Safety drills have been introduced in Asian schools to strengthen security and emergency preparedness.

Students in Philippines' San Rafael participated in the Nationwide Simultaneous School Safety Drill on Thursday.

The event highlighted the Department of Education’s continuing efforts to strengthen school safety, security, and emergency preparedness.

The exercise brought together Department of Education officials, local government leaders, and public safety and disaster response agencies to test how schools and emergency responders would react to various threats and emergencies. ( Video courtesy of Associated Press )

00:00We have seen the effect of this kind of threats in two schools already, in Tacloban and in a private
00:07school in Ateneo.
00:09So, and I think the common denominator with the experience of these two schools is that
00:15hindi alam o hindi handa yung school, how to respond to this kind of incident.
00:21Through this exercise, we want our schools to be, number one, to be aware,
00:25to be able to recognize this kind of threats and to be able to respond in terms of the drills,
00:33not the exercise.
00:34What to do, where to go, how would the responders be able to do their roles, do their part.
00:43It's a new reality of the country. We're preparing for all kinds of emergencies from human-induced to weather-induced.
