Turkey have one point from two games, Belgium have three. The winner is likely to qualify in second place behind Italy.
Transcript
00:00A 7-0 win over South Korea and Geneva, four years to the day since they've bowed out of Euro
00:0596.
00:07Four teams are certainly through, two definitely out, ten unsure as we head concurrently into matches, 17 and 18 of
00:16Euro 2000.
00:17Group B the first to wind up here this evening, Sweden playing catch-up in Eindhoven, Turkey need a win,
00:23Belgium are for now in charge of a situation which may fluctuate as the evening goes on.
00:28And David, I know that through the tournament, and indeed prior to the tournament, you have become quite a Belgium
00:33fan.
00:34Well, I've had the opportunity to see them, this is the third occasion, they play with a very good shape,
00:39there's a good understanding in the team, they've got a good spirit and they're a very fit side.
00:49Turkey, Les Duneiden, Forming are playing in their chain strip, which is a mostly white Belgium of course,
00:54in the strip of the Red Devils.
00:57And they have caught the mood of their nation by departing from their traditionally turgid selves,
01:04and playing some impassioned football, not least here from Horn.
01:08And now from Impenza, who's had a go early.
01:13There is a thrust about the way they play.
01:16Yes, they've started all the games quickly, good tempo, although they lost an early goal against Italy.
01:21It was put to him and he said, well I won't have to play against Maldini this evening.
01:30Well, Maldini, up with Alpine, and winning it for the hand, and giving it to Impenza!
01:38Two strikes inside the first two minutes from Emil Impenza for Belgium.
01:44Didn't quite get a hold of it, but immediately Belgium are looking to cut through the three centre-back formation.
01:53He was asked whether, this time, it had been selected by the coach driver.
01:59Nellis is setting off and going, a terrific pace for Belgium!
02:03And it's a good stop at his near post, strong wristed from Luke Nellis by Rooster.
02:08My word, he showed a turn of foot there, a rather surprising turn of foot.
02:1333 years old now, Luke Nellis, been a wonderful player for Belgium.
02:17Set for Birmingham next season, and John Gregory, if he's watching, will be pleased with that movement.
02:25The performance of a host nation with the expectation so immediate to it.
02:34Starland has gone to the near post, Oguna way.
02:40Deflange.
02:41Van der Hagen.
02:43Look at the space for Hoare.
02:45Wilmot's going outside of him.
02:47Bart Hoare has got himself and got a deflection!
02:51Terrific effort, foot over the ball, coming in on the inside, but it was Wilmot's who made the space.
02:57He went on his outside on a selfish run, there you see the run.
03:00On the inside, Bart Hoare, it got a deflection.
03:03And you can't help feeling that if the Turkish defence is breached, then there could be plenty of goals in
03:09this game tonight.
03:11Hakan Suka there, ploughing a little bit of a lone furrow and still not looking too happy.
03:17Over the top again from Penza to chase and a frightening communication breakdown between Oguna and his goalkeeper.
03:23It came wide from Nillis.
03:26Verheer.
03:28Wilmot's!
03:29Charged down by Fatih.
03:33And over the bar from Van der Hagen.
03:35Well, I think we've already seen more goal efforts in this game than many of the others in one half.
03:41There's Wilmot's, super volley.
03:43He's been a fantastic player for me personally in this tournament.
03:46He works so hard, he's got great technique, good team player.
03:5231 years old, he's got plenty of years left in his tank.
03:55Italy against England, Germany or Romania.
04:04Wilmot's, that's a smashing ball, but Nillis was half a yard ahead of himself.
04:08The flag is up, and Penza's turned it in.
04:11The flag was up a long, long time ago.
04:14Hold the party.
04:16Stick the court back in.
04:20With Penza still dropping.
04:25Well, I think the Belgians thought they deserved the goal, because it was such a good move.
04:30Here we see his level when the ball is played forward to him.
04:35When Nillis stumbled a little bit, I think it was Bart Hoare who hit the shot,
04:38and when it came back off the keeper, Penza dispatched it.
04:41Arif.
04:44Faced by Valhara.
04:48Arif.
04:48That's a poor ball.
04:51By van der Haag.
04:53Arif.
04:59Tuga.
05:00Hakan Sukho.
05:01Hakan Sukho.
05:02It's a good save by De Wilder, as they all stood and watched and waited for a flag that didn't
05:07come.
05:09It was clever play by the centre forward.
05:11Here we see them moving up, but he's level when the ball is played, he's onside.
