Thai schools step up shooter drills after deadly attack

Thai schools on Wednesday (August 19) stepped up active shooter drills in the two weeks since a shooting killed at least eight, as authorities push to strengthen safety measures. The "run-hide-fight" drill began with a briefing for students at a secondary school in Bangkok, followed by a simulated mass shooting inside the building, with an officer dressed in black and armed with an assault rifle and handgun playing the role of the gunman. The drills follow a recent education ministry directive signed on August 10 by Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong, requiring schools to draft security plans and rehearse emergency response procedures. Schools have stepped up daily security checks, including the use of metal detectors and conducting bag searches, as part of the wider safety measures. Onitcha Kochana, director of Surasakmontree School, said the training gives students the knowledge and awareness to respond if a real emergency ever occurs.
