00:00:00It was, and we did a nice job.
00:00:01I thought we disguised coverage.
00:00:03Jackson Kouach was lined outside the left hash,
00:00:05and right at the snap he took off and was running to the other side.
00:00:09We moved coverage on Ripon.
00:00:10He didn't kind of recognize it.
00:00:12The ball sailed.
00:00:12We get a pick, and sure enough, we're able to get another first down.
00:00:16Felipe Franks, a night catch and run, able to get a field goal.
00:00:19Those are the things that you're constantly working on.
00:00:22Now, right here, situational for the defense.
00:00:24They're going to try to do a shot play.
00:00:28Instead, a draw play.
00:00:30It's Owen Wright.
00:00:31Bears out of timeouts, and that's Texans.
00:00:34Texans, my goodness, Texans.
00:00:37Thank you.
00:00:38I love it.
00:00:38And we're going to have to tighten up.
00:00:40Someone's ready.
00:00:41I've drawn.
00:00:41Someone is ready.
00:00:43How many flags now?
00:00:44Flag on the play.
00:00:48I'll take the 15 from Steve.
00:00:51You know what?
00:00:52I think you're a lot like Manny Panther fans right now.
00:00:56Oh, 6-3.
00:00:57Panthers on top of the Texans.
00:00:59Texans.
00:01:00Texans.
00:01:01Great job.
00:01:12This is nice weather compared to Indiana.
00:01:14It's probably like 9 degrees right now.
00:01:17Pickett, who got the start today.
00:01:20Final preseason game.
00:01:22Panthers 6, Texans 3.
00:01:23As we get ready for the start of the third quarter, we've got the Keep Pounding High School Classic.
00:01:30And it's named after, in many ways, Sam Mills, who coined that phrase.
00:01:36You guys were there for, you know, that speech before that playoff game against Dallas, which
00:01:41still resonates at the very ethos of this franchise.
00:01:46No, I think it does.
00:01:47And I was a huge fan of his growing up because he played for the New Orleans Saints, and he
00:01:51was part of the famed Dome Patrol.
00:01:54And I know, Steve, we can talk about Sam Mills.
00:01:57I mean, he's what every Panther player should want to strive to be.
00:02:01Yeah, he's the staple.
00:02:03He is the standard.
00:02:04Sam Mills is always inspired and encouraged just what he was.
00:02:08He coached and inspired players that weren't even on the same side of the football.
00:02:15So, I love it.
00:02:17And most of all, for us to keep pounding, Sam would tell you, Anish, it's the Houston Texans.
00:02:26Keep chopping wood.
00:02:27Keep pounding.
00:02:28We got the second half.
00:02:29He was a special guy, man.
00:02:30He was a special guy.
00:02:31He was revered by everyone and never wanted.
00:02:34And at that moment of the keep pounding speech, I don't think we truly understood the magnitude
00:02:39of it.
00:02:40We did not.
00:02:40We did not know.
00:02:41But it just, you heard it, and we were going to win the next night.
00:02:46I mean, there was no doubt.
00:02:47But, like, as it went on, you're like, my gosh.
00:02:49The cool story for me is always the day, unfortunately, Sam Mills passed is the same morning my son,
00:02:57Boston Smith, was born.
00:02:58So, you know, they're always talking about family.
00:03:00One great man leaves.
00:03:02I believe another great man enters.
00:03:08John Mechie flagged out.
00:03:15I think we'll get a hold here.
00:03:17Yeah, we could have got one penalty.
00:03:20It could have been three or four.
00:03:28During the return, holding, receiving team number 45, 10-yard penalty from the spot of the foul,
00:03:35his first down, Carolina.
00:03:37That is Mumajang Mehta.
00:03:39We've said his name quite often tonight, mostly for good things.
00:03:46Kyle Trask out there for the third quarter along with Trey Tyus.
00:03:54Anthony Tyus, the third.
00:03:59Team high nine carries, 39 yards.
00:04:01Last week, six carries, 18 yards.
00:04:05In the first half, neither team has really had a big run.
00:04:08No team's had a run longer than seven yards.
00:04:19Out of the pistol.
00:04:23Trask downfield, and that's Jasim Reed, who turns it in for a big gainer.
00:04:28That was a nice operation by Trask.
00:04:30There was a lot of moving parts of the line of scrimmage.
00:04:32He had to take a receiver from one side to the next, bring in for short motion.
00:04:36We inserted, great job by Jasim Reed of making the safety miss,
00:04:41trying to hit him going into the hole.
00:04:43Nice job making the catch.
00:04:44Good throw by Kenny.
00:04:45Nice start to the second half.
00:04:47And as he's going down, securing the football,
00:04:49knowing that he may have the opportunity with the ground being wet,
00:04:53that he could pop out.
00:04:54Didn't want to risk it.
00:04:55Great, smart play by a young man.
00:04:57A pickup of 20.
00:05:02Underneath.
00:05:04That's hauled in.
00:05:05It's Felipe Franks for seven more.
00:05:07Texans brought pressure.
00:05:08Kyle recognized it.
00:05:09Catches the snap.
00:05:10Get the ball out immediately.
00:05:12Just make something positive happen.
00:05:14Don't hold it too long.
00:05:15Get it out of your hand.
00:05:16Really nice job.
00:05:18Now it's second and three.
00:05:19Playbook's completely open.
00:05:21You know, I really love, and I think it's really cool,
00:05:23and seeing Brad this, and understand and see
00:05:26what the defense is going to bring them.
00:05:29Don't always see that.
00:05:30And you see Bryce Young helping out his teammate,
00:05:34Jimmy Horn Jr.'s necklace fell off.
00:05:38We've seen runs like this all preseason from Trey Tyus.
00:05:42Breaking tackles, feet churning, as Bryce...
00:05:46Told you he's fixing his necklace.
00:05:48He's a man of all seasons.
00:05:49He can do it all.
00:05:50Yeah.
00:05:50He's fixing Jimmy Horn's necklace.
00:05:57Did you play with a necklace?
00:05:59I don't recall.
00:06:00Yeah, I actually played with...
00:06:01I played with a rope, and it had a cross on it.
00:06:05Okay.
00:06:05The same one my whole career.
00:06:07Solomon Bird, if they injured a Texan, will step aside.
00:06:16Panthers lead the Texans 6-3, preseason finale.
00:06:20First down and 10 from the Carolina 45.
00:06:23Anthony Tyus, the third, gets the call.
00:06:27Picks up a couple.
00:06:29Dave Canales and his team, along with Dan Morgan,
00:06:33will have to trim the roster to 53 by 6 p.m. Sunday.
00:06:36And then, don't forget the practice squad.
00:06:39You get 16 players, up to 17,
00:06:42if a player from the International Player Pathway Program
00:06:46is on the squad.
00:06:48At least 10 of the players have to be first or second year players.
00:06:52And then you can have up to six players
00:06:55with unlimited NFL experience.
00:06:58Yeah, certainly a big change from way back when
00:07:01and Steve and I's day,
00:07:02when it was five guys on the practice squad.
00:07:04And those seats were, they were hard to come by.
00:07:07Well, it was actually four
00:07:07because we had the international guy.
00:07:10So the international guy became the practice squad,
00:07:11so it was four.
00:07:13So it's, now you have 16,
00:07:14and then you can add the veterans.
00:07:16And I think that helps during the course of this season
00:07:19because with 17 games, there's going to be injuries.
00:07:21Guys are going to miss.
00:07:22And so you can have some of those guys available.
00:07:29And take a guy like Jasim Reed.
00:07:31He's one of the slot receivers.
00:07:33He was a practice squad player for the Panthers last year.
00:07:38Made some strides in his development.
00:07:40Jimmy Horn Jr.
00:07:41Great catch.
00:07:42Into Texans territory.
00:07:44It sets up fourth down and about four.
00:07:46So you're talking about weight.
00:07:48That had nothing to do with weight.
00:07:49He was able to see his vision is getting up there.
00:07:53He was able to see the guy whipping around.
00:07:56That's confidence.
00:07:57Understanding and knowing what I really feel like Jimmy is doing right now.
00:08:02He's finally figured out, why am I running this route?
00:08:06Why is the coach calling this play?
00:08:09And what do I do with the football?
00:08:11He's got juice, man.
00:08:13It's a different juice than a lot of people being, right?
00:08:17Lewis Bond bobbled it.
00:08:20The Texans able to recover.
00:08:23Safety?
00:08:23But they will get up the real two-yard line.
00:08:27That's a bad one because Lewis Bond is one of those guys, just like John Mechie.
00:08:32He's a guy that's fighting for his job.
00:08:35And he comes out there, didn't catch football.
00:08:38He did not catch punts in college, at Boston College.
00:08:41And now, all of a sudden, he gets an opportunity.
00:08:44Yes, it's always great to do it in practice.
00:08:48Is that one, Steve, you want to?
00:08:51There were 12 players on the field on the defense.
