08:57Within the last few minutes, police have confirmed that they're investigating allegations of damage to the plane that carried the

29:42After that Scotland game, was that the first time you were able to go back to the hotel
29:46and start to think, you know what, I really believe we can win this tournament?
29:49Yeah, I did think, I felt it all the way through.
29:53Tell me about your relationship with Terry Venables.
29:57Was it him that you signed for?
29:58Well, I remember he said, look, if you signed for me, I guarantee you're playing for England 10 games.

30:04And he was right, you know?
30:05But it was just all the time, he said, like, if I was getting on his nerves,
30:08he would just tell us to go run for a little bit and kick the ball about it, you know?
30:12And then he knew when he put his arm around.
30:14Like, sometimes, I knew I had a great game, and he'd say, well, crap, did he?
30:17And then when I played crap, he would tell us it was brilliant.
30:20So you couldn't work him out, and then I just realised it would start working.
30:23I think Terry Venables was one of those where he could be one of the lads,
30:27but yet there was a fine line, how far you could take him.
30:30And to me, from a football point of view, he simplified things.

30:34He just gave you that kind of mentality that he wanted to win for him.

30:39Every time we'd watch all these different teams, and then he would always show Holland.
30:42You know, and he always said, like, you know, the Holland game's going to be the key game.

30:56That journey from the hotel to Wembley was something special, wasn't it?

31:03And then to go in and put a performance like that, it was, for me,

34:45And with less than two hours to go before England take on Spain in the Euro 96 quarterfinal,
34:51thousands of fans have been pouring into Wembley.
34:53Before 96, I mean, an England game could be a scary place to be.
34:58The worst hooligans from every club in the country would go and watch England.
35:03And the only chanting I remember was like, that I could repeat, is like, no surrender to the IRA and
35:08stuff like that.
35:09I mean, really quite dark, scary stuff.
35:12I would say it started to change in 1990.
35:171996, in a lovely way, was the kind of apex of a new way of going to a football game.
35:21It still stands out, Euro 96, as the last event that we had that the nation could sort of come
35:28together with.
35:32Not for 30 years has there been such expectancy.

35:54You were, you were El Tell, that was how you were known in the media in England when you went
35:59over to Barcelona.

36:10I was there three years and I know all about Javier Clemente.

36:17We've had a few run-ins and he's a tough cookie.

39:27How confident were you with a team or a squad like that, that we could do well?
39:31Well, you want the big attitudes, the guys that, you know, are not going to blow up or are going
39:39to be frightened of this.
39:41And if you've got captains, you've got leaders, you've got guys that will say, take the rest over the cliff.
39:46That was the biggest thing, is if I could have all captains, I think to myself, well, the others will
39:53follow on.
39:54I had looked around the changing room and I thought, well, we haven't just got fantastic players here.

40:56That semi-final remains the biggest game I've ever played in.
40:59The atmosphere and the build-up was just indescribable.

41:05I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

41:16I think there was a real sense that that was essentially the final,
41:19because if we beat Germany, we can beat the Czech Republic.

41:28England are on their way to Wembley, and the winners there will play the Czech Republic.
41:33England team know what they have to do, exactly the same as their predecessors in 1966.
