Pretty similar gaps, actually, between the top four.
00:12:06Mercedes 87 clear, Ferrari. There's 73 to McLaren. Red Bull 76 shy of them.
00:12:13Going into practice, by the way, and through practice, racing bulls are only three ahead of Alpine, but because of
00:12:20that decision, the gap is 16.
00:12:22But I wonder if they can close that, depending on what Pierre and also Franco Colapinto, who starts as far
00:12:28forward as he ever has from seventh.
00:12:31Right, it's been a busy start to the show. And guess what? Gets even better.

00:13:21So this is now the view from the back. They just closed the engines up, so you can't sneak peek

00:13:28Anyway, so we have, of course, today you have George. George is starting second.
00:13:33He was the favorite yesterday for qualifying, but Max Verstappen ruined his out lap for the last qualifying attempt yesterday.
00:13:40And that cost him that little bit of time, which meant P2 and Gasly got P1 in the end, which
00:13:45you saw Toto banging the table.
00:13:47I think he was really angry to lose the pole there, but big, big pressure on George today because he's
00:13:5259 points behind Kimi.
00:13:53He needs to maximize the opportunity with Kimi starting in the back of the grid because of that engine change.
00:13:58So huge pressure on George, but he has a fast race car.
00:14:02Gasly was not so fast on Friday free practice when he was practicing for the race.
00:14:05So I think George has to be the big favorite and all chances there.
00:14:08Kimi on the other end, starting last.
00:14:10Lewis did the same thing in 2022.
00:14:12He started 19th on the grid, finished fifth with the Mercedes at the time.
00:14:16So I think Kimi has a similar opportunity.
00:14:19Top five.
00:14:19I don't think top three because you have the Ferraris going fast.
00:14:22You have a McLaren going fast.
00:14:23Piastri, you have Russell, maybe Gasly even.
00:14:26So top three will be very hard.
00:14:27Top five should be possible.
00:14:28And rumor has it, Kimi is going for a different setup today than George because, of course, qualifying wasn't important.
00:14:35So Kimi has put on a bigger rear wing.
00:14:37He has more downforce in the car to be able to follow the cars ahead more closely and have a
00:14:41better run down the straight.
00:14:43So we all eyes on him today, how far he can get, how much overtaking can do.

00:14:50So we saw the irritation, didn't we, yesterday, Martin, from Toto that they didn't take pole position.
00:14:55He probably still is favorite on the evidence what we've seen from the Mercedes so far this season and this
00:15:00weekend.
00:15:01But George, he knows that this is a race where he's got to deliver, got to win, really.
00:15:05Yeah, the data for the Alpine starts is reasonably good, pretty good.
00:15:10But I would expect both George and Pierre Gasly to be under pressure from the two Ferraris down at the
00:15:17first corner.
00:15:17But if Russell can get out front in his Mercedes, I think it's his race to lose at that point.
00:15:23He's got a tenth a second in his pocket.
00:15:25His teammate is obviously going to be with the field spread in the first few laps a long way behind.
00:15:30So you still have to say if George can get out front and build any kind of gap, he is
00:15:35the favorite for this Grand Prix.
00:15:36Last couple of races out here, I mean, you're saying lost a couple of places off the line.
00:15:40That's the thing, isn't it?
00:15:41He needs to get that start right.
00:15:43He does need to get the start right.
00:15:44But I'm not fully convinced that whoever gets through the first chicane is going to lead the lap at the
00:15:49end of the lap.
00:15:49We're going to see a lot of moving of positions.
00:15:51As Martin says, I guess the most important thing in this race today is building a gap
00:15:55because the leader is inevitably going to be punching a hole in the wind for everybody else.
00:15:59I believe they're probably going to stay in a train.
00:16:01So actually, being in the lead might not be the most favorable position.
00:16:04So I don't think, you know, of course, they want to execute.
00:16:08Of course, he wants to make damage into the points to his teammate.
00:16:10But this is a track where he will be able to get past them.
00:16:13So it's about the long game in the race today.
00:16:15And about the in route, well, particularly for Kimi Antonelli.
00:16:18Play that long game, see how far forward he can get.
00:16:20Yeah, Antonelli, to have a spectacular result today,
00:16:23Antonelli needs a safety car or some quirky shunt in the first corner or whatever.
00:16:26He's got to stay out of trouble himself.
00:16:28But as we keep seeing drivers with engine power unit penalties,
00:16:33we've got two drivers starting from the pit lane.
00:16:36So already Antonelli starts 18.
00:16:38He'll sail through the first eight or ten of those, and then it will get harder.
00:16:42Yeah, I was going to say, though, I mean, this is a Monza that we've not seen before under these
00:16:46regulations.
00:16:46Now, in the past, we saw DRS trains.
00:16:49But potentially, just maybe, we might see just different deployments aiding the racing.
00:16:53Well, from what we've been seeing over the weekend, different teams are doing different deployment strategies.
00:16:58And I think that will make it interesting today.
00:17:01Because sometimes we see, even with deployment, like we saw in Zanfurt, a lot of the teams do the same
00:17:04thing.
00:17:05We don't see a lot of overtaking.
00:17:06Here, I believe it will be different.
00:17:07And I think that will put on a great show for us today.