00:08:54Oh.
00:08:54That five-yard penalty is administered and results in a first down.
00:08:58So I can tell you exactly why he, when you come back from break, I can break down why he
00:09:05dropped that punt.
00:09:06All right.
00:09:07That's a tease from Steve.
00:09:08We'll be back after a word from your local Panther station.
00:09:18To your gut so you can absorb the hit from the ball.
00:09:23The Texans had too many men on the field.
00:09:25There you go.
00:09:25And that penalty gave the Panthers a new set of downs.
00:09:29And then Trey Tyus rips off the longest run by anybody today.
00:09:33It's a game of about 17.
00:09:35It's a first down.
00:09:36We bring in Dan Morgan, the general manager of the Carolina Panthers.
00:09:40You've got a busy couple of days, Dan.
00:09:43Cuts.
00:09:43It comes down to 6 p.m. Sunday.
00:09:46As you make that final decision, what matters?
00:09:50Is it position group?
00:09:51Is it the individual?
00:09:52Is it the probability they get claimed by somebody else?
00:09:55Like, what's at the top of the pecking order as you trim the roster?
00:09:58I think first and foremost, special teams is going to be the biggest thing, especially for the back-end roster
00:10:06guys.
00:10:07Special, you know, if you can't play on special teams, then, you know, it's tough to make the team.
00:10:14Flags down on the screen to Jimmy Horn.
00:10:45I want to talk about Jimmy Horn.
00:10:47I want to talk about the staff here of he's embraced his opportunity.
00:10:50Yeah, I think you just said it.
00:10:52It's all about opportunity.
00:10:53And he's got the opportunity to go out there and make plays and showcase what he can do.
00:10:58And he's been out there making plays.
00:11:01And, you know, that's what it's about as a wide receiver as Steve knows.
00:11:05You know, you've got to go out there.
00:11:06You've got to make plays.
00:11:07And he's done that.
00:11:09Dan, you've seen with Brazel going down, it was already going to be a difficult decision being made.
00:11:18These young guys haven't made it easier for you guys either.
00:11:21It almost seemed like with Brazel going down, it's made some of the young guys that were maybe on the
00:11:27depth chart
00:11:27to kind of push some of the other guys like Xavier and some of the other guys as well.
00:11:32Talk about that healthy competitiveness that's been developing in this wide receiver.
00:11:37Yeah, you know, I think there's, you know, a legit seven guys that can make our team right now.
00:11:42And, you know, it's coming down to the wire.
00:11:45And these games matter.
00:11:47They do matter.
00:11:48So, looking at what these guys are doing out here tonight, Jimmy Horn making plays out there.
00:11:54Just seeing making plays out there.
00:11:55I'm sure Mechie's going to get going here soon.
00:11:58So, we have a lot of capable guys.
00:12:00It's a good problem, though.
00:12:02You know, we have a good problem on our hand with, you know, having some wide outs that can make
00:12:06plays.
00:12:07And, you know, there's another guy right there, Casey Washington.
00:12:10He's another good player.
00:12:11And he's made plays every opportunity that he's got.
00:12:15Hey, look at this.
00:12:16They run this play.
00:12:17And Jimmy Horn, Jr., you talk about, is clicking.
00:12:20He runs through the outside shoulder of the corner
00:12:23because they want to throw the ball to the outside.
00:12:26But the Houston Texans are playing that defense.
00:12:30So, utilizing and understanding.
00:12:32Again, I said he understands the why he's running the routes now.
00:12:36And you love to see that in a wide receiver.
00:12:39Yeah, and that's part of seeing him grow and develop.
00:12:41You know, you've got to let these guys develop.
00:12:43And Jimmy's another case where he's developing.
00:12:46How about the way Felipe Franks has come on as a pass catcher?
00:12:51We knew what he could do on special teams.
00:12:53Yeah, he's a really good teamer, but he's been balling.
00:12:56Did this happen?
00:12:57Was there anticipation when you signed him back as a special teamer?
00:13:01We know.
00:13:01But was there an anticipation he'd be that?
00:13:05I think I'd be lying if I said that I thought he could be as good of a receiver as
00:13:11he's been.
00:13:12And, you know, so he's really made a case to, you know, get playing time on offense as well.
00:13:17Dan, we'll stick with the tight end group after this play.
00:13:20That's where a lot of the drama between now and Sunday at 6 p.m. seems to lie.
00:13:27A fake.
00:13:30Hit him.
00:13:32Oh.
00:13:33Incomplete for James Mitchell.
00:13:36So, Darren Waller was added to the group during camp.
00:13:43Dave Canales has said, you feel like you've got five on the roster.
00:13:45Teams don't generally take five.
00:13:47Feels like you've got seven wide receivers.
00:13:49Teams don't generally take seven.
00:13:51And then Haynes King at quarterback, right?
00:13:54Yeah.
00:13:55Seven million people watching that first game and going to get everybody in the NFL.
00:13:58So, as you try to figure out, like, how many you need for each position,
00:14:03one domino in one spot will have a trickle-down impact.
00:14:07So, how do you piece that jigsaw together?
00:14:09You know, again, they're good problems, right?
00:14:12You know, we're talking every day.
00:14:15We're evaluating our roster every day and figuring out how we're going to put all these pieces together.
00:14:21And it's not easy because you want to keep your good players.
00:14:25So, we've got to sit down and we've got to keep talking through it and figure out, you know,
00:14:29where the numbers make sense, who's going to help us on special teams.
00:14:33There's a lot of factors that go into it.
00:14:35So, we've got a lot of work ahead.
00:14:36With Waller, we have yet to see him in a preseason game.
00:14:39How game-ready is he?
00:14:41He looks good out there.
00:14:42He's in great shape.
00:14:44You know, he's out there running routes and he's not tired at all.
00:14:48He looks good.
00:14:49He looks – he can run still.
00:14:52He catches the ball really well.
00:14:54I think he's going to be able to help us out this year.
00:14:56And, you know, how soon that is, I don't know.
00:14:58But he looks really good so far and we're happy with him.
00:15:02I see the smile on Tracy Smith.
00:15:04We just had him on camera.
00:15:06I guess he's happy all the guys you helped him out with special teams.
00:15:10Because there's a lot of teams, guys, that have given themselves the opportunity to make this roster.
00:15:13Yeah, and you can – you know, you can only keep so many special team guys on your roster.
00:15:18But we have a lot of good ones out there.
00:15:21You know, Isaiah Simmons.
00:15:22We talked about Felipe.
00:15:25You know, you go down the roster, there's a lot of guys that can help us out on special teams.
00:15:30But, you know, it's going to come down to, you know, if you're the fourth, fifth, sixth receiver,
00:15:36are you going to be able to play special teams and help us out?
00:15:39Same thing goes for the other positions as well.
00:15:41Dan, how do you manage with this offensive line situation?
00:15:47You got two – you got two of your starters out that will contribute.
00:15:52However, you still need to develop.
00:15:54And some of your guys are developing.
00:15:56They're getting back a little bit after injuries as well.
00:15:59Yeah.
00:16:00So how do you balance in going into the season but not giving up on you guys
00:16:05but at the same time you got to have some quality backups and maybe possibly upgrade as well?
00:16:10Yeah, you know, we got two really good linemen that are on the sideline right now.
00:16:15And luckily we got lucky with Rasheed Walker and then drafted Monroe Freedling.
00:16:21And then obviously we have two really good guards that we're happy with.
00:16:25So bringing Luke Fortner in at center, he's been really good.
00:16:30So, yeah, we got to figure out the depth piece of it right now until we get Timo and we
00:16:36get Icky back.
00:16:37But once we get them back, we're going to have some good problems on our hands.
00:16:41Yeah.
00:16:42Ryan Fitzgerald with his third field goal of the night.
00:16:46Panthers lead the Texans 9-3.
00:16:49Dan, can you stick around?
00:16:50Yeah.
00:16:51All right.
00:16:51Dan's going to snitch at roof above.
00:16:54And you'll see in the Hall of Honor the great Sam Mills who's Dan Morgan, you got to know quite
00:17:01well.
00:17:02You played for him.
00:17:03And we were talking earlier about, you know, Jake and Steve and you were there, too, when the key pounding
00:17:09speech manifested.
00:17:11Yeah, we definitely miss him.
00:17:14He was a great coach, but, you know, even a better man.
00:17:17You know, great player, obviously, but definitely missed and, you know, still miss him to this day.
00:17:25We're talking with Dan Morgan, Panthers general manager.
00:17:33Ripon's still in there at quarterback and a short run on first down.
00:17:37Scoring drive brought to you by Factory Motor Parts.
00:17:41Panthers scoring on their last drive, their third field goal of the night.
00:17:45Felipe Franks had a hand in it.
00:17:4914 plays, 77 yards, 7.48 off the clock.
00:17:54Well, Dan, let's get back to kind of your task at hand over these next few days.