05:16De Wilder very, very quickly off the line, and a wasted opportunity.
05:21Vaheja.
05:24Vaheja.
05:26Vaheja ahead of Mpenza.
05:32Vaheja.
05:35Wilmots.
05:38Milis in for Mpenza, who couldn't get there.
05:41On back by Starles.
05:43Van Kerkhoven, cleverly away there from Oka.
05:47Milis.
05:48Milis.
05:58Oh, it's a fine effort through the legs of the defender.
06:12Alpair's ball in.
06:14Hakan Sukho for Turkey.
06:16And a dreadful mishit by Oka.
06:20It was that fellow who teed it up.
06:24He fell, laid it on a plate for Oka.
06:28I think it was Alpair that knocked the ball in.
06:30Very long, very deep.
06:31Very poor defending there by Valharen.
06:35By Tugay.
06:39Forward by the flange.
06:42Out by Ogil.
06:44On towards Arif.
06:48Still Arif for Turkey.
06:50Terrific run by Arif!
06:58The Turks said they had it in them to overcome Belgium in their own backyard.
07:03And they have created the better chances.
07:05Well, that was a magnificent run.
07:08That was meant, it looked as though he was going to stumble and fall.
07:11He retained his balance.
07:12And then with the side of his left foot.
07:16The Milis was cut out by Suat.
07:19That was a good shot of the Belgian backline.
07:23Trying to play right up the field.
07:25Not too concerned about any pace.
07:27Behance ball in.
07:30And Hall getting a connection.
07:32Which represented a fantastic athletic effort.
07:35By a player who had to be going up full pelt to get anywhere near the initial delivery.
07:42That's a good ball in.
07:43He's had a good first half.
07:44The wide right player.
07:46Turkey will presumably discover at half of the game.
07:49Half time.
07:49But they are within a goal now.
07:51They are within a goal of the quarterfinals.
07:55It is within their gift.
07:56This is a nasty up and under for De Wilder to watch.
08:00He's under pressure from Hakka Suka.
08:02Who has got there.
08:03And has scored for Turkey.
08:04On the stroke of half time.
08:07And as things stand.
08:08They are quarterfinalists.
08:10That is a body blow for the co-hosts in their own capital city.
08:22Hakka Suka.
08:25Chasing on to the ugliest.
08:28Up and under.
08:29Hakka Suka.
08:30And feeling De Wilder a nasty blow.
08:34Well, the most unconvincing piece of goalkeeping there.
08:38Hakka Suka.
08:39Who we hadn't been too complimentary to.
08:41Or I hadn't been too complimentary to.
08:44Getting such an important goal.
08:46A goal I don't think they really deserve.
08:48It will really put the gun amongst the pigeons.
08:50And make for a magnificent second half.
08:52Belgium had the tempo.
08:54Turkey have got the break.
08:58And we are now in stoppage time.
09:00At the end of stoppage time.
09:02At the end of the first half.
09:07And Belgium are rattled.
09:10Many considered them unlucky against Italy.
09:15Many have grown to enjoy them.
09:17To like them during the course of this tournament.
09:19And those that have grown to like them.
09:21Will have their heads down.
09:23As the half time whistle blows.
09:25Because despite playing.
09:26Another half.
09:27In which they have produced some good.
09:29Trusting football.
09:30They find themselves behind.
09:32To a goal that wasn't pretty.
09:35But was mighty strong from Hakka Suka.
09:37And the Turks.
09:38With all their passion and their belief.
09:41Are within sniffing distance.
09:42Of the last eight.
09:43For the first time in their history now.
09:45In the first half.
09:46Belgium had nine.
09:47So that was a measure of the.
09:49Superiority.
09:50They also had.
09:51I think something like.
09:5260% against 40% of possession.
09:55So it's not always true.
09:57That possession is nine tenths of the law.
09:59But I can expect Belgium here.
10:00To give it a real good shot.
10:02And it wouldn't surprise me at all.
10:03If they're capable of getting at least two.
10:06Well I can tell you that Italy and Sweden kicked off their second half in Eindhoven.
10:10Quite significantly before we have restarted this game.
10:15So we will know probably before the end of this game.
10:20What is required in its dying stages.
10:22And in the early stages of its second half.
10:25Mark Wilmot has been sent flying.
10:26And Belgium who must score now.
10:29Have a free kick.
10:35Foul was by a tight call.
10:37And the fourth official is Mr. Rossi Ruski on the other front screen.
10:42Luke Niles is over the set piece.
10:46Just right of centre.
10:48Three in the Turkish wall.