00:20:19to be soaking up the pressure with a maturity that is just so way beyond his years with kimmy
00:20:25antonelli it does seem he can handle the pressure and the expectation and suddenly he's absolutely on
00:20:33here and that's a big statement from him is like yeah i belong here i'm good enough to be in
00:20:38formula one
00:20:46the favorite for the championship is still kimmy antonelli
00:20:59yeah potentially some split loyalties perhaps for italian motorsport fans but what about this now
00:21:05a special tribute livery this weekend on the fry hopefully a little bit more like that one because
00:21:11that is the f 2002 michael schumacher's uh one of his five championships he won in that of course
00:21:16sebastian vettel driving let's have a listen in
00:21:27lovely scream to it of course a treat always to to listen to but uh 20 years since michael schumacher
00:21:34retired from ferrari 30 years since he joined the team what a lovely moment for sebastian vettel
00:21:39he's been speaking with ted well seb wow what a moment what a car small light v10 engine michael's car
00:21:52yeah very mixed emotions um
00:21:57it was like a time travel because it felt like i was him for you know a few seconds in
00:22:04there
00:22:04um seeing what he saw um it's the car the time the era the driver that i fell in love
00:22:13with and i
00:22:14remember when i was a child i grew up watching and uh to be in that position today and the
00:22:20circumstances
00:22:21we you know we miss him and we would have loved to see him drive his car
00:22:26uh he felt very alive and uh you know i really felt uh him and i think we all did
00:22:32and we heard him
00:22:33um with the with that sound with that car here that track um very very emotional you were pushing it
00:22:39i still had a lot in hand but it was screaming at me like go go and you know i've
00:22:47been out for too
00:22:48long but it doesn't usually take a lot of time for you to sense the soul of a car and
00:22:52this car was
00:22:52definitely screaming at me and wanted to to go faster so uh yeah but it's obviously so much more than
00:22:59just driving i mean i i i i really enjoyed it as well and i miss it you know in
00:23:05moments like this
00:23:06but then you know i think the in the bigger picture this sport has given us so much michael
00:23:11myself and you know towards the end of his career we started really started talking and opening up
00:23:16about you know things that matter in life and apart from lap time and tire degradation yeah and
00:23:22uh i think today is one of these moments where you know it's also a reminder that for me personally
00:23:28how much i love the sport still and even so even though i'm not racing anymore i'm still very much
00:23:33connected and i probably always will be and um that's why i also care so much and yeah in this
00:23:39sense
00:23:39i very much think which fits is that there's still a race to win and it's just not uh it's
00:23:44just a
00:23:45different one than it than it used to be in the past so times are different but um yeah before
00:23:49i get too
00:23:50nostalgic and uh yeah it's it's it's been a very very special moment and for your friend michael of
00:23:57course a serendipitous moment because you know once in 2008 on a wet qualifying day and a young
00:24:03man called sebastian in a toro rosso an unfancied car at the time got pole position you never know an
00:24:08unfancied car and alpine pierre is on pole he's pulled it off before a couple years ago but um
00:24:15um yeah i think we all now are very excited and prepped for the grand prix and uh yeah i've
00:24:21like
00:24:21i said i've i've always you know i'm not racing anymore but i'm still a racer at heart and uh
00:24:26care
00:24:27so i'm following and still in contact with uh with the with the drivers and uh yeah wish them are
00:24:32safe
00:24:32and and good race one to enjoy for sure the atmosphere is incredible especially if you are
00:24:37dressed in red in red um but even if you're not dressed in red it's still a very good feeling
00:24:41to

00:25:27about the amount of iconic moments of course that michael schumacher provided i wonder if there might be
00:25:33another one today because this was lewis arriving for the weekend in his own by the way uh personal f40
00:25:40with an engine number of 44 couldn't buy that could you but i wonder if one of those two

00:25:58us what it feels like to wear red in italy other than charles and lewis let's go talk to them