00:17:58You look on the defensive side, a lot to choose from from the defensive backfield.
00:18:04Again, is special teams kind of a deal breaker there?
00:18:06Yeah, I think it is.
00:18:08And, you know, Isaiah Simmons, he's one of the guys that's really stood out on teams.
00:18:13And, you know, you see him growing every day as a safety, too.
00:18:16So I think the DB group is looking really good.
00:18:19We're happy about where we're at right now.
00:18:22And, you know, we'll see how the cut down goes.
00:18:24But linebacker-wise, we know the battle's up for who's going to be on the side of Devin Lloyd.
00:18:30And both Claude and Chairless and Trevin Wallace played tonight.
00:18:33And they both made plays.
00:18:34They both flashed tonight.
00:18:35So I know that's going to be a difficult decision for the coaches to make.
00:18:40But you have to be proud that, hey, you're playing the last game.
00:18:43We're continuing the evaluation.
00:18:45Well, they certainly – the lights weren't too bright for them tonight.
00:18:48Yeah, and that's what we wanted to see.
00:18:50You know, you saw Trevin out there making plays, putting his pads on people.
00:18:53Same thing with Claude out there.
00:18:55Both of them blitzing and being disruptive out there.
00:18:58And that's what we're looking for.
00:18:59And, you know, it was good to see that tonight.
00:19:02Well, you're talking about the second – we're talking about the secondary.
00:19:05We're talking about the linebackers.
00:19:07Tell us some of these guys that you'd like to – that you want to see
00:19:10or you've seen thus far down in the hog mommies right there with the big fellas.
00:19:15Yeah, I think you saw Cam Jackson out there.
00:19:17You know, he's a big body.
00:19:19He's hard to move.
00:19:19So it was good to see him out there tonight.
00:19:22Guys were having a hard time blocking him.
00:19:25He was making some plays out there, eating up blocks for us linebackers.
00:19:30You know, Harrison Hunt's another guy that we're keeping a close eye on
00:19:34and seeing how he's developing and progressing during training camp.
00:19:37And so, yeah, it's a healthy competition in there and a good group of guys.
00:19:44So what about the progress, I guess, that Jackson Kuwach is making?
00:19:49You see him getting held and making a play.
00:19:51Like, we've seen him make a play one week, another play.
00:19:54It's starting to grow.
00:19:56Yeah, he's really smart.
00:19:57You know, he can play the Mike spot.
00:19:59He can play the Will spot.
00:20:01He's going to be able to wear that green dot.
00:20:04He's got really good instincts, anticipation.
00:20:07He moves well in space.
00:20:09Those were all things we liked about him, you know,
00:20:12when we drafted him in the seventh round.
00:20:14So he's making a lot of progress, and we're really happy where he's going.
00:20:17Hey, a guy like that, you see the school he comes from,
00:20:21does that help you when you start to see that, hey,
00:20:25this is a player who understands multiple positions?
00:20:29Is that something next year you guys go in and say,
00:20:31hey, when we had this type of player,
00:20:33he really seemed to understand the NFL game.
00:20:37Yeah.
00:20:37And then you start to kind of go back to those schools
00:20:39instead of saying, hey, he was an outlier.
00:20:43Maybe they do have some good coaching
00:20:46or they're teaching some philosophies that we want to continue to keep looking at.
00:20:51Yeah, for sure.
00:20:52And when we interviewed him in the pre-draft process,
00:20:54you know, you could tell how smart he was,
00:20:56like putting him on the board, talking X's and O's,
00:20:59like he was really sharp.
00:21:01So we were blown away by him after we interviewed him.
00:21:05And, you know, and then you get to know him as a person
00:21:07and what makes him tick.
00:21:08And the guy loves football.
00:21:11He's obsessed with the process,
00:21:13all those things that you look for in linebackers.
00:21:16So he's still learning and growing,
00:21:18but we're happy with where he's going.
00:21:20Fourth and one after the virtual measurement.
00:21:24The Texans line up to go for it.
00:21:26Norfolk Dan after this play.
00:21:42Quarterback sneak moves the chains.
00:21:44Dan, I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you,
00:21:46because it's been in the news.
00:21:48Was there anybody who came to you and asked to be cut
00:21:51so they can go back and play in college?
00:21:53No, no.
00:21:54Fortunately, no.
00:21:55But, yeah, that's kind of wild that that's happening.
00:21:57But fortunately, it hasn't happened to us.
00:22:01Do you look at prospects differently?
00:22:04Because, you know, the college games changed a lot.
00:22:06There's so much money that a lot of these kids get.
00:22:09There are guys who are taking pay cuts now to come to the NFL.
00:22:12Yeah, for sure.
00:22:13Does that change how you evaluate players?
00:22:16I think it's part of the process.
00:22:18I think you've got to look into all that.
00:22:20You know, it's a case-by-case basis.
00:22:22It can be a really good thing, too,
00:22:24because, you know, those guys have money in their pocket.
00:22:27They're used to what it's like having money.
00:22:30So we're not getting those guys, you know,
00:22:32the first time they're getting the big paychecks from us.
00:22:36So we can see what they did with that money before,
00:22:39how responsible they were, or did they go blow it.
00:22:43So, yeah, I think there's some good and bad in the NIL.
00:22:49You said working guys up on the board.
00:22:52I don't think I had the opportunity,
00:22:54or they weren't doing that as much when me and you were coming out.
00:22:57Yeah.
00:22:58They say working on the board.
00:22:59What do you mean by that, but not giving away too much?
00:23:03Yeah, I mean, just putting them up on the board
00:23:04and, you know, them talking through their scheme.
00:23:08And, hey, not only what you do,
00:23:11but what does the other guys on the defense do?
00:23:15So he's able to explain what the safeties are doing,
00:23:18what the corners are doing, what the front's doing,
00:23:20and, like, the fits and, you know, the coverage responsibility.
00:23:24So, like, you're able to sit there and you're, you know,
00:23:27you're kind of blown away by some of the IQ that a lot of these guys have,
00:23:31the football IQ that they have up on the board.
00:23:34That's awesome.
00:23:35Thank you for clearing that up.
00:23:36So we had the extra preseason game, us in Arizona.
00:23:41How much of a benefit is that to us,
00:23:44having those nine extra practices,
00:23:46those four extra padded practices,
00:23:48and helping determine this roster and find out exactly who we have?
00:23:52I think one of the biggest things I've noticed, you know,
00:23:56having the Hall of Fame game, having that extra week,
00:23:58is our guys are in shape.
00:24:01Like, they're in football shape right now.
00:24:03They're ready to go into week one, play a full 60 minutes.
00:24:09So I would say that's probably the biggest thing other than the young guys
00:24:13being able to get the reps and just, you know,
00:24:16the chemistry of the team.
00:24:17You can really feel it coming together.
00:24:20I think every day you just see these guys coming in.
00:24:23They love working with each other.
00:24:24They're having fun out there, and that's what we want to see.
00:24:28Dan, I'll leave you with this.
00:24:30Before Sunday, 6 p.m., you've got people also watching all the other teams.
00:24:35Give us just a little sneak behind the curtain how that works
00:24:39because the roster cuts are not staggered anymore.
00:24:42They're all at once.
00:24:43So with that volume of players being available
00:24:47and giving your waiver priority now not as high as it was a few years ago,
00:24:51how do you kind of manage that kind of volume
00:24:54and see who potentially could help?
00:24:57Yeah, I think our pro scouts, led by Lee McNeil and Jarrett Kirksey,
00:25:02they do a great job.
00:25:03You know, each scout's responsible for a certain amount of teams
00:25:08that we allocate to them, and they're watching everybody.
00:25:12They're writing countless reports on these guys.
00:25:16I think we have, you know, anywhere from like 800 to 1,000 reports
00:25:19in the system right now of guys.
00:25:22If they get cut, we've got a report.
00:25:25We have meetings all the time on it.
00:25:27So we're going to be prepared.
00:25:29You know, no matter who gets cut, we're going to be ready to go.
00:25:32Oh, that's a lot of reports.
00:25:34It is.
00:25:36Fairbairn for the field goal.
00:25:40Hooks it through.
00:25:42Dan Morgan, Panthers GM.
00:25:44Good luck this weekend.
00:25:45Thank you for joining us.
00:25:47Appreciate it, guys.
00:25:47Thanks for joining us.
00:25:48Good luck.
00:25:48Thanks.
00:25:509-6, your score.
00:25:52We're back after a word from this local Panthers station.
00:25:58Oh, I want to talk about it.
00:26:01We'll talk about it after Carla.
00:26:03Okay.
00:26:13And the Panthers will bring it out to the 35.
00:26:16Carla?
00:26:18Yeah, here with Trayvon Merrick.
00:26:19Obviously not playing tonight, but you've been watching.
00:26:22You've been a part of the process tonight.
00:26:25Tell us kind of what your takeaways have been as somebody that's preparing for the regular season.
