We’ve got our hands on a Red Bull BMW M2 - and it’s been converted into a drift car! So we’re going to see if a car that’s made for cornering at extreme speed has what it takes to beat a Lamborghini in a straight line!

Does it stand a chance? Let’s take a closer look at the stats…

The Red Bull M2 is powered by a BMW S58 engine. However, rather than having twin turbos, this 3-litre straight-six instead comes with one single (yet massive!) turbo, and the power output has been increased to an incredible 1,100hp and 1,200Nm! All of this power is sent to the rear wheels only via a 5-speed sequential gearbox, and being a drift car, it’s super light, tipping the scales at around 1,400kg.

As for the Lambo, it’s the Huracan Performante! That means it’s powered by a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 that delivers 640hp and 600Nm. It sends that power to all four wheels via a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1480kg. So it’s slightly heavier than the Red Bull, but it does come with all-wheel drive!

However, should the Lambo prove too powerful, Mat’s also got his hands on a standard BMW M2! It’s way down on power compared to the Red Bull car, with only 480hp & 600Nm. What’s more, this power is sent to the rear wheels only, just like the Red Bull.

The question is, does a car with a deficit of more than 600hp really stand a chance?! There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

00:00What will happen in a drag race between a Lamborghini Huracan Performante and a BMW M2?
00:05Which isn't like a normal M2 because it's actually a red ball drift car with an 1100 horsepower.
00:10Anyway, we're going to find out by racing them over the standing quarter mile.
00:13I'm Matt Watson, you're watching CarWang.
00:18Let me tell you about that red ball drift car.
00:20So it's got an S58 BMW 3.0-litre straight-six, but instead of two turbos, it's just got one.
00:24But it's a massive turbo and means that you've got 1100 horsepower and 1200 newton-metres of torque.
00:30Drives the rear wheels only via a five-speed sequential gearbox.
00:34Quite like that car. Weighs in at about 1.2 tonnes.
00:37So it's going to be quick, isn't it?
00:38Although how quick, I'm not sure, because it's a drift car, which means it's designed to spin up its wheels.
00:42Which isn't ideal in a launch, whereas this car, it's got four-wheel drive.
00:46It's got a 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10, 640 horsepower, 600 newton-metres, 7.3 dual-clutch auto with
00:52launch control.
00:53It's a bit heavier than that. It weighs in at this much.
00:54What's going to happen? Let's have a drag race and find out.
00:57Pause the video now to compare the stats of these cars side-by-side.
01:01I am ready for a drag race. Are you ready for a drag race, Elias?
01:04Can I warm the tyres a little bit or cold tyres?
01:07Cold tyres? My tyres are cold. Same for both of us.
01:11Okay, copy. Then let's do them on cold tyres. That's fine.
01:14Okay.
01:21Oh, he's launched a bit better.
01:50Damn, that's fast off the line.
01:52I'm just noticing your centre caps are still spinning.
01:56That was disastrous for you.
01:58Yes, this was disastrous, but the tyres were completely cold, so let's see if we put some heat in, if
02:03something else happens.
02:04Maybe. But this thing is really, really quick off the line.
02:07Oh, okay. So once it's going, it's going.
02:09Okay, let me give you the opportunity to warm up your tyres by doing some other races, okay?
02:12We're going to do a rolling race first off, okay?
02:14Then we'll come back to the drag racing in a bit.
02:16But as far as I'm sitting, you've got no chance.
02:17Do you think you're going to have a chance later on with your tyres warm?
02:20I mean, I'm an athlete by heart, so I will fight until the end.
02:23It was a big gap, to be honest, but I had, like, basically no traction from the start line.
02:28So I think once the tyres stopped spinning, it looked like the gap stayed the same.
02:33It looked like, but let's see.
02:34Now we can have a rolling race from 50 miles an hour.
02:37Second gear roll on.
02:38Three, two, one, go.
02:44Oh, he's going that way.
02:55Oh, heck.
03:03That's fast.
03:07That's really fast.
03:12If he gets his tyres warmed, things could be interesting.
03:18I didn't enjoy that.
03:19A tiny bit, a tiny bit.
03:21Maybe I was screaming inside the car.
03:23Yes, I did.
03:26All right, calm down.
03:28Don't get too carried away.
03:29Let's do another race.
03:30This time, first gear rolling 10 mile an hour, because that will require traction.
03:36We'll see how much heat you've got in your tyres,
03:37because you might just end up spitting them and drifting all the way down the runway.
03:41Star's going to start us.
03:42Once again, race to the half mileage.
03:45Let's do this.
03:47Copy.
03:49Three, two, one.
03:52I can tell he's anti-lacking.
03:54Come on now.
04:03Yes.
04:09Oh, he's coming now.
04:11Come on, can I beat you the whole pile?
04:12Don't flip a gear change.
04:13Come on, come on, come on.
04:31Oh, he just had me.
04:33That smells, by the way.
04:35I can smell race fuel.
04:37You just had me.
04:39Just, just, just, just, just, just.
04:41Oh, yeah.
04:42I spun the tyres in first gear again a lot, but then once the grip came, I got you.
04:47Now, what we'll do next, we'll heat your tyres up a little bit.
04:50We're going to do a brake test, okay?
04:51100 miles an hour.
04:52Stay level with me.
04:53See which car stops in the shortest distance.
04:55Drift cars aren't known for braking well.
04:56In fact, your brake discs look smaller than standard.