10:55Niles shaping to the back post.
10:57And Rustu was momentarily indecisive.
11:02But watched the ball behind for a goal kick.
11:13De Flandres ball in.
11:17Pog!
11:22He's convinced they've got a deflection.
11:25He had a sight at goal.
11:27There could have been a little push there by Niles there.
11:29Maybe.
11:30Or the two Turkish defenders.
11:32Bumped into each other.
11:33He hit it on the half volley.
11:34The ball was just rising.
11:37Turkish set of forward.
11:38Credit Suka there.
11:39He was only inches away from getting across three Belgian defenders.
11:42To get on to Arif's pass.
11:45Niles.
11:49He slipped away.
11:50Niles with the cross.
11:52Oh, Penza!
11:53Oh, what a save!
11:56That was goal bound.
11:58It was firm.
11:59It was downward.
12:00Everything was right.
12:02The save was fantastic.
12:04Fabulous invitation from Niles.
12:07And a tremendous reflex save.
12:11Best save I've seen in this tournament.
12:14Belgian corner.
12:15Niles with it.
12:16Wilmot's going up.
12:17It's come out of a hail.
12:27And Kerkhofer.
12:30And Kerkhofer.
12:48An absolute tease for the centre half.
12:51Has raised his game for Niles.
12:57Awkward one for Roost who again made contact which was the minimum requirement.
13:04And a harder.
13:06And a harder.
13:06De Floog.
13:08De Floog throwing it in.
13:10Oh, Penza!
13:14Getting closer.
13:17There's going to be waves of attacks.
13:20The Penza free and clear.
13:24Couldn't quite steer it inside the post.
13:28Belgian must be patient.
13:32Mustn't lose concentration at the back.
13:34That can be the only danger.
13:35Pushing men forward.
13:36Niles.
13:38Mpenza.
13:39Emile Mpenza.
13:42Van der Haagher.
13:44And stabbed just wide.
13:46By Hendricks.
13:48Whose impact on the game.
13:49As the recently introduced substitute.
13:52Has been notable.
13:54Very notable.
13:58Wasn't offside.
14:00Just stuck a leg out.
14:06Mark Hendricks of Genk.
14:07Who is rumoured to be interesting.
14:10Ajax of Amsterdam.
14:11In desperation now.
14:13They could be playing a little bit narrow.
14:16And with a little bit less thought.
14:21Side four.
14:24Onside.
14:25Suat.
14:25Hakann Souker in the middle.
14:27It is going to be Hakann Souker!
14:34A comfort zone for Turkey.
14:37Who are treading new territory here.
14:44What seemed beyond them.
14:46Is now at their feet.
14:51Well there's nothing the goalkeeper could do about that.
14:53There you saw the.
14:55Belgium backline flat.
14:57We've been speaking about it.
14:58Leaving too much space behind.
14:59Lovely way to pass.
15:01And Hakann Souker.
15:05Perfectly timed movement.
15:07Left foot.
15:09No chance for the goalkeeper.
15:12The dramatic scoreline.
15:14A hugely dramatic scoreline.
15:16And one that.
15:18In all truth.
15:19We couldn't possibly have thought of.
15:24It's Portugal for them next.
15:26It's Portugal for them next.
15:27If they stay as they are.
15:29De Wilder.
15:30Bewilder.
15:35Belgium need two.
15:37If Belgium can get a draw here.
15:39Just to reinforce the situation.
15:41If Belgium can get a draw.
15:42They will be in the quarterfinals.
15:48Sweden are still 1-0 down against Italy and Eindhoven.
15:52And if Turkey win by two.
15:54Then Sweden would have to win by two.
15:55And 3-1 would take them through.
15:57They need three goals as things stand.
16:01Probably safest.
16:02Though in these situations.
16:04Loving is safe.
16:04It's probably safest to write Sweden off now.
16:07I've got a feeling I'll regret those words.
16:09Here's Wilmot.
16:10It's that kind of night.
16:12To Flandre.
16:16To Flandre is balling.
16:18Chance.
16:23Luke Nillis only gets the corner.
16:25Second prize.
16:27Rostow first prize.
16:29Once again a great save.
16:30Same tackle ball.
16:32Big deep cross.
16:36There's the corner.
16:37On by Stalins.
16:42And Strupar at the back post.
16:46Referee is giving the corner.
16:49Which you've got to put down as one of his more interesting decisions.
16:56Play it forward.
16:57And hold the ground.
16:59They're not going to get brought out of position.