00:26:30Man, just guys going out there, you know, laying it on the line, you know, just trying to put good
00:26:35tape out there, you know, enjoy the moment, you know, because a lot of people, you know, know, they want
00:26:42these moments back and try to, you know, make the best of them.
00:26:44So it's just good to see them go out there and have fun.
00:26:46When we talk to the coaches about you, they say you're a man of few words, but you say it
00:26:51with your pads on the field.
00:26:52I got to know, like, where does your play style come from?
00:26:56I don't know.
00:26:57I think that's just who I am.
00:26:58Like, I wouldn't say I'm just, you know, totally quiet on the field, but I do try to let my
00:27:03play do the talking and then, you know, just try to be myself.
00:27:07So, you know, I kind of get that a lot, though.
00:27:10So it's not uncommon to hear that.
00:27:12Nick Scott, a teammate of yours, said that you and Lathan Ransom were like the Bash brothers, like on the
00:27:17Mighty Ducks.
00:27:18Do you adhere to that nickname with him?
00:27:20Yeah, I dig it.
00:27:21I dig it.
00:27:22It's definitely cool.
00:27:23You know, it's just a testament to our play style.
00:27:26I mean, not just us, too.
00:27:27I think in the safety room we try to, you know, instill that mindset of just a physical group.
00:27:32But, yeah, me and Lathan, man, we, you know, we share a lot of the same qualities in how we
00:27:36play the game.
00:27:37So it's been fun.
00:27:38And then they've also told on you about your music selections and kind of the alternative rock, the things that
00:27:42you really like.
00:27:43So for today's game, what was the pre-game playlist?
00:27:47What was on it?
00:27:49Honestly, it wasn't no rock today.
00:27:51It was back to rap.
00:27:53I couldn't even tell you.
00:27:55But I haven't gotten back to alternative just yet.
00:27:59Thanks, Anish.
00:28:00Marig taught himself how to play the guitar.
00:28:04Wow.
00:28:04There's a lot of musically inclined players on this roster.
00:28:08Marig, Darren Waller now, Jalen Phillips.
00:28:13That's pretty good.
00:28:14We have come to the end of the third quarter.
00:28:18Fifteen minutes remain in the preseason for the Carolina Panthers.
00:28:26Kyle Trask trying to keep it rolling.
00:28:29Philippe Franks and the Panthers pointing forward.
00:28:33We go to the fourth.
00:28:37Panthers are brought to you by Bank of America.
00:28:40Panthers with a decided advantage in passing yards.
00:28:44Carolina with three takeaways.
00:28:46Neither team has found the end zone.
00:28:48All the scoring has been done off field goals.
00:28:53Nine-six.
00:28:54Panthers lead the Texans.
00:28:55We go to the fourth quarter.
00:28:57Third down and three.
00:28:58Carolina.
00:28:59Kyle Trask came into the game in the first half.
00:29:03He's played the entire second half on the slant.
00:29:06And he completes.
00:29:10Rock Taylor.
00:29:11That's our guy.
00:29:13He had a big contested touchdown catch last week.
00:29:15And then the tackle on the following play.
00:29:18Straight job.
00:29:19Great ball thrown onside.
00:29:21Gets inside.
00:29:22Both guys got inside.
00:29:24He just had two options.
00:29:26I'm a big fan.
00:29:28Whenever you have a triple slant or double slant, both sides,
00:29:31I love being under center.
00:29:32I think you get the ball in your hands immediately
00:29:34instead of waiting for the catch off the shotgun
00:29:36because you can be a little late.
00:29:38And that allows the receiver to kind of see what's going on, too.
00:29:42Sometimes it's hard to adjust when you're in the shotgun
00:29:43to see it that quickly.
00:29:45Trask finds his tight end, James Mitchell.
00:29:49And Mitchell for a first down, a gain of 11.
00:29:52That's a great tackle, but unfortunately the tackler
00:29:55might be asleep.
00:30:04Injured player.
00:30:06And we will step aside less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
00:30:11We're back after a word from your local Panther station.
00:30:19Don't miss a snap in 2026.
00:30:21Secure your PSLs and season tickets now.
00:30:24Enjoy access to an exciting lineup of Panthers home games.
00:30:29Solomon Bird, who was the injured player before we went to break.
00:30:35Got up on his own power and was helped off the field.
00:30:38He had been down twice.
00:30:44Trask the handoff.
00:30:46And it's Miles Davis for a short game.
00:30:51Carla Metz is with Robert Hunt.
00:30:54I know.
00:30:55And fans are excited to see Robert Hunt.
00:30:57Obviously not able to play just a couple of games last season.
00:31:00I know you were trying to work hard to get back toward the late end.
00:31:03But to have an offseason, to recover the way you did,
00:31:06to now be fully ready for a new season,
00:31:09how excited are you to be back on the field?
00:31:12I'm pumped.
00:31:13I'm excited to get back out there.
00:31:14It's been a long time.
00:31:15I'm trying to get my feet back going.
00:31:18I'm excited.
00:31:19It's been a long time.
00:31:20I'm really ready to go.
00:31:21What did you take away from last year and just the recovery process
00:31:25and going through that for just the rest of your career?
00:31:30I guess health is, you know, just don't take it for granted.
00:31:35Obviously when you're up and you're doing well and you feel good,
00:31:38everything's going well, right?
00:31:39And then you get hurt and then you kind of sit there
00:31:42and you question everything.
00:31:43But, you know, just don't take it for granted.
00:31:45This beautiful game that we get blessed to play,
00:31:49just don't take it for granted, I guess.
00:31:50I know joint practice this week, maybe not the most positive,
00:31:54at least for the offensive side.
00:31:55But what were the positives from your point of view
00:31:57that y'all were able to take away with the Texans?
00:31:59I think, you know, those guys are good.
00:32:02I give credit to those guys.
00:32:04But, man, I think we did some good stuff in the run game.
00:32:07Obviously I wish we granted a little more.
00:32:09You know what I mean?
00:32:10Just do what we did.
00:32:12But it was fun.
00:32:13I think we did some good things in the run game.
00:32:15I think extended plays, we looked good.
00:32:18You know, and we just learned from that.
00:32:20You know what I mean?
00:32:20That's a good team.
00:32:21We probably won't see a team like that.
00:32:23You know, you ain't going to see that week to week.
00:32:25So, yeah, it was a good time for us.
00:32:27It was fun.
00:32:28We did some things good,
00:32:29but obviously we did some things that we can work on.
00:32:30Let's talk about the O-line now.
00:32:32Obviously you've got some guys that you played with last season.
00:32:36But here you've got Luke, you've got Rasheed, you've got Monroe.
00:32:38How have y'all been able to gel this preseason?
00:32:42We're still doing it.
00:32:43It's going to take time.
00:32:45But we're definitely getting it.
00:32:47This week we practice together the most.
00:32:49We probably have.
00:32:50But it's going to take time.
00:32:52We're getting each other languages down, figuring each other out,
00:32:56learning how Monroe plays.
00:32:57I'm learning how Luke plays.
00:32:58D-Loo's doing the same on his side.
00:32:59And that's what we're doing, man.
00:33:00It's going to be good for us.
00:33:02Thank you.
00:33:03And he's...
00:33:04Jake, when we've worked with Jordan Gross in the past,
00:33:08he's often talked about going up against Julius Peppers
00:33:11as a rookie every day in camp
00:33:13and how that helped him get better.
00:33:16Monroe Freeling, the last couple of weeks,
00:33:20Trayvon Walker, Will Anderson, Daniil Hunter, Josh Hines-Allen.
00:33:26Dave Canales has said that is going to help him get better
00:33:29and get better quickly.
00:33:31No, it will.
00:33:31And, listen, it was a little tough.
00:33:33I practiced on Wednesday.
00:33:34It really was.
00:33:35But it's supposed to be tough.
00:33:37And you're going to learn a lot.
00:33:39And sometimes you just got to get thrown into the fire.
00:33:41And I think he's one that playing at Georgia,
00:33:43playing for Kirby Smart,
00:33:44there's no doubt he was used to being coached and coached hard.
00:33:47And he went against some great players day in and day out at Georgia.
00:33:51And you watched him develop.
00:33:52He's a young player who's going to have a long and really good career in the NFL.
00:33:57And he's going to learn from days like he had on Wednesday.
00:34:00And that's how you bounce back.
00:34:01Rock Taylor.
00:34:03Incomplete.
00:34:04I think I really think that a lot of fans and even beat writers and reporters
00:34:12have this unrealistic expectation.
00:34:15You look at the Houston Texans, they're a top-tier defense.
00:34:19Top five.
00:34:21Created a ton of pressure.
00:34:23You've got a young man who just got out of college.
00:34:26And you're going against pro bowlers.
00:34:29Guys who have massive contracts.
00:34:32And any of those contracts is because they just look good.
00:34:36But, man, I think we are so quick to give our opinion and understanding the process.