04:59Correct.
05:00They are smaller.
05:01We save some weight, because we don't need the brakes.
05:03We normally brake by going sideways.
05:04That's why we make them as small as possible, as light as possible.
05:08You're going to enjoy this, they're not.
05:23Oh, look at that.
05:29Oh, it was rubbish.
05:31Oh, dear.
05:32Oh, poor you, Elias.
05:34That was terrible.
05:35Yes, yes.
05:37Drifters don't know how to brake in a straight line, and the car is not built for that.
05:41I didn't even need to try.
05:42I could have just slowed down using engine braking alone, by the looks of that.
05:46Right.
05:47Let's get to the drag race now.
05:49Before we race, Elias, let's do a sound check, see which car sounds the best.
05:52I'm going to rev up my V10.
05:59Yeah, quite good, quite good.
06:00Now the straight six, first without anti-leg.
06:09Kind of boring, isn't it?
06:10But now, with anti-leg.
06:17All right, you won that, but can you win the drag race?
06:19Well, if you want, go and do a donut around the Car Wow donut bush, come back, then you
06:25have no excuses about your tires being too cold.
06:27Gone.
06:50Geez, can't even see him.
06:56Right, let's see if we can drag race through the smoke.
07:02Oh, no.
07:04Got ya.
07:20Is he coming back now?
07:21No, no.
07:22No, no.
07:22But smoky tires.
07:33That initial launch, I just can't get it down.
07:36Let's go one more time.
07:37Try one more go.
07:44No chance.
07:59Power corrupts.
08:11This is just getting quicker.
08:13You got absolutely dropped again, mate.
08:15Listen, do you know what?
08:16I'm going to humiliate you slightly now, I think,
08:18and prove to you that you can have too much power.
08:21I'm going to get a standard M2.
08:23If I beat you in a drag race with a standard M2,
08:25you need to hang your head in shame.
08:29Okay, that's the deal.
08:30Let's try it.
08:31It would be okay for me because this is my first drag race experience,
08:34so I'm okay with that.
08:37Let's do it.
08:37I'll show you how to drift in a minute as well.
08:39So this will be very embarrassing.
08:41I'm in a normal M2.
08:42I have a mere 480 horsepower and 600 newton meters of torque.
08:47I do have launch control, but my car's rear wheel drive like yours.
08:51If you lose now, I think you need to resign and maybe go work in a library.
08:57I feel the pressure, Matt.
08:58I feel the pressure.
08:59So let's see what I can do.
09:01Yeah, I paint down the beach a little bit and hopefully improve my skills a little bit
09:05with the trouble in the third year.
09:06I didn't catch any of that, but I think you said,
09:10yes, I will resign and become a librarian because that's actually been my second dream job
09:14after being a drifter.
09:17Okay, gotcha.
09:18Oh, come on.
09:20If I win this, it's going to be brilliant.
09:21Three, two, one, go.
09:27Oh, my God.
09:29Bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye.
09:39Keep going.
10:08Little bit of W down and he can pass.
10:10to catch you i think it's only going to get worse for me but i'm not sure
10:13i reckon if i time it better off the line i've got him maybe maybe
10:25come on
10:34oh my ties are spinning there
10:40ah am i gonna do it it's coming now
10:49i've literally got no chance
10:57congratulations you won that one this is a decider may you get no traction
11:08i think he said he's learning from me like being gentle on the start
11:11i'm not i've just got launch control i have no finesse or skill he obviously doesn't watch the
11:23channel oh he's got a really good start that time
11:32but that's his best start yeah i know he's going that's an amazing start
11:49nothing i could do about that
12:05you won that but ultimately you need to beat the lamborghini i'm going to bring
12:08the lambo back in and let's see if you can beat the lambo yeah you you let me gain some
12:12experience
12:12and the last launch i would say was also the best one that i've done but i think the lambo
12:17is a
12:17really really hard class let's see all right then elias this is it winner takes all winner takes all
12:35let's see if you can beat the lambo
12:45oh
12:53jump 10
12:54jump 10
12:58you just needed an extra 10 meters but you didn't have it and so you lost unfortunately but it was
13:05close wasn't it i thought you might have me but you just ran out of room and there we go
13:09so then
13:10what exactly happened well the lamborghini just beat the drift car by the narrowest of margins
13:15but they both completed the standing quarter mile in 10.6 seconds the standard bmw m2's best time
13:22was 11.8 seconds i will go back practice my starts practice my throttle application in first gear
13:30and do some engineering stuff to the car and hopefully come back at some point yeah i think
13:36you might need to do quite a bit of engineering and move it from a drift car which is all
13:39about
13:39no traction to a drag racer which is all about traction and so welcome to come back i hope
13:44you all enjoyed the video everyone listen i've got to say huge thanks to elias and red bull for
13:48sending that car and also to shawn's garage check out shawn's garage on instagram for lending us
13:53his hurricane perfamante now if you want to see a amazing red bull drag race meet you in a hyper
13:59car
13:59an amazing red bull car click on that video window there it's a brilliant video one of the best i've
14:03ever ever filmed and it gives you an idea of whether race cars are actually better road cars for drag
14:07racing if you haven't done it already make sure you subscribe to this channel and as ever thanks
14:12for watching and i'll see you next time
