00:00I don't think geraniums will ever go out of style, so if you want more of these beautiful
00:05timeless plants without having to pay for more, let me show you how to propagate them.
00:14Taking geranium cuttings is a really simple job that just takes a few minutes and it's
00:18a great way to create new plants to enjoy next year. I have got a healthy geranium plant that
00:24I'm going to take cuttings from, my clean secateurs and some terracotta pots filled with some peat-free
00:31potting compost. Start by selecting a healthy non-flowering side shoot. You want it to be about
00:38three to four inches long and with your secateurs cut just below a leaf node. So I'm going to cut
00:45exactly where this side shoot joins the main shoot here. Now we're going to prepare these cuttings
00:51before we plant them. So the first thing we want to do is remove any leaves, any of these side
00:57shoots
00:58here and you can see here that there's a flower bud coming out on the top of this. We want
01:03to remove
01:03that as well because we want all of the energy within this cutting to go into forming roots
01:08rather than creating that flower. Here I've got two pots filled with peat-free compost. If you wanted you
01:16could add a little bit of grit in there as well just to improve the drainage and then taking my
01:20pencil
01:23out. I'm going to make a little hole for the cutting
01:27and place it in and then just firm the soil around that. We'll do the same for this one
01:41and we're just going to give them a really light watering and place them somewhere nice and light
01:46and bright but not in the direct sun. In a few weeks your plants should start to develop roots
01:54and new growth. Now this cutting is one that I potted up about four weeks ago and you can see
01:59here we've
01:59got lots of fresh new growth all the way up the stem so that tells me that there's lots of
02:04healthy root
02:05growth going on underneath the soil. I really love taking geranium cuttings because it's like you're making
02:11the next generation of your favourite plant. So you can pop this up and when it starts to grow you
02:16can
02:16give it to a family member and it's a really meaningful gift.