00:34:43You want to have those guys do well.
00:34:51The Panthers convert on fourth down.
00:34:54And it sets up a first and goal.
00:34:57I'm like Steve.
00:34:59Who would you rather have?
00:35:00Would you rather have a young player continue to go against guys who may not be playing in this league
00:35:06ever
00:35:08and looking good and then get out there in the first game
00:35:11and go against some top-tier pro bowlers and can't block?
00:35:22Oh, go, go, go.
00:35:25Touchdown.
00:35:27Oh, give it to him.
00:35:29And they do.
00:35:30Yes.
00:35:34Miles Davis, seven steps to heaven.
00:35:38Touchdown for the Jazzman.
00:35:40It's a great job.
00:35:41And his lineman helped push him in there.
00:35:44Look at all the linemen are excited.
00:35:47Convert the fourth down on a direct run right at the defense and then come right back with another direct
00:35:52run.
00:35:53And a great run.
00:35:54Two hands on the ball.
00:35:55And here comes the line pushing them in.
00:35:58Yeah, that's what you like to see.
00:35:59That's what you like to see finished, right?
00:36:00Coach talks about finished.
00:36:02That's one thing you like to see.
00:36:03Look at the excitement of all the guys.
00:36:05Look at Washington.
00:36:09First touchdown of the game.
00:36:14Maybe.
00:36:15After review, the runner was short of the line to gain and the touchdown.
00:36:20Come on, Brad.
00:36:21Take a hand.
00:36:25We take that back.
00:36:26Brad Allen, the head referee.
00:36:28Put him back in.
00:36:29Put him back in and run the same play.
00:36:31Yes.
00:36:31Run the same play.
00:36:34He's going right back in.
00:36:37Put him back in.
00:36:38Give him the football.
00:36:40Miles Davis, undrafted free agent.
00:36:43Out of Utah State.
00:36:44Utah State.
00:36:46I'm rooting for him right now.
00:36:50Hey, who you got this weekend, Jay?
00:36:55College.
00:36:56No one.
00:36:57Next weekend.
00:36:58Oh, okay.
00:36:59Don't you?
00:37:00Raging Cajuns play Lamar.
00:37:03Wait.
00:37:04Out of Lamar.
00:37:05Josh McCown's son.
00:37:06Why are you touching him?
00:37:08He's the quarterback of Lamar.
00:37:09Uh-oh.
00:37:12You don't have to point and touch me.
00:37:15Oh, Josh McCown's son?
00:37:17Yes.
00:37:18I think it's Aiden.
00:37:19It's Aiden?
00:37:19Oh, he's going to tear you all up.
00:37:23We'll see.
00:37:26I know who Anisha's watching this weekend.
00:37:29Who are you watching?
00:37:30The Bears.
00:37:30Because he's been calling the Bears all night long.
00:37:34Utah's playing Idaho.
00:37:36The Vandals.
00:37:37Yeah.
00:37:39Jordan Gross is going to be conflicted because he's from Idaho.
00:37:42Right.
00:37:43He's offensive line coach.
00:37:44He loves it.
00:37:46Offensive line coach at the University of Utah.
00:37:48Yeah.
00:37:48First year as the O-line coach.
00:37:50Coach Davis.
00:37:52He stopped short.
00:37:53Yeah, he did.
00:37:57That's a good stop by Texas defense.
00:37:59This is great.
00:37:59This is what I love to see.
00:38:00Look at the team.
00:38:01If we can get a shot at the sideline, the whole team.
00:38:04Standing up.
00:38:05Is standing up and waiting to cheer for us to get this drive and get it in.
00:38:10That's something that we love seeing.
00:38:12We like being a part of that.
00:38:13This is excitement.
00:38:14This is the excitement.
00:38:16This is what we were talking about.
00:38:20Davis began his college career at BYU.
00:38:24Spent five seasons there.
00:38:26Go.
00:38:27He gets it again.
00:38:29Yeah.
00:38:29Time forward and in for a touchdown.
00:38:33That's what I'm talking about.
00:38:34And the bench loves it.
00:38:38That's exciting, man.
00:38:40That is.
00:38:40NFL last preseason game.
00:38:42We don't know what's going to happen with many of these players.
00:38:47When Robert Hunt was getting interviewed by Carla, Caden pre-score catches a corner out of the
00:38:53tight end.
00:38:54Who greets him when he comes to the sideline?
00:38:56Every single one of the tight ends greet him.
00:38:58From Darren Waller, who just got here.
00:39:00I mean, it's awesome.
00:39:01Look at Bryce Young getting a little dance.
00:39:03Chuba with a dance as well.
00:39:05Chuba.
00:39:07Chuba.
00:39:07Chuba.
00:39:08Chuba.
00:39:09Chuba.
00:39:10Chuba.
00:39:11Chuba.
00:39:12Chuba.
00:39:13Chuba.
00:39:14Chuba.
00:39:14Chuba.
00:39:14Chuba.
00:39:16We've got our first touchdown of the game.
00:39:20After a replay review, a couple more plays.
00:39:24Miles Davis gets it done.
00:39:26Panthers football presented by Atrium Health.
00:39:3116 to 6, Panthers leading the Texans.
00:39:34Kudos to the fans who braved a lot of stormy weather before this game started.
00:39:40841 remaining in regulation.
00:39:43And stay where you are.
00:39:45If you're watching, we might have a chance to see something incredibly unique in the next
00:39:51few moments.
00:39:51So the Panthers, they kick it away.
00:39:54Texans will take the knee.
00:39:56They have it at the 35.
00:39:57We're joined by the loquacious long snapper.
00:40:01Who?
00:40:0240 years old.
00:40:03You said loquacious?
00:40:04Loquacious.
00:40:0519th NFL season.
00:40:06J.J. Jansen.
00:40:07J.J., I just want you to know, everybody in the booth is rooting for a scoop and score.
00:40:13Or a pick six.
00:40:14Because we want to know what's going to happen.
00:40:17I got my helmet.
00:40:18I'm ready to go.
00:40:19Worst case scenario, I got my helmet with me.
00:40:21So I'm good to go.
00:40:23J.J. Jansen.
00:40:25Listen, I don't know if many people know this.
00:40:28I haven't played here since 2009.
00:40:31Name the one teammate that's still playing in the National Football League that was on
00:40:35that team.
00:40:37No more.
00:40:37We were all teammates together.
00:40:39That was a fun year.
00:40:41Jansen.
00:40:42We had a good time together.
00:40:43I was the young buck at the time.
00:40:46Are we going to flag down?
00:40:48J.J., listen, you've got a promising career in media whenever you decide to hang up the
00:40:55football cleats.
00:40:56Do you want to try your hand here at being a field analyst?
00:40:59Oh, absolutely.
00:41:00Let's do it.
00:41:00Let's do it.
00:41:01Well, the first comment I have to make is the coaches are very smart here.
00:41:04In preseason four for the Panthers, everyone's trying to run the ball out here.
00:41:08So that's smart.
00:41:09That's just good coaching all the way around.
00:41:11But, yeah, let's do it here.
00:41:13It's going to be, what, a first and fifth?
00:41:15First and five.
00:41:16Okay.
00:41:16I'm behind a bunch of stuff, so I'm trying to get my bearings.
00:41:19No excuses, Jansen.
00:41:20I know.
00:41:20I'm just telling you.
00:41:21No excuses.
00:41:22Just like a long snap.
00:41:23Oh, my gosh.
00:41:24It's not his fault.
00:41:24Just because you have a record 277 games played.
00:41:29Now I've got the booger can coming by next to me.
00:41:31So we're doing good.
00:41:32The what?
00:41:33The old booger McFarlane can right next to my left here.
00:41:40Play is going.
00:41:41J.J.
00:41:42Hello.
00:41:42Well, I'm not the play-by-play guy.
00:41:43That's a niche.
00:41:44I was laying out for the snap.
00:41:46That's Owen Wright.
00:41:48Good little run there.
00:41:49I mean, look, here's the exciting part about the end of the preseason, right?
00:41:53The starters are ready to go.
00:41:54But you're still seeing guys competing for jobs.
00:41:56And the way the NFL is working now, you know, we've got a 90-man roster that's going to get
00:42:01cut down here to 70, I guess 69 here in a couple of days.
00:42:05Some of these guys are going to play for us in the regular season, not just on special teams, but
00:42:08maybe on defense as we look right now.
00:42:10And so these are meaningful reps for these guys.
00:42:12I'm sure you've been talking about it all night.
00:42:14Yes, we have.
00:42:15But, J.J., I'd like to correct you.
00:42:16Out of your 277 games, there's only 53 on the roster and 46 plays.
00:42:23Oh, he was talking practice squad, too, weren't you?
00:42:25Yeah.
00:42:25Yeah, it's 53 on the roster and 16 practice squad.
00:42:29That's what you were referring to?
00:42:30Yeah, 69 guys and the way it works now.
