A major development has emerged in the PIMS Hospital fire tragedy in Islamabad.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the suspension of eight officials and directed criminal proceedings against those identified in the interim inquiry report following the fire that claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies.

The inquiry found major gaps in fire-safety arrangements, including the absence of a fire alarm and sprinkler system in the neonatal ward. The report also highlighted shortcomings in emergency procedures and training.

Nurse Razia Noreen, who risked her life to save one newborn, has been approved for the Sitara-i-Khidmat award along with a Rs1 million cash reward. Officials said 15 babies were in the ward when the fire broke out and only one was rescued.

The government has also ordered action against the hospital's security company and its officials, while further investigation into the tragedy continues.
