How Did Israel and Palestine Become Enemies? 🤔

The Israel-Palestine conflict is rooted in more than a century of competing territorial claims, wars, displacement, and disputes over Jerusalem. From the end of British rule and the creation of Israel in 1948 to the 1967 war, Oslo Accords, and Hamas’s rise in Gaza, repeated attempts at peace have failed to resolve the core issues.

Why do you think lasting peace has been so difficult to achieve? 👇

00:00Why has the Israel-Palestine conflict lasted for so long, and why is finding peace so difficult?
00:06To understand today's tensions, we need to go back more than a century.
00:10As we delve into the historical context behind this ongoing conflict, it's crucial to understand
00:16that the strife between Israel and Palestine has persisted for generations.
00:22The current hostilities are rooted in issues and animosities that have evolved over decades
00:27of struggle.
00:30To comprehend how it all began, we must travel back to the aftermath of World War I when the
00:36British Empire assumed control of the region known as Palestine, a narrow strip of land
00:42situated between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea.
00:46During that era, Palestine was home to an Arab majority and a Jewish minority, both of
00:52whom laid claim to historical Palestine as their rightful land.
00:56This complex situation posed an immediate challenge.
01:00The 1920s through the 1940s witnessed a significant influx of Jewish immigrants to Palestine, seeking
01:08refuge from persecution and the horrors of the Holocaust.
01:12This migration further heightened tensions with the Arab population.
01:16In 1947, the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states,
01:23designating Jerusalem a city of profound religious significance to both sides as an international
01:30entity.
01:31While Jewish leaders accepted this plan, Arab leaders rejected it, setting the stage for
01:38a protracted impasse.
01:39In 1948, the British recognized that they could not resolve the conflict and withdrew.
01:46Jewish leaders, with the support of then-US President Harry Truman, subsequently declared the
01:51establishment of the State of Israel.
01:54This declaration was met with opposition from many Palestinians, leading to a full-scale war.
02:01Neighboring Arab nations, including Jordan and Egypt, joined the conflict, marking the beginning
02:06of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
02:09The consequences were devastating for Palestinians, with hundreds of thousands forced to flee.
02:14By the time the fighting ceased in the following year, Israel had gained control of a significant
02:20portion of the land, Jordan occupied the West Bank, and Egypt took control of Gaza.
02:27Jerusalem was divided, with Israeli forces in the west and Jordanian forces in the east.
02:34Significantly, no formal peace agreement was reached, and blame for the ongoing hostilities
02:40was placed on both sides.
02:43Fast forward to June 5, 1967, when the Six-Day War erupted, leading to a redrawing of the map.
02:52Israel captured and occupied the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and other Arab territories.
02:58Notably, the majority of Palestinian refugees and their descendants reside in Gaza and the
03:05West Bank, and Israel has not permitted their return, citing concerns about overwhelming the
03:11country and jeopardizing its identity as a Jewish state.
03:16Presently, Israel still maintains control over the West Bank, and the United Nations continues
03:23to recognize it as occupied territory.
03:28Turning our focus to Jerusalem, a city of immense religious significance to Christians, Jews, and
03:34Muslims, we encounter another contentious issue.
03:38Israel claims the entire city as its capital, while Palestine asserts that East Jerusalem
03:45is the capital of its future state.
03:48Over the past five decades, Israel has established settlements in Jerusalem where more than 600,000
03:55Jews now reside.
03:57Palestinians contend that these settlements violate international law.
04:02Numerous attempts at achieving peace have been made over the years, commencing in 1979 and culminating
04:09in the 1990s with the Oslo Accords, where Palestinian and Israeli leaders engaged in negotiations regarding
04:17a two-state solution.
04:19Initial optimism gave way to frustration and mistrust.
04:23By the year 2000, violence had once again erupted, undermining the prospects for peace.
04:30In 2008, hopes for a peaceful resolution were dealt a severe blow.
04:35The most recent peace plan was introduced by former US President Donald Trump in January 2020.
04:42While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to it as the deal of the century,
04:48the Palestinians regarded it as one-sided and dismissed it.
04:53Consequently, tensions have remained exceptionally high, especially in East Jerusalem, Gaza,
05:00and the West Bank.
05:01Since 2007, Gaza has been governed by Hamas, while Israel has maintained strict controls around the territory.
05:08The conflict escalated dramatically on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel,
05:16killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded with a major military campaign in
05:23Gaza, causing widespread destruction, displacement, and loss of life. A ceasefire reached in October
05:282025 reduced large-scale fighting and led to the release of the remaining hostages. But the conflict
05:34remained unresolved. Disputes continued over Hamas's disarmament, Israeli withdrawal, humanitarian access,
05:40and Gaza's future governance. Violence also continued in the West Bank. Today, efforts remain focused on
05:46achieving a lasting political settlement, but major disagreements over security, territory,
05:50governance, and Palestinian statehood continue to stand in the way of peace.