00:42:33What if we have an international player, J.J., that's 17?
00:42:36Oh, wow.
00:42:36Okay.
00:42:37I mean, what are we doing here?
00:42:39I don't know what the roster's going to look like, but we're going to get at least 69 guys.
00:42:43So let me get this right.
00:42:44Captain Know-It-All doesn't know-it-all directly.
00:42:46I do.
00:42:47I got it right.
00:42:47It was 53 and 16.
00:42:49I had to do some quick math.
00:42:51Live math on air is hard, but I got it.
00:42:53I was right.
00:42:54I love me some J.J. now that I'm retired.
00:42:59You love me when we play together, too.
00:43:01I could not stand you, J.J., when we play together.
00:43:05J.J., how was it having the fourth week this year, the extra week?
00:43:09You switched it up.
00:43:11I did about what I did the other weeks anyway, so I was okay.
00:43:14That's exactly where I was going with that.
00:43:16That's exactly where I was going.
00:43:18And what does your week consist of?
00:43:20Because the world is dying to know.
00:43:21We want to know.
00:43:22It's not all that different than what we're doing right now.
00:43:24It's kind of standing around, watching the guys run into each other for a little bit
00:43:28and maybe hope for a special teams play here or there.
00:43:31As we get ready for third and nine, I want to give Anish a chance.
00:43:34J.J., when you signed up to do this, that's tipped.
00:43:38Uncomplete.
00:43:38Fourth down.
00:43:39Oh, they got a hold.
00:43:40When you signed up to do this, did you think it was going to end up being the roast of
00:43:44J.J. Jansen?
00:43:45He knew that.
00:43:45I'm well aware that the last five or six preseasons have turned into the roast of J.J.
00:43:50I think I got into a fight last week on the sideline in Jacksonville, according to Steve.
00:43:57I get a lot of reports back of Steve tries to keep a close eye on where I'm at.
00:44:01It's usually about roasting.
00:44:04Well, it wasn't a roast.
00:44:05You started this a couple of years ago.
00:44:07You remember when the kicker missed and we went to break?
00:44:10Oh, yeah.
00:44:11Joey Sly, yeah.
00:44:12Yes, Joey Sly.
00:44:13When you started praying for him on the sideline, I knew it was over.
00:44:16It was a tough day.
00:44:18Would you not agree?
00:44:19When the long snapper is praying, hey, bro, stick a fork in him.
00:44:25That was a tough night for Joey.
00:44:26I agree.
00:44:27That was – your analyst work was excellent on that night.
00:44:30That was – you felt it.
00:44:32Off play action right through a mean block.
00:44:34Passes too high.
00:44:36Intended for Sopkiewicz.
00:44:38By the way, J.J., is the defense filibustering for you right now?
00:44:41Hey, I told him, go ahead and try to make this as long of a drive as possible so I
00:44:46could have a little time to hang out.
00:44:47Houston didn't get the memo there.
00:44:49Run play action on first down.
00:44:50I wasn't a big fan of that.
00:44:51Just take the check down in the flat and let's keep the clock going.
00:44:55But maybe it's more time for me to talk.
00:44:57Hey, J.J., I got a – I have a real question.
00:44:59Yeah.
00:45:00So, J.J., is it not true that over the last couple of years, because you've been here forever,
00:45:07that a lot of the top 100 players, a lot of the special teams guys get a hand at voting
00:45:15and you got to go around and ask other players about the position?
00:45:19Is that –
00:45:19No, I think what happens – we've seen a couple kickers, maybe a punter.
00:45:23There's not a lot of us getting on.
00:45:25We definitely stack the ballot box.
00:45:27Like, if we think there's, like, one kicker that might get a chance to get in, we all vote for
00:45:30him.
00:45:30Just to, again, sort of stack the ballot box.
00:45:34Collusion.
00:45:34Yeah, absolutely.
00:45:35The specials are always colluding.
00:45:37Absolutely.
00:45:38Offense number 15.
00:45:40Like, again, like, do they have to call an illegal shift right now in the fourth quarter?
00:45:44Like, that's ridiculous.
00:45:45I know this.
00:45:45What did you make of the replay review in the fourth quarter of the final preseason game?
00:45:50Well, considering that I thought we were in for a touchdown, I was not a fan of it.
00:45:56That being said, it was fun to hear Petey Pablo twice in the – for the first touchdown,
00:46:00I got called back, and then we got a redo.
00:46:02So the more Petey Pablo we can get – I'm the only guy on the roster that knows who Petey
00:46:07Pablo is.
00:46:07So it's been sort of a – it's been a weird roundabout for me with my teammates.
00:46:13Oh, you got young kids now.
00:46:14So you're hip.
00:46:16You're with the pop culture.
00:46:17You were telling me.
00:46:18Well, these guys are all young kids.
00:46:19Petey Pablo is from my generation.
00:46:21Right.
00:46:21These guys don't even know what – I have no idea what they're – my kids are all closer
00:46:26in age to these guys than me.
00:46:28So that – they've got a lot more in common with Luke Jansen and Sarah Jansen than they do
00:46:33their teammate, J.J.
00:46:34So, J.J., speaking as a teammate, has any of the other young kids not knowing who you are
00:46:40when they get here called you coach or asked you for direction somewhere and not thinking
00:46:44they were a fellow teammate?
00:46:45I've had other coaches call me coach.
00:46:47They were so confused.
00:46:48They thought I was on the coaching staff.
00:46:50I've gotten a lot of Mr. Jansen.
00:46:52That's a little uncomfortable.
00:46:54And then inevitably they figure out how old I am.
00:46:57And look, in the more recent years I've – let's see, we've got more time to talk.
00:47:02There's a – he's at completion.
00:47:03Perfect.
00:47:03These guys got it down.
00:47:05I'm growing out my hair.
00:47:06I'm trying to avoid showing a lot of the grays.
00:47:09So all in all, like I'm looking younger now as I get older.
00:47:12So it's all part of the gig.
00:47:14In all seriousness, how does the body feel?
00:47:16I mean, you have 19 years of experience.
00:47:18Yeah, it does.
00:47:18The body feels good.
00:47:20Again, we've talked about this before.
00:47:21I do not do what everybody else –
00:47:23He doesn't do –
00:47:23I don't do all of this other stuff.
00:47:25This looks hard.
00:47:26What you guys did was hard.
00:47:28Your body's in good shape.
00:47:29You still have to run down.
00:47:30You still get blocked.
00:47:31He doesn't run.
00:47:32You have to make a tackle.
00:47:32Most of my –
00:47:33Nobody blocks him.
00:47:35No, they block me.
00:47:36They mostly just try to run over me now.
00:47:38But I mostly spend all of my time just trying to argue with the officials,
00:47:43get a call here or there, get a 12-man-on-the-field thing, that sort of thing.
00:47:48There's so many things running through my head right now with J.J.
00:47:52Anish, we've given you no chance to actually talk about the game.
00:47:55No, listen, this is better than anything I can say.
00:47:58Hey, J.J., I do have a question.
00:48:00Are you still wandering through the locker room trying to see what cleats you can pawn off other players?
00:48:07No, but –
00:48:07Like this is out of my locker?
00:48:08But, hey, great point.
00:48:10Someone found the cleats you gave me.
00:48:12The first time we wore all black jerseys, and it was for Samaritan's feet.
00:48:16We left them at midfield.
00:48:17Somebody walked into Samaritan's feet and signed or saw those signed shoes from the day that you gave me cleats.
00:48:24That happened like a week ago.
00:48:25So those cleats are still in Charlotte, hopefully doing a little bit of good.
00:48:29But those are the one time I shared cleats with you, Steve.
00:48:32The one time – I don't even have them anymore.
00:48:35What do you mean share cleats?
00:48:37I didn't share –
00:48:38You did.
00:48:38You got me a pair of black cleats because we had all black jerseys,
00:48:42and you thought I looked like trash wearing white cleats.
00:48:44So you gave me a pair of black cleats, so I was black head to toe.
00:48:48And, nevertheless, I only got to wear them one game.
00:48:51I left them at midfield with you for Samaritan's feet.
00:48:53Oh, you throw that in there, so now I can't throw a dig.
00:48:56That's right.
00:48:57You got to keep them happy.
00:48:59No, in all –
00:49:01Rip and pull down from behind.
00:49:03In all honesty, J.J., you've been a consummate pro.
00:49:09You've gone about things the right way, and you've just been reliable.
00:49:15Long snapping is not an easy gig, and you've done a really great job.
00:49:18Now, I've watched you over the years pretty much do nothing at practice
00:49:23and still impressed that you've been able to be so clutch,
00:49:28snapping the ball exactly where it needs to be on time.
00:49:32Man, congratulations, bro.
00:49:34I appreciate it.
00:49:35What have you noticed of Coach Canales this year?
00:49:37I know it's still preseason, but not calling the plays.
00:49:40Is there a bigger difference in him during the course of practice?