17:04Wilmot's.
17:06Hit from Van der Haagher.
17:09The hundredth risk he did well to get his whole frame.
17:18But the Turks are reddling in this.
17:27Hakann Souka has played it.
17:29He's in here.
17:30It's a chance to polish it off.
17:33And he has hit the advertising boards.
17:37Arif.
17:37Who has had so much to do with Hakann Souka's success.
17:44And was onside.
17:46You can see quite clearly now the...
17:50Mpensa.
17:52Van der Haagher.
17:54To build up.
17:57Well he lost his feet as he hit the shot.
17:59Whether there was contact or not.
18:01And Arif again has got clear of the square defence.
18:03And again De Wilder has come.
18:05Arif has gone down.
18:06The card is going to have to be a colour which concerns Philippe De Wilder.
18:12It is red.
18:17Well what a sad ending it.
18:19You know you were accurate.
18:22But I have to say the ball was going towards the touchline.
18:25Was it a goal scoring chance?
18:27It's a difficult one.
18:29And it's probably irrelevant to the game at 2-0.
18:32And I must say David.
18:33Whether or not a goal scoring chance.
18:34It was a neck high tackle.
18:36Yes it was.
18:40And that is a guy.
18:41And on a humour level you feel sorry for him.
18:44Because he's had a rotten old time.
18:46Arif is hurt.
18:50To Willer will be hurting inside.
18:52But look.
18:53You see he's done damage to the player.
18:56We don't know whether Arif is having it up or otherwise.
18:59But he has to go for that.
19:06Sad evening for the host country.
19:08Sometimes in tournaments like this it's a great boost if they can get through.
19:13Putting to closure in goal.
19:15Things have turned so sad for them this evening.
19:18The crowd are disappearing in groves now.
19:21They came in so much hope.
19:23Which was justified really.
19:25That poor man he's going to get pilloried.
19:28He is.
19:28And I just have to make a point David.
19:30That they have made their three substitutions.
19:33Belgium.
19:33Which is why De Flange of the full back is having to take over goalkeeping duties.
19:42Here we are close to a result of great consequence.
19:46Rooster has come.
19:47And if better is to him.
19:49Every time he's come.
19:50Almost without exception.
19:51He's got something on the ball.
19:53Hasn't made a misjudgment at all.
19:54He's been brave.
19:59That will do for Abdullah.
20:00It's a Belgian throw.
20:05But they're playing time that doesn't really exist now.
20:09And Penta has lifted it in.
20:12Came out to Van Kerkhoven.
20:22There's almost an eerie silence from the Belgian supporters.
20:25They're stunned.
20:30And Penta.
20:32Aimed at Wilmots.
20:33No one deserves progress more than Mark Wilmots.
20:37But you don't always get what you deserve.
20:39And who's to say that Turkey don't deserve this?
20:41No.
20:41They've defended very well.
20:42And they've got the brakes at the right time.
20:44And have taken advantage of the brakes.
20:46You've got to give them credit.
20:48Van Kerkhoven playing it in.
20:49The builder going up for it.
20:52Wilmots.
20:57And Penta.
21:01Six players out of the game now.
21:04Another break on.
21:06Good play.
21:07They have three against three.
21:10To make it.
21:113-0.
21:12Ergu.
21:18And again Ergu.
21:20Hakan Suka has gone towards the back post.
21:24Good defending.
21:28By Valhara.
21:31It's not what they had planned.
21:34It's a quiet night in in Brussels for those who live in Brussels.
21:38Those visiting may be on the streets till dawn.
21:44Wonderful for Turkey.
21:45Just wonderful for Denizli.
21:48A new achievement for a relatively new footballing nation in major competition terms.
21:54And for the first time in history.
21:58A host nation has failed to make it through the initial group stage.
22:04Hakan Suka.
22:05If he was the hero in Istanbul.
22:07And points beyond in Turkey before tonight.
22:10Sure is now.
22:12And Denizli.
22:13Who was an anti-hero for many of the supporters.
22:16For much of the media.
22:17For so many critics.
22:19Has now been lifted to a status beyond his dreams.
22:22Rustu made one wonderful save during the course of the game.
22:26And the Belgians who began so impressively a week and a half back.
22:29Who caught the imagination.
22:31Have now been caught out on the counter attack.
22:34By a Turkish team that was canny.
22:37And took its chances.
22:38And caused it all to end in tears for De Flandre.
22:43Who ended up in goal.
22:45In a ten man sad, sad Belgian side.
22:49These are Turkish smiles.
