00:02In New York, Luigi Mangione's state murder trial will not begin next month after all,
00:08and now a judge will decide whether that case can go forward at all.
00:13The trial had been set to begin September 8th, but the judge has now taken it off the calendar
00:18as Mangione's lawyers tried to get the state charges thrown out.
00:22Their argument? Mangione has already pleaded guilty in federal court to conduct tied to the same killing
00:28and prosecuting him again would violate New York's double jeopardy law.
00:33Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking charges and for the first time admitted in court
00:38that he killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
00:42He told the judge, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died. I knew what I was doing was
00:48illegal.
00:49The gunman shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December of 2024.
00:53Surveillance cameras captured the shooting.
00:55Mangione still faces second-degree murder and weapons charges in the state case,
01:00and Manhattan prosecutors say they will fight to keep that case alive.
01:04They now have until October 9th to respond to the defense.
01:08The next state court hearing is set for December 10th,
01:11eight days before Mangione is sentenced in the federal case,
01:14where prosecutors say they will seek life in prison.