00:49:43Tour of the end zone.
00:49:44A lot has been made.
00:49:45A flag is down.
00:49:47The catch is good for a touchdown.
00:49:50Zay Jones, the former ECU pirate.
00:49:53I think they're going to get somebody in the back end with an illegal hit.
00:49:56Steve, did you ever get hit in the head back in the day?
00:49:59That never happened to you, right?
00:50:00Get hit in the head.
00:50:02Yeah, it was a lot different.
00:50:04The game was a little bit different back then.
00:50:06Yeah, yeah.
00:50:07That's for the better.
00:50:08But to answer your question, the ruling on the field is a touchdown.
00:50:12As part of the touchdown, it was a personal foul.
00:50:15You go ahead on a receiver, number 27.
00:50:20That's Isaiah Simmons.
00:50:22I think Funderburg took the bigger of the hits.
00:50:25But to answer your question, look, I don't think it's any more valuable on the team than having
00:50:30your head coach be in charge of managing the game on Sundays.
00:50:34There's been a lot made of the offensive play caller hiring that guy as the head coach,
00:50:38and certainly that's a big reason why Dave Canales was hired here.
00:50:41But on game days, on Sundays, you want your head coach to manage the game.
00:50:45That's the most important thing for the team, and he's really leaned into that besides managing
00:50:49the whole group.
00:50:52JJ, this has been a lot of fun.
00:50:54We appreciate you doing this.
00:50:55And the Texans put together a nice long drive to let you go on for a while.
00:51:02Well, keep an eye on the snap here just to, you know.
00:51:04All right.
00:51:05Let's diagnose.
00:51:06Why don't you break down the snap on our way to break?
00:51:10Right down the middle.
00:51:11Perfect snap.
00:51:11Perfect kick.
00:51:12I mean, it's for the bad guys, but at the end of the day, that's all that I ever want
00:51:18to see from the other long snapper.
00:51:19Good snap.
00:51:19I root for blocks.
00:51:21I don't ever root for misses.
00:51:23So if it makes you feel any better, guys at home, I'm always rooting for the long snapper.
00:51:27I have a great JJ Jansen, everybody.
00:51:29JJ has small hands to be a long snapper.
00:51:31They're almost 10 inches.
00:51:33That's pretty good.
00:51:35It might be pretty big.
00:51:37Well, we got another flag on the play.
00:51:40The result of the play is a successful point.
00:51:42It was a personal foul.
00:51:44Whipping the snapper.
00:51:45Oh!
00:51:47Oh!
00:51:47Perfect television.
00:51:49This is...
00:51:49I mean, you can't script that.
00:51:51You cannot script that.
00:51:52JJ.
00:51:53I've been happier.
00:51:54I've been no happier than that penalty right there.
00:51:56We got to protect the long snappers.
00:51:58Protect them.
00:51:59That's the most important.
00:52:00Austin Brinkman, we protect you.
00:52:01They're not real football players.
00:52:03Hey, local.
00:52:04You're local.
00:52:04Get your local right here because JJ can't handle the pressure.
00:52:15There's JJ Jansen.
00:52:17Steve and Jake put him to work tonight, huh?
00:52:20I don't think anybody enjoyed that more than JJ Jansen.
00:52:25I mean, that was just right down his alley.
00:52:27But that's JJ.
00:52:28What you saw tonight, that's him at all times.
00:52:31How about the punctuation at the end of our long talk with JJ Jansen?
00:52:36The drive ends with a roughing the snapper penalty.
00:52:39You can't make that up.
00:52:41No, it's great.
00:52:42You can't even script that in practice to happen.
00:52:45Especially not with the long snappers.
00:52:52Let's take a look at our play of the game brought to you by CPI Security,
00:52:57the official business and home security partner of the Carolina Panthers.
00:53:02It's the Panthers' lone touchdown tonight.
00:53:04Miles Davis from a couple yards out.
00:53:07The bench loved it.
00:53:09Bryce loved it.
00:53:10Jubal loved it.
00:53:11Davis finds his way into the end zone.
00:53:13And now 325 remain in the regular season.
00:53:17Panthers leading by three.
00:53:21Carolina opens the season one week from Sunday.
00:53:30Or I should say two weeks from Sunday.
00:53:35Any idea who we're playing in each year?
00:53:37Yeah, I know who we're playing.
00:53:38Who we playing?
00:53:39It's not Houston, that's for sure.
00:53:42You sure?
00:53:46November.
00:53:46Let's look at November.
00:53:48Always remember what you do in November.
00:53:51The Broncos.
00:53:52That's a pretty good line.
00:53:55Saints.
00:53:56You know, the Saints, we lost twice to them last year.
00:53:59Two games that we just, we didn't play well.
00:54:01You know, it wouldn't like, that's one, I'm looking forward to those.
00:54:03You got the Ravens and Bucs.
00:54:05And then the Bucs, that's a Monday nighter.
00:54:07Ooh.
00:54:08At Tampa.
00:54:09Oh, it's at Tampa?
00:54:11Yeah.
00:54:11Getting to primetime games this year.
00:54:15Yo, the back end of the schedule is tough.
00:54:18But four of the last five are at home.
00:54:21Yeah?
00:54:23No, that's what you want.
00:54:25Hopefully we can start fast.
00:54:26I think that's the one thing.
00:54:28Ooh, look at December.
00:54:30Vikings, see what they have going on to the quarterback.
00:54:32And then obviously the Saints.
00:54:34Bengals.
00:54:35Will Joe Burrell be available?
00:54:38Will Joe Flacco be playing?
00:54:41And then the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:54:42What will happen with Aaron Rodgers and company?
00:54:46Seattle, Sam Darnold, will he be seeing ghosts by then?
00:54:49Or will they be playing well?
00:54:51I don't think he'll be seeing ghosts.
00:54:52I'll just have to say it.
00:54:53Yeah.
00:54:54And then you end that home.
00:54:55That's one thing we saw last year in December when Seattle came here.
00:54:58We felt like, yeah, that's different.
00:55:00I don't think we saw a football team like that yet.
00:55:03That's when that defensive line, they were coming through in waves and like, okay, this team's going to go far.
00:55:10You know, the big thing, and you heard Derrick Brown talk about it early in the game.
00:55:15Dave Canales has talked about it.
00:55:17Just getting off to a good start, right?
00:55:191-0 would mean so much.
00:55:21You think about it.
00:55:22The Panthers have started 0-2 in the last four seasons.
00:55:26You get off to a good start as Keontae Hamilton is down for the Texans.
00:55:32They've had a couple of injuries here in this fourth quarter, but if this team can get off to a
00:55:39good start, there's an opportunity.
00:55:40If you can get that first game at home with the big crowd, Jake, Atlanta, they've got quarterback issues.
00:55:47Steve, you chronicled the Browns quarterback issues.
00:55:50I mean, there's a chance to get off to a really good start to begin the year.
00:55:53There's a great chance to get off to a really good start.
00:55:55If you want to go ahead and try to get going early, this is the schedule to do it because
00:56:02the schedule is significantly harder from what it was last year.
00:56:07And so you've got to look at every opportunity.
00:56:10You've got to win the games that you're supposed to win, and you're going to have to steal and surprise
00:56:15some people.
00:56:16And that's the only way it's going to really happen and things fall in the right place for us because
00:56:22it's a tougher schedule and tougher opponents.
00:56:33And that's the only way it's going to be.
00:56:34Trask in traffic.
00:56:36And that's caught.
00:56:37It's Rob Taylor again.
00:56:42Timeout by Houston.
00:56:44Yeah, it's a fourth down, so they'll get the ball back with an opportunity to tie or win the game.
00:56:48And our fourth man in the booth is right up there, JJ.
00:56:54Субтитры сделал DimaTorzok
00:57:24Субтитры сделал DimaTorzok
00:57:54That's one of the things that we talked about with the coaches
00:57:56That they talk about
00:57:57They say, look, we love watching a player make plays
00:58:00In the preseason
00:58:01In practice
00:58:02But we want to see them do well under the lights
00:58:06And J.J.'s been doing it for 277
00:58:09Soon-to-be-plus
00:58:10Regular season games
00:58:12Under the lights
00:58:13Being consistent
00:58:15Nobody's played in more games
00:58:16In a Panther uniform
00:58:18I think no one's played in a Panther uniform
00:58:20In more games
00:58:21And has done
00:58:22Has had very few tackles
00:58:25Receptions
00:58:29Pancakes
00:58:31Just mentioning it
00:58:33You don't want to give him any love?