00:26:04we're here in monza ferrari's home race is such an incredible event for you guys take me back to that
00:26:10moment where you first became aware of ferrari and what it represented it was in in my italian days
00:26:16where i was uh where i was racing in karting and to speak with the mechanics and seeing the passion
00:26:22and for me the eyes never lies and when when you speak to to an italian and and when you
00:26:27come to
00:26:27monza as well for the first time you really see that it means a lot more than just sports and
00:26:32and racing i did karting over here so i had been around italians and um already had kind of a
00:26:39taste
00:26:39of it then but it's much different in ferrari i had some difficult times quite a lonely period for me
00:26:47what i would do is i would just channel it into my driving i was like okay we'll see what
00:26:51happens
00:26:52when we get on track we often say that in italy ferrari is a religion and i honestly believe that
00:26:57it's
00:26:57it's as close as it can possibly be i mean it's a it's a very very special feeling but then
00:27:04when i
00:27:04did my first monza in 2019 with a team to see the amount of tifosi and obviously i've had the
00:27:10chance
00:27:10to also win it that year was extremely special you've done it ferrari seems to generate a passion
00:27:21that very much transcends the sport in this world that we're in why do you think that ferrari have
00:27:27this power um to to drive such passion first of all i think there's very much something from the
00:27:33italian culture that italians are very emotive and and that's what makes ferrari so so special as
00:27:40well something i just always cherish with with ferrari even when i wasn't in this team i remember
00:27:44there was a race when i was in singapore i got out of my car and get out to celebrate
00:27:49with my team and
00:27:50my team wasn't there and ferrari celebrated with me when i was like okay you got you guys are my
00:27:54team
00:27:54this weekend michael schumacher crosses the line to win the italian grand prix we can never talk about
00:28:03ferrari without thinking of michael schumacher do you have an early childhood memory of michael when i was
00:28:08maybe seven or eight and we were lucky enough to be able to uh to meet him and he signed
00:28:13my suit
00:28:13and the driver i was looking up to was the one winning and that was michael i watched michael and
00:28:19of course watched in or the car was just awesome his helmet the style he had a huge admiration for
00:28:26him and what he was able to do consistently how we would deliver and how he would lift the team
00:28:31up
00:28:31for sure lots of inspiration take me through those emotions and what you felt when you realize i'm
00:28:38going to be a ferrari driver i mean i spent so much of my time trying to beat ferrari i'd
00:28:43walk past the
00:28:43other teams and i got a different feeling from the ferrari team you walk past the red guys and and
00:28:49there was they would say vini ferrari vini ferrari and i was like wait wait they want me to come
00:28:52to
00:28:52drive right it's a day a moment i'll forever remember i was with my friends actually and
00:28:58marie tiara vabene called me he left like 15 seconds blank without speaking on the phone i was
00:29:04like okay what's going on i said no i'm joking you're actually a ferrari driver next year oh my goodness
00:29:11yeah good news at the end of it very good news when stefano was here i've spoken to him a
00:29:17couple of

00:31:52the battery wasn't deploying the way that it should have been in q2 it was one thousandth of a second

00:32:01optimization that then had a knock-on effect on the rhythm of their session uh we were a bit surprised
00:32:06that uh you know what happened yesterday with them and why they weren't quite as quick as we've seen
00:32:10throughout the weekend but i think their long-run pace today should be impressive if they can get us
00:32:14together on the pit wall well in the end they're going to be relieved that uh again with
00:32:17oscar piastri taking a three-place good penalty for impeding liam lawson they're starting for the
00:32:22second row of the grid what do you think is possible today yeah i think they can live with
00:32:25that second row of the grid starts because it does give them all the opportunities especially since
00:32:29they're together so they could offset themselves on strategy to give them a better chance against
00:32:34the guys who are on their own ahead of them because russell is on his own and gasly is on
00:32:38his own
00:32:39so yeah there's a great i mean definitely they're going to be on the podium i don't know if there's
00:32:43enough there to be able to win the race because russell's best specifically is just very fast
00:32:48today yeah i mean we started the season obviously with that that you know smaller turbo straight
00:32:52off the line very very quick the others have arrested that a little bit but they have got the
00:32:57upgraded engine we've not seen it in race conditions yet yeah we haven't seen it in race conditions but
00:33:01the feeling across the board from you know ollie bearman's got it as well and from the camp at ferrari
00:33:06is that they clearly have made progress with this engine we're seeing it here they're very competitive
00:33:10there's been a lot of playing around about where people are deploying their power some of it in the
00:33:14first sector some of in the second sector and ferrari yesterday had toyed around with that a lot so
00:33:18of course on race day that changes again um but so that adds another factor in to see how they're
00:33:24going to manage that throughout the race today as well i thought there's some interesting comments
00:33:27by lewis overnight with regards to ferrari need to go one two now now he's ahead of his teammate
00:33:32presumably he's thinking boy you got back me i'm your number one i'm surprised by those comments
00:33:37because it's a bit early in the season for that but i mean i do understand because they've been in
00:33:42each other's way for like the last four races now and of course if there's a clear one two hierarchy
00:33:48lewis would have scored a lot more points in the last couple of races but it's too early you cannot
00:33:52demote charlotte claire who's like the golden child there you know to number two i know it's difficult
00:33:57they used to do it but this isn't michael and rubens this is i mean whatever this isn't fernando
00:34:03felipe this is these two it's very tricky and we saw in zanford how they hesitate to make a decision