00:58:34Yeah, he got 277
00:58:35Okay
00:58:37I mean, you got 277
00:58:39But Avov, he ain't done nothing
00:58:41Play catch with the ball
00:58:42With the kicker
00:58:44Holding
00:58:46Offense
00:58:46Number 49
00:58:4710-yard penalty
00:58:49First down
00:58:50You heard the referee
00:58:52That said hitting the long snapper
00:58:53He can't even hit the long snapper
00:58:55He's protected
00:58:56You guys roughed him up pretty good
00:58:58In that segment, though
00:58:59Oh, man
00:59:00He's a football player
00:59:01Juffing it up
00:59:02He's just so lovable
00:59:03He is
00:59:04He's so lovable
00:59:05You know, Jake
00:59:06We always joke
00:59:08Usually when you say the long snapper's name
00:59:10In a broadcast
00:59:10It's not a good thing
00:59:12We say J.J.'s name a lot
00:59:15Because we like him
00:59:16We do
00:59:17Everyone does
00:59:17And he's a pro's pro
00:59:19He is
00:59:20He's a pro's pro
00:59:21That's the highest compliment
00:59:22That I could give any player
00:59:23I've ever played with
00:59:26Let's see if we can finish this game
00:59:27On defense, right?
00:59:29Holding call
00:59:30Backs him up
00:59:31Two-minute warners
00:59:32Two-minute warners
00:59:33Coming up
00:59:33That one timeout
00:59:34See if somebody can make a play
00:59:37Tackle
00:59:37To Carlos Nicholson
00:59:39In space
00:59:41And the Texans
00:59:42Will not get the playoff
00:59:43So we go to the two-minute warning
00:59:46Two minutes left
00:59:47In this Panthers preseason
00:59:49They nurse the three-point lead
00:59:50At home
00:59:51Panthers football
00:59:52Presented by Atrium Health
00:59:54Third
00:59:54Straight championship
01:00:01Two minutes to go
01:00:03Texans with one timeout
01:00:05With the ball
01:00:07Second down and 13
01:00:09From inside their own 20
01:00:13Brett Rippen is the quarterback
01:00:21Inbound
01:00:22Deuce Vaughn
01:00:23Driven out of bounds
01:00:24They're running the clock
01:00:26They called him in
01:00:31Texans
01:00:32Electing not to use a timeout
01:00:33Maz Blanco
01:00:36Part of that
01:00:37International player pathway
01:00:39With the tackle
01:00:41Third and nine
01:00:47Down the middle
01:00:49In traffic
01:00:49Good pass
01:00:51Thunderbird
01:00:51Broke it up
01:00:52Fourth down
01:00:53That's a great
01:00:55Pass breakup
01:00:56Had time
01:00:57Rippen
01:00:58Let the ball go
01:00:59Thunderbird was able
01:01:00To get that left hand in there
01:01:01That's a very very nice play
01:01:02Local product
01:01:03From Indian Trail
01:01:04North Carolina
01:01:05Who played his college ball
01:01:07On App State
01:01:08And fought through it
01:01:09I just tapped the ball down
01:01:11Fought through it
01:01:12Pulled down
01:01:12Almost slipped
01:01:13Kept his balance
01:01:14Getting up
01:01:15That's a great job
01:01:17That's what you like to see
01:01:18From young players
01:01:19Make some mistakes
01:01:19Some fundamental mistakes
01:01:21But they go ahead
01:01:21And get back on their technique
01:01:24Now this is it for the Texans
01:01:26Fourth and nine
01:01:31Four man rush
01:01:32A deep shot
01:01:34And it's intercepted
01:01:36It's the fourth takeaway
01:01:37By the Panthers
01:01:38There is a flag down
01:01:41And Damani Richardson
01:01:42Comes up
01:01:43With the INT
01:01:45Great job
01:01:47Now the Texans
01:01:48Are pointing toward Carolina
01:01:49Let's
01:01:49See what the penalty is
01:01:51Might be a hold
01:01:53Pass interference
01:01:54Defense
01:01:55Number 41
01:01:56By rule
01:01:57The ball is placed
01:01:58At the spot of the foul
01:01:59Automatic
01:02:00First down
01:02:00So it's DPI
01:02:01And that's to Carlos Nicholson
01:02:03And it gives Houston
01:02:05A lifeline
01:02:07Let me see that again
01:02:14Well I've seen worse
01:02:16Yeah it's unfortunate
01:02:18Because that play
01:02:19Really and truly
01:02:20Damani was there
01:02:21Waiting the whole time
01:02:22That was going to be a pick
01:02:23No matter what
01:02:29Edge pressure
01:02:31Ripping steps up
01:02:32Chased by Garcia
01:02:36Second and ten
01:02:39Well we're getting good quality reps
01:02:41And good pressure reps
01:02:43Meaning this is
01:02:45This is pressure time
01:02:46Who's going to do exactly
01:02:47What they're supposed to do
01:02:47Who's going to stay in their gap
01:02:49Who's going to play the right coverage
01:02:50Who's going to play fundamentally sound
01:02:52When it is tired
01:02:53And you're a little more fatigued
01:02:55I know
01:02:56You know
01:02:56People watching
01:02:57Say it's the last play
01:02:59You know
01:02:59Just throw it away
01:03:01No
01:03:01Give these young men
01:03:02Opportunity to make a play
01:03:04Let's see what they can do
01:03:13Five man rush
01:03:21The way the defensive line shakes out
01:03:26He has the chance
01:03:28To make the 53 man roster
01:03:31He does
01:03:32And you know
01:03:33His name has been brought up
01:03:34Multiple times
01:03:35Multiple weeks in a row
01:03:36By coach Everett
01:03:37He said he's one
01:03:38I'm familiar with
01:03:40And the guy's going to
01:03:41I know what he does
01:03:42I know what he's going to bring
01:03:45And he's showing up
01:03:46At a crucial time
01:03:46That whole left side
01:03:48Collapsed on
01:03:49It's a great job
01:03:50Got a timeout for the Texans
01:03:52So that's telling you
01:03:53They want to
01:03:53Situational
01:03:54They want to use something
01:03:55They used their last timeout
01:03:57Down by three
01:03:58One-on-one
01:03:59This is where
01:04:00A little bit of situational football
01:04:02Last play in the game
01:04:03Some kind of trickeration
01:04:05Double move
01:04:07Eyes on your luggage
01:04:09Look at keys
01:04:10And make sure
01:04:12You don't take the cheese
01:04:27Pressure again
01:04:28The ball is out
01:04:32And Carolina recovers
01:04:34To seal the game
01:04:36Jeremiah Moon
01:04:37With the forced fumble
01:04:40That's awesome
01:04:46Yeah, I love seeing that
01:04:47I mean, I love the sidelines
01:04:48Seeing it
01:04:49The fans that are still here
01:04:51There's a lot of fans still here
01:05:00Jeremiah Moon
01:05:01With the forced fumble
01:05:02And that's a great feeling, man
01:05:05Strip, sack, fumble recovery
01:05:07By the teammate
01:05:08Let's all celebrate
01:05:10Panthers get a win
01:05:11And Cam Gill with the recovery
01:05:12That's his second recovery tonight
01:05:13And Moon has been
01:05:15Just fighting his way
01:05:18Every single time
01:05:20Trying to get in the backfield
01:05:23Trask takes the knee
01:05:26One more will do it
01:05:28So
01:05:28Now the Panthers go three and one
01:05:31In the preseason
01:05:34They open the season
01:05:36September 13th
01:05:38Right here at home
01:05:39Against the Bears
01:05:40Yeah, Jake
01:05:42Excitement
01:05:44Brewing for this 2026 season
01:05:46For Dave Canales and company
01:05:48Here we go
01:05:49Time to buckle up
01:05:50And rock in
01:05:50No, it's time to go
01:05:52And Dan Morgan was here tonight
01:05:53It's going to be tough conversations
01:05:54Had in the next 24 hours
01:05:57But that's what's so great about the NFL
01:05:59And we have an opportunity to come soon
01:06:00Hey, I always hate this time
01:06:03At the end
01:06:03Because you bond
01:06:04You get with these guys
01:06:05And then all of a sudden
01:06:07Now, especially
01:06:08With the long preseason they've had
01:06:10And some of these guys
01:06:12Fortunately will be on the other sideline
01:06:14And some teams
01:06:15And unfortunately
01:06:16Some of these guys
01:06:17Will not
01:06:18But this has been a great time
01:06:20Great working with you guys
01:06:22And see you
01:06:23On the radio
01:06:23I'll listen to you guys
01:06:24On the radio
01:06:25Smitty
01:06:26Jake
01:06:27Thank you
01:06:28Carla
01:06:29Down on the sideline
01:06:31For Rob Reichley
01:06:32And our entire crew
01:06:33We say
01:06:33Good night from Charlotte
01:06:35The Panthers
01:06:36And the preseason
01:06:38With a W
01:06:39Keep pounding Carolina
01:06:51All things National Football League
01:06:53Obviously
01:07:14But this has been a great time
01:07:14But this has been a great time
01:07:17But this has been a great time
01:07:17And this has been a great time
01:07:17And this has been a great time
01:07:18And this has been a great time
01:07:18And this has been a great time
01:07:19And this has been a great time
